Abstract:Experiments for measuring gas diffusion through porous alumina ceramics are described. With the gas in scattering media absorption spectroscopy (GASMAS) technique, gaseous oxygen signals are measured continuously during the gas diffusion process. It is experimentally demonstrated that the time-dependence of the transient oxygen signal is described by an exponential curve. Abstract:In this work, by applying Materials Studio 2.2 software package, molecular dynamics (MD) was performed to investigate the dynamic processes of 1:4 acetone/nitrogen mixed gas permeating through different Al2O3 microporous membranes. Three systems were modeled by considering different box lengths, microporous sizes, and textures of Al2O3 membranes to compare different permeation behaviors. In each system, initial mixed gas contained 20 acetone molecules and 80 nitrogen molecules, and its density was set to 0.1 g/cm(3). Analysis on the concentration profiles of nitrogen molecules (N2) and acetone molecules (Ace) in each system at different sampling times was implemented to discuss the permeation behaviors of smaller N2 and larger Ace. The results showed that adsorption and diffusion occurred synchronously but adsorption was dominant for acetone molecules and that the adsorption on the floor surface of the feed gas region more easily reached equilibrium (local equilibrium) than the diffusion and the adsorption on the ceiling of the initially vacuum region. Furthermore, for nitrogen, adsorption followed diffusion. Higher temperature is in favor of the enrichment of acetone on the floor surface of the feed gas region but against the adsorption of nitrogen. The adsorptive layer was found to be a double-layer with COMPASS force field and to be a monolayer with PCFF force field.

Abstract:A new kind of sensor for gas test based on the method of light addressable potentiometric sensor(LAPS) and porous silicon technique is developed. Combined with the MicroElectro Mechanical System (MEMS) techniques for the LAPS fabrication and the characteristics of this kind of planar apparatus, a new way for the detection of gases released during the metabolism of cells is attainable. From some primary results, it is shown that, the sensor had relatively evident response to alcohol gas under the room temperature, along with some concentration gradient characteristics. The feasibility of the design of this kind of sensor is proved.

Abstract:Low-cost porous ceramic from fly ash with alumina as the pore-forming agent was produced. The effect of the alumina content on line shrink, bulk density, mechanical strength, porosity, and phase composition of porous ceramic were investigated in detail. The results showed that the addition of alumina can help to improve the porosity and then it can change the pore structure of porous ceramic. Meanwhile, the addition of alumina can react with SiO2 in fly ash which can form the mullite. With the increase of alumina content, the content of quartz decreased gradually, while the alumina and mullite increased. Furthermore, the pore size becomes uniform and the permeability increased gradually. After sintering at 1250 ℃ for 0.5 h, the porous ceramic has been obtained the bending strength of ≥ 35MPa and the porosity of ≥ 28% with the addition content of alumina (25 wt%).

Abstract:An Al2O3 xerogel with a distinctive microstructure is studied for the application of laser absorption spectroscopy of oxygen. The xerogel has an exceptionally high porosity (up to 88%) and a large pore size (up to 3.6 µm). Using the method of gas-in-scattering media absorption spectroscopy (GASMAS), a long optical path length (about 3.5m) and high enhancement factor (over 300 times) are achieved as the result of extremely strong multiple-scattering when the light is transmitted through the air-filled, hollow-sphere alumina xerogel. We investigate how the micro-physical feature influences the optical property. As part of the optical sensing system, the material's gas exchange dynamics are also experimentally studied.

Abstract:Abstract To meet growing electricity demand and greenhouse gas emission limitation in the future, it is urgency to improve existing power plant more efficientand less CO2 emission. Oxygen combustion instead of air combustion is quite good to raise up the fossil fuels efficiency. And separation oxygen from the air by ionic conductance at high temperatures is promising in large fuel power plants. Ionic separation processes by ceramic dense membrane need a good support porous membranes with good mechanical and permeable property. Present research reports the porous alumina with nanoporous structure was prepared by vacuum filtration and rapid sintering as a kind of porous support layer in the oxygen ceramic separation membrane. The microstructure of nanoporous alumina was analysed, the mechanical properties and gas permeability were tested and compared with some conventional pore-former method made porous ceramics. The uniform nanopores alumina ceramics with both high strength and high permeability achieved by a vacuum filtrate and rapid sintering method is a candidate as the porous support application in fuel cell and gas separation field.

Abstract:Porous alumina ceramics having unidirectionally aligned cylindrical pores were prepared by extrusion method and compared with porous ceramics having randomly distributed pores prepared by conventional method, and their gas permeability and mechanical properties were investigated. SEM micrographs of the porous alumina ceramics prepared by the extrusion method using nylon fibers as the pore former showed excellent orientation of cylindrical pores. The bending strength and Weibull modulus of the extruded porous alumina ceramics with 39% porosity were 156MPa and 17, respectively. These mechanical properties of extruded samples were higher than those of the conventional porous alumina ceramics. The strength decreased from 156 to 106MPa with increasing pore size from 8.5 to 38μm. The gas permeability of the extrusion samples is higher than that of the conventional samples and increased with increasing of porosity and pore size.

Abstract:Carbon membranes have been extensively applied in gas separation field, and the cost and performance of membranes strongly rely on the properties of the substrate material. In this study, effective nanoporous carbon membranes were prepared by pencil coating of the macroporous ceramics, followed by carbonization treatment of polyfurfuryl alcohol (PFA) coated on the pencil-modified ceramics substrates. The decoration of the macroporous ceramics substrates with pencil effectively repairs surface defects and decreases surface roughness, and greatly prevents PFA from penetrating into the ceramics substrates during pyrolysis. The as-prepared carbon membranes showed high gas permeability and permselectivity properties. This work provides an efficient method to fabricate nanoporous carbon membranes with enhanced gas separation performance.

Abstract:Gas permeability Of CO2, N-2 and He gases through a porous glass membrane of 3.5 nm pore diameter was investigated experimentally. Changes of the gas flow rate under Xe-lamp irradiation have been found. The observed phenomenon is explained by photothermal sorption. Estimation of gas permeability has been carried out. Experimental data of the induced gas permeability are in agreement with the theoretical estimation. A new method for gas separation by time modulation of the membrane temperature is proposed in which temperature modulation occurs by periodical heating of the membrane by the irradiation.

Abstract:Pores in ceramics have their peculiarity different from common porous materials, so the existing characterization methods should be re-recognized. In the present work, thermal shrinkage curves adequately characterize the dynamic process of porosity evolution in ceramics, and the results are checked by Archimedes method. In order to detect pore-size distribution quantitatively, gas adsorption (BET method), mercury penetration and a new Scanning Acoustic Microscope (SAM) technique are used on Alumina ceramics with large and median pores. The results acquired by these three methods are discussed in detail and unified by the introduction of effective pore-size coefficient t. It shows that a complete characterization system adapt to pores in ceramics should be established.

Abstract:In this paper, the influence of different microwave conditions on industrial waste residue was studied. It is hoped that the porous ceramic materials which can absorb SO2 and NOx in flue gas efficiently can be prepared by using these industrial waste residues. The results show that microwave treatment can effectively improve the activity of industrial waste residue and the adsorption capacity of flue gas. And the appropriate microwave sintering power and sintering time can improve the specific surface area and pore size of adsorbent, and enhance the adsorption capacity of flue gas. Under the experimental conditions, the best microwave sintering conditions are sintering power 1000 W and sintering time 1200 s. Under these conditions, the porous ceramic adsorbent has the best adsorption effect, with the desulfurization rate of 98.8% and the denitration rate of 91.9%.
Air permeable alumina-based porous ceramics with high performance prepared by novel gel casting route

Abstract:In the present work, porous ceramics with open pores were fabricated using the gel casting method, which utilizes carrageenan as a cross-linking agent. Beyond the foaming agents or templates techniques, this approach employed large-sized Al 2 O 3 particles (~ 45 μm) as the underlying framework material, enabling the direct formation of minute open pores within the green bodies and sintered samples. In order to finely adjust the pore structure and bolster flexural strength, micropowders of α-Al 2 O 3 and Kaolin were incorporated as filling materials, alongside the introduction of rare-earth oxides as sintering additives. The study diligently examined the impact of varying the content of sintering additives as well as the sintering temperatures on the characteristics of the porous ceramics. As a result, remarkable achievements were obtained, culminating in the production of Al 2 O 3 -based porous ceramics measuring 8 mm in thickness, exhibiting flexural strength exceeding 160 MPa, porosity surpassing 30%, and exceptional gas permeability of over 30 L/min/cm 2 under a pressure drop of 100 kPa.

Abstract:An experimental setup for the evaluation of permeation of gaseous species with the possibility of simultaneously collecting electrochemical impedance spectroscopy data in disk-shaped ceramic membranes was designed and assembled. It consists of an alumina sample holder with thermocouple tips and platinum electrodes located close to both sides of the sample. Water-cooled inlet and outlet gas connections allowed for the insertion of the sample chamber into a programmable split tubular furnace. Gas permeation through a ceramic membrane can be monitored with mass flow controllers, a mass spectrometer, and an electrochemical impedance analyzer. For testing and data validation, ceramic composite membranes were prepared with the infiltration of molten eutectic compositions of alkali salts (lithium, sodium, and potassium carbonates) into porous gadolinia-doped ceria. Values of the alkali salt melting points and the permeation rates of carbon dioxide, in agreement with reported data, were successfully collected.

Abstract:Diffusion and adsorption are the key to describe the behavior of gas pollutant species in engineered clay barrier. In this study, the diffusion and adsorption properties of multicomponent gases (C6H6/CH4/CO2) in montmorillonite interlayer were investigated at the molecular level based on molecular dynamics (MD) simulations considering the interaction among gases, water, and montmorillonite. Moisture content has great effect both on diffusion coefficient and adsorption properties of multicomponent gases. The diffusion coefficients firstly increase with increasing water content due to increasing interaction energy between gases and water. When moisture content reaches 10 % or more, the diffusion coefficients decrease slightly or remain unchanged because the interlayer is saturated with water. The interaction force between different gas species accelerates the diffusion of gases and indicates the phenomenon of cross diffusion, which should be considered when studying the transport of multicomponent gases. With moisture content increasing, adsorption capacity of water molecules on montmorillonite increases, while the adsorption capacity of C6H6/CH4/CO2 decreases. With increasing moisture content, H2O molecules first occupy the sorption sites near the surface of montmorillonite as the interaction energy between H2O and montmorillonite increases. Gases are sandwiched between water molecule layers when moisture content reaches 10 %. The results found in this study can be used to predict mutual diffusion coefficients of multicomponent gases and to explain the experimental results or engineering issues at molecular scale.

Abstract:Nanoporous adsorbent materials are a key part of many industrial processes, including the rapidly-expanding carbon capture industry. Development of advanced sorbents requires an assessment of the sorbent’s performance under mixed-gas conditions. Existing measurement techniques tend to be slow, material-intensive, and have limited ability to measure competitive mixed-gas sorption. We have developed a novel technique that measures thin films of sorbents deposited onto sensitive micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) transducers. This technique is fast, requires very little material, and enables real-time monitoring of binary gas sorption. We report measurements of CO2/H2O mixed-gas isotherms at three different temperatures on the carbon capture MOF CALF-20. The measured experimental data on CO2/H2O mixture adsorption in CALF-20 demonstrate the severe limitations of the Ideal Adsorbed Solution Theory (IAST) in providing a quantitative estimation of the component loadings. Departures from the IAST are quantified by introduction of activity coefficients and use of the Real Adsorbed Solution Theory (RAST).

Abstract:Ceramic membranes have received significant attention from both academia and industry, as they show the great potential in several important applications such as H 2 separation, recovery of CO 2 from natural gas and reduction of green-house gas emission from flue gas. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of peptizing agent concentration on morphology of unsupported alumina membranes that are suitable for gas separation. The unsupported alumina membranes were prepared by the sol-gel method using aluminum-tri-sec-butoxide as a precursor and acetic acid as a peptizing agent. The particle size distributions of produced boehmite sols, as measured by dynamic light scattering technique, range from 10 to 600 nm. The increase in the concentration of acetic acid results in formation of particles of smaller median diameter. The pore volume and size distribution of unsupported alumina membranes were characterized by the Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) method of adsorption of nitrogen gas. The pore size distributions of membranes were rather narrow in the range of 3 to 6 nm. The average diameter and volume of pores increase and the surface area decreases while the concentration of acetic acid increased.
Studies of adsorption and porosity properties of carbon-covered alumina surfaces

Abstract:The carbon-covered alumina (CCA) samples were prepared via the carbonization of sucrose highly dispersed on the alumina surface. Using special thermogravimetry and sorptometry methods physicochemical properties of carbon-covered alumina surfaces were investigated. A numerical and analytical procedure for the evaluation of total heterogeneous properties (desorption energy distribution and pore-size distribution functions) on the basis of liquid thermodesorption from the sample surfaces under the quasi-equilibrium conditions, are presented. The desorption energy distribution was derived from the mass loss Q-TG and the differential mass loss Q-DTG curves of thermodesorption of pre-adsorbed polar and apolar liquid films. For the first time, the evaluation of the fractal dimensions of carbon-covered alumina using the sorptometry, thermogravimetry and AFM data is presented.

Abstract:The strong scattering of light transported through nanoporous ceramic media can be used to form a miniature gas sensing absorption chamber by adopting the tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS). To explore the effect of the physical parameters of ceramics on the optical pathlength enhancement, TDLAS was utilized to measure the spectral absorption characteristics of oxygen inside the ceramics and to study the effect of the thickness and porosity of ceramics on the pathlength enhancement coefficient. The experimental results show that the pathlength enhancement coefficient is linearly correlated to thickness and exponentially correlated to porosity, which provides experimental explanation for the pathlength enhancement mechanism. In conclusion, the physical parameters of ceramics can be optimized to improve the pathlength enhancement coefficient and form a miniature gas cell suitable for in-situ TDLAS applications.

Abstract:In this paper, a gas permeability measurement technique in transitional flow regime was proposed, which could characterize the average pore diameter of nanoporous media non-destructively. With high purity argon and carbon dioxide, the conductance of three groups of porous anodic alumina was tested respectively in the transitional flow regime by the dynamic differential pressure attenuation test system, and the average pore diameter of porous anodic alumina was derived. The average pore diameters obtained through the gas permeability measurement technique are consistent with the SEM image analysis results, and the relative error is less than 8%. This method based on the improved transitional flow conductance theory extends the pore-size range of gas permeability measurement technique from micrometer to the nanometer scale, and does not require high pressure or high vacuum. It has the advantages of non-destruction, high-accuracy and large-area-measurement, which brings significant practical application value.
