Abstract:A DC fault current limiter (DC FCL) in a voltage-source converter (VSC) DC grid is defined as a device which limits fault currents during the transients from fault initiation to DC circuit breaker (DCCB) current interruption. The so far proposed and studied DC FCLs have some inherent disadvantages, including but not restricted to: non-changing impedance, high on-line operating conduction loss, complex structure and unreliability, which constrain system performance. In this paper, a novel magnetic coupling FCL (MCFCL) is proposed with the firstly employed current-limiting principle in VSC DC grids. It has the pure metallic primary winding connected in series to a transmission line, magnetically coupled with the power electronic controlled variable passive load in the secondary side, achieving low conduction loss and fast-changing impedance respectively. Although the introduction of the power electronic circuitry in MCFCL increases the complexity and failure rate compared with the reactor type FCL, the magnetic coupling, by natural, can to some extent decrease the effect from the secondary side failure on the primary. The fundamentals and modelling of the MCFCL are demonstrated, followed by some analytical and numerical analyses showing its advantages over conventional reactor type FCLs.
