Abstract:Soft metal Cu nanoparticles were hybrided on the surface of graphene (Cu/RGO nanohybrid) by a facile in situ reduction method for nano-enhancing the tribological, mechanical, and thermal properties of phenolic resin (PF) nanocomposites. It shows the nano-Cu can be uniformly attached on the RGO lamellae with evenly spread out structure. With enhanced dispersion, the Cu/RGO nanohybrid presented effectively synergistic effect of friction-reducing and wear-resisting in the paraffin oil. This Cu/RGO filling PF nanocomposites also displayed better mechanical performance and higher thermal stability than single RGO or nano-Cu for the good dispersion and interfacial compatibility of Cu/RGO nanohybrid in PF matrix, which could prevent the generation and propagation of cracks, bear much more shear stress, and suppress the chain segment movement and decomposition of PF. With the addition of 2.0 wt% Cu/RGO nanohybrid, friction coefficient and wear rate of the PF nanocomposites were reduced by 23.7% and 32.5%, respectively. This synergistic friction reduction and anti-wear effect of Cu/RGO nanohybrid in PF matrix could be reasoned by the comprehensive promotion of dispersity, interfacial compatibility, mechanical, and thermal performance of the nanocomposites. Morphology of wear surface indicates the main wear mode changed from the severe fatigue wear, adhesive wear, and abrasive wear of pure PF to slight abrasive wear and adhesive wear of Cu/RGO/PF composites. Based on the analysis of friction and wear schematic, the synergistic wear resistance mechanism of Cu/RGO nanohybrid in PF matrix was concluded by the good dispersion, high surface activity, and microscopic interlayer slippage of the RGO-loaded nano-Cu, which would facilitate the formation of complete and stable friction transfer film. This simple soft metal nanoparticles loading graphene strategy could provide some effective references of designing and optimizing nanomaterials for improving the tribological, mechanical, and thermal performance of polymer-based nanocomposites. Facile in situ prepared Cu/RGO nanohybrid presented good dispersion and synergistic friction-reducing and wear-resisting performance.Graphic Abstract
