Abstract:Flexible strain sensors play an important role in electronic skins, wearable medical devices, and advanced robots. Herein, a highly sensitive and fast response optical strain sensor with two evanescently coupled optical micro/nanofibers (MNFs) embedded in a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) film is proposed. The strain sensor exhibits a gauge factor as high as 64.5 for strain ≤ 0.5% and a strain resolution of 0.0012% which corresponds to elongation of 120 nm on a 1 cm long device. As a proof-of-concept, highly sensitive fingertip pulse measurement is realized. The properties of fast temporal frequency response up to 30 kHz and a pressure sensitivity of 102 kPa −1 enable the sensor for sound detection. Such versatile sensor could be of great use in physiological signal monitoring, voice recognition and micro-displacement detection.

Abstract:Vertical deformation can be revealed by various techniques such as precise leveling, satellite imagery, and extensometry. Despite considerable effort, recording detailed subsurface deformation using traditional extensometers remains challenging when attempting to detect localized deformation. Here we introduce distributed fiber optic sensing based on Brillouin scattering as a geophysical exploration method for imaging distributed profiles of vertical deformation. By examining fiber optic cable-soil interaction we found a threshold in confining pressure to achieve a strong cable-soil coupling, thus validating data collected from a borehole-embedded fiber optic cable deployed in Shengze, southern Yangtze Delta, China. Clear-cut strain profiles acquired from November 2014 to December 2016 allowed us to pinpoint where compaction or rebound was actively occurring and examine strain responses at various locations along the entire cable length. We suggest that distributed fiber optic sensing can complement with extensometry and remote sensing techniques for improved monitoring of vertical deformation. Plain Language Summary Recording detailed subsurface deformation using traditional methods (e.g., extensometers) is sometimes difficult due to limited measuring points. This dilemma may be overcome by using the emerging distributed fiber optic sensing technology, which transforms common telecommunication fiber optic cables into sensors capable of making distributed strain measurements. We report the use of this technology for monitoring distributions of vertical deformation resulting from groundwater abstraction in Shengze, southern Yangtze Delta, China. An evaluation of the performance of a borehole-embedded fiber optic cable helps us to validate the in situ strain data. The advantage of using this technology for vertical deformation sensing is the ability to locate any strata undergoing compaction or rebound and look at strain responses at any depth of interest. Moreover, recording subsurface changes in this fashion may also be useful in other geophysical and engineering applications that require refined monitoring of the media.
High Precision Temperature Insensitive Strain Sensor Based on Fiber-Optic Delay

Abstract:A fiber-optic delay based strain sensor with high precision and temperature insensitivity was reported, which works on detecting the delay induced by strain instead of spectrum. In order to analyze the working principle of this sensor, the elastic property of fiber-optic delay was theoretically researched and the elastic coefficient was measured as 3.78 ps/km·με. In this sensor, an extra reference path was introduced to simplify the measurement of delay and resist the cross-effect of environmental temperature. Utilizing an optical fiber stretcher driven by piezoelectric ceramics, the performance of this strain sensor was tested. The experimental results demonstrate that temperature fluctuations contribute little to the strain error and that the calculated strain sensitivity is as high as 4.75 με in the range of 350 με. As a result, this strain sensor is proved to be feasible and practical, which is appropriate for strain measurement in a simple and economical way. Furthermore, on basis of this sensor, the quasi-distributed measurement could be also easily realized by wavelength division multiplexing and wavelength addressing for long-distance structure health and security monitoring.

Abstract:The determination of subsurface deformation is critical to understanding the subsurface dynamic processes, but most of conventional monitoring methods still have challenges in remotely obtaining detailed data. Herein, a novel fiber-optic wireless sensor network using the ultra-weak fiber Bragg gratings technique was proposed. It allows real-time remote capture of subsurface deformation along the fiber-optic cables. Such a fiber-optic measurement system was employed in a borehole to a depth of 340 m in Cangzhou, China. Strain profiles were measured monthly with a spatial resolution of 5 m and strain resolution of 1 µε, and the development of all strata deformation in the aquifer systems was calculated from January 2019 to December 2019. It turns out that the subsidence rate in this area is approximate 9 mm/a, which agrees well with the result of extensometer measurements. The significant strata compaction in the second aquifer and the third aquitard rapidly increased from May 2019 to July 2019, which could be attributed to the decline in groundwater. It is concluded that the fiber-optic wireless sensor network accurately captures subsurface deformation development and helps to better elucidate the subsurface deformation mechanism and provide solutions for the prevention and mitigation.

Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrate an oscillator interrogated time-of-flight optical fiber interferometer that provides global strain information for large-scale structures. The sensing resolution of the interferometer is sufficient for many structural applications, while the system is relatively inexpensive and durable as compared to previous methods. The measurable displacement range is determined by the oscillator frequency and can therefore be designed to be significantly larger than that of current systems. An optical length change resolution of 9.5mm and range of 1.39m are demonstrated experimentally. To easily embed the interferometer in structures and effectively increase the fiber sensing length, a commercially available prefabricated fiber ribbon is used. Results from static loading tests of a FRP strengthened reinforced concrete beam with embedded fiber ribbons show the feasibility of this technique for monitoring infrastructure systems.

Abstract:To achieve a fiber strain sensor with a large detection range and high sensitivity, this paper proposes a wave structured fiber SPR strain sensor. When subjected to axial strain, the wave structured fiber is stretched axially, increasing the stretchability of the sensor and achieving a large detection range strain sensing. Meanwhile, axial strain reduces the longitudinal amplitude of the fiber wave structure, effectively changing the total reflection angle of the transmitted beam at the peak and valley (SPR incidence angle) to achieve high sensitivity SPR strain sensing. The experiment indicates that the strain detection range of the sensor can reach 0-1800µε, with a maximum strain sensitivity of 36.25pm/µε. The wave structured fiber SPR strain sensor designed in this article provides a new approach to improve the range and sensitivity of strain detection.

Abstract:A high-performance distributed optical fiber sensor based on phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR) for dynamic strain measurement has been proposed. In this newly designed system, ultraweak fiber Bragg gratings (UWFBGs) are sparsely embedded in the sensing fiber. Through an unbalanced 3 × 3 coupler structure, the reflected lights from two adjacent UWFBGs would be mixed with each other and then split into three parts for phase demodulation. Then, a novelty table-look-up scheme is introduced to precisely demodulate the frequency, amplitude, and phase of dynamic strain. Rayleigh back-scattering light is utilized to identify and locate the accurate position of vibration event between two adjacent UWFBGs. The experimental results show that the proposed system is capable of reconstructing the vibration with a linear intensity response of R2 = 0.9986 and a fiber length variation sensitivity of 117 pm/(Hz)1/2. Meanwhile, a wide frequency response band from 50 to 2075 Hz is achieved with high signal-to-noise ratio above 56 dB.

Abstract:Accurately measuring complex temperature and strain fields is crucial in engineering, but it is particularly challenging in volatile, low-temperature environments due to the significant temperature dependence of sensor parameters. This article introduces a sophisticated model using distributed fiber optic sensing (DFOS) technique for simultaneous measurement of nonuniform fields of temperature and strain in low-temperature settings, overcoming the inherent temperature sensitivity of the sensors through Rayleigh scattering and integration with an optical frequency-domain reflectometer (OFDR). Our experimental setup involves the utilization of a single optical fiber securely affixed to the specimen's surface in an arc-based geometrical configuration. We suggest a simultaneous and decoupling approach to rigorously segregate the harmonic components of temperature and strain fields, effectively addressing the temperature sensitivity. Extensive experiments cover uniform combined temperature and strain load scenarios, as well as scenarios involving gradient temperature-strain loads. Both arc-based and full circle-based configurations yielded consistent, robust results, demonstrating their efficiency in accurate decoupling. This highlights the DFOS's suitability for engineering applications needing accurate, concurrent temperature and strain measurements.

Abstract:In this paper, a temperature insensitive wide-dynamic-range distributed strain sensor with centimeter-level spatial resolution based on optical frequency domain reflection technology is proposed. It adopts a polarization-maintaining photonic crystal fiber (PMPCF) as the sensing fiber, and experimental results demonstrate that its temperature sensitivity is much smaller than that of the standard polarization-maintaining fiber(PMF). Benefited from the specially designed cross-correlation algorithm, the sensor achieves the maximum measurable strain reaches 7000 με with spatial resolution of 1.66 cm. This provides a new approach to address current issues with special fiber sensors, such as single-point sensing and low spatial resolution, which shows great significance for structural health monitoring of buildings, bridges and tunnels with urgent requirement of large dynamic range.

Abstract:Traditional silica-based optical fiber strain sensors are suffering from limited range of strain detection, mismatched mechanical performance, and complicated sensing structures for practical applications involving complex strain patterns and large strain measurement. To solve this problem, the development of novel flexible optical fiber strain sensors with distributed and multimodal strain sensing performance is critical but challenging. In this work, the flexible hydrogel optical fiber with a step-index core/cladding structure was successfully designed and fabricated using a simple thermal polymerization method, madding of calcium alginate and polyacrylamide. The resulting flexible fiber exhibits a large stretch deformation capacity and good optical transmission property, while also enabling effective and reversible strain response. Significantly, a flexible hydrogel functional fiber was further constructed by doping quantum dots with different fluorescent emission wavelengths in different positions. By exploiting a combination of emission wavelength encoding and transmission loss, flexible hydrogel functional optical fibers can distinguish and recognize the locations, magnitudes, and modes (stretch or bend) of mechanical deformation through a single wavelength of visible light (365 nm) excitation. The ultra-large dynamic range (0~120%) of axial strain and bending deformation (10~80 degree) can be effectively detected. This work offers a versatile solution to develop promising stretchable and distributed fiber strain sensors.

Abstract:We have proposed a high sensitive photonic crystal fiber (PCF) strain sensor based on the Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI). The sensing head is formed by all-fiber in-line single mode-multimode-photonic-crystal-single mode fiber (SMPS) structure, using only the splicing method. Such a strain sensor exhibited a high sensitivity of -2.21 pm/με within a large measurement range of up to 5000 με and a large fringe visibility of up to 24 dB. Moreover, it was found that the strain sensitivity was weekly dependent of the length of PCF or MMF. In addition, the sensor exhibited the advantages of simplicity of fabrication, high sensitivity and larger fringe visibility.

Abstract:Abstract Vertical deformation profiles of subterranean geological formations are conventionally measured by borehole extensometry. Distributed strain sensing (DSS) paired with fiber-optic cables installed in the ground opens up possibilities for acquiring high-resolution static and quasistatic strain profiles of deforming strata, but it is currently limited by reduced data quality due to complicated patterns of interaction between the buried cables and their surroundings, especially in upper soil layers under low confining pressures. Extending recent DSS studies, we present an improved approach using microanchored fiber-optic cables—designed to optimize ground-to-cable coupling at the near surface—for strain determination along entire lengths of vertical boreholes. We proposed a novel criterion for soil–cable coupling evaluation based on the geotechnical bearing capacity theory. We applied this enhanced methodology to monitor groundwater-related vertical motions in both laboratory and field experiments. Corroborating extensometer recordings, acquired simultaneously, validated fiber optically determined displacements, suggesting microanchored DSS as an improved means for detecting and monitoring shallow subsurface strain profiles.

Abstract:Understanding the mechanical characteristics of clayey soil is critical to estimate the stability of clay-related geotechnical engineering works. However, the distributed information of the internal deformation of clay is hard to capture through traditional methods. In this paper, a set of four-point bending tests were performed on a compacted clay beam instrumented with fiber optic strain sensors to investigate the flexure and cracking behaviors. The optical frequency domain reflectometry technique with high spatial resolution and precision was employed to establish a distributed strain sensing (DSS) system in this study. The results show that the DSS system exhibits a high accuracy in the collection of the clay deformation in terms of compression, tension, and cracking. The comparison of the internal strain profiles with the observation of particle image velocimetry analysis system verifies the feasibility of fiber optic sensing technology in the quantitative assessment of clay deformation. The performance of fiber optic sensors in the rebound deformation and creep deformation monitoring was preliminarily issued in the study. In addition, the progressive failure on the fiber-soil interface was analytically studied to evaluate the deformation compatibility between the fiber and surrounding clayed soil. The conclusions drawn in this paper can help to guide the state interpretation of clayey soil instrumented with fiber optic sensors.

Abstract:A fiber-optic extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometer strain sensor (EFPI-S) of ls = 2.5 cm sensor length using three-wavelength digital phase demodulation is demonstrated to exhibit <50 pm displacement resolution (<2nm/m strain resolution) when measuring the cross expansion of a PZT-ceramic plate. The sensing (single-mode downlead-) and reflecting fibers are fused into a 150/360 microm capillary fiber where the fusion points define the sensor length. Readout is performed using an improved version of the previously described three-wavelength digital phase demodulation method employing an arctan-phase stepping algorithm. In the resent experiments the strain sensitivity was varied via the mapping of the arctan - lookup table to the 16-Bit DA-converter range from 188.25 k /V (6 Volt range 1130 k ) to 11.7 k /Volt (range 70 k ).

Abstract:Abstract We demonstrate the feasibility of detecting very weak deformation in the shallow crust with high temporal resolution by monitoring the relative changes in seismic wave velocity (dv/v) using dense arrays of seismometers. We show that the dv/v variations are consistent between independent measurements from two seismic arrays. Dominant peaks in the observed dv/v spectrum suggest that tides and temperature changes are the major causes of daily and sub‐daily velocity changes, in accordance with theoretical strain modeling. Our analysis illustrates that dv/v perturbations of the order of 10 ‐4 , corresponding to crustal strain changes of the order of 10 ‐8 , can be measured from ambient seismic noise with a temporal resolution of one hour. This represents a low‐cost technique for high precision and high time‐resolution monitoring of crustal deformation that is complementary to existing geodetic measurements and is instrumental in both the detection and understanding of low‐amplitude precursory processes of natural catastrophic events.

Abstract:Ultrahigh-resolution optical strain sensors provide powerful tools in various scientific and engineering fields, ranging from long-baseline interferometers to civil and aerospace industries. Here we demonstrate an ultrahigh-resolution fibre strain sensing method by directly detecting the time-of-flight (TOF) change of the optical pulse train generated from a free-running passively mode-locked laser (MLL) frequency comb. We achieved a local strain resolution of 18 p{\epsilon}/Hz1/2 and 1.9 p{\epsilon}/Hz1/2 at 1 Hz and 3 kHz, respectively, with largedynamic range of >154 dB at 3 kHz. For remote-point sensing at 1-km distance, 80 p{\epsilon}/Hz1/2 (at 1 Hz) and 2.2 p{\epsilon}/Hz1/2 (at 3 kHz) resolution is demonstrated. While attaining both ultrahigh resolution and large dynamic range, the demonstrated method can be readily extended for multiple-point sensing as well by taking advantage of the broad optical comb spectra. These advantages may allow various applications of this sensor in geophysical science, structural health monitoring, and underwater science.

Abstract:Journal of Circuits, Systems and Computers, Ahead of Print. In the fields of structural health monitoring, civil engineering safety monitoring, aerospace and other fields, the key challenge is to increase the range of strain measurements to solve with the information monitoring of large strains. Reducing the strain sensitivity of the sensor is an important way to solve the problem of small sensor ranges. In this paper, the inclined transfer structure is proposed to achieve large strain distributed optical fiber sensing. When the fiber is axially stretched directly to fracture, the inclined transfer structure is used to increase the strain measurement range of the system. The theoretical relationship between the strain monitored by single mode fiber sensors and the matrix strain is established. It is experimentally verified that the inclined transfer structure using polypropylene material as the matrix achieves the strain measurement from 36667[math][math] at sensing spatial resolution of 8[math]mm, 10[math]nm wavelength tuning range of the laser source and [math] inclined angle, obtaining a good linear fit of more than 0.99. One hour stability of less than 11[math]pm is obtained, corresponding to the strain of 9[math][math].

Abstract:A fiber optic sensor for simultaneous measurement of temperature and strain is demonstrated, based on a few-mode solid-core photonic crystal fiber. In the core of the few-mode fiber, the fundamental mode and the first higher order mode are co-excited, when coupling light from a collapsed end, through a single-mode fiber. Mach-Zehnder interferences between the two core modes and one possible cladding mode are observed. The interference characteristics vary accordingly, with the change of temperature and applied strain. This system gives a sensitivity of 9.85 pm/°C and 3.24 pm/με, respectively.

Abstract:Optical fiber sensors for strain measurement have been playing important roles in structural health monitoring for buildings, tunnels, pipelines, aircrafts, and so on. A highly sensitive strain sensor based on helical structures (HSs) assisted Mach-Zehnder interference in an all-solid heterogeneous multicore fiber (MCF) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Due to the HSs, a maximum strain sensitivity as high as −61.8 pm/με was experimentally achieved. This is the highest sensitivity among interferometer-based strain sensors reported so far, to the best of our knowledge. Moreover, the proposed sensor has the ability to discriminate axial strain and temperature, and offers several advantages such as repeatability of fabrication, robust structure and compact size, which further benefits its practical sensing applications.

Abstract:<p>The distributed fiber optic sensing technology has emerged as a promising tool for monitoring soil shear deformation. However, the question remains whether the strain measurements obtained by the soil-embedded optical fiber cables are reliable due to cable-soil slippage. In this paper, a direct shear model test was conducted in laboratory to characterize the cable-soil deformation compatibility considering different anchorage conditions. The optical frequency domain reflectometer was employed to measure cable strains. The measurements were compared with those from the particle image velocity technique. When the strain sensing cable couples well with soil, the cable elongation exhibits a linear relationship with the soil shear displacement. A strain integration method is then proposed to convert strain measurements into shear displacements. Furthermore, the effect of block and tube anchors on the cable-soil coupling behavior is investigated. The conclusions drawn in this study provide a reference for establishing new geotechnical deformation monitoring systems.</p>
