Abstract:The viewpoints about the formation mechanism of bainite are described as following aspects:(1) Ultra-fine structure of bainite in ferrous and nonferrous alloys is discovered by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). (2) STM studies discovered that the surface relief of bainite is substantially composed of groups of small relieves which correspond of ultra fine units, their surface relief is rent-shaped. (3) The popularity and mobility of 3-dimensional superledges in ferrous and nonferrous are proved by TEM and STM. (4) The bainite carbide nucleate in the gamma side of alpha/gamma interface and grow toward austenite. (5) STM studies on surface relief of grain boundary allotriomorph (GBA) and Widmanstatten ferrite (WF). They are tent-shaped. (6) The formation of bainite is through sympathetic nucleation-ledgewise growth mechanism. (7) 3-dimensional morphology of upper bainite transforms continuously to lower bainite.

Abstract:The main research results about the mechanism of bainite formation are described as follows: (1) Bainite in steel is of ultra-fine structure; (2) Surface relief of bainite is produced only by the deformation of the growing bainitic ferrite; furthermore, surface relief of a single smallest structural unit is tent-shaped rather than invariant-plane-strain-typed; (3) 3-dimensional superledges appear on the broad face of bainite ferrite and the austenite (335) plane of the structural units of bainitic sheaves is reasoned to be a diffusional interface, which indicates the growth of lower bainite by a diffusion process; (4) The bainite carbide nucleates in the gamma side of alpha/gamma interface and grows toward austenite; (5) Sympathetic nucleation-ledgewise growth model of bainite suggested on the base of the experiment data was proved by theoretical calculation.

Abstract:Based on the classic diffusion controlled nucleation and growth theory, the sympathetic nucleationledgewise growth mechanism of bainite was studied theoretically for Iow carbon Fe-C alloys. The rationality of the occurrence of sympathetic nucleation on the terraces of ledges competing with lateral ledge growth and other sites nucleation was demonstrated by the present work quantitatively. The calculations indicated that Iow reaction temperatures and high carbon concentrations may favor the sympathetic nucleation, thus accounting for the formation of multilayer structures of bainite.

Abstract:The subunits constituting a bainitic sheaf in an Fe-C-Cr-Si alloy were discovered by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) to consist of sub-subunits, and sub-subunits were also composed of sub-sub-subunits. Detailed investigation shows that a bainitic relief is composed of many smaller reliefs, which correspond to a different structure of bainite,i.e., subunits, sub-subunits, and sub-sub-subunits. It is determined by STM that the surface relief arising from the formation of bainite in an Fe-C-Cr alloy istent shaped rather than an invariant plane strain (IPS) type of surface relief. Careful observation shows that the relief obtained from a sub-sub-subunit is also tent shaped. It is discovered by STM that an α1 plate,i.e., bainite formed in Cu-Zn-Al alloys, is composed of subunits. This is also demonstrated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The preceding results indicate that bainitic plates in Cu-Zn-Al alloys and bainitic subunits in steels are not the smallest structural units. Based on the preceding results on the ultrafine structure and the nature of surface relief accompanying bainite, it is proposed that the bainitic structure forms through a sympathetic nucleation and ledgewise growth (SNLG) mechanism. This article shows that the SNLG mechanism can be successfully applied to interpret the complicated structure of bainite.

Abstract:By using three groups of experiment,it is shown that the lower bainitic carbides can nucleate in theγside ofα/γinterface or between two bainitic ferrite sub-units and grow towards austenite.Morphologically,the carbides can exist inside the a or pass across the interface ofα/γorα/α;The carbides grow competitively with the ferrite during the whole transformation process,and the carbides are precipitated from austenite side of theα/γ,interface,meanwhile the growing rate of ferrite is higher than that of carbides,as a result,the carbides are surrounded by ferrite,resulting in a false inpression that the lower bainitic carbides are precipitated from bainitic ferrite;The nucleation and growth model of lower bainitic carbides is proprosed on the basics of thermodynamics and the ledge-wise growth theory;It is suggested that the lower bainitic carbides precipitated from carbon- enriched retained austenite rather than supersaturated ferrite,which directly concerns the mechanism of bainitic transformation.

Abstract:Superledges on the broad faces of bainitic ferrite plates have been observed with transmission electron microscope (TEM). The observed superledges, ranging from less than 1 to 24 nm in height, are imaged in three dimension by way of tilt operation under TEM. Also, an array of smaller superledges are observed to pile up in front of a secondary phase. Pileup of superledges in front of a barrier is indicative of the mobility of an individual superledge. The precipitation of carbide associated with bainitic ferrite is also studied. It is observed that a carbide of a wedgelike shape may exist in front of a superledge with its tip(i.e., thinner end) penetrating the austenite and its root (the other end) originating at α:γ boundary. This condition indicates that the observed carbides may nucleate at the austenite side of α:γ phase boundary and grow toward austenite matrix.

Abstract:Bainitic transformation exists in steels, non-ferrous alloys and some ceramics. Bainitic steel is now acting as beneficial engineering material. Point-of-views on mechanism of bainitic transformation given by different authors, displacists and diffusionists, on basis of morphology, kinetics or crystallography are critically reviewed. Theory concerning transformation in steel that the bainite formation begins with the decomposition of ferrite supersaturated with carbon has yet not been supported. Segregation of substitutional element at interface resulting in solute drag effect which may explain the phenomenon about incomplete transformation was observed by some experiments. The incomplete transformation resulting from shear mechanism, as shearist suggested, is not a universal phenomenon in bainite formation for steels. The tent-shaped relief occurs during bainite formation does not show the characteristics of invariant plain strain. Sometimes the phenomenological theory of martensite crystallography may be approximately applied to crystallography of bainite formation, however, it can no longer be used to ascertain whether the transformation is diffusional or displacive. Experiments on solute drag effect and interface structure by high resolution electron microscopy, study of thermodynamics, influences of magnetic and stress fields on bainite formation as well as some prebainitic phenomena do improve that the bainite formation occurs by means of diffusional mechanism. The present author defines the bainite as product of diffusional transformation usually with plate-shape, presenting tent-shaped relief on free surface during the formation. Perspective in further study on transformation mechanism and application of bainite is given.

Abstract:The fine structure of bainite (α1 plate) in a Cu–25.9 wt% Zn–4.0 wt% Al–0.1 wt% Re alloy has been studied by scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The experimental results demonstrated that bainite plates are composed of subplates, and the subplates are composed of subunits. STM investigation shows that the surface relief with a bainite plate is composed of groups of small reliefs which correspond to subplates and subunits. The relief arising from the formation of bainite is tent like, which is different from that with martensite. Ledges exist on the broad faces of the subunit, indicating that it grows by a ledgewise mechanism. Three types of nucleation of the subunits were observed under TEM: face to face, edge to edge and edge to face. Based on the experimental results concerning the ultrafine structure and surface relief accompanying bainite, the sympathetic nucleation–ledgewise growth mechanism of bainite is proposed.

Abstract:Fine-scale bainitic microstructure with excellent mechanical properties has been achieved by transforming austenite to bainite at low temperature ranging from 200oC to 300oC. Microstructural observations and hardness measurements show that transformed microstructures consist of bainitic ferrite and carbon-enriched retained austenite. The thickness of bainitic ferrite plates is less than 50 nm. The hardness reaches approximately 640 HV1. Strong austenite and/or large driving force at the low transformation temperature leads to ultra fine bainitic ferrite plates. X-ray diffraction analysis indicates that low-temperature bainite transformation is an incomplete reaction. The carbon content in carbon-enriched retained austenite is below the para-equilibrium (Ae3′) phase boundary predicted. The carbon content in bainitic ferrite is less than that T0′ phase boundary predicted.

Abstract:The surface reliefs accompanying lower bainite transformation in steels have been studied by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). With the exclusive vertical resolution of STM, we observed that the surface relief associated with bainite is a group of surface reliefs related to subplates, subunits and sub-subunits. From the bainite plate to the sub-subunit in it, the reliefs are in a tent shape, not of invariant plane strain (IPS) type. The fine structure of bainite in a steel has also been shown by STM and TEM that bainite plate is composed of subplates, subunits and subsubunits. On the basis of the fine structure inside a bainitic ferrite plate observed under STM, sympathetic-ledgewise mechanism of bainite formation is proposed.

Abstract:Bainite transformation is a kinetic process that involves complex solid diffusion and phase structure evolution. This research systematically studies the bainite transformation of austempered 4140 steel in a wide range of isothermal temperatures, in which four bainite phases structures were generated: upper bainite; mixed upper bainite and lower bainite; lower bainite and mixed lower bainite and martensite. The kinetics of bainite transformation has been described with a linear trend using an Avrami n-value. It was found that the bainitic ferrite sheaves grow with widthwise preference. The sheaves are stable when half-grown and are variable in length, due to austenite size limit or soft/hard impingement, or autocatalytic nucleation, or these conditions combined. The full-grown upper/lower bainite sheaves were found to be 1.9 μm/1.2 μm in width under the conditions of this study. Each individual bainite sheave is lath-like instead of wedge-like. The upper bainite sheaves mostly appear as broad-short-coarse lath, while the lower bainite sheaves appear as narrow-long-fine lath. The overall bainite transformation activation energy ranges from 50–167 kJ/mol.

Abstract:The platelike bainitic ferrite growth rates were calculated by two modified diffusional models. Good agreements between experimental and theoretical results are found in Fe-0.59C wt.%, Fe-0.81C wt.% and Fe-0.478C-4.87Ni wt.% alloys. A slowing down effect due to the alloying element Mo is emphasized in Fe-0.69C-1.8Ni-0.8Mo wt.% alloy. However, the experimental data are lower than theoretical ones about two orders in Fe-C-8.7Ni wt.% alloys. According to the discussion of the results, it is suggested that the bainite transformation mechanism may relates to steel composition and transformation temperature.

Abstract:An evaluation method for bainite transformation kinetics was established by theoretical derivation, dilatometric curve analysis, and microstructure observation. The isothermal transformation of ultra-fine bainite under different austenitizing temperatures and contents of prior martensite was studied using a DIL805L dilatometer. The kinetic parameters (activation energy Q*, autocatalytic factor λ, temperature rate constant κ, unit volume transformation rate, and the number density of nucleation sites Ni) of ultra-fine bainite transformation under different austenitizing temperatures and contents of prior martensite were calculated based on the displacement growth bainite dynamics model. It was found that the autocatalytic factor λ is linear with the austenite grain size d, and the number density of nucleation sites Ni is closely related to the average volume of the bainite subunit Vb. Moreover, the formation of prior martensite and its increase can increase the number of nucleation sites and the nucleation rate of the ultra-fine bainite; thus, the ultra-fine bainite transformation can be accelerated.

Abstract:This study investigates the bainitic transformation kinetics of carbide-free bainitic steel with Si + Al and carbide-bearing bainitic steel without Si + Al, as well as the phase transformation and microstructure through in situ high-temperature laser scanning confocal microscopy. Results show that bainitic ferrite plates preferentially nucleate at the grain boundary. New plates nucleate on previously formed ones, including two dimensions which appear on a plane where a three-dimensional space of bainitic ferrite forms. Nucleation on the formed bainitic ferrite is faster than that at the grain boundary in some grains. The bainitic ferrite growth at the austenite grain boundary is longer and has a faster transformation rate. The bainitic ferrite growth on the formed bainitic ferrite plate is shorter and has a slower transformation rate. The location and number of nucleation sites influence the thickness of the bainitic ferrite. The higher the number of plates preferentially nucleating at the original austenite grain boundary, the greater the thickness of the bainitic ferrite.

Abstract:To reveal the effects of large amounts of ferrite on bainite transformation behavior, the morphological and orientation relationship between ferrite (alpha) and austenite (gamma) reversed from different initial microstructures during intercritical annealing, as well as their effects on subsequent bainite transformation, were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, electron-backscattered diffraction, and dilatometry analysis. The austenite and ferrite reversed from quenched martensite exhibited an alternately arranged lamellar structure. The austenite maintained a Kurdjumov-Sachs (K-S) orientation relationship with ferrite. In the subsequent austempering, bainitic transformation exhibited a strong variant selection phenomenon. Austenite reversed from cold-deformed martensite was dispersed around ferrite, and the orientation relationship between austenite and ferrite was irrational. During austempering, the bainite nucleation rate at K-S-oriented alpha/gamma interfaces was much higher than that at irrational-oriented alpha/gamma interfaces. First, the alternately arranged ferrite and austenite lamellae increased the total length of alpha/gamma interfaces per unit area, i.e., alpha/gamma interfacial density, for bainite nucleation. Second, the activation energy for bainite nucleation at the K-S-oriented alpha/gamma interface was lower. The K-S-oriented alpha/gamma interfaces facilitated bainite nucleation accompanied by strong variant selection, thereby accelerating the kinetics of bainite transformation.
Ledge structure of bainites in Cu-Zn-Al alloys

Abstract:In order to investigate the bainitic transformation mechanism in Cu-base alloys, the fine structure of bainites in three kinds of Cu-ZN-Al alloys was studied with transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Three-dimensional ledges were observed on the broad faces and at the tip of bainitic plates, which proves the real existence of the ledges. The height of the ledges ranged from nearly 2nm to about 100nm. Kink and small ledges at a nanometer scale on the riser of a superledge were found for the first time. The experimental results show that the bainitic transformation in Cu-Zn-Al alloys occurs by a diffusion-controlled ledgewise mechanism.

Abstract:In this paper the authors present their two findings: (1) Mechanism underlying the mixed-product zone. The authors' theoretical analysis indicates that the transformation of any phase product follows its own peculiar C-curve and that, when two C-curves intersect, mixed product zone appears. In the experimentally determined TTT diagram of Cu-Zn (26.84wt.%)-Al(4.22wt.%) alloy, the C-curves of the bainite ��1 (plate-like, 9R structure) and the equilibrium phase �� (rod-like, fcc structure) intersect at the bay temperature. Fig.3 of this paper is clearly different from the corresponding TTT diagram given in literature in that the lower C-curves corresponding to ��1 does not show a cutoff at the temperature (bay) of the intersecting point of the two C-curves, i.e. the transition temperature, B varies with transformation time even at a temperature higher than the bay temperature. Therefore, the existence of the mixed product zone is inevitable in the process of bainitic transformation. (2) Definition of stage of pure bainitic transformation. From the explanation just explained in (1), it naturally follows that the needed definition is: pure bainitic transformation for Cu-Zn (26.84wt%)-Al(4.22wt%) alloy occurs only when the point representing temperature and time falls within a certain area.

Abstract:A calculation based on classic diffusion controlled nucleation and ledgewise growth theory is conducted in this study to analyze the sympathetic nucleation at growth ledge terraces of the bainitic ferrite plate in steel. The competition between sympathetic nucleation and the ledgewise growth is investigated quantitatively. The rationality of sympathetic nucleation on the ledge terraces of a previous bainitic ferrite in competition with lateral growth of ledge risers is demonstrated in this work. Low reaction temperature and high carbon concentration promote sympathetic nucleation more than growth of ledge risers. Due to increasing sympathetic nucleation, a bainitic ferrite with ultra-fine inner structures (that is the case for lower bainite) is preferred at low temperatures and high carbon alloys. On the contrary, high reaction temperature and low bulk carbon concentration lead to the formation of the bainitic ferrite with less inner structures (that is the case for upper bainite).
Real-time Observation of Bainite Formation at Heterogeneous Phases in a High-Strength Weathering Steel

Abstract:Due to the excellent comprehensive mechanical properties and toughness of bainite steels, bainite is regarded as a most desirable microstructure for the new generation of high-strength weathering steels. The formation of bainite was observed in real time in a high-strength weathering steel, and the results showed that bainite laths show impingement during phase transformation. The preferred regions of nucleation sites were identified, and the growth rate of bainite was measured. The growth mechanism of bainite was demonstrated to exhibit growth rate contributions from both the diffusion mechanism and the shear mechanism. Subsequently, the heterogeneous phases that form preferred sites for bainite nucleation were quantitatively identified by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS), and calculation of phase diagram (CALPHAD). The austenite grain sizes increase with increasing austenite temperature, which leads to longer bainite laths. The influence of a small lattice disregistry between the heterogeneous phases and bainite on the bainite nucleation was studied. The disregistries between the favorable heterogeneous phases of VN, VC, TiN, or TiC and the α-Fe in bainite are 2.9, 3.1, 3.9, and 4.6%, respectively. Therefore, VN, VC, TiN, and TiC can act as highly effective nuclei for bainite during the bainite transformation.
