Abstract:The number of electronic devices connected to the power grid through power electronic interfaces, such as inverters or switch power supplies, has increased in recent years. The harmonics generated by power electronic interfaces cannot be avoided. However, existing load models are mainly used for transient electromechanical simulation and only describe the fundamental positive-sequence characteristics of loads without considering harmonics. For in-depth research on distribution networks or microgrids, the harmonic characteristics of loads need to be considered. This paper suggests a simplified power electronic interfaced load model that considers harmonics. The model consists of two parts, one of which characterizes the dynamics of the fundamental current considering the change in fundamental voltage, whereupon the load parameters are determined by analyzing the load's dynamic response to voltage variations. The other part generates output currents containing harmonics based on the effective value and initial phase relationships between the harmonics and fundamental wave obtained from the analysis of steady-state data. An experiment on an inverter air conditioner validates the applicability of the proposed model.

Abstract:It is urgent for modern society to save energy and protect environment. But the efficiency of traditional lighting equipment which occupies a rather high proportion of total electric load is very low. Now, they are more and more instead by power electronics based devices, such as energy-saving lamps or LED lamps. For the different characteristics from that of traditional devices, the new kind of lighting equipment may have uncertain influence to power grid. Firstly, their topologies and control schemes are studied and analyzed. Then, the general models, which are suitable for simulation analysis, are proposed. After that, the simulation study and physical experiment are carried on respectively. It is revealed and manifested that the characteristics of both energy-saving lamp and LED lamp are quite different from that of traditional lamps, and may have adverse impact on the safety and stability of power grid.

Abstract:Based on harmonic detecting and analysis of power distribution system of petrochemical enterprise,it shows that the main sources in the power distribution system of petrochemical enterprise are frequency converter,UPS and HID.Multiple technique,LC filter and active filter strategy were proposed to reduce harmonic component.Based on analysis of the relation between capacitor and harmonic component,the improved strategy of selecting resonant frequency of LC filter in the power distribution system of petrochemical enterprise was proposed.

Abstract:Harmonic pollution is one of the problems of power quality.Considering the point of common coupling(PCC),harmonicsources can exist in both the utility side and the custom side.And the study about harmonic management mostly focuses on thelocalization of harmonic source.This paper derives the condition in which the contributions of custom harmonic sources decrease theharmonic level at PCC.And it testifies the distortion could be worse after the custom harmonic source is eliminated,even if thecustom side is judged as the main pollution source.The definition of strengthening/weakening harmonic source is proposed on thestudy of both voltage and current distortion.An index is suggested to determine whether the custom harmonic sources weaken theharmonic pollution.The result performes on an IEEE industrial test system is reported.The concept and method proposed in thispaper reinforces the harmonic source localization principle.

Abstract:Harmonic pollutions in residential distribution system has become an emerging concern for utility companies. It is however difficult for the utility to have a systematic understanding on the severity of the distortion due to the lack of monitoring infrastructure. To address this issue, this paper proposes a practical solution to estimate harmonic distortions in residential distribution systems. The measurement is first taken at several representative service transformers and a unified harmonic model is developed for the secondary residential system. Then a probabilistic harmonic load flow algorithm is proposed with the network model provided by the utility. Importantly, the available harmonic measurements are considered, which significantly reduce the uncertainty of the estimation. Finally, the proposed method is verified using a real three-phase four-wire residential system in North America. Practical issues are also discussed to show the robustness and limitations of the proposed method.

Abstract:The modern power grid has seen a rise in the integration of non-linear loads, presenting a significant concern for operators. These loads introduce unwanted harmonics, leading to potential issues such as overheating and improper functioning of circuit breakers. In pursuing a more sustainable grid, the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) and photovoltaic (PV) systems in residential networks has increased. Understanding and examining the effects of high-order harmonic frequencies beyond $1.5$ kHz is crucial to understanding their impact on the operation and planning of electrical distribution systems under varying nonlinear loading conditions. This study investigates a diverse set of critical power electronic loads within a household modeled using PSCAD/EMTdc, analyzing their unique harmonic spectra. This information is utilized to run the time-series harmonic analysis program in OpenDSS on a modified IEEE 34 bus test system model. The impact of high-order harmonics is quantified using metrics that evaluate total harmonic distortion (THD), transformer harmonic-driven eddy current loss component, and propagation of harmonics from the source to the substation transformer.

Abstract:According to the development trend of power network in China, it is pointed out that the development of UHV AC transmission is not only an effictive approach to meet the growing demand of electric power, but also the requirement of improving power network structure and promoting the nation-wide power grid interconnection. Detailed discussion is then presented on several controversial problems existing in the UHV AC transmission field, including: knowledge about insulation characteristics of gas interval, selection of an appropriate voltage level, effective prevention measures for abnormal lightning trip-out percentage, application of composite insulators in the prevention of dirty flashover, control of environmental influence caused by UHV transmission lines and substations, superiority of UHV in economy and relationship between UHV AC transmission and DC transmission. In the construction of domestic UHV AC transmission, the actual condition of UHV AC transmission engineering in China should be considered, and on the basis of using the research results of former USSR (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics), Japan and United States for reference, and more attention should be paid to the research on UHV transmission technology and the development of related equipments.

Abstract:This paper deduces a mathematic model of grid side converter(GSC) to quantitatively analyze the harmonic currents caused by two factors, i.e., grid background harmonic voltages and dead time effect. The impedance of GSC respectively corresponding to these two factors is built and the harmonic currents can be precisely calculated. The model also explains the coupling phenomenon of two kinds of harmonic currents and the generation mechanism of the phenomenon. Finally, the comparison of simulation results and calculation results validates the effectiveness of the model.

Abstract:The growing number of power electronic equipment in power system making harmonic a more complicated problem. The harmonic amplification phenomenon through power system components will decrease power quality, damage equipment. Therefore, this paper proposes a harmonic transfer function to analyse harmonic amplification phenomenon on long-distance underloaded line, to improve the power quality. Firstly, the harmonic transfer model of long-distance light-load transmission line is established, and the harmonic transfer characteristics and amplification mechanism in long-distance light-load line are analyzed by harmonic transfer function. Secondly, according to the actual situation, the distribution network structure is built based on Matlab plarform, and the accuracy of the wave transfer coefficient is proved through theoretical and simulation analysis.

Abstract:Harmonic in power systems would not only reduce the work efficiency of a distribution network and electrical equipments so as to cause faults, shorten service life of the network, but also increase the system loss, reduce the power factor and efficiency of electric consumption utilization, and cause greater economic loss. In this paper, through the analysis of generation mechanism of harmonic in power systems, and the effect of harmonic on a variety of electrical components, found that harmonic suppression has a certain energy-saving efficiency theoretically, finally, verified through an example when cost used for harmonic suppression is lower than electric fee saved, eliminating harmonics would improve the power quality, and at the same time obtain certain economic benefits.

Abstract:It is essential to protect control, regulation and data storage units used in automated robotic manufacturing from the consequences of harmful electrical grid harmonics. In this paper, the effectiveness of active/passive harmonic filters built into LED lamps, test benches, and industrial robots was investigated (in the latter two cases, light and heavy load states were applied). Based on network analysis, it was found that the built-in passive harmonic filters of the luminaries were ineffective because the THD of the current was approximately two or three times the permissible value according to the IEEE 519-2022 standard. It was proved that the built-in active harmonic filter of the test bench at a heavy load worked properly, but at a light load it was not effective, while the magnitude of harmonic distortion of the industrial robot exceeded the allowed level (three times the limit at a light load, seven times the limit at a heavy load). Further measurements were also performed at three locations: an engineering room, a gearbox house machine tool, and an office room (where there were no built-in filters). The results proved that in each case, there was a significant exceedance of the limit value. Therefore, protection against harmonics needs to be installed, and then the measurements must be repeated.

Abstract:This paper proposes a method to determine harmonic pollution of consumers connected to single-phase low voltage distribution system. Today, the power quality of the system is greatly affected due to the penetration of nonlinear loads. As per the IEEE standard 519-2014, both utility and consumers are responsible for reducing the harmonic pollution. This necessitates the quantification of harmonic contribution of individual consumers. The proposed method defines harmonic distortion indices for current and voltage separating consumer harmonic contribution at the point of common coupling (PCC). These indices are used to determine non-fundamental apparent power associated with each consumer connected to the PCC. Simulation results point to the effectiveness of this method in separating the harmonic contribution of consumer and utility. Experimental investigations are also carried out with several linear and nonlinear loads comparing the performance of the method with the power definitions mentioned in IEEE standard 1459–2010.

Abstract:The use of large number of complex and non-linear power electronic equipment in DC distribution networks will inevitably bring a series of harmonic problems to the system. One of which is called harmonic instability, which is caused by resonance in the DC system. In this paper, the basic topology of DC distribution network and the reasons for harmonic instability is analyzed, then, based on the switch function theory, the calculation formula of the DC side harmonic impedance of MMC, which is the core equipment of DC distribution network, is derived. Finally, taking a typical flexible DC power distribution demonstration project as an example, the DC side harmonic impedance of MMC is analyzed and the analysis results are verified by PSCAD simulation. Verification results show that, the calculation model can accurately calculate the harmonic impedance of the DC distribution network, which is of reference value for managing harmonic content and avoiding harmonic instability.

Abstract:Based on the analysis on the CCFL(Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp) characteristic, the paper described the principle of CCFL driving circuit and the way how to design circuit and choose the parameters in the circuit to meet the predefined operating frequency and output voltage. Drived by the PWM(Pulse Width Modulating) mode, the circuit appeared to be the feature of damping harmonic circuit. The dynamic characters at start and end term are the key factors for dimming the lamps. Those mentioned above are theoretically analyzed while experiment data are given in this paper. In order to avoid the flicker phenomena of the display in lower brightness, the frequency of PWM must be more rapid, generally, about 5-7 times than the frame frequency of the display(such as 30Hz for PAL input signal). The minimal turn on/off delay time of the circuit must short than 26 nano-seconds. Both the calculational and measured curves illustrated that the turn off delay of the damping harmonic output is about ten times longer than turn on delay. So reducing the turn off delay time of the circuit driven in PWM is the linchpin of the technology program for dimming the CCFL with large scale.

Abstract:The alternating current arc furnace is an unbalanced,nonlinear and time-variant load that produces higher-order harmonics during the steel-making process.The harmonics affect the quality of electric energy in public supply network.Harmonic analysis on arc furnace electrical system is beneficial to adopt the good measure to restrain the harmonics.This paper builds the simulation model of alternating current arc furnace on the basis of the mathematical model of arc resistance by making use of power system blockset and fundamental blockset of MATLAB 6.5/Simulink.By making simulation the results of harmonics analysis on arc furnace system show that 2nd to 7th-order are the main harmonic components in harmonic current of arc furnace.The results are about the same with that measured by a harmonic analyzer.

Abstract:This article deals with problems related to electromagnetic compatibility, which is a very important issue due to the fact of ensuring the proper coexistence of devices and systems in a given electromagnetic environment. The devices manufactured today can, on the one hand, be a source of electromagnetic disturbance emissions and, on the other hand, be susceptible to disturbance signals from the environment. A large group of receivers in which electronic specialised circuits are used are LED lamps. The operation of an RGB LED lamp due to higher harmonic current emissions has been analysed in this paper. Lamp tests were carried out in several stages. In each of them, the values of the generated higher harmonics were analysed and related to the parameters of the current flowing through the lamp. It was shown how the parameters of the current pulse affect the generated harmonics when the value of the luminous flux was changed, its colour was changed, or the built-in function was turned on. It is also shown how, for example, changing the value of an electronic component in the lamp's power supply changes the parameters of the current and thus the value of the generated higher harmonics.
