Abstract:As one of the earliest literary intellectuals who contacted the western missionaries and western civilization in the late Qing dynasty, Wang Tao's perception on western civilization can be divided into the following phases: the period of Shanghai London Missionary Society Press, the period of the Hong Kong Anglo-Chinese College, the period of assisting James Legge in England in translating Chinese Classics, and the period of coming back to Hong Kong and then to Shanghai. Moreover, Wang Tao's attitudes towards the western civilization can also be divided into three modes as following: towards the Protestant Christianity, towards the natural sciences and towards the western literature. The above ideas and attitudes of Wang Tao can be revealed in his two travel books: one is traveling to the West; the other is traveling to the East (Japan). This paper makes a critical interpretation on the above two travel books, and makes analytical explanation for the shaping of his ideas.

Abstract:Taoism,based on Lao-tse's theory of Tao,is a unique theoretical cultural system with strong vitality and lasting influence.It is an accumulation of the traditions of Taoism culture that last for thousands of years.At present and in the future,we need to understand clearly the status of Taoism as a part of the world's culture.We oppose the western-centric globalization,as well as the arrogance of chauvinism in the eastern world.Taoism is just one facet of multi-culture.It shouldn not be seen as a new cultural pattern that has dominant influence.By applying the thoughts and theory of Taoism to international conversation,the values of our nation could make contribution to the world.Taoism shows great wisdom and remarkable effects in dealing with interpersonal problems and issues between man and himself,which also reflect its unrelenting charm and value in the modern world.
Western Literature or Western Learning? On Wang Tao’s Experience and Practice

Abstract:The communication between Wang Tao(1828-1897) and protestant missionaries in the Late Qing Dynasty focused on the Western religion and learning.When discussing Western learning,Wang Tao also used the term "literature," a term that would have great influence on the developmental history of pre-modern Chinese literary thoughts.While he had a systematic exploration into the development of Western learning and the Jesuits’ works in the Late Ming,Wang Tao didn’t elaborate on the concept of the term "wenxue(literature)," although he had mentioned Western poetry and other genres as well as some important Greek,Roman and British poets.Wang Tao’s experience and his understanding of Western literature were developed after the protestant missionaries introduced the Western concept of literature into China and recognized the term "wenxue" as the equivalent to "literature." The historical significance of the term still holds value to contemporary academic explorations into literary and intellectual history.

Abstract:The pivotal period in Wang Tao's relationship with protestant missionaries,the church,and Christianity occurred in the 1850s,especially during the period of 1854-1857.The turning point in his relationship to Christianity was the death of Walter Henry Medhurst.During the period of Wang Tao's involvement he not only succeeded his father as a translator who assisted Medhurst and others in finishing the translation of the Bible,but he also revised,and almost rewrote and translated,Medhurst's Zongzhu Shipian,and he actively took part in mission work.During this time,Wang Tao also asked to be baptized and submitted a baptismal application.The application revealed that his connection with Christianity had reached the highest point.Aside from social and cultural factors at that time,Wang Tao's standpoint of supporting the "self-strengthening"of Chinese culture,his worldly and rational knowledge,his awareness of comparative religion,his deep-rooted feelings and living habits of literati placed him in the interstices between Christian belief and non-Christian thought.He eventually completed his intellectual life in pursuit of his belief,with doubt and self-imposed exile as a intellectual in late Qing China.

Abstract:Due to differences in traditional cultures,the view of life and death between Chinese and Westerners takes on distinctive connotations.The Chinese traditional culture is manifested by Confucianism and Taoism;the former treats life mainly from the perspective of "birth",focusing on existence;and the latter considers life as a natural process,emphasizing life's own course.As a contrast,Westerners view life chiefly from the perspective of "termination"(i.e.death).Consequently,these differences in perspectives will result in disagreements on their view of life and death.

This wish is typically demonstrated in the celestial ideal and immortal theories and practice of Taoism in ancient China.From the perspective of thought history this paper explains the views of life and death about Confucianism and Taoism,especially the content and the historical changes of the immortal thoughts of Taoism.The paper also discusses the cultural content of the sin consciousness of western religion,and further makes some reflections on the developmental tendency of future scientific civilization from the perspective of bioethics.

Abstract:Based on different traditional cultures,the view of life and death between ancient Chinese and westerners presents distinctive connotations.Confucianism and Taoism play an important role in ancient Chinese culture,so their interpretations on the view of life and death are representative in China.Confucianism,focusing on practicing "Three Builts",lays emphasis on realistic life in order to achieve immortality,while Taoism pays more attention to heavenly law,which is a view of natural way.On the contrary,the view on life and death in ancient western culture,starting from the perspective of "termination"(i.e.death),advocates the idea of "soul immortality".Chinese and western literary works show different situations under the influence of different views of life and death.

Abstract:The relationship between “expression” and“Tao”is the basic theme in the Chinese literature. During the period of Wei and Jin dynasties, some intellectuals such as Cao Pi and Liu Xie began to establish this relationship, and “Tao” coming from Confucianism became the core of Chinese literature. In Tang dynasty,“Haofang” and “Xionghun” constituted the original style of“Expressing Tao”, and “Tao” became concrete from abstract. So, realistic feature of “Tao” was highlighted after the mid-Tang dynasty. Furthermore, advocacy and practice on the relationship between “expression” and “Tao” laid the foundation for “carrying Tao”thought of neo-Confucianism in Song dynasty.

Abstract:Wisdom views in different cultural contexts are closely connected with the corresponding culture's worldview. Some results are found by comparing the wisdom concepts in Chinese and Western cultures: Firstly, the early wisdom concepts, both in China and the West, contain the elements of intelligence and virtue. Whereas, from the Enlightenment to the Piagetian school, the western concept of wisdom has then shifted to the role of cognition and knowledge; By contrast, the traditional Chinese wisdom concept has been treating wisdom as a virtue. Modern Chinese and western wisdom psychologists are inclined to accept the wisdom meta-theory of "integration of intelligence and virtue". Secondly, both Chinese and the Western philosophy advocate using wisdom to solve real-life problems. Western thinkers focus on practical problems in the material world, i.e. reconciling conflicts between people and the world through understanding and changing the environment. However, Chinese philosophers focus on internal spiritual problems, i.e. improving the individual realm to solve the contradictions inside oneself. Thirdly, both China and the West highlight the comprehensive application of multiple thinking modes. While comparing with the west, which is excelled in using logical and analytical thinking modes and utilizing rational cognition, China is far better at using dialectical and holistic thinking modes and applying intuitive comprehension.

Abstract:By means of textual research,the paper probes into the innermost world of a Shanghai Catholic scholar Xu Zuanzeng(1627-1698).The paper argues that Xu represented the second generation of one of the most well-known Christian families in Shanghai,that in comparison with his ancestry,there was not too much contradiction between Chinese and Western cultures in his heart,that as a result of not adhering to one religion,his life-guide was made up of different values and believes,and that the Catholic influence in his inner world could be analyzed in the deep context which was composed of his life,his family,his works,and his relations with others.

Abstract:The paper starts with explaining Mr. Yan Fu’s thesis‘The Topics of Western Philosophy are not outside of the Twelve Words of <Laozi>’,dissertates the three contribution of Yan Fu on comparative study of Chinese and western philosophies. First, Yan Fu is the first person who compares Chinese and western philosophies with the means of linguistics. By subtly discriminating‘to be’or‘is’from‘系’or‘悬’or‘玄’,he illuminated that Chinese ancient philosophers also brought forward the question that‘to be as to be’and supported their own answers. Then, he proved that it is self-evident that there was ontology in Chinese philosophy. Secondly, he profoundly treated that it is essential to make our entire nation have plain and profound spirit of science, after demonstrating that Chinese ancient philosophers were also good at syllogism of logic through a lot of reality, and exploring the reason why logic in Chinese philosophy was un-developed and the relationship between Chinese language and logic, between logic and spirit of science. Thirdly, he connected Chinese philosophy with western philosophy through comparative study of them, commented Taoism, Mohism, Confucianism and Legalism roundly, and transformed philosophy tradition in a creative way with the standing of modern philosophy. Yan Fu is not only‘the first one to introduce western culture into China in the end of Qin dynasty’,but also a real successor of the excellent tradition of Chinese philosophy.
