Abstract:We present a compact highly sensitive microfiber coupler-based twist sensor formed by fusing and tapering two optical fibers and then connecting two of the pigtails to form a Sagnac loop. The device is miniature, low cost, and easily fabricated. The sensor has high twist sensitivities of similar to 0.9 nm/degrees when measuring wavelength shift and similar to 0.16 dB/degrees when measuring transmission power, both of which confirm that the sensor has good potential for application in the structural health monitoring and other areas.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a full description of the design and fabrication of a compact spot-size converter (SSC) applied to interferometric fiber optic gyroscopes (IFOGs). The obtained SSC has a length of 500 um and a coupling efficiency of 52%. The polarization dependency of the SSC is less than 0.1 dB, and the variation tendencies of our experimental results agree well with a simulation. The SSC possesses many properties suitable for various optical communication and sensing systems, including small size, high coupling efficiency, integration, and high stability.

Abstract:With diameter close to or below the wavelength of guided light and high index contrast between the fiber core and the surrounding, an optical microfiber shows a variety of interesting waveguiding properties, including widely tailorable optical confinement, evanescent fields and waveguide dispersion. Among various microfiber applications, optical sensing has been attracting increasing research interest due to its possibilities of realizing miniaturized fiber optic sensors with small footprint, high sensitivity, fast response, high flexibility and low optical power consumption. Here we review recent progress in microfiber optical sensors regarding their fabrication, waveguide properties and sensing applications. Typical microfiber-based sensing structures, including biconical tapers, optical gratings, circular cavities, Mach-Zehnder interferometers and functionally coated/doped microfibers, are summarized. Categorized by sensing structures, microfiber optical sensors for refractive index, concentration, temperature, humidity, strain and current measurement in gas or liquid environments are reviewed. Finally, we conclude with an outlook for challenges and opportunities of microfiber optical sensors.

Abstract:We fabricate a microfiber knot-type ring resonator with a Sagnac loop reflector, and control the light velocity using the device. In this structure, light is reflected by the Sagnac loop and passes through the ring resonator twice. Thus, it possesses doubled transmission and group delay comparing with the microfiber ring resonator without the Sagnac loop. We experimentally demonstrate pulse advancement in an under-coupled microfiber knot-type ring resonator with a Sagnac loop reflector. In the experiment, a maximum of similar to 25 ps pulse advancement was achieved for a 5-Gb/s RZ signal. (C) 2010 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Phase shifts within microfiber resonators can be exploited to demonstrate compact and fast-responding devices. Two examples, a sensor and a bistable device, where the origins of the phase shift are fundamentally different, are investigated. In the sensor the phase change originates from the change of refractive index of the medium surrounding the microfiber ring. This is a linear mechanism which translates into a change of resonance wavelength. Calculations of a silica microfiber ring immersed in an aqueous solution and operating at a wavelength of 1550 nm show that with a fiber 550 nm in diameter the sensitivity approaches a maximal value of about 1137 nm/RIU. In contrast to the sensitivity, the detection limit is critically dependent on the Q factor of the microfiber resonator, and with state of the art microfiber resonators we predict a detection limit of the order of 10(-7) RIU. In the bistable device the phase shift is assumed to originate from the nonlinear optical Kerr effect. In contrast to the sensor, the nonlinearity affects the shapes of the resonances, a phenomenon responsible for bistability. Analytical formulae are derived to evaluate the main parameters at play. We investigate the suitability of several glass materials to realize a microfiber bistable device in air operating at a wavelength of 1550 nm. While the threshold for bistability is predicted to be of the order of tens of watts for silica, it drops to less than 30 mW for G2S2, an easily processed chalcogenide glass.

Abstract:We demonstrate all fiber Fabry-Perot resonators (F-P resonators) based on Sagnac loop mirrors assembled with tellurite microfibers. As-assembled F-P resonators, with dimensions of hundreds of micrometers, show clear resonant responses with typical quality factor of about 5700, free spectral range of about 1 nm, and a maximum extinction ratio of 18 dB. The reflectivity of the loop mirror and the effective cavity length of the F-P resonator can be tuned by micromanipulation under an optical microscope. F-P resonators demonstrated here show advantages of small size, good resonance, easy fabrication, tunability, and easy integration with fiber systems. (C) 2009 Optical Society of America

Abstract:A type of compact temperature sensor based on microfiber knot resonator is proposed and demonstrated experimentally. The microfiber knot, which is assembled by two fiber probes, is placed on a plate glass substrate and coated with low-index polymer to keep the system robust. Sensitivities of this kind of temperature sensor as 0.27nm/°C in heating process (when temperature ranges from 28 to 140°C) and −0.28nm/°C in cooling process (when temperature ranges from 135 to 25°C) are obtained. Temperature resolution of 0.5°C is demonstrated and higher resolution is predicted with a high-resolution spectrometer.

Abstract:High-performance superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors (SNSPDs) have facilitated numerous experiments and applications, particularly in the fields of modern quantum optics and quantum communication. Two kinds of optical coupling methods have thus far been developed for SNSPDs: one produces standard fiber-coupled SNSPDs in which the fibers vertically illuminate the meandered nanowires; the other produces waveguide-coupled SNSPDs in which nanowires are fabricated on the surface of a waveguide that guides photons, and the fibers are coupled to the waveguide. In this paper, we report on first experimental demonstration of a new type of SNSPD that is coupled with a microfiber (MF). Photons are guided by the MF and are evanescently absorbed by the nanowires of the SNSPD when the MF is placed on top of superconducting NbN nanowires. Room-temperature optical experiments indicated that this device has a coupling efficiency of up to 90% when a 1.3 mu m-diameter MF is used for light with wavelength of 1550 nm. We were also able to demonstrate that our MF-coupled detector achieved system detection efficiencies of 50% and 20% at incident wavelengths of 1064 and 1550 nm, respectively, for a 2 mu m-diameter MF at 2.2K. We expect that MF-coupled SNSPDs may show both high efficiency and broadband characteristics upon optimization and will be used for various novel applications, such as micro/nano-fiber optics. Abstract:A compact highly sensitive microfiber coupler based reflective micro-force sensor is presented. The device is fabricated by fusing two twisted optical fibers and then connecting two of the pigtails to form a Sagnac loop. The sensor has a high force sensitivity of ~3754 nm/N which is three orders of magnitude larger than traditional optical fiber force sensors, and a low detection limit of ~1.6 µN. The good repeatability is also shown in this paper.

Abstract:We demonstrate refractive-index sensors based on copper-rod- supported microfiber loops. Due to the robustness of the supported loop structure and the flexibility of obtaining critical coupling within a broad spectral range, these microfiber loops show high sensitivity and high stability for sensing in both low- and high-concentration solutions with estimated sensitivity of refractive-index measurement up to 1.8 x 10(-5).

Abstract:An optical fiber coupler is a simple and fundamental component for fiber optic technologies that works by reducing the fiber diameter to hundred nanometers or several micrometers. The microfiber coupler (MFC) has regained interest in optical fiber sensing in recent years. The subwavelength diameter rationales vast refractive index (RI) contrast between microfiber “core” and surrounding “cladding”, a large portion of energy transmits in the form of an evanescent wave over the fiber surface that determines the MFC ultrasensitive to local environmental changes. Consequently, MFC has the potential to develop as a sensor. With the merits of easy fabrication, low cost and compact size, numerous researches have been carried out on different microfiber coupler configurations for various sensing applications, such as refractive index (RI), temperature, humidity, magnetic field, gas, biomolecule, and so on. In this manuscript, the fabrication and operation principle of an MFC are elaborated and recent advances of MFC-based sensors for scientific and technological applications are comprehensively reviewed.

Abstract:A method for the construction of a tiny in-line coupler tip is presented. An in-line coupler tip was manufactured by tapering a dual-core PCF and cleaving half of the waist region. Even and odd supermodes with different propagation constants are produced in the tapered region, which results in the inter-mode interference. The interferometric spectrum depends on both the length of the tapered region and the refractive index. Due to the thermo-optics coefficient and thermal expansion coefficient of the pure silica, the temperature of the external environment can be measured by interrogating the optical reflection spectrum. Therefore, the in-line coupler can be constructed for the measurement of temperature. The experimental results show that the temperature sensitivity of 0.024nm/°C and operation range of 1425°C are achieved. Compared with other expensive methods, the proposed method possesses wide operation range and tiny size. Thus the microstructured fibre sensor technique appears to have potential applications in industry, medicine, biology, and chemistry.

Abstract:Based on the basic theory of the microfiber loop resonator, we exploit the application of microfiber loop resonators in biochemical sensing. We set up a reliable theoretical model and optimize the structural parameters of microfiber loop resonators including the radius of the microrfiber, the radius of the loop and the length of the coupling region for higher sensitivity, wider dynamic measurement range, and lower detection limit. To show the convincible and realizable sensing ability we perform the simulation of sensing an extreme small variation of ambient refractive index by employing a set of experimental datas as the parameters in the expression of intensity transmission coefficient, and the detection limit reaches to a varation of ambient refractive index of 10-5 refractive index unit(RIU). This has superiority over the exsiting evanescent field-based subwavelength-diameter optical fiber refractive index sensor.

Abstract:The authors demonstrate critical coupling condition in microfiber loops wrapped around a copper rod. The critical coupling condition is achieved by tuning the coupling coefficient to balance the circulation loss. A maximum extinction of 30 dB has been obtained around the critical coupling point with a quality factor of about 4000. The resonance wavelength can be tuned by applying an electric current through the copper rod. The copper rod, usually deemed as a high-loss medium for handling light at optical frequency, serves as a low-index robust support for achieving critical coupling in the microfiber loops with acceptable loss. Abstract:The manipulation of light propagation is a basic subject in optics and has many important applications. With the development of nano-optics, this area has been downscaled to wavelength or even subwavelength scales. One of the most efficient ways to control light propagation is to exploit interference effects. Here, by manipulating the interference between two nanogrooves on a metal surface, we realize a submicron broadband surface-plasmon-polariton (SPP) unidirectional coupler. More importantly, we find an anomalous bandwidth shrinking behavior in the proposed SPP unidirectional coupler as the groove separation is down to a subwavelength scale of one-quarter of the SPP wavelength. This abnormal behavior is well explained by considering the contribution of the near-field quasi-cylindrical waves in addition to the interference of propagating SPPs and the dispersion effects of individual grooves. Such near-field effects provide new opportunities for the design of ultracompact optical devices.

Abstract:A simple and compact Erbium-doped fiber laser is demonstrated with two Sagnac loops formed by a 3×3 microfiber coupler. By fusing two ports on each side of the 3 ×3 microfiber coupler and embedding a 90 cm Erbium-doped fiber in one loop, a stable laser output is achieved at 1530 nm region with an optical signal to noise ratio of ~40 dB using a 980-nm pump. Taking advantage of the large evanescent field and excellent temperature and mechanical properties of the micro-sized coupled area, the device has great potentials in tunable laser and active sensing for refractive index, temperature, strain and pressure.

Abstract:On the basis of transverse second harmonic generation (TSHG) in a CdS nanowire-assembled Sagnac loop, we demonstrate an optical correlator for ultrashort pulse characterization with an overall footprint as small as ∼46 × 120 μm2. Pulses to be measured are coupled into the input port of a Sagnac-loop-based correlator and subsequently split into two counterpropagating pulses by the built-in optical coupler. They overlap automatically around the midpoint of the loop (making the correlator free of external bulky delay lines, insensitive to input coupling, and thus easy to operate with miniature size) and generate a spatially distributed TSHG signal perpendicular to the nanowire, which can be readily imaged and transferred into a time-domain temporal profile of the input pulses. The Sagnac-loop-based correlator shows an excellent accuracy in the measurement of 1040 nm femtosecond laser (5.6 pJ/pulse) with different pulse widths (from 554 to 1146 fs). The operation wavelength can cover a wide range providing a suitable nanowire diameter is selected. The ultracompact correlator with a simple operation and low cost may find applications ranging from on-chip optical communication and biophotonics to laser spectroscopy.

A novel compensation fiber coil for eliminating Sagnac Effect in fiber optic current sensor

Abstract:In Sagnac interferometer fiber optics current sensor, errors from the residual linear birefringence and environmental temperature and vibration sensitity has severely influenced on accuracy of this sensor. Spun highly linearly birefringent fiber has intrinsic sensitivity to magnetic fields through the Faraday Effect which result in simplification of optical element. The absence of the quarter wave plate result in good temperature performance and reducing light loss for less splice points. In this manuscript, the spun highly linearly birefringent fiber was designed and the vibration insensitive Sagnac interferometer fiber optics current sensor (S-FOCS) scheme was set up. In this scheme, the compensation fiber coil was designed to compensate the error caused by Sagnac effect in sensing fiber coil. Therefore, it is vibration immunity Sagnac interferometer fiber optics current sensor. The theoretical modeling of the state of light polarization was built by Jones Matrix. The results demonstrated that this novel sensor have good performance of conductor position insensitivity, temperature stability and vibration immunity. © 2013 TCCT, CAA.

Abstract:A low-cost and highly compact fiber-optic component is proposed and experimentally demonstrated for vector bending sensing. A segment of microfiber tapered from standard single-mode fibers (SMFs) is spliced between two SMFs with pre-designed lateral offset to construct a sandwich type Mach–Zehnder interferometer of $243.32~\mu \text{m}$ in length. Sensing performances of the proposed vector bending sensor are theoretically analyzed in detail. As the applied curvature increases from 0.3873 to 3.0 m−1, the transmission spectra of the proposed sensor show distinct linear wavelength shift sensitivities for different directions, the maximum of which is up to 3.419 nm/m−1. Besides, temperature test indicates that the proposed sensor possesses a low-temperature cross sensitivity of 33.71 pm/°C, which ensures its applicability for practical uses in temperature-fluctuated environment. Hence, our proposed vector bending sensor possesses such desirable merits as high sensitivity, compact size, low thermal crosstalk, low cost, and orientation-dependent spectral response.
