Abstract:Resonant micro-optic gyros (RMOGs) with waveguide-type ring resonators are promising candidates for applications demanding small, light, and robust gyros. However, the nonzero bias at the gyro output fluctuates in terms of both the bias and the bias stability, owing to the temperature variations of the waveguide-type resonator. In particular, the temperature sensitivity of the bias stability varies greatly depending on the temperature. This paper intends to reveal that these observed fluctuations arise from the temperature-dependent polarization fluctuation. We will investigate how such polarization fluctuation affects the bias of the gyro-output through the state of polarization of the input beam, the polarization characteristics of the resonator coupler, and the temperature variation of the resonator. Both our numerical simulation and experimental verification are carried out, which, for the first time to our best knowledge, demonstrate that the long-term stability of the RMOG can be significantly improved by optimizing the temperature of the waveguide resonator.

Abstract:A novel hybrid single-polarization (SP) fiber ring resonator is demonstrated by using a polarization-maintaining coupler formed by splicing a section of SP fiber into the resonator. The SP fiber selectively eliminates the unwanted resonance by introducing high loss for the unwanted eigenstates of polarization in the resonator. The calculated result shows that this hybrid SP resonator is a good candidate for a tactical-grade performance gyro with a high environmental temperature stability. The experiment shows that the desired resonance in the resonator can keep an excellent stability in a wide temperature range, thus the temperature-dependent polarization-fluctuation drift in the resonant fiber optic gyro is sufficiently suppressed. As a result, a random walk coefficient of 0.08°/√h and a typical bias stability below 0.3°/h for an integration time of 300 s have been carried out.

Abstract:A method to decrease the polarization-fluctuation induced drift in a resonator fiber optic gyro ( R-FOG) is demonstrated by inserting two in-line polarizers in a polarization-maintaining fiber resonator with twin 90 polarization-axis rotated splices. The in-line polarizers attenuate the unwanted resonance by introducing high loss for the unwanted eigenstates of polarization in the resonator. Compared to the resonator without in-line polarizers, the polarization-fluctuation induced drift is reduced by 6 x 10(3) times. The desired resonance in the resonator can keep excellent stability in a wide temperature range; thus the temperature-dependent polarization-fluctuation drift in the R-FOG is sufficiently suppressed. A typical bias stability of 4.7 degrees/h over 6500 s with an integration time of 10 s has been carried out. Abstract:In this paper, we theoretically analyze the wavelength temperature stability of multifunctional integrated optical chips (MIOCs) applied on fiber optic gyroscopes (FOGs). This study is critical for improving the temperature stability of the FOG scale factor, which is a significant parameter used to evaluate the dynamic characteristics of FOGs. Analytical and multiphysics simulations uncover two significant new predictions. First, changes in environmental temperature can lead to misalignment of the coupling structure between the chip and fiber, which is the main reason for the deterioration of the MIOC wavelength temperature stability. Second, misalignment caused by temperature changes is related to the initial alignment parameters of the coupling structure. Therefore, we can effectively improve the wavelength temperature stability of an MIOC by correctly choosing the initial alignment state of the coupling structure. Space coupling experiments are also presented to verify these predictions, and the experimental and simulation results are in good agreement.

Abstract:In this study, to measure the frequency drift characteristics of the narrow-linewidth laser, we provide a method with high accuracy and adjustable measuring range that can be applied in a resonant optical gyro (ROG) system. In an ROG system, the laser frequency drift characteristics, such as fluctuation range and frequency, influence the performance of the closed-loop frequency-locked module. To measure the above performance of the laser, we proposed a novel measurement system based on the Fabry-Perot cavity. We proved the feasibility of the scheme through theory and simulation. Then, the calibration of the experimental device and the measurement of the tested laser were completed. The measurement accuracy of this method is 1.2 kHz, and the measurement range reaches +/- 60 MHz, which can be adjusted by the modulation index. The results show that the laser has a frequency fluctuation of 30 MHz in the stabilization stage, and there is mainly a low-frequency component under 5 Hz in the frequency domain of the laser frequency fluctuation. Furthermore, this measurement scheme can be applied in other fiber sensor systems to evaluate the effect of laser frequency fluctuation on system output performance.

Abstract:In a resonant fiber optical gyroscope (RFOG) system, the imperfection of light intensity is primarily categorized into two parts: intensity fluctuation and inconsistent power of two paths. Firstly, the error of the intensity fluctuation effect on the RFOG scale factor is presented and simulated. Secondly, the RFOG bias drift caused by the Kerr effect is simulated when the intensity fluctuates. Next, an RFOG system with the servo of intensity stable is proposed. Experimental results confirm that the intensity fluctuation of the two paths is effectively suppressed, and the Kerr effect error can be effectively eliminated. Finally, the light intensity stability improves more than 30 dB, the RFOG bias stability decreases at least 6 dB, and the scale factor nonlinearly is suppressed by 20 dB.

Abstract:Polarization fluctuation owing to temperature variations of the fiber ring resonator(FRR)is one of the main optical noises,which seriously affects detection accuracy of resonator fiber optic gyroscope,it can be effectively sup?pressed by controlling temperature of resonator. In order to suppress polarization fluctuation to reduce the deteriora?tion of R-FOG accuracy caused by temperature changes of FRR,the effect of temperature variations on resonance curve and demodulation curve were theoretically analyzed in this paper. Experiments to research resonant character?istics and demodulation curve features and zero bias and zero bias stability at the gyro output were carried out under different temperatures,and experimental results were analyzed. Results show that by controlling the temperature around the fiber ring resonator to 27.00℃,phase separation between the unwanted resonance and the desired reso?nance achieves farthest,the desired resonance is primly symmetrical about the resonant frequency point,slope of the linear region on demodulation curve reaches its maximum,detection error of resonant frequency can be ignored in this state;a zero bias stability of 0.07 °/s of gyro is obtained in sampling time of 150 s,which is almost 100 times small than that when the temperature of resonantor is 25.50℃,detection accuracy of gyro is markedly improved.

Abstract:The waveguide-type ring resonator (WRR) is the key rotation-sensing element in a resonant micro-optic gyroscope (RMOG). A universal model used to analyze both the polarization characteristics of the WRR and corresponding temperature-related polarization error in the RMOG is presented. It indicates that the polarization problem stems from the excitation of two polarization states within the WRR. Unequal variations of incident lights on the cavity in the two directions can cause bias errors at the RMOG output. With the application of different silica WRRs to the RMOG, the polarization errors are tested and verify the theoretical results. Finally, a segment of tilted waveguide gratings with Brewster's angle is fabricated on the silica waveguide within the cavity. The measured polarization extinction ratio of the output light from the WRR is as high as 35.2 dB. The corresponding temperature dependence of the polarization error is theoretically reduced to 0.0019 (degrees/s)/degrees C, which indicates that temperature control is sufficient for a tactical grade RMOG. An Open-Loop RFOG Based on 2nd/4th Harmonic Feedback Technique to Suppress Phase Modulation Index’s Drift

Abstract:In this paper, how the phase modulation index’s drift affects an open-loop resonator fiber optic gyro’s (RFOG’s) performance is discussed. By using the ratio of the second to fourth harmonic (2nd/4th harmonic), a harmonic feedback technique is proposed to suppress this drift. It is found that the phase modulation index’s drift would lead to a significant measurement error, which increases with rotation rate. It is proven that there exists an approximately linear correlation between phase modulation index and 2nd/4th harmonic. Using this correlation, the 2nd/4th harmonic feedback technique is applied to the open-loop RFOG to stabilize the phase modulation index. Although the phase modulation index slightly deviates from its optimal value in the dynamic state with this technique, it is proven that the induced backscatter noise could be neglected. The test results indicate that the phase modulation index’s drift with this technique is reduced to about 22% of that without suppression technique, and the stabilities of gyro output signal are respectively improved by about 29% and 31% under 5deg/s and 10deg/s when this technique is used. It is concluded that the 2nd/4th harmonic feedback technique does work in suppressing the phase modulation index’s drift.

Abstract:An optical fiber ring resonator (OFRR) is the key rotation-sensing element in the resonator fiber optic gyro (R-FOG). In comparing between different OFRR types, a simulation model that can apply to all cases is set up. Both the polarization crosstalk and polarization-dependent loss in the coupler are fully investigated for the first time to our knowledge. Three different splicing schemes, including a single 0 degrees, a single 90 degrees, and twin 90 degrees polarization axis rotated spices, are compared. Two general configurations of the OFRR are considered. One is a reflector OFRR, the other is a transmitter OFRR. This leads to six different OFRR types. The output stability of the R-FOG with six OFRR types is fully investigated theoretically and experimentally. Additional Kerr noise due to the polarization fluctuation is discovered. The OFRR with twin 90 degrees polarization axis rotated splices is of lower additional Kerr noise and hence has better temperature stability. As the coupler is polarization dependent, we notice that in a reflector OFRR, the straight-through component of the output lightwave, which can be isolated by a transmitter configuration, would produce large polarization fluctuation-induced noise. The experimental results show that the bias stability of the transmitter OFRR is 8 times improved over that of the reflector OFRR, which is in accord with the theoretical analysis. By the analysis and experiments above, it is reasonable to make a conclusion that an R-FOG based on a transmitter OFRR with twin 90 degrees polarization axis rotated splices is of better temperature stability and smaller additional Kerr effect noise. Abstract:Resonator micro optic gyro (RMOG) is a promising candidate for applications requiring small, light and robust gyros. In optical passive ring resonator gyros, clockwise and counter clockwise lightwaves are modulated at different frequencies to reduce the backscattering induced noise. The effectiveness of this technique, however, is determined by the carrier suppression level. Accurate modulation index and high environmental temperature stability is required for achieving high total carrier suppression for the traditional single phase modulation technique (SPMT). In this paper, we propose an RMOG based on the double phase modulation technique (DPMT). Compared with the traditional SPMT, two additional phase modulations are added to provide additional carrier suppression. It is found that the control accuracy of the modulation index and temperature stability is relaxed more than 30 times. It is easily performed for reducing the backscattering error below the shot noise limited sensitivity. The modulation parameters in the DPMT are analyzed and optimized. Based on the optimum parameters of the DPMT, a bias stability of 1.85 x 10(-4) rad/s is successfully demonstrated in the polarization maintaining silica waveguide resonator with the length of 7.9 cm. This is the best result reported to date, to the best of our knowledge, for a waveguide type passive ring resonator gyro. (C) 2011 Optical Society of America

Abstract:A fiber ring resonator (FRR) constructed using a Panda polarization-maintaining fiber does not effectively solve the problem of temperature-related polarization fluctuation, which considerably limits the detection accuracy of the resonant fiber optic gyro. The polarization-maintaining photonic crystal fiber (PM-PCF) can improve the thermal stability of the FRR. In this study, a structure that can simultaneously detect the polarization fluctuation of two FRRs is designed. We analyzed and verified the polarization phase shift errors of these two types of fibers, which are caused by the thermally induced birefringence changes. Theoretical simulation and experimental results confirm that a PM-PCF can be used to optimize the FRR, which can effectively suppress the polarization fluctuation.

Abstract:The photonic crystal fiber (PCF) with better thermal stability and polarization-maintaining performance is applied to the resonant fiber optic gyroscope (RFOG). A hybrid fiber ring resonator is fabricated using the conventional polarization-maintaining fiber (PMF) and PCF with close mode field diameters (MFDs) to reduce MFD-mismatch-induced splicing loss. Furthermore, the temperature-dependent birefringence coefficients of the PMF and the PCF are measured to differ almost four times in absolute value and be opposite in sign. The polarization stability of the hybrid PCF-PMF ring resonator is improved by a factor of 7 compared with the PMF ring resonator with the same length of PMF. The RFOG equipped with this hybrid PCF-PMF ring resonator achieves a bias stability of 1.67°/h.

Abstract:The resonant fiber optic gyro (RFOG) is a high accuracy inertial rotation sensor based on the Sagnac effect. The existence of various noises, including the nonreciprocal noises such as the polarization noise and the Kerr noise as well as the reciprocal circuit noise, limits the performance improvement of the RFOG. An improved scheme by inserting two in-line polarizers in the polarization maintaining fiber transmission-type resonator has been proposed to suppress the polarization-fluctuation induced drift. Furthermore, the adoption of the air-core photonic bandgap fibers (PBFs) offers a novel solution to reduce the optical Kerr effect. In addition, A digital signal processor is designed to reduce the reciprocal noises and detect the rotation information. A minimum actual rotation of 0.001°/s is achieved. The dynamic range is improved by a factor of 7 and the scale factor nonlinearity is decreased by a factor of 60.

Abstract:The resonator fiber optic gyro (R-FOG) ,which utilizes a resonance frequency change due to the Sagnac effect,is a promising candidate for the next generation inertial rotation sensor. In this study,an open-loop R-FOG is set up using phase modulation spectroscopy. First,the demodulation curve is obtained using a lock-in amplifier.From the demodulation signal,a gyro dynamic range of ± 4. 2rad/s is obtained. Then,using different phase modulation frequencies,the open-loop gyro output signal is measured when the gyro is rotated clockwise or counterclockwise. The bias drift as a function of time is also measured. The fluctuation of the output over 5s is about 0. 02rad/s. The drift can be reduced by taking countermeasures against system noise.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel method for detecting and tracking the half-wave voltage of the phase modulator in a resonant fiber-optic gyroscope (RFOG) is proposed and demonstrated. A theoretical model is first developed to illustrate the effect of phase modulator half-wave voltage fluctuations on the stability of the RFOG scale factor. A novel method for detecting the half-wave voltage fluctuations is then proposed by applying an additional sawtooth modulation signal. Based on this, a double closed-loop RFOG system scheme employing a half-wave voltage servo loop is designed to simultaneously eliminate the sawtooth wave reset voltage error during the RFOG operation. The performance of the RFOG was tested under variable temperature conditions. The experimental results indicated that the reset voltage errors could be controlled within 1 mV, and the scale factor thermal stability was improved from 95.97 ppm/°C to 9.39 ppm/°C.
