Abstract:Enhancing nonreciprocal light-matter interaction at sub-wavelength scales has attracted enormous attention due to high demand for compact optical isolators. Here, we propose a significant enhancement of the magneto-optical effect in low-biased gyromagnetic media via photonic doping. Magnetic particles immersed in a gyrotropy-near-zero medium act as dopants that largely modify the macroscopic gyromagnetic effects as well as the gyroelectric ones. Around the resonance frequency, the gyromagnetic activity is largely increased and even exceeds unity, thus providing a photonic band in which the wavenumber of one circularly polarized wave becomes purely imaginary. The sign of gyromagnetic activity flips at two chiral modes, and an equivalent switching of the external bias is revealed. A proof-ofconcept low-biased planar isolator is designed with a thickness of only 1/28 wavelength and a degree of isolation achieving as high as 0.94. This methodology is robust against disturbance of the biased magnetic field and can be flexibly extended to other frequencies, thus offering a promising platform to achieve giant optical isolation with infinitesimally intrinsic magneto-optical effects and reduced sizes. Abstract:We analytically investigate the Fano-type optical response and four-wave mixing (FWM) process by exploiting the magnetoelasticity of a ferromagnetic material. The deformation of the ferromagnetic material plays the role of mechanical displacement, which is simultaneously coupled to both optical and magnon modes. We report that the magnetostrictively induced displacement demonstrates Fano profiles, in the output field, which is well-tuned by adjusting the system parameters, like effective magnomechanical coupling, magnon detuning, and cavity detuning. It is found that the magnetoelastic interaction also gives rise to the FWM phenomenon. The number of the FWM signals mainly depends upon the effective magnomechanical coupling and the magnon detuning. Moreover, the FWM spectrum exhibits suppressive behavior upon increasing (decreasing) the magnon (cavity) decay rate. The present scheme will open new perspectives in highly sensitive detection and quantum information processing.

Abstract:We report on the conception, fabrication and characterization of a new concept of optical fiber enabling a precise control of the ratio between the 2nd and 4th-order of chromatic dispersion (respectively \b{eta}2 and \b{eta}4) at 1.55 micro-meter which is at the heart of the Four-Wave-Mixing (FWM) generation. For conventional highly nonlinear fiber the sensitivity of this ratio to fiber geometry fluctuations is very critical, making the fabrication process challenging. The new design fiber reconciles the accurate control of chromatic dispersion properties and fabrication by standard stack and draw method, allowing a robust and reliable method against detrimental fluctuations parameters during the fabrication process. Experimental frequency conversion with FWM in the new design fiber is demonstrated.

Abstract:Four-wave mixing in a monolayer graphene-covered tapered fiber is theoretically analyzed by taking into account the influence of the graphene layer on the light-field distribution. A figure-of-merit (FOM) coefficient, considering both the high nonlinearity and the heavy absorption, is redefined to evaluate nonlinear performance. The fiber diameter and length are optimized to acquire a higher FOM. Using such a graphene-covered tapered fiber with an optimal diameter of 0.736 μm, a maximum conversion efficiency of −38.07 dB is numerically obtained for the 1.55 μm pump when the graphene length is 34.4 μm and the peak pump power is 10 W. Moreover, a 3 dB bandwidth as broad as 430 nm can be realized in the 1.55 μm telecommunication band.

Abstract:Multicasting is an important function of wavelength-routing optical communication networks. An all-optical multicasting is presented and experimentally demonstrated based on four-wave mixing (FWM) in highly nonlinear fibers. An input signal with data information together with a pump are injected into a highly nonlinear fiber and two idlers with new frequencies can be generated through two degenerate FWM processes, which carry the same data information as the input signal. The single input signal is copied to two channels and the pump can also be modulated by this data. The advantage of this scheme consists in the simple configuration, where only a single pump is needed and no other injected lights are required, the uniform powers and tunable wavelengths of the multicasting signals, and the capacity to further increase multicasting channel number.

Abstract:Observing nonlinear optical quantum effects or implementing quantum information protocols using nonlinear optics requires moving to ever-smaller input light intensities. However, low light intensities generally mean weak optical nonlinearities, inadequate for many applications. Here we calculate the performance of four-wave mixing in various optical fibers for the case where one of the input beams is a single photon. We show that in tapered chalcogenide glass fibers (microwires) a single photon plus strong pump beam can produce a pair of photons with probability 0.1%, much higher than in previous work on bulk and waveguided crystal sources. Such a photon converter could be useful for creating large entangled photon states, for performing a loophole-free test of Bell's inequalities, and for quantum communication.

Abstract:A fiber loop mirror constructed from two polarization-maintaining dispersion-shifted fibers is proposed and four-wave mixing (FWM) in this loop is theoretically investigated. Our results show that this fiber loop can inherently suppress the pump and signal waves even without optical filtering in continuous-wave or long-pulse cases. The difference between one-pump (nearly degenerate) and two-pump (nondegenerate) FWMs is also presented.

Abstract:A novel method of wavelength conversion based on four-wave mixing in a dispersion-shifted fiber by using a spectrum-sliced fiber amplifier light source is demonstrated. By utilizing the wavelength region around the zero-dispersion wavelength of a fiber, a coherent light modulated by 5 Gbit/s RZ signal is converted with a conversion efficiency of -24 dB, the maximum wavelength conversion range of four wave mixing is about 3.4 nm.

Abstract:Controlling quantum materials with light is of fundamental and technological importance. By utilizing the strong coupling of light and matter in optical cavities (1-3), recent studies were able to modify some of their most defining features (4-6). In this work, we study the magneto-optical properties of a van der Waals magnet that supports strong coupling of photons and excitons even in the absence of external cavity mirrors. In this material - the layered magnetic semiconductor CrSBr - emergent light-matter hybrids called polaritons are shown to significantly increase the spectral bandwidth of correlations between the magnetic, electronic, and optical properties, enabling largely tunable optical responses to applied magnetic fields and magnons. Our results highlight the importance of exciton-photon self-hybridization in van der Waals magnets and motivate novel directions for the manipulation of quantum material properties by strong light-matter coupling.

Abstract:Cascaded fiber geometry with the dispersion of each fiber decreasing is proposed to enhance the multiple four-wave mixing（FWM） generation. The first fiber with relatively large dispersion initiates and accelerates the expansion of multiple FWM, and the second fiber with small dispersion would allow the phase-matching process（thus the spectrum broadening）to keep going. Numerical and experimental results show that with this geometry not only multiple FWM expansion can be accelerated, but also the efficiency of multiple FWM products can be effectively improved with shorter fibers.
Nonlinear Faraday magneto-optic effects in a helically wound optical fiber

Abstract:We thoroughly investigate the Faraday magneto-optical effects in a helically wound nonlinear optical fiber. We find the emergence of an additional rotation angle proportional to the optical intensity, arised from the nonlinear corrections to both the Verdet constant and the fiber torsion. By analyzing an oscillator model describing the electron motions in the fiber medium, we can obtain the third-order susceptibility in the presence of the magnetic field. According to the Maxwell's equations and the minimal coupling principle in the metric expression of the curved space, we derive the propagation equations of light in a helically wound optical fiber. Finally, we have obtained the analytic expressions of Faraday rotation angle for both linearly and elliptically polarized lights, which explicitly indicates an important nonlinear correction on the Faraday rotation angles. Possible experimental observations and some implications of our theoretical findings are discussed.

Abstract:The optical magnetoelectric effect, which is an inherent attribute of the spin excitations in multiferroics, drastically changes their optical properties compared to conventional materials where light-matter interaction is expressed only by the dielectric permittivity and magnetic permeability. Our polarized absorption experiments performed on multiferroic Ca2CoSi2O7 and Ba2CoGe2O7 in the THz spectral range demonstrate that such magnetoeletric spin excitations show quadrochroism, i.e. they have different colours for all the four combinations of the two propagation directions (forward or backward) and the two orthogonal polarizations of a light beam. We found that quadrochroism can give rise to peculiar optical properties, such as one-way transparency and zero-reflection of these excitations, which can open a new horizon in photonics. One-way transparency is also related to the static magnetoelectric phenomena, hence, these optical studies can provide guidelines for the systematic synthesis of new materials with large dc magnetoelectric effect.

Abstract:We demonstrate almost octave-spanning cascaded four-wave mixing (CFWM) in optical microfibers. Pumped by two synchronized picosecond lasers at about 850 nm, microfibers with a length of 10-20 cm can generate CFWM spanning from a few hundred nanometers to almost one octave, depending on the diameter of the microfibers and the detuning between the two pumps. CFWM in microfibers, which has the advantages of easy fabrication, highly efficient coupling, relatively short length, and easy integration with fiber systems, can be used for applications in widely tunable multiline phase-sensitive amplification, multiwavelength coherent sources, and ultrashort pulse synthesis.
Exploring the role of polarization in fiber-based quantum sources

Abstract:Optical fibers constitute an attractive platform for the realization of nonlinear and quantum optics processes. Here we show, through theoretical considerations, how polarization effects of both third-order parametric down-conversion and four-wave-mixing in optical fibers may be exploited to enhance detection schemes. We apply our general framework specifically to the case of tapered fibers for photon triplet generation, a long-standing goal within quantum optics, and obtain explicit expectation values for its efficiency. A quantitative investigation of four-wave-mixing in a microstructured solid-core fiber provides significant consequences for the role of polarization in experimental design.
