Ceramic in-situ forming based on gelation of sodium alginate

Abstract:A novel gel-casting process by gelation is discussed in this paper. A natural innoxious polymer, Sodium Alginate, is used to crosslink with calcium ions, which forms the three-dimensional network. Therefore, ceramic powders are held in this network and the slurry is consolidated. The solidified agent and chelator are added into sodium alginate solution simultaneously, thus the gelation between calcium ions and sodium alginate is avoided in this stage due to the chelate complex formed from the chelator and solidified agent. When hexanedioic acid is added into the suspension, free calcium ions are released from the chelate complexes and react with sodium alginate, forming a three-dimensional network. By this way, the control on gelation is realized. The solidified agent and the chelator are determined through the study of alumina gel-casting. The selection of dispersant, the rheological property of the slurry and the effect of the concentration of the other reagents on the slurry and the green body are investigated through the study of re-crystallized silicon carbide. Green body with bend strength of similar to3MPa, perfect surface and homogeneous microstructure was produced by this process.
