Abstract:Bainitic transformation exists in steels, non-ferrous alloys and some ceramics. Bainitic steel is now acting as beneficial engineering material. Point-of-views on mechanism of bainitic transformation given by different authors, displacists and diffusionists, on basis of morphology, kinetics or crystallography are critically reviewed. Theory concerning transformation in steel that the bainite formation begins with the decomposition of ferrite supersaturated with carbon has yet not been supported. Segregation of substitutional element at interface resulting in solute drag effect which may explain the phenomenon about incomplete transformation was observed by some experiments. The incomplete transformation resulting from shear mechanism, as shearist suggested, is not a universal phenomenon in bainite formation for steels. The tent-shaped relief occurs during bainite formation does not show the characteristics of invariant plain strain. Sometimes the phenomenological theory of martensite crystallography may be approximately applied to crystallography of bainite formation, however, it can no longer be used to ascertain whether the transformation is diffusional or displacive. Experiments on solute drag effect and interface structure by high resolution electron microscopy, study of thermodynamics, influences of magnetic and stress fields on bainite formation as well as some prebainitic phenomena do improve that the bainite formation occurs by means of diffusional mechanism. The present author defines the bainite as product of diffusional transformation usually with plate-shape, presenting tent-shaped relief on free surface during the formation. Perspective in further study on transformation mechanism and application of bainite is given.
