Abstract:We theoretically present and experimentally demonstrate all-optical wavelength multicasting based on cascaded four-wave mixing (FWM) in highly nonlinear fibers only using a single pump. The cascaded FWM effect is analyzed based on the sum amplitude method, which overcomes the limitation of the number of analyzed idlers, and the performance of the wavelength multicasting is evaluated. By using a continuous wave pump and a pulse train as the signal, multiple-order idlers are experimentally generated and the patterns of 6 multicasting channels are measured. Regardless of the dynamic region of the tunable filter, this method has the potential to realize more multicasting channels, especially when higher pump and signal powers are used.

Abstract:Cascaded fiber geometry with the dispersion of each fiber decreasing is proposed to enhance the multiple four-wave mixing（FWM） generation. The first fiber with relatively large dispersion initiates and accelerates the expansion of multiple FWM, and the second fiber with small dispersion would allow the phase-matching process（thus the spectrum broadening）to keep going. Numerical and experimental results show that with this geometry not only multiple FWM expansion can be accelerated, but also the efficiency of multiple FWM products can be effectively improved with shorter fibers.

Abstract:we report on the generation of cascaded four-wave mixing (CFWM) in a photonic crystal fiber with a high peak power picosecond pulse pumping in the normal dispersion region and a weak continuous wave seeded. We also experimentally investigate the dependence of CFWM bandwidth on the seeding wavelengths. Experimental results demonstrate the existence of optimum seeding wavelengths for broadband CFWM even though the pulse wavelength is 50 nm shorter than the zero dispersion wavelength. And CFWM products spanning more than 300 nm are experimentally obtained.

Abstract:We report on the broadband-cascaded four-wave mixing (CFWM) products generated in a photonic crystal fiber pumped by a picosecond pulse and seeded by two continuous wave (CW) signals. The equal and unequal frequency spaced CFWM products could be obtained through continuously tuning one of the CW wavelengths. Among the equally spaced CFWM products, the smallest frequency spacing was 477 GHz. The influences of the Raman scattering and the third-order dispersion on the CFWM were also discussed. Abstract:We demonstrate almost octave-spanning cascaded four-wave mixing (CFWM) in optical microfibers. Pumped by two synchronized picosecond lasers at about 850 nm, microfibers with a length of 10-20 cm can generate CFWM spanning from a few hundred nanometers to almost one octave, depending on the diameter of the microfibers and the detuning between the two pumps. CFWM in microfibers, which has the advantages of easy fabrication, highly efficient coupling, relatively short length, and easy integration with fiber systems, can be used for applications in widely tunable multiline phase-sensitive amplification, multiwavelength coherent sources, and ultrashort pulse synthesis.
A Multicasting Method Based on Four-Wave Mixing in Highly Nonlinear Fibers

Abstract:Multicasting is an important function of wavelength-routing optical communication networks. An all-optical multicasting is presented and experimentally demonstrated based on four-wave mixing (FWM) in highly nonlinear fibers. An input signal with data information together with a pump are injected into a highly nonlinear fiber and two idlers with new frequencies can be generated through two degenerate FWM processes, which carry the same data information as the input signal. The single input signal is copied to two channels and the pump can also be modulated by this data. The advantage of this scheme consists in the simple configuration, where only a single pump is needed and no other injected lights are required, the uniform powers and tunable wavelengths of the multicasting signals, and the capacity to further increase multicasting channel number.

Abstract:Multiple four-wave-mixing (FWM) processes with multifrequency pumps in optical fibers are investigated theoretically and experimentally. The propagation equations describing the FWM nonlinear interactions between pump waves and "first-order" sideband waves are derived. Based on our theoretical model, the rigorous nonlinear equations governing arbitrary pumps can be developed when the pump waves have equal frequency spacing. The proposed theory can generalize the traditional theory of FWM processes. The rigorous nonlinear equations governing three pumps and three cases of simplified equations governing three, four, and five pumps are achieved. Numerical simulations for three, four, and five pumps are experimentally tested by using a piece of highly nonlinear photonic-crystal fiber, and the experimental observations confirmed our theoretical predictions. The stabilization of waves by multiple FWM processes is proved theoretically and confirmed experimentally.

Abstract:We investigate power-dependent phase-matched four-wave mixing (FWM) in wavelength division multiplexing transmission lines, in which positive and negative dispersion fibers are alternately arranged to manage the dispersion and the dispersion slope. The FWM effect shows power-independent phase matching when the channel power is low. However, it is power dependent at high power. The maximum FWM conversion efficiency is shifted away from the zero channel space in the case of power-dependent phase matching. Optimization of the dispersion system for suppression of the FWM effect is determined.

Abstract:We investigate the efficient generation of broadband cascaded four-wave mixing products seeded at different wavelengths in photonic crystal fibers, with a high-peak power picosecond pulse pumping in the anomalous dispersion region as well as the normal dispersion regime. Multiple four-wave mixing products with different frequency intervals have been experimentally achieved when pumping in the anomalous dispersion region. Measured results present bandwidths of over 500 nm. We have also experimentally demonstrated that only seeding at the Stokes or anti-Stokes peaks can we get the efficient generation of cascaded four-wave mixing or cascaded stimulated Raman scattering when pumping in the normal dispersion regime.

Abstract:The self-stability of multiple four-wave mixing (FWM) processes in the optical fibers is studied both theoretically and experimentally. The coupled-mode equations for the complex amplitudes of four waves are derived. The nonlinear interaction between four optical fields involves a single nondegenerate and two degenerate FWM processes in the third-order nonlinear mixings. The proposed models are compared to the conventional coupled-mode theory of FWM processes and are proven by the experiments. The energy conservation of four waves is achieved, and the power flow relationship between two pump waves and two created waves is obtained. The analytic solutions reveal the self-stability mechanism of multiple FWM processes. The self-stability prediction is experimentally testified by using a kind of photonic-crystal fiber, and such excellence can be applied to achieve dual-wavelength erbium-doped fiber lasers with the excellent uniformity and stability.

Abstract:We integrate a spatial light modulator-based dispersion controller into a cascaded four-wave mixing (CFWM) system. By tuning the group delay dispersion (GDD) and fourth-order dispersion (FOD) terms, we control the CFWM phase matching and demonstrate an output bandwidth tuning of over 3.3×. At the maximum bandwidth, our system covers the telecommunications S-, C-, and L-bands (1466-1641 nm) with an average output power of 300 mW, which is contained in 52 individual lines spaced 374 GHz apart. This method represents a reconfigurable alternative to photonic crystal fibers for dispersion engineering and allows for the use of step-index fiber and customizable power spectral density (PSD) profiles.

Abstract:Cylindrical vector (CV) beams are a set of transverse spatial modes that exhibit a cylindrically symmetric intensity profile and a variable polarization about the beam axis. They are composed of a non-separable superposition of orbital and spin angular momenta. Critically, CV beams are also the eigenmodes of optical fiber and, as such, are of widespread practical importance in photonics and have the potential to increase communications bandwidth through spatial multiplexing. Here, we derive the coupled amplitude equations that describe the four-wave mixing (FWM) of CV beams in optical fibers. These equations allow us to determine the selection rules that govern the interconversion of CV modes in FWM processes. With these selection rules, we show that FWM conserves the total angular momentum, the sum of orbital and spin angular momenta, in the conversion of two input photons to two output photons. When applied to spontaneous FWM, the selection rules show that photon pairs can be generated in CV modes directly and can be entangled in those modes. Such quantum states of light in CV modes could benefit technologies such as quantum key distribution with satellites.

Abstract:In this paper, a model describing the four-wave mixing (FWM) among an arbitrary amount of incident waves is derived and the predictor-corrector method is exploited to solve the equations. Based on the numerical model, we studied methods to promote the energy exchange among the incident waves. The results show that a proper value of phase mismatch can accelerate the energy exchanging among the pump waves and simultaneously reduces the idler wave powers. This model is applied to investigate the behavior of a multiwavelength erbium-doped fiber laser (MWEDFL) exploiting FWM. According to the simulation, through using a 50-m-long nonlinear fiber with nonlinear coefficient of 11 /W/km, 19 lines can be obtained in the output spectrum with power difference <3 dB.

Abstract:We investigate the four-wave mixing (F)M effect in a dispersion-managed transmission line. The dispersion-managed line consists of many repeated fiber spans, each of which includes a positive- and a negative-dispersion fiber. The analytical expression of the FWM is obtained. The influence of the channel spacing, the fiber spans' number and the compensating dispersion parameter on the FWM effect is analysed. The dispersion-managed transmission line is optimized to depress the generated FWM noise.

Abstract:We systematically analyze the interchannel ultrashort pulses four-wave mixing (FWM) in dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) systems with single-mode fiber (SMF), nonzero dispersion-shifted fiber (NZDSF), and highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF). We investigate the FWM conversion efficiency as functions of channel spacing, fiber length, and signal power. We show that the FWM in DWDM system with HNLF is almost 40 times larger than with NZDSF and 400 times larger than with SMF. We obtain the minima of WDM channel spacings limited by FWM for SMF, NZDSF, and HNLF. The FWM conversion efficiency approaches to a constant as the propagation length increases and is approximately an exponential function of the peak power of incident signals.

Abstract:We compare the interchannel four-wave mixing (FWM) in dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) systems with continuous waves, quasi-continuous waves and ultrashort pulses. The differences are theoretically analyzed for the three inputs. We investigate the FWM conversion efficiency as a function of the channel spacing, the fiber length, the single bit energy and the pulse width. It is shown that the FWM effect in DWDM systems with quasi-continuous waves is the strongest and with ultrashort pulses is the lowest among the three cases. The FWM conversion efficiency changes periodically with the propagation length, and it is approximately an exponential function of the single bit energy. The performance of the pulse FWM effect versus the pulse width is different from that of the quasi-continuous wave FWM, which may be one possible way to suppress the interchannel FWM.
