Abstract:An efficient method for the synthesis of substituted quinolines is described. By FeCl3-promoted C–C bond formation, 2,3-disubstituted and 2,3,4-trisubstituted quinolines were successfully synthesized from the reaction between imines and electron-deficient alkynes in good yields. The reaction can also be performed in a sequential three-component manner by using aromatic amines and aromatic aldehydes instead of the corresponding imines.

Abstract:A one-pot synthesis of quinolines via molecular iodine-catalyzed and air-mediated tandem condensation/imino-Diels–Alder/isomerization/oxidation of simple readily available amines, aldehydes, and alkynes has been developed. This methodology was extended to synthesize quinazolines from two molecules of amines and two molecules of glyoxalates.

Abstract:A highly efficient method for the synthesis of 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoline derivatives via a molecular iodine catalyzed domino reaction of anilines with cyclic enol ethers, such as 2,3-dihydrofuran and 3,4-dihydro-2H-pyran, is described. The reaction may proceed through an aza-Diels–Alder process between an in situ generated 2-azadiene and another equivalent of cyclic enol.

Abstract:Iodine was found to be an efficient catalyst for the imino Diels-Alder reaction of N-arylimine with enol ethers to provide tetrahydroquinolines in good yields. The influence of the loading of iodine, reaction solvent, the structure of imine and enol ethers was studied. One pot synthesis of tetrahydroquinolines from aldehyde, aniline and enol ethers catalyzed by iodine was also applicable and provided tetrahydroquinolines in comparable yields. Mild reaction conditions, facile experimental procedure, low price of iodine and good yield of products render this new method attractive for practical synthesis of many tetrahydroquinoline derivatives.

Abstract:Highly substituted 3-iodoquinolines bearing different alkyl and aryl moieties can be synthesized in moderate to excellent yields (up to 99%) by 6-endo-dig iodocyclization of 2-tosylaminophenylprop-1-yn-3-ols with molecular iodine (I-2) under mild conditions. The cyclization is highly regioselective and the resulting 3-iodoquinolines can be further functionalized by various coupling reactions.

Abstract:The NaIO4-mediated sequential iodination/amidation reaction of N-alkyl quinolinium iodide salts has been first developed. This cascade process provides an efficient way to rapidly synthesize 3-iodo-N-alkyl quinolinones with high regioselectivity and good functional group tolerance. This protocol was also amenable to the isoquinolinium salts, thus providing a complementary method for preparing the 4-iodo-N-alkyl isoquinolinones.

Abstract:A method for efficient synthesis of quinolines via acceptorless dehydrogenative condensation is presented. A series of quinolines are obtained by the coupling reaction of substituted aminobenzyl alcohols with various secondary alcohols in the presence of bidentate terpyridine Mn(I) complex in good to excellent yields. Importantly, this investigation also provides a green and environmentally friendly protocol for constructing heterocyclic compounds. A method for efficient synthesis of quinolines via acceptorless dehydrogenative condensation is presented.
