Abstract:This paper introduces the experiments,design and engineering application of modern bamboo single family house.The features of foundation,wall,floor,and roof are discussed in detail.The design and construction of the bamboo house is based on the properties of laminated bamboo,including high strength-light-weight and stiffness-weight ratios,prefabrication,better durability etc.Crucial technics including fire proof,moisture prevention,and anti-seismic design etc were solved.The research and construction of bamboo single family houses validate that such a new type of environmental friendly construction form is suitable for applications in commercial buildings and residential houses.

Abstract:Wooden architecture sites are important archaeological objects in southern China. Existing archaeological studies generally believe that the settlement architecture of the Hemudu period is single-story pile-dwelling. Because of its unique geological conditions, a large number of well-preserved wooden pillars have been unearthed in the Tianluoshan site, Zhejiang province, China. Based on the huge settlement founded under wooden pillars at this site, the historical load on the wooden pillar was calculated in reverse according to the calculation method of foundation settlement. Then the tribal architectural form at that time can be inferred according to the layout map of the wooden pillar at the Tianluoshan site. The results show that the Hemudu culture could build multistory buildings already, which presumed to be sacrificial buildings.

Abstract:There is an urgent requisite on the preservation of Chinese ancient architectures, since environmental and time impacts have been abating their structural resistance capability. In order to provide the basic characteristics of the timber structures as fundamental information for preservation, on-site measurements and model tests were conducted on the front tower over Xi'an City Wall. Many valuable data and information were obtained, such as the vibration modes of the structure. In this paper, the experimental results are discussed in detail. In the forthcoming, companion paper, numerical analysis will be conducted.

Abstract:Through an examination of existing ancient timber construction, the ancient architectural text Yingzao fashi and indirectly related historical documents, the author reveals the various types of systems of wall support arches used in China in the period from the 7th to the 14th centuries, as well as their regional and temporal characteristics. The author then proceeds to examine the characteristics of architecture in speci?c parts of northern and southern China in this period, as well as the relationship between the speci?cally regional elements in Yingzao fashi and their dissemination. The author further suggests than the study and appreciation of the details of place and time in the forms of ancient Chinese architecture possibly provide the foundations for studying the ancient architectural history of all of north-eastern Asia.

Abstract:Strong tradition of Chinese wooden structurehas been noticed by architectural academia fordecades, while many existing interpretations werebased upon stylistic architecture theory, so that thescientific and tectonic issue of this tradition has notbeen expressed well. In order to change this situation,we shall turn the academic orientation to the tectonicapproach. We made the basic process of woodentectonic from the recognition of wood as theconstruction material, and construction as connectingthe wood pieces then to the basic structure unit. Thedevelopment of the basic structure unit can be as theapplication case. How to make the span and height inChinese wooden structure tradition becomes ourselection in wooden tectonic studies. After thecollection of information and inventory in the site, wemade clear focus for our studies on two questions: Thefirst is to explain how to build the wooden constructionas the special wooden tectonic form; the second is totry to explain how it is developed from.

Abstract:Ancient architecture carries Chinese culture, which is helpful to understand the tradition. Timber structure is the main structure of ancient Chinese buildings, and most of the ancient timber structures have been overserved and have been damaged to varying degrees. Although timber structure is made of convenient materials, its low strength and vulnerability to corrosion increase the difficulty of the protection of ancient buildings, so the restoration of ancient buildings is imminent. Through literature research, this paper summarized the repair principles and reinforcement methods, and analyzed the effective methods and research progress of the repair and reinforcement of ancient timber structures from the traditional and modern aspects, and provided reference for the repair work of ancient timber structures.

Abstract:Archaeological discoveries have enriched our understanding of the tectonic traditions that underlie the evolution of ancient building technologies. In ancient China, the natural environment, in particular local climate and abundant building materials, along with the development of agricultural tools, shaped the unique local architectural types referred to as Jinggan, earth constructions that originated in the north of China, and Ganlan and Chuandou that originated in the south. This paper discusses the origin and evolution of each building type, as well as the process of merging the wood-based frames developed in the south of China with the earth-and-wood frames developed in the north. This new integration enabled an advanced jointing technology connecting wood columns and beams, and resulted in the wooden structural Tailiang method for the synthesis of framed and piled-up structures. We therefore argue that, on the basis of examples of such fusion in China as well as in other east Asian countries, integration was established via a strong vernacular foundation building on architectural tectonic recognition that helps us understand ancient Asian architecture.

Abstract:As an important part of the civilization in China, ancient Chinese architecture has an indigenous and unique system of construction that has retained its principal characteristics from prehistoric times to the present and spread its influence to other countries such as Korea and Japan. With the exacerbating environmental encroachment and time impacts that have been reducing their structural resistance, it has become imperative to preserve this architectural heritage. To provide the basic characteristics of the timber structures as fundamental information for research and preservation, on-site measurements and model tests were conducted on the front tower over the North Gate of the Xi' an City Wall. In the full-scale on-site tests, the vibration modes of the tower were measured. The first four natural frequencies of the structure were found to be 1.10, 1.70, 2.73, and 3.10 Hz, respectively. Multipoint excitation tests on wooden and polymethyl methacrylate (Perspex) models validate that the first and second modes obtained by the on-site full-scale test are the vibration modes of the tower. Many other valuable data and information were obtained through the tests, such as the damping ratio and the hysteresis curves.

Abstract:Yiqian town is a famous historical and cultural town in China, with rich heritage of traditional architecture and diversified architectural forms, which shows the great achievements of Gan style architecture in technology and art. Based on the field survey and mapping of traditional buildings in Yiqian, this paper sorts out the performance of plane shape and structure characteristics in different building types, and analyzed the correlation of the above three. Finally, Abaqus software was used for mechanical analysis and Ecotect software was used for light and wind analysis. It is concluded that in Yiqian, the plane mode is highly applicable, the wooden frame processing technology is flexible, and the architectural form is suitable to the climate environment, which reveals the wisdom of the ancient craftsmen in building construction.

Abstract:Due to its special geographical conditions, Guangdong has absorbed the essence of the Central Plains Han culture and characteristics of foreign cultures, resulting in architecture in which traditional buildings exhibit unique regional cultural connotations. The architectural design is adapted to the needs of nature and ecology and the arts and humanities. This paper investigates the technical process of using local materials to obtain structural materials. Traditional Guangdong buildings use patios, cold alleys and doors as well as windows in a comprehensive manner to create an energy-saving and environmentally friendly ventilation design, which was analyzed here. In addition, we study the floor plans and artistic characteristics of traditional buildings in different regions of Guangdong. Traditional Guangdong buildings realize the harmonious coexistence of humans and nature, as well as embody the concept of sustainable development. Traditional buildings integrate benefits and efficiency while condensing the surpassing wisdom and rich experience of craftsmen from ancient times to the present. Thus, it is worthwhile to research the connotation of traditional buildings to develop modern architectures.

Abstract:There is an urgent requisite on the preservation of Chinesearchitectural heritages, since environmental and time impacts have been abating their structural resistance capability. Based on the experimental studies on an ancient timber structure in the proceeding companion paper, a semi-rigid element is defined and a 3-dimensional FEM model is developed in this paper. By comparing with measured results, the stiffness of semi-rigid element is deduced and dynamic characteristics of the front tower over Xi'an City Wall are obtained.

Abstract:The ancient town Tuokou was a small capitalist town in the southern part of China during the Ming and Qing Dynasty,whose development relied on trade and agriculture.Besides,it was also one of the transport hubs of the South Silk Road in ancient China.The culture of Dong,Miao,Tujia and Han people had a deep effect on its traditional architectures.As a result,there are various kinds of buildings designed for trade,inhabitant,workshop,religion,education and transportation.These types of buildings have rich contents and are characterized by the guiding of trade,the merger of different cultures,and the domination of belief.Meanwhile,the traditional buildings of Tuokou also have different aspects of values,such as tourism,art appreciation,historical culture and so on.

Abstract:This study suggests a pioneering conservation framework that significantly enhances the preservation, renovation, and restoration of heritage architecture through the integration of contemporary digital technologies. Focusing on the endangered drum towers of the Dong ethnic group in Southwestern China, the research employs a meticulous data collection process that combines manual measurements with precise 2D imaging and oblique unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) photography, enabling comprehensive documentation of tower interiors and exteriors. Collaboration with local experts in drum tower construction not only enriches the data gathered but also provides profound insights into the architectural nuances of these structures. An accurate building information modeling (BIM) simulation illuminates the internal engineering details, deepening the understanding of their complex design. Furthermore, UAV-obtained point cloud data facilitate a 3D reconstruction of the tower’s exterior. This innovative approach to heritage preservation not only advances the documentation and comprehension of heritage structures but also presents a scalable, replicable model for cultural conservation globally, paving the way for future research in the field.
