Abstract:We compare the interchannel four-wave mixing (FWM) in dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) systems with continuous waves, quasi-continuous waves and ultrashort pulses. The differences are theoretically analyzed for the three inputs. We investigate the FWM conversion efficiency as a function of the channel spacing, the fiber length, the single bit energy and the pulse width. It is shown that the FWM effect in DWDM systems with quasi-continuous waves is the strongest and with ultrashort pulses is the lowest among the three cases. The FWM conversion efficiency changes periodically with the propagation length, and it is approximately an exponential function of the single bit energy. The performance of the pulse FWM effect versus the pulse width is different from that of the quasi-continuous wave FWM, which may be one possible way to suppress the interchannel FWM.

Abstract:We systematically analyze the interchannel ultrashort pulses four-wave mixing (FWM) in dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) systems with single-mode fiber (SMF), nonzero dispersion-shifted fiber (NZDSF), and highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF). We investigate the FWM conversion efficiency as functions of channel spacing, fiber length, and signal power. We show that the FWM in DWDM system with HNLF is almost 40 times larger than with NZDSF and 400 times larger than with SMF. We obtain the minima of WDM channel spacings limited by FWM for SMF, NZDSF, and HNLF. The FWM conversion efficiency approaches to a constant as the propagation length increases and is approximately an exponential function of the peak power of incident signals.

Abstract:Orthogonal time division multiplexing (OrthTDM) interleaves sinc-shaped pulses to form a high baud-rate signal, with a rectangular spectrum suitable for multiplexing into a Nyquist WDM (N-WDM)-like signal. The problem with generating sinc-shaped pulses is that they theoretically have infinite durations, and even if time bounded for practical implementation, they still require a filter with a long impulse response, hence a large physical size. Previously a method of creating chirped-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) pulses with a chirped arrayed waveguide (AWG) filter, then converting them into interleaved quasi-sinc pulses using dispersive fiber (DF), has been proposed. This produces a signal with a wider spectrum than the equivalent N-WDM signal. We show that a modification to the scheme enables the spectral extent to be reduced for the same data rate. We then analyse the key factors in designing an OrthTDM transmitter, and relate these to the performance of a N-WDM system. We show that the modified transmitter reduces the required guard band between the N-WDM channels. We also simulate a simpler scheme using an unchirped finite-impulse response filter of similar size, which directly creates truncated-sinc pulses without needing a DF. This gives better system performance than either chirped scheme.

Abstract:We investigate power-dependent phase-matched four-wave mixing (FWM) in wavelength division multiplexing transmission lines, in which positive and negative dispersion fibers are alternately arranged to manage the dispersion and the dispersion slope. The FWM effect shows power-independent phase matching when the channel power is low. However, it is power dependent at high power. The maximum FWM conversion efficiency is shifted away from the zero channel space in the case of power-dependent phase matching. Optimization of the dispersion system for suppression of the FWM effect is determined.

Abstract:We investigate the four-wave mixing (F)M effect in a dispersion-managed transmission line. The dispersion-managed line consists of many repeated fiber spans, each of which includes a positive- and a negative-dispersion fiber. The analytical expression of the FWM is obtained. The influence of the channel spacing, the fiber spans' number and the compensating dispersion parameter on the FWM effect is analysed. The dispersion-managed transmission line is optimized to depress the generated FWM noise.

Abstract:Fiber four-wave mixing (FWM) is studied for multi-channel, multi-amplifier WDM systems composed of biers with different length and dispersion. By using a derived general theoretical model, the FWM of several systems is analyzed. The results show that the model is important in WDM systems design. It is also proved that the combination of single-mode fiber, which is used as transmission fiber, and high negative dispersion fiber, which is used as dispersion compensation, is an effective way to decrease the fiber FWM.

Abstract:Employing optical sources with different wavelength as the input optical signals of WDM (wavelength division multiplexing) system, the phenomenon of four wave mixing in the experiment was analyzed. The amplitudes of four wave mixing in different optical fiber chains were compared. In order to decrease the four wave mixing effect, the fiber with zero dispersion wave close to the signal optical pulse should be put far away from Er-doped fiber amplifier in each amplifier spacing.

Abstract:Intra-channel nonlinear effects impose a major limitation to system performance in high speed optical transmission.These effects,which are usually referred to intra-channel four-wave mixing(IFWM) and cross-phase modulation(IXPM),may cause amplitude and timing jitter and lead to serious transmission penalties.The paper discussed causes and several factors of intra-channel pulse interaction.Analysis and numerical simulation derive conclusions as follows:To suppress intra-channel nonlinear effects,phase modulation is superior to amplitude modulation,and post-compensation of dispersion is superior to pre-compensation,especially for large launched power.In addition,the duty cycle of pulse has an optimum value for a certain launched power.

Abstract:Background: The invention of WDM technology in optical communication system has completely revolutionized the telecomm industry through its high data carrying capacity and efficiency of transmission. Advanced optical modulation formats with high spectral efficiency, advanced components like Reconfigurable Optical Add Drop Multiplexers (ROADMS), OXC, and large bandwidth requirements contributed significantly in existence of dynamic, flexible translucent and transparent networks. In these networks, it is common practice to increase the power levels as much as possible to overcome the power penalty effects and better transmission, but this introduces several non-linear impairments in the link and hence degrades the quality of signal flowing. These impairments arise when several high strength optical fields of different wavelengths interact with molecular vibrations and acoustic waves. The different non-linear impacts include Self Phase Modulation (SPM), Cross Phase Modulation (XPM), Four Wave Mixing (FWM) and scattering effects like Stimulated Raman Scattering (SRS), Stimulated Brillouin Scattering (SBS). The main cause of these impairments is variation in refractive index of fiber (also called Kerr effect) due to intensity of signal flowing through fiber. Due to the degradation impact posed by these impairments, it is crucial to analyze their cause, their influence on system performance and mitigation techniques so as to improve the overall quality of transmission. The monitoring of impairments is quite a challenging task due to their dependency on time, present state of network, signals flowing in adjoining channels and fibers. Objective: The present work aims to identify and describe the role of FWM in optical networks. The mathematical model of FWM is studied to know the parameters influencing the overall impact on system performance. The power of optical source, channel spacing, distance of transmission and presence of dispersion are considered as key factors influencing FWM power being developed. Their impact on FWM power and hence, FWM efficiency is calculated. In addition, the influence of FWM on Quality of transmission is quantified in terms of BER and Q-factor. Methods: The analysis is done through a two-channel transmitter system with varied power, channel spacing, distance of transmission and presence of other degradation factors (dispersion) is taken into account. The corresponding optical spectrums are analysed. Results: In this paper, the non-linear impairment FWM posing degradation effect on the signal quality has been discussed. The basics involved are presented along with the mathematical model. It has been found that FWM results in power transfer from one channel to generation of new waves which may lead to power depletion and interference. The new waves generated depend on the number of wavelengths travelling in the fiber and channel spacing. The influence of FWM on system performance is presented in terms of BER and Q-value. Conclusion: It has been concluded that the increased power of transmission and decreased channel spacing are the crucial factors increasing the magnitude of FWM and need to be closely monitored. On the other hand, increased distance of propagation and presence of certain level of dispersion leads to decrease in FWM power. Therefore, if selected carefully, they may act as source of FWM mitigation without requiring any external compensating device.

Abstract:We numerically investigate four-wave-mixing (FWM) based multichannel wavelength conversion for amplitude-modulated signals, phase-modulated signals, together with mixed amplitude and phase modulated signals. This paper also discusses the influence of stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) effects on high-efficiency FWM-based wavelength conversion applications. Our simulation results show that DPSK signals are more suitable for FWM-based multichannel wavelength conversion because the OOK signals will suffer from the inevitable data pattern-dependent pump depletion. In future applications, when the modulation format is partially upgraded from OOK to DPSK, the influence of OOK signals on the updated DPSK signals must be considered when using multichannel wavelength conversion. This influence becomes severe with the increase of OOK channel number. It can be concluded that DPSK signals are more appropriate for both transmission and multichannel wavelength conversion, especially in long haul and high bit-rate system.

Abstract:The paper analyses the effects of intra-channel four-wave mixing (IFWM) on the high-speed optical fiber communication system. A new code format is developed with double 0 and double π phase separating 1 code; it can decrease the transmission penalty from fiber nonlinearity by counteracting the perturbation terms of IFWM. From the simulation of transmission of two classic code data “11011” and “11100”, we find that our proposed code format has a better suppression effect than the alternative modulation inversion (AMI) or the normal RZ format and supports a wider pulse mode. In a 40 Gbps system, the AMI format is 2 dB less than the RZ format, and our proposed format is 1 dB less than the AMI format when a 1 dB eye open penalty is taken as a metewand. Moreover, it can be realized as easily as the AMI format.

Abstract:Four-wave mixing (FWM) is the dominant nonlinear effect which limits allowable liber input power in unequal channel spaced wavelength-division-multiplexed (WDM) transmission systems employing dispersionshifted fiber (DSF). By using a Gaussian noise approximation and a polynomial fit, a simple analytical formula is derived to predict allowable fiber input power due to limitation of FWM. Calculation examples agree well with the experimental results in published papers. Using this formula, one can easily obtain the maximum channel input power limited by FWM.

Abstract:An essential feature of a long-haul Optical Communication System (OCS) is to transmit huge volumes of data over long distances. In OCS, fiber dispersion and Four-Wave Mixing (FWM) play negative roles in achieving this, as the propagation of the light signal, associated with the pulse, travels at varying speeds. Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) system is not spared from these identified limitations. In this work, a mathematical analysis for the dispersion and FWM was presented and validated through simulation software. The research was designed and implemented using an optical simulation software tool, OptiSystem 17.0. Transmission parameters of dispersion and Nonlinear (NL) effects due to refractive index, FWM, were considered. The research was carried out on a 125 km-long fiber link and was investigated under a 16-channel DWDM system. The effects of identified limitations on the performance of the DWDM system with channel arrangement of 100, 50, and 25 GHz were further explored. This work compared the DWDM system under these different channel arrangements. The transmission performance of the DWDM system was evaluated based on signal power, noise power, and eye pattern. The results obtained show that any increase in capacity causes significant decreases in the performance of the DWDM system. It was, however, noted that noise power is independent of an increase in bit rate. The results obtained further revealled that the launched power of the system must be reduced for better performance of the DWDM system and improved immunity against identified limitations.

Abstract:We present an improved approach to determine the zero-dispersion wavelength by measurement of the four-wave mixing (FWM) effect employing the two-tunable-laser scanning method. The FWM behaviour of combined fibres with two different zero-dispersion wavelengths is investigated theoretically and experimentally. The results are compared with those by regular zero-dispersion wavelength test instrument using phase shift technique. The theoretical and experimental results confirm the feasibility of determination of zero-dispersion wavelength by FWM.

Abstract:Properties of four-wave mixing (FWM) in the semiconductor laser amplifier are studied experimentally in this paper. The optical phase conjugation of the mixing wave is applied to compensate the chromatic dispersion of transmission fiber. It is presented experimental results of the transmission of short optical pulses with 12-ps width over 204 km standard single mode fiber. The results confirm that mid-span spectral inversion (MSSI) employing FWM in a semiconductor laser amplifier is one of potential dispersion compensation techniques for optical transmission over standard single mode fiber with bit rate beyond 40Gb/s.

Abstract:We theoretically present and experimentally demonstrate all-optical wavelength multicasting based on cascaded four-wave mixing (FWM) in highly nonlinear fibers only using a single pump. The cascaded FWM effect is analyzed based on the sum amplitude method, which overcomes the limitation of the number of analyzed idlers, and the performance of the wavelength multicasting is evaluated. By using a continuous wave pump and a pulse train as the signal, multiple-order idlers are experimentally generated and the patterns of 6 multicasting channels are measured. Regardless of the dynamic region of the tunable filter, this method has the potential to realize more multicasting channels, especially when higher pump and signal powers are used.

Abstract:Multicasting is an important function of wavelength-routing optical communication networks. An all-optical multicasting is presented and experimentally demonstrated based on four-wave mixing (FWM) in highly nonlinear fibers. An input signal with data information together with a pump are injected into a highly nonlinear fiber and two idlers with new frequencies can be generated through two degenerate FWM processes, which carry the same data information as the input signal. The single input signal is copied to two channels and the pump can also be modulated by this data. The advantage of this scheme consists in the simple configuration, where only a single pump is needed and no other injected lights are required, the uniform powers and tunable wavelengths of the multicasting signals, and the capacity to further increase multicasting channel number.

Abstract:The influence of degenerate four- wave mixing ( FWM) on the performance of supercontinuum-based multi-wavelength optical source has been investigated in detail experimentally and theoretically. Numerical simulation results show that the degenerate FWM effect has a deteriorative influence on the spectral uniformity and the optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) of supercontinuum-based optical source, and by suppressing degenerate FWM effect the performance enhancement of the supercontinuum can be achieved successfully. These results are also confirmed by our experiments. Experimentally, by suppressing degenerate FWM the crosstalk of adjacent channels to the filtered channel can be reduced by as much as 15 dB, and consequently the measured receiver sensitivity at 10 Gbit/s for the filtered optical source is improved from -1.7 to -17.8 dBm.

Abstract:The effects of the position of dispersion compensation fibre on 4×10Gbs−1 WDM systems with different duty cycle are investigated. With the long amplifier spacing and large input power, no matter what the duty cycle is, the performance of the system with DCF-first is worse than that with SMF-first. The best performance can be obtained with a duty cycle of 0.5, and it is independent of the position of DCF. With the short amplifier spacing and small input power, the system performance with NRZ format and DCF-first is better than that of other systems. It means that NRZ format and DCF-first should be employed in a WDM system with short amplifier spacing.
