Abstract:High quality lithium niobate thin film microresonators provide an ideal platform for on-chip nonlinear optics applications. However, the phase matching condition for efficient parametric process sets a high requirement for fabrication control. Here we demonstrate a photonic molecular structure composed of two strongly coupled lithium niobate microdisks of different diameters fabricated using femtosecond laser micromachining and focused ion beam milling. With a continuous wave excitation, rich nonlinear optical processes including cascaded four-wave mixing and stimulated Raman scattering were observed around the second harmonic wavelength. Our results indicate that the coupled microdisks form a superior system for nonlinear optical process.

Abstract:Compact all-pass and add-drop microring resonators (radius=10 μm) integrated with grating couplers working at 2 μm wavelength are designed, fabricated, and characterized on a commercial 340-nm-thick-top-silicon silicon-on-insulator platform. They are suitable for high-volume integrated optical circuits at 2 μm wavelength as the fabrication process involved are uncomplicated and complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS)-process compatible, thus making them more convenient to be utilized. The performance of the grating couplers, based on four most important parameters, has been simulated and optimized. The simulation and experimental results of grating couplers show the lowest coupling loss of 4.5 dB and 6.5 Db, respectively. By utilizing the grating couplers to couple light in and out from the chip, the designed microring resonators have been tested. The experimental results of microring resonators show that an extinction ratio of 12 dB and a quality factor of 11,200 can be achieved. To the best of our knowledge, this is thus far the smallest microring resonator ever demonstrated at this wavelength.

Abstract:A 170 nm wide hybrid plasmonic waveguide with a loss of 0.08 dB/μm is demonstrated experimentally. Directional couplers with different gaps and microdisks with 0.5 μm radius based on such waveguides are also presented.

Abstract:We numerically report the submicrometer radius (0.5 μm) and high confinement (mode area ~λ(2)/1200) plasmonic ring resonators for both all-pass and add-drop filters based on the hybrid metal-oxide-semiconductor (Ag-SiO(2)-Si) waveguide platform. The best tradeoff between the propagation length and the confinement of this hybrid plasmonic waveguide platform is also discussed and compared to the dielectric-loaded plasmonic waveguide counterpart. We show that the ring resonator all-pass filter features an extinction ratio as high as 23 dB with a transmission loss of 1.5 dB, and a wide free spectral range of 168 nm with a bandwidth of 14 nm. Moreover, the demonstrated add-drop filter achieves an extinction ratio larger than 12 dB with a channel isolation between the through and drop channels of 13.5 dB at the resonant wavelength. These demonstrated plasmonic devices reveal as potential building blocks for future nanoscale electronic-photonic integrated circuits.

Abstract:Optical properties of two identical coupled disks forming a "hybrid photonic-plasmonic molecule" are investigated. Each disk is a metal-dielectric structure supporting hybrid plasmonic-photonic whispering-gallery (WG) modes. The WG modes of a molecule split into two groups of nearly-degenerate modes, i.e., bonding and anti-bonding modes. The oscillation of quality factor (Q) with the inter-disk gap d and significant enhancement at certain inter-disk gaps can be observed. An enhanced Q factor of 1821 for a hybrid photonic-plasmonic molecule composed of two 1.2 μm-diameter disks, compared with that for a single disk, is achieved. The corresponding Purcell factor is 191, making the hybrid photonic-plasmonic molecule an optimal choice for subwavelength-scale device miniaturization and light-matter interactions. Moreover, the far-field emission pattern of the hybrid photonic-plasmonic molecule exhibits an enhanced directional light output by tuning the azimuthal mode number for both bonding and anti-bonding modes.

Abstract:We demonstrate high quality (intrinsic Q factor ~2.8×106) racetrack microresonators fabricated on lithium niobate (LN) thin film with a free spectral range (FSR) of ~86.38 pm. By integrating microelectrodes alongside the two straight arms of the racetrack resonator, the resonance wavelength around the 1550 nm can be red shifted by 92 pm when the electric voltage is raised from -100 V to 100 V. The microresonators of the tuning range spanning over a full FSR is fabricated using photolithography assisted chemo-mechanical etching (photolithography assisted chemo-mechanical etching, PLACE).

Abstract:We analyze and design a hybrid dielectric-loaded plasmonic waveguide (HDLW) featuring a long propagation length and strong field confinement, for efficient control and confinement of light in the subwavelength area of λ2/160. The HDLW is then used to build compact wavelength selective components of high optical performance, including ring resonators (RR) and add-drop filters (ADF). In particular, we demonstrate RRs having a small ring radius of 2 μm, a low transmission loss of 0.8 dB, a high extinction ratio of 21 dB, and a free spectral range of 66 nm. Moreover, an ADF with a ring radius of 2 μm features a 12 dB extinction ratio, a transmission loss of 0.9 dB, and a channel isolation level of 10 dB at the resonant wavelength. The compact footprint and superior performance of these plasmonic components make them promising building blocks for future nanoscale electronic-photonic integrated circuits for data communication and sensing applications.
Single-Mode Silicon-On-Insulator Elliptical Microdisk Resonators with High Q Factors

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a novel elliptical microdisk resonator which enables single-mode operation with high quality (Q) factor. Such elliptical microdisk resonators with pedestal, which consist of plenty of smoothly changing bends with modified curvature radii, can easily achieve single-mode operation due to selective losses introduced by mode transmission mismatches and small curvature radii portion inside the elliptical microdisks. We fabricated the devices on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform. Single-mode resonance with high quality factor (Q) of ~105 was experimentally realized. Besides, the proposed elliptical microdisk provides larger coupling strength compared to normal circular microdisk, and hence enables critical coupling with easy-to-fabricate gaps.

Abstract:Characteristic analyses are given for a bent silicon hybrid plasmonic waveguide, which has the ability of submicron bending (e.g., R = 500 nm) even when operating at the infrared wavelength range (1.2 μm~2 μm). A silicon hybrid plasmonic submicron-donut resonator is then presented by utilizing the sharp-bending ability of the hybrid plasmonic waveguide. In order to enable long-distance optical interconnects, a pure dielectric access waveguide is introduced for the present hybrid plasmonic submicron-donut resonator by utilizing the evanescent coupling between this pure dielectric waveguide and the submicron hybrid plasmonic resonator. Since the hybrid plasmonic waveguide has a relatively low intrinsic loss, the theoretical intrinsic Q-value is up to 2000 even when the bending radius is reduced to 800 nm. By using a three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method, the spectral response of hybrid plasmonic submicron-donut resonators with a bending radius of 800 nm is simulated. The critical coupling of the resonance at around 1423 nm is achieved by choosing a 80 nm-wide gap between the access waveguide and the resonator. The corresponding loaded Q-value of the submicron-donut resonator is about 220.

Abstract:The key challenge of the plasmonic waveguide is to achieve simultaneously both the long propagation length and high confinement. The hybrid dielectric-loaded plasmonic waveguide consists of a SiO 2 stripe sandwiched between a Si-nanowire and a silver film and thus promises as a best candidate to overcome this challenge. We propose to exploit this unique property of this structure to design different high-efficient silicon-based plasmonic components including waveguide, power splitter, and wavelength-selective ring resonator. As a result, the proposed power splitter with a waveguide cross section ( λ 2 /60) and a strong mode confinement area (~ λ 2 /240) features a low power transmission loss (<0.4 dB) at the optimal arm length of 4 μm with respect to different separation distances of output arms. Moreover, we also demonstrate that a plasmonic ring resonator with a compact ring radius of 2 μm may achieve high optical performance such as high-extinction ratio of 30 dB, large free spectral range of 67 nm, and small bandwidth of 0.6 nm. These superior performances make them promising building blocks for integrated nanophotonic circuits.

Abstract:A novel on-chip Fano device is experimentally demonstrated operating at telecom wavelengths, which consists of an ultracompact plasmonic nanocavity integrated with two Si waveguides on a silicon-on-insulator substrate. It is observed that an Au symmetric split ring with a large linewidth can be coupled to an embedded Au nanorod with a narrow linewidth via excitation of an Si waveguide, contributing to a Fano resonance phenomenon. In addition, the relative precise control of the resonant properties, including the depth, lineshape, and central wavelength, is realized by varying the rotation angle of the Au nanorod. For further investigations, a coupled Lorentz oscillator model is applied to study the transmission peak arising within an absorption region in the nanocavity. Slow-light effects and sensing characteristics are also verified with finite difference time domain simulations and numerical calculations. This device has achieved Fano resonance in integrated photonic-plasmonic hybrid circuits, which may find utility in optical communications, buffering, and sensing.

Abstract:We propose a compact 1-mu m-radius microring resonator sensor based on a hybrid plasmonic waveguide on a silicon-on-insulator substrate. The hybrid waveguide is composed of a metal-gap-silicon structure, where the optical energy is greatly enhanced in the narrow gap. We use the finite element method to numerically analyze the device optical characteristics as a biochemical sensor. As the optical field in the hybrid micoring resonator has a large overlap with the upper-cladding sensing medium, the sensitivity is very high compared to other dielectric microring resonator sensors. The compactness of the hybrid microring resonator is resulted from the balance between bending radiation loss and metal absorption loss. The proposed hybrid microring resonator sensors have the main advantages of small footprint and high sensitivity and can be potentially integrated in an array form on a chip for highly-efficient lab-on-chip biochemical sensing applications.
Thermally tunable ultracompact Fano resonator on a silicon photonic chip

Abstract:A thermally tunable ultracompact Fano resonator on a silicon photonic chip is reported. The Fano resonator is implemented by using an add-drop microdisk resonator (MDR) with the through and drop ports connected by two waveguides and combined via an adiabatic 2×2, 3 dB coupler to form a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI). Due to the resonant mode interference between the MDR and the MZI, a Fano resonance with an asymmetric line shape resulted. A p-type-doped microheater is incorporated in the MDR to achieve thermal tunability. By tuning the direct current (DC) voltage applied to the microheater, the Fano resonance is tuned. The proposed Fano resonator is designed, fabricated, and characterized. Measurement results show that a Fano resonance with an extinction ratio of 30.2 dB and a slope rate of 41 dB/nm is achieved. When the microheater is tuned by tuning the DC voltage with a power from 0 to 22.9 mW, the Fano line shape is largely tuned with the Fano parameter q tuned from negative to positive and a maximum wavelength shifting as large as 15.97 nm. Thanks to its ultracompact configuration, and strong and fast tunability with low power consumption, the integrated Fano resonator holds a high potential for applications such as on-chip optical switching and sensing.

Abstract:We present a study of the first silicon microdisk resonators which are smaller than the free-space resonant wavelength in all spatial dimensions. Spectral details of whispering gallery modes with azimuthal mode number m = 4-7 are measured in microdisks with diameters between 1.35 and 1.89microm and are studied at wavelengths from 1.52 to 1.62microm. For the structures considered here, m = 5 is the highest azimuthal mode order in a subwavelength cavity and has measured Q = 1250. These results agree well with theoretical calculations using a finite difference frequency domain method and fit an exponential scaling law relating Q to disk radius via m.
Hybridization-induced resonances with high quality factor in a plasmonic concentric ring-disk nanocavity

Abstract:Plasmonic resonators have drawn more attention due to the ability to confine light into subwavelength scale. However, they always suffer from a low quality (Q) factor owing to the intrinsic loss of metal. Here, we numerically propose a plasmonic resonator with ultra-high Q factor based on plasmonic metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide structures. The resonator consists of a disk cavity surrounded by a concentric ring cavity, possessing an ultra-small volume. Arising from the plasmon hybridization between plasmon modes in the disk and ring cavity, the induced bonding hybridized modes have ultra-narrow full wave at half maximum (FWHM) as well as ultra-high Q factors. The FWHM can be nearly 1 nm and Q factor can be more than 400. Furthermore, such device can act as a refractive index sensor with ultra-high figure of merit (FOM). This work provides a novel approach to design plasmonic high-Q-factor resonators, and has potential on-chip applications such as filters, sensors and nanolasers.
