Abstract:An optical fiber hydrogen sensor based on surface plasma resonance is presented, which is constructed by coating Pd-Ag alloy film on a side-polished multimode fiber. The optical transmission loss of the sensor depends on the hydrogen gas concentration and surface plasma resonance between the thin metal layer and the medium surface of hydrogen gas. An optimal design for Pd-Ag alloy film thickness has been pursued to obtain both high sensitivity and short response time. The theoretical analysis shows that Pd-Ag alloy film with thickness of 20 nm is good for detecting the hydrogen in range of 0%-4%. With the experiment of hydrogen detecting by using a sensing head with 20 nm Pd-Ag alloy and 15 mm interaction length, the results demonstrate that the accuracy, resolution and response time of this hydrogen sensor are 5%, 0.1% and 35 s respectively. This sensor structure can be applied to detecting the low concentration of hydrogen gas effectively.
