Abstract:The dressed four-wave mixing (FWM) in a four-level 85 Rb atomic system, experimentally demonstrated in this paper, is comprised by two coexisting processes. One is emission signal due to enhanced nonlinear via electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). The other is the Bragg reflection of probe beam because of the created photonic band gap (PBG), which is affected by both linear and third-order nonlinear susceptibility. Moreover, we have demonstrated that different experimental parameters can significantly influence the measured signal with flexibly controlled PBG. These studies are found useful for understanding the fundamental mechanisms in generated FWM processing.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate degenerate intra-modal four-wave mixing (FWM) processes among orbital angular momentum modes in a family designed ring-core fiber. The designed fiber provide both large effective refractive index difference and low dispersion between multiple modes in the C-band. The signal wave with different modes generated by intra-modal FWM processes was examined using mode de-multiplexed system.

Abstract:We report controllable azimuthons of four-wave mixing (FWM), which can be modulated by several parameters in experiment. The spot number, splitting depth, rotation angular velocity and direction of such azimuthons can be controlled by the frequency and intensity of the FWM signal or the dressing field through the cross-phase modulation due to atomic coherence. The intensity gain of the azimuthons can be modulated by frequency detuning through quantum parametric amplification. The quantum correlated FWM vortex is observed in experiment. We also discuss the applications of such controllable azimuthons in all-optical circulators, multiplexers (demultiplexers), routers, cross-connects and optical amplifiers.

Abstract:We report on the conception, fabrication and characterization of a new concept of optical fiber enabling a precise control of the ratio between the 2nd and 4th-order of chromatic dispersion (respectively \b{eta}2 and \b{eta}4) at 1.55 micro-meter which is at the heart of the Four-Wave-Mixing (FWM) generation. For conventional highly nonlinear fiber the sensitivity of this ratio to fiber geometry fluctuations is very critical, making the fabrication process challenging. The new design fiber reconciles the accurate control of chromatic dispersion properties and fabrication by standard stack and draw method, allowing a robust and reliable method against detrimental fluctuations parameters during the fabrication process. Experimental frequency conversion with FWM in the new design fiber is demonstrated.

Abstract:In this paper we theoretically study ultrafast four-wave mixing (FWM) in fibre optical parametric amplifiers. The nonlinear coupled-amplitude equations are applied to discuss the contributions of self-phase modulation, cross-phase modulation, FWM, temporal walk-off, group-velocity dispersion and third-order dispersion in a degenerate FWM process. In the case of nondispersive FWM, the pulse duration remains nearly unchanged while the shape is distorted and the spectrum exhibits asymmetric broadening in the region where the pump, signal and idler pulses are temporally overlapped. In the case of dispersive FWM, the combined effect of dispersion and nonlinearity leads to both temporal and spectral changes in all the propagation length.
Optimizing Spectral Phase Transfer in Four-Wave Mixing with Gas-filled Capillaries: A Trade-off Study

Abstract:Four-wave mixing (FWM) in gas-filled hollow-core capillaries, a nonlinear optical process that mixes signal and pump photon frequencies to generate idler frequency photons, offers a method for precise spectral phase transfer from signal to idler at ultrashort timescales and extreme powers. However, this regime is challenged by competing linear and nonlinear dynamics, leading to significant trade-offs between spectral phase transfer and conversion efficiency. Our computational investigation focuses on upconversion of femtosecond pulses from the infrared (IR) to the ultraviolet (UV), a range notoriously difficult to manipulate. We explore an intermediate energy regime that strikes an optimal balance between FWM-mediated phase-transfer fidelity and nonlinear conversion efficiency. By adjusting the energy ratios and spectral phase profiles of the input signal, we achieve conversion efficiencies of approximately 5%-15% while maintaining an effectively quasi-linear spectral phase transfer. These findings contribute to establishing first-principles and scaling laws essential for applications such as high-precision imaging, spectroscopy, quantum transduction, and distributed entangled interconnects, facilitating advanced control of ultrafast photonic and electronic wavepackets in quantum materials with unprecedented spatial and temporal precision.

Abstract:Abstract We theoretically study the four-wave mixing (FWM) response in a quantum dot-cavity coupling system, where a two-level quantum dot (QD) is placed in an optical cavity while the cavity mode is coupled to the nanomechanical resonator via radiation pressure. The influences of the QD-cavity coupling strength, the Rabi coupling strength of the QD, and the power of the pump light on the FWM intensity are mainly considered. The numerical results show that the FWM intensity in this hybrid system can be significantly enhanced by increasing the QD-cavity coupling strength. In addition, the FWM intensity can be effectively modulated by the Rabi coupling strength and the pump power. Furthermore, the effects of the cavity decay rate and the cavity-pump detuning on the FWM signal are also explored. The obtained results may have potential applications in the fields of quantum optics and quantum information science.

Abstract:The future quantum networks will require reversible coherent conversion and modulation between microwave and optical photons to link the quantum information-processing ability of microwave and long-distance distribution ability of optical photons. Here, we present a scheme of bi-directional phase controllable four-wave mixing (FWM) between microwave and optical fields in the hybrid opto-electromechanical system. As an intermediate interface, a nanomechanical resonator optomechanically couples both optomechanical cavities in the optical and microwave frequency domains by the radiation pressure forces. We can find the four peaks of FWM, study the effects of the phases of the driven fields on the total, absolute, and cross correlation FWMs, and achieve the laws of phase control FWM based on quantum interference. In particular, we believe that such a hybrid opto- and electro-mechanical device incorporating highly coherent and compact mechanical elements on a chip has some potential functions for electro-optic modulation. We expect that such a modulator will have a broad range of applications including in optical communications and further quantum networks.

Abstract:We investigate the optical nonreciprocity induced by the parametrical amplification and the radiation trapping in an atomic photonic bandgap system both theoretically and experimentally. We use two pumping fields to generate entangled photon pairs from spontaneous parametric four-wave mixing, as well as the signals in which they can be enhanced by the feedback dressing effect. Therefore, the frequency difference and the shape change due to this feedback dressing on the two-arm ramps of one round trip are observed. Such optical nonreciprocity can be easily controlled by multiple experimental parameters (frequency detuning, power, and phase) of the dressing beams. In addition, the enhancement and suppression switching induced by the double dressing or triple dressing conditions are also studied. This optical nonreciprocity can contribute to the development of quantum information processing and quantum communications.
Effective multiband synthetic four-wave mixing by cascading quadratic processes

Abstract:Four wave mixing (FWM) is an important way to generate supercontinuum and frequency combs in the mid-infrared band. Here, we obtain simultaneous synthetic FWM in the visible and mid-infrared bands by cascading quadratic nonlinear processes in a periodically poled lithium niobate crystal (PPLN), which has a 110dB(at 3000nm) higher conversion efficiency than the FWM directly generated by third-order susceptibilities in bulk PPLN crystals. A general model of this process is developed that is in full agreement with the experimental verifications. The frequency difference between the new frequency components can be freely tuned by changing the frequency difference of the dual pump lasers. Furthermore, by increasing the conversion bandwidth and efficiency of the cascaded processes, it is feasible to generate frequency combs in three bands the visible, near-infrared and mid-infrared bands simultaneously through high-order cascaded processes. This work opens up a new avenue toward free-tuning multiband frequency comb generation with multi-octaves frequency spanning, which will have significant applications in fields such as mid-infrared gas sensing, lidar and precision spectroscopy.

Abstract:We show that the four-wave mixing (FWM) processes in a multi-Zeeman level atomic system can be enhanced and suppressed by changing the polarization of one of the pump beams. Different polarization states of the pump beams will act on different transition pathways among the multi-Zeeman levels with different transition strengths, which affect the FWM efficiencies. An additional dress field applied to the adjacent transition can cause energy level splitting and therefore control the enhancement and suppression of the FWM processes in the system. The experimental results are in good agreement with our theoretical calculations.

Abstract:The dependence of four-wave mixing (FWM) generated in Rubidium (Rb) vapor with electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) window on polarizations of the incident fields is studied both theoretically and experimentally. The polarization properties of FWM signal under diverse laser polarization configurations are studied and compared. The results indicate that FWM signal is linear polarized when all incident fields are linear polarized. However, FWM becomes elliptical polarized if any incident field is elliptical polarized. Moreover, the polarizations of the incident fields also influence the dressing effect of the coupling field on FWM process. As the polarization of coupling field (or probe field) varying from linear to circular, the dressing effect gets stronger. By controlling the polarizations of the incident beams polarizations, we can manipulate the polarization state of FWM signal and the dressing effect as well.

Abstract:A fiber loop mirror constructed from two polarization-maintaining dispersion-shifted fibers is proposed and four-wave mixing (FWM) in this loop is theoretically investigated. Our results show that this fiber loop can inherently suppress the pump and signal waves even without optical filtering in continuous-wave or long-pulse cases. The difference between one-pump (nearly degenerate) and two-pump (nondegenerate) FWMs is also presented.
Coherent competition and control between three-wave mixing and four-wave mixing in superconducting circuits

Abstract:Exploring intermixing and interplay between different frequency-mixing processes has always been one of the interesting subjects at the interface of nonlinear optics with quantum optics. Here we investigate coherent competition and control between three-wave mixing (TWM) and four-wave mixing (FWM) in a cyclic three-level superconducting quantum system. In the weak control-field regime, strong competition leads to an alternating oscillation between TWM and FWM signals and this oscillation is a signature of strong energy exchange between these two nonlinear processes. In particular, such oscillation is absent from conventional multi-wave mixing in atomic systems. Surprisingly, synchronous TWM and FWM processes are demonstrated in the strong control-field regime and, at the same time, their efficiencies can be as high as 40% and 45%, respectively. Our study shows that these competitive behaviors between TWM and FWM can be manipulated by tuning the control-field intensity.

Abstract:Rydberg-dressed four-wave mixing (FWM) is theoretically and experimentally demonstrated with two electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) windows generated in a Y-type Rb85 atomic configuration. Such dressing effect related to Rydberg states can lead to enhancement and suppression in the FWM process, which can be manipulated by the frequency detuning, Rabi frequency, and polarization of laser fields. Particularly, with the enhancement condition satisfied, coexisting FWM and Rydberg six-wave mixing (SWM) peaks with ultranarrow linewidth (much less than 30 MHz) are simultaneously observed. The controllable enhancement and suppression in a Rydberg-EIT medium can provide a novel nondestructive nonlinear method to investigate the spectrum involving Rydberg excitation in the atomic ensemble above room temperature.
