On the Influence of Western Learning on the Korean Confucian Thinker of Cha Shan

Abstract:Tasan,also named Chǒng Yagyong(1762-1836),is a master of Practical Learningin the late Korean Dynasty,whose thought reflect the contents of the original Confucian,Zhu Xi and Western learning on the whole.As a Confucian scholar,his thinking,to a large extent,reflect the characteristics of the Western learning.To the western research,he has a deep theoretical foundation,which is mainly reflected in his the theoretical critical part of the concept of Confucianism,such as God-orientation,nature-orientation,and people-orientation.Not only that,Tasan also showed a positive attitude toward the western religious system.In his classic writings,God and the spirits are given a lot of meaning.If these are out of the Catholic faith,it will be hard to explain them.It is worth noting that Tasan's understanding of Western learning is realized by the re-interpretation of Confucianism,not by the reasons of faith that would bring the Western institutional factors such as church into the Confucianism society of that time.By understanding and absorption of the western learning,Tasan tries to make the Confucian thought become systemized.This has played a very important role in the development of Confucianism in Korea,and in the pursuit of harmony of the East and West,it has also played a good theoretical reference effect.
