Abstract:Cascaded fiber geometry with the dispersion of each fiber decreasing is proposed to enhance the multiple four-wave mixing（FWM） generation. The first fiber with relatively large dispersion initiates and accelerates the expansion of multiple FWM, and the second fiber with small dispersion would allow the phase-matching process（thus the spectrum broadening）to keep going. Numerical and experimental results show that with this geometry not only multiple FWM expansion can be accelerated, but also the efficiency of multiple FWM products can be effectively improved with shorter fibers.

Abstract:We theoretically present and experimentally demonstrate all-optical wavelength multicasting based on cascaded four-wave mixing (FWM) in highly nonlinear fibers only using a single pump. The cascaded FWM effect is analyzed based on the sum amplitude method, which overcomes the limitation of the number of analyzed idlers, and the performance of the wavelength multicasting is evaluated. By using a continuous wave pump and a pulse train as the signal, multiple-order idlers are experimentally generated and the patterns of 6 multicasting channels are measured. Regardless of the dynamic region of the tunable filter, this method has the potential to realize more multicasting channels, especially when higher pump and signal powers are used.

Abstract:Multicasting is an important function of wavelength-routing optical communication networks. An all-optical multicasting is presented and experimentally demonstrated based on four-wave mixing (FWM) in highly nonlinear fibers. An input signal with data information together with a pump are injected into a highly nonlinear fiber and two idlers with new frequencies can be generated through two degenerate FWM processes, which carry the same data information as the input signal. The single input signal is copied to two channels and the pump can also be modulated by this data. The advantage of this scheme consists in the simple configuration, where only a single pump is needed and no other injected lights are required, the uniform powers and tunable wavelengths of the multicasting signals, and the capacity to further increase multicasting channel number.

Abstract:We demonstrate almost octave-spanning cascaded four-wave mixing (CFWM) in optical microfibers. Pumped by two synchronized picosecond lasers at about 850 nm, microfibers with a length of 10-20 cm can generate CFWM spanning from a few hundred nanometers to almost one octave, depending on the diameter of the microfibers and the detuning between the two pumps. CFWM in microfibers, which has the advantages of easy fabrication, highly efficient coupling, relatively short length, and easy integration with fiber systems, can be used for applications in widely tunable multiline phase-sensitive amplification, multiwavelength coherent sources, and ultrashort pulse synthesis.

Abstract:We propose a novel photonic harmonic mixer operating at frequencies up to the millimeter-wave (MMW) band. By combining a broadband fiber-wireless signal with high-order harmonics of a fundamental local oscillator in an optical frequency comb generator, frequency down-conversion can be implemented without using a costly ultra-broadband photodiode. It is theoretically shown that the down-conversion efficiency and the bandwidth of the mixer is highly dependent on the optical modulation indices and the fundamental frequency of comb lines. Down-conversion of a W-band (75-110 GHz) fiber-wireless signal is experimentally demonstrated. Moreover, the error vector magnitude (EVM) performance of a multigigabit quadrature phase-shift-keying (QPSK) signal at 62.5-, 82.5-, and 102.5-GHz carrier frequencies is studied to evaluate the down-conversion efficiency. The proposed photonic harmonic mixer can be a candidate for applications in high capacity fiber-wireless communication systems.

Abstract:Four-wave mixing (FWM) is an important technique for supercontinuum and frequency comb generation in the mid-infrared band. Here, we report simultaneous synthetic FWM in both the visible and mid-infrared bands by cascading quadratic nonlinear processes in a periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) crystal, which has a conversion efficiency that is 110 dB (at 3000 nm) higher than the FWM generated directly using third-order susceptibilities in bulk PPLN crystals. A general model of the proposed process is developed that shows full agreement with the experimental verification results. The frequency difference between the emerging frequency components can be tuned freely by varying the frequency difference between the dual pump lasers. Furthermore, by increasing the conversion bandwidth and the efficiency of the cascaded processes, it becomes feasible to generate frequency combs simultaneously in three bands, comprising the visible, near-infrared, and mid-infrared bands, via high-order cascaded processes. This work represents a route toward free-tuning multiband frequency comb generation with multi-octave frequency spanning that will have significant applications in fields, including mid-infrared gas sensing, lidar, and high-precision spectroscopy.

Abstract:We integrate a spatial light modulator-based dispersion controller into a cascaded four-wave mixing (CFWM) system. By tuning the group delay dispersion (GDD) and fourth-order dispersion (FOD) terms, we control the CFWM phase matching and demonstrate an output bandwidth tuning of over 3.3×. At the maximum bandwidth, our system covers the telecommunications S-, C-, and L-bands (1466-1641 nm) with an average output power of 300 mW, which is contained in 52 individual lines spaced 374 GHz apart. This method represents a reconfigurable alternative to photonic crystal fibers for dispersion engineering and allows for the use of step-index fiber and customizable power spectral density (PSD) profiles.

Abstract:We investigate power-dependent phase-matched four-wave mixing (FWM) in wavelength division multiplexing transmission lines, in which positive and negative dispersion fibers are alternately arranged to manage the dispersion and the dispersion slope. The FWM effect shows power-independent phase matching when the channel power is low. However, it is power dependent at high power. The maximum FWM conversion efficiency is shifted away from the zero channel space in the case of power-dependent phase matching. Optimization of the dispersion system for suppression of the FWM effect is determined.

Abstract:Ultrafast nonlinear interactions in optical fibers are commonly employed for generating light with tailored properties, with four-wave mixing (FWM) being a widely used mechanism. Existing systems mainly rely on fibers with solid glass cores, facing limitations due to a lack of tunability and susceptibility to noise. Here, fibers with fluidic cores emerge as a promising alternative for efficient FWM, offering novel functionalities and expanded parameter ranges. In this study, we investigate single and cascaded FWM in liquid-core fibers regarding spectral tunability and interplay with the Raman effect. The study relies on binary liquids used as core materials in combination with ultrashort ps-pulses and seeding. Strong side bands were observed whose spectral position could be adjusted by the liquid composition and the seed wavelength. Seeding additionally leads to higher-order side bands, which we assign to cascaded FWM. Furthermore, we explore the interaction between FWM and stimulated Raman scattering by adjusting the FWM peaks to overlap or deviate from the Raman bands through variations of the core liquid and the seed wavelength. The presented results shed light on the unique characteristics of the liquid-core fiber platform in the context of parametric nonlinear interactions, particularly regarding tunability and interaction with Raman scattering. These findings offer new possibilities for the development of light sources capable of Raman-free photon pair generation for quantum technology or for creating tunable narrowband spectra for imaging applications in life sciences.

Abstract:A fiber loop mirror constructed from two polarization-maintaining dispersion-shifted fibers is proposed and four-wave mixing (FWM) in this loop is theoretically investigated. Our results show that this fiber loop can inherently suppress the pump and signal waves even without optical filtering in continuous-wave or long-pulse cases. The difference between one-pump (nearly degenerate) and two-pump (nondegenerate) FWMs is also presented.

Abstract:We investigate the four-wave mixing (F)M effect in a dispersion-managed transmission line. The dispersion-managed line consists of many repeated fiber spans, each of which includes a positive- and a negative-dispersion fiber. The analytical expression of the FWM is obtained. The influence of the channel spacing, the fiber spans' number and the compensating dispersion parameter on the FWM effect is analysed. The dispersion-managed transmission line is optimized to depress the generated FWM noise.

Abstract:We systematically analyze the interchannel ultrashort pulses four-wave mixing (FWM) in dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) systems with single-mode fiber (SMF), nonzero dispersion-shifted fiber (NZDSF), and highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF). We investigate the FWM conversion efficiency as functions of channel spacing, fiber length, and signal power. We show that the FWM in DWDM system with HNLF is almost 40 times larger than with NZDSF and 400 times larger than with SMF. We obtain the minima of WDM channel spacings limited by FWM for SMF, NZDSF, and HNLF. The FWM conversion efficiency approaches to a constant as the propagation length increases and is approximately an exponential function of the peak power of incident signals.

Abstract:We report an all-optical switch based on two-pump four-wave mixing in fibers. The switched signal is not shifted in frequency in this scheme. For different signal wavelengths, the pump wavelengths and powers can be optimized to achieve the best performance. The principle of how to design the switch is discussed in detail. A high extinction ratio of -60 dB is obtained when the pump parameters are optimized by a genetic algorithm that exhibits good convergence property and high computing efficiency. The effect of zero-dispersion wavelength fluctuations along the fiber on the switch is analyzed.

Abstract:Fiber four-wave mixing (FWM) is studied for multi-channel, multi-amplifier WDM systems composed of biers with different length and dispersion. By using a derived general theoretical model, the FWM of several systems is analyzed. The results show that the model is important in WDM systems design. It is also proved that the combination of single-mode fiber, which is used as transmission fiber, and high negative dispersion fiber, which is used as dispersion compensation, is an effective way to decrease the fiber FWM.

Abstract:A novel method of optical generation millimeter-wave (mm-wave) signals employing two cascaded optical modulators and four-wave-mixing effect in semiconductor optical amplifiers is proposed. This approach is capable of generating signals of four times, eight times, and 12 times microwave source frequency with high spectral purity and stability. A mm-wave of 42 GHz (12 x fundamental) with a 3-dB linewidth less than 30 Hz and a phase noise less than - 83 dBc/Hz at 10-kHz offset is obtained.

Abstract:Single-photon stimulated four wave mixing (StFWM) processes have great potential for photonic quantum information processing, compatible with optical communication technologies and integrated optoelectronics. In this paper, we demonstrate single-photon StFWM process in a piece of optical fiber, with seeded photons generated by spontaneous four wave mixing process (SpFWM). The effect of the single-photon StFWM is confirmed by time-resolved four-photon coincidence measurement and variation of four-photon coincidence counts under different seed-pump delays. According to the experiment results, the potential performance of quantum cloning machine based on the process is analyzed.
