Abstract:Wooden architecture sites are important archaeological objects in southern China. Existing archaeological studies generally believe that the settlement architecture of the Hemudu period is single-story pile-dwelling. Because of its unique geological conditions, a large number of well-preserved wooden pillars have been unearthed in the Tianluoshan site, Zhejiang province, China. Based on the huge settlement founded under wooden pillars at this site, the historical load on the wooden pillar was calculated in reverse according to the calculation method of foundation settlement. Then the tribal architectural form at that time can be inferred according to the layout map of the wooden pillar at the Tianluoshan site. The results show that the Hemudu culture could build multistory buildings already, which presumed to be sacrificial buildings.

Abstract:Research of architecture heritages requires a harmonious work of multidisciplinary team of specialists dealing with history, art and structural mechanics and materials. It is the three aspects of the research of historical architecture heritages, i.e. architecture history, architecture art and architecture science. Preservation and research are nowadays an essential requirement for the famous monuments, buildings, towers and others. Our society is more and more conscious of this necessity, which involves increasing activities of restoration, and then sometimes also of repair, mechanical strengthening and seismic retrofitting. Many historical buildings have in fact problems of structural strength and stability; the need for research on structural mechanics and materials is definitely growing. Xi'an is a historical and cultural city. Xi'an and Xi'an area served as capital of twelve dynasties, spanning over 1080 years. Many historical buildings of Tang dynasty and Ming dynasty are preserved up to now. Our researches on structural mechanics and materials of historical structures were begun since 1982. It was the need of the repair of some national preservation relics, including the Arrow Tower at North City Gate, Bell Tower at the center of city, City Tower at East City Gate, City Wall in Xi'an etc. These researches also include some brick masonry such as the Big Goose Pagoda and Small Goose Pagoda. The structural mechanics of ancient architecture, mechanical characteristics of ancient soil under foundation and city wall; the influence of caves in and under the Ancient City Wall built at the age of Game of Four (1966-1976) on the stability of wall; behavior of Dougong and Joggle joint of wooden structure, differential settlements of Arrow Tower and resistance to earthquake of these historical architecture heritages are studied. This paper gives a summary of these researches.

Abstract:With the development of social and economy, the increased people's living standard and the accelerated urbanization, a large number of domestic ancient architecture have already been disappeared or in danger of disappearing due to man-made destruction and natural decay. Chinese Ancient Architectures are on the verge of disappearing. This paper makes research on ancient architectural form and structure to collect the digital reduction of the Ming and Qing dynasties. Through using MAYA and Zbrush to establish a digital building model library, it makes people have a full understanding and grasp on ancient buildings of Ming and Qing dynasties from images, three - dimensional digital models and documents.

Abstract:Assembled steel structure residential houses have the significant advantages of light weight, high strength and a high degree of utilization of space, which is an important development direction of the future residential industry for meeting the strategic needs of China's "four sections -environmental protection", sustainable development of the construction industry, and the technical requirements of industrialization of housing construction. This paper reviews and summarizes the current status and research progress on the static performance and seismic performance of fabricated multi-story steel column-column connections, including connection types, tests, finite element analysis, etc. These results provide a reference for the further research work and establishing the design methods on column-column connections in the steel structures, as is expected to promote the application of the column-column connections in China's steel structure engineering.

Abstract:Three full-scale Dou-Gong specimens at column tops are made according to the Qing Dynasty "code of engineering practice," based on the prototype of one Dou and two Sheng Jiaomaye Dou-Gong of Jiayuguan tower. The three-dimensional load-displacement curve of Dou-Gong is obtained using three-dimensional static loading tests. Furthermore, the deformation characteristics, three-dimensional compression stiffness, and three-dimensional load transfer law of each layer of the Dou-Gong are analyzed. The test results indicate that the vertical failure characteristics of the Dou-Gong are the splitting of the Flat-Fang, and there is no obvious damage to the horizontal members until toppling. The three-dimensional load-displacement relationship curve of the Dou-Gong can be simplified to a two-fold line model, vertical stiffness of the Dou-Gong is significantly greater than the horizontal stiffness, and the horizontal stiffness in the beam direction is greater than the horizontal stiffness in the Fang direction. Using ABAQUS software, a comparative analysis of the difference in mechanical properties between the Dou-Gong at the column tops and the Dou-Gong between the columns is performed. The research results can provide a theoretical basis for the structural performance safety assessment and preventive protection of the Jiayuguan tower and similar Chinese ancient wooden structures.

Abstract:Although it does not occupy a large territory,the southern part of Shanxi Province is characterized by its complicated mountainous terrain and inconvenient transportation.Dating back to ancient times,South Shanxi was boasted of as an area with advanced culture and regional economy.Enjoying a situation where timing, geographical location and the support of people are very favourable,a large quantity of China's ancient architecture buildings have successfully escaped from numerous disasters in history and have been preserved well until today.There remains over 300 ancient wooden architecture buildings dating back to Yuan Dynasty and the time prior to Yuan Dynasty.Generally speaking,these ancient wooden architecture buildings were not built in large scales,with the style of three bay-width rooms and one-storey single-eave roof halls.These ancient architecture buildings were built with width of five bay-width rooms and few of them were designed to have double eaves and attics.Being endowed with long-standing history,large quantity,complete layout,a great variety of styles and construction techniques as well as unique and rich historical relics of relevant art categories,these ancient architecture buildings have significant value in studying the history of China's ancient architecture and promoting excellent historical and cultural heritage.

Abstract:Dingzhou Confucian Temple is a key cultural relic protection unit in Hebei Province, and its digital protection has important historical and cultural value. Based on its architectural characteristics and cultural connotation, the digital information of the architectural layout, the appearance and structure of the main buildings such as dachengdian is collected. The collected 2D and 3D data are integrated and processed by point cloud registration, point cloud denoising, point cloud sampling and other technologies, and the virtual roaming system is developed. With the developed and released virtual roaming system, visitors can vividly appreciate the Confucian Temple. The interpretation system for Dingzhou Confucian Temple can be applied for all-around demonstration and dissemination, to carry forward and propagate its cultural and architectural connotations. Digital protection of the Confucian Temple is a perfect combination of architectural cultural heritage and information technology.

Abstract:[Objective] Through in-depth study of traditional Gan residential buildings, it is found that in China’s traditional culture, nature is more important than architecture. Many people believe that architecture is like a man-made natural object, which can make people return to a feeling of living in nature, and is also a state of ideal life for many residents in China. [Methods] By using the analysis method, it is found that the traditional residential building structure of Ganpai is a bucket structure. The basic unit is the ‘enter’ relationship, which combines the ‘enter’ relationship, the adjustment of column spacing and the reduction of column to form the ‘+ -’ relationship. Through this way, a unique architectural group layout can be formed. [Conclusion] Therefore, we should fully combine traditional materials with modern information means to improve our traditional technology, so as to keep pace with the times, keep pace with the times and keep pace with the times.

Abstract:Due to its special geographical conditions, Guangdong has absorbed the essence of the Central Plains Han culture and characteristics of foreign cultures, resulting in architecture in which traditional buildings exhibit unique regional cultural connotations. The architectural design is adapted to the needs of nature and ecology and the arts and humanities. This paper investigates the technical process of using local materials to obtain structural materials. Traditional Guangdong buildings use patios, cold alleys and doors as well as windows in a comprehensive manner to create an energy-saving and environmentally friendly ventilation design, which was analyzed here. In addition, we study the floor plans and artistic characteristics of traditional buildings in different regions of Guangdong. Traditional Guangdong buildings realize the harmonious coexistence of humans and nature, as well as embody the concept of sustainable development. Traditional buildings integrate benefits and efficiency while condensing the surpassing wisdom and rich experience of craftsmen from ancient times to the present. Thus, it is worthwhile to research the connotation of traditional buildings to develop modern architectures.

Abstract:There is an urgent requisite on the preservation of Chinesearchitectural heritages, since environmental and time impacts have been abating their structural resistance capability. Based on the experimental studies on an ancient timber structure in the proceeding companion paper, a semi-rigid element is defined and a 3-dimensional FEM model is developed in this paper. By comparing with measured results, the stiffness of semi-rigid element is deduced and dynamic characteristics of the front tower over Xi'an City Wall are obtained.

Abstract:Through an examination of existing ancient timber construction, the ancient architectural text Yingzao fashi and indirectly related historical documents, the author reveals the various types of systems of wall support arches used in China in the period from the 7th to the 14th centuries, as well as their regional and temporal characteristics. The author then proceeds to examine the characteristics of architecture in speci?c parts of northern and southern China in this period, as well as the relationship between the speci?cally regional elements in Yingzao fashi and their dissemination. The author further suggests than the study and appreciation of the details of place and time in the forms of ancient Chinese architecture possibly provide the foundations for studying the ancient architectural history of all of north-eastern Asia.

Abstract:Three courtyards nine halls is an important cultural asset in eastern Zhejiang. This paper takes Three courtyards nine halls dwellings in the eastern part of Zhejiang province of China as the research object, collecting data with field research, measurement, interviews and other research methods, to analyze the spatial characteristics and construction culture of traditional dwellings. Research findings: First, influenced by the natural environment, artificial environment and social environment, three courtyards nine halls is a complex of residential buildings with san-ho-yuan as a unit, extending vertically and horizontally. Second, with the influences of the Confucian culture, the architectural layout is symmetrically distributed along the central axis, and the architectural space presents a high degree of consistency. Third, the architectural complex was formed by the same clan. The last one is that the architectural form and culture show consistency, which implies the idea of harmony between man and nature, the farming and studying hand down from generation to generation. On the one hand, with the acceleration of the urbanization process, living conditions have been greatly improved. On the other hand, due to the weak awareness of residents’ protection of traditional residential cultural assets, lack of systematic study on traditional residential construction methods, construction techniques and space culture, new buildings are not in harmony with traditional dwellings, therefore, traditional dwellings are seriously damaged. This paper discusses the sustainable development of traditional residential culture by studying the construction and environmental elements of Three courtyards nine halls, taking the residential space as a principal part to analyze the characteristics, functional attributes, organizational principles, order, and sense of place.
