Abstract:Optical glass is widely used as the most important material in optical field in recent years. Glass molding press (GMP) has been employed as a promising technique to manufacture optical components in mass production. Heating time and annealing time are the key factors which influence the production cycle. In this paper, an effective method of improving the heating or the annealing effectiveness is to increase the area exposed to the cooling or hot nitrogen by means of adding slots. In the same condition, four models with different slots were built. Based on the theoretical analysis of glass heating and annealing property in the molding process, finite element simulation was carried out. The results showed that the model with slots may decrease the heating and annealing time.

Abstract:Calcination shrinkage is an essential factor in the evaluation of a gypsum-bonded mold. Typically, if traditional fillers are used in a gypsum-bonded mold, it is difficult to maintain sufficient strength due to the high dosages of fillers. In this study, we proposed a new filler system of gypsum, boehmite, to more efficiently compensate for the shrinkage, whilst minimizing the impact on the strength. The effects of the fillers on the calcination shrinkages and mechanical properties of the gypsum-bonded molds were studied. The phase transition and thermal expansion behaviors of the gypsum-bonded molds were tested by thermal gravimetric analysis/differential scanning calorimetry (TG/DSC) and thermal dilatometer. The microstructures of the fillers and gypsum-bonded molds were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results showed that the dosage of boehmite for near-zero shrinkage was reduced to about 35 wt%, with the bending strength of the gypsum-bonded mold remaining above 2 MPa throughout the whole calcination process. The mechanism of calcination expansion was revealed and ultimately attributed to the splitting of boehmite particles. This research provides a novel gypsum-bonded mold for required high dimensional and mechanical properties, elevating the ability to form complex structures.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Abstract Gypsum is a very important cementitious material in gypsum-based precision casting. The thermal expansion characteristics of gypsum have great influence on the adjustment of gypsum type precision casting powder formula. In this paper, the thermal expansion properties of different gypsums such as β-gypsum, natural gypsum-based α-gypsum, desulfurization gypsum-based α-gypsum, and the influence of temperature, heating rate/heating mode on the thermal expansion properties of α-gypsum are studied, which can provide references for the application of gypsum in the precision casting.

Abstract:The issues of transferring the production of parts manufactured by cutting at the qaz Carbon LLP plant to casting in gypsum molds are considered. A methodology for designing the technological process of casting plaster molds using computer modeling is proposed. This method allows you to reduce material and financial costs, as well as reduce the time of mastering the production of parts by sand casting. One of the methods of casting is the production of castings, which provides a sharp increase in labor productivity. Using the Flow – 3D program, it is possible to significantly simplify the casting process, and forms are created taking into account the progress of the process of transition of the material from a liquid state to a solid state. The work calculates casting defects, stresses and deformations. Optimization of the technological process based on the results of modeling the casting process by preparing the casting «bearing shield», reducing the amount of nutrients of the casting system, increasing the output coefficient of suitable casting, a 3D model core model is developed for the development of control programs for the production of equipment on CNC machines

Abstract:The issues of improvement and optimization of the properties and structure of porous molds used in the ceramic industry are still relevant. In this work, plaster materials based on the mix of α- and β-calcium sulfate hemihydrate (α-CaSO 4·0.5H 2O, β-CaSO 4·0.5H 2O) were received and their properties were studied. Based on the test results of the strength characteristics, water adsorption and kinetics of formation process, the optimum composition of gypsum binder was proposed for application in technical ceramics production.

Abstract:Zirconia ceramic green parts were prepared by gelcasting using acetone-soluble plastic molds printed by fused deposition modeling (FDM) method. The demolding process was then completed by acetone immersion and manual removal. The dispersant content, solid content and ball milling parameters were investigated by analyzing the rheological properties of the zirconia slurry. The mechanical properties and microstructure of furnace-sintered samples with different solid content from 48 vol% to 54 vol% were also tested. Sintered sample prepared from the slurry with 50 vol% solid content had the highest relative density (99.57 ± 0.49%), bending strength (947.8 ± 8.8 MPa) and Vickers hardness (1371.2 ± 225.8 HV). The research showed a positive and practical approach to fabricate ceramic parts with complex shape or structure by gelcasting based on additive manufactured soluble mold.

Abstract:Previously, a way to process phosphogypsum (PG) into non-fired ceramic tile by an intermittent loading hydration process was proposed; however, its mechanical strength and especially waterproof property are unsatisfactory. Herein, PG non-fired ceramic with a porosity reduced was prepared and used as a matrix, which was then impregnated with MMA together with azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) and benzoyl peroxide (BPO) as initiators. After polymerization, a novel 3-3 type PMMA/PG non-fired ceramic composite with highly improved mechanical and waterproof properties was obtained. The bending strength, softening coefficient, and contact angle of the PMMA/PG composite are 21.5 MPa, 0.78, and 75.1°, which are 1.43, 1.77, and 1.68 times those of the matrix, respectively. It is found that PMMA completely covers the matrix surface and well fills the interparticle pores of dihydrate gypsum crystals inside the matrix, forming an interpenetrating and dense composite structure. This work can guide not only the utilization of waste PG but also the development of polymer/gypsum composite product.

Abstract:A new type of paste filling material was created using fluorogypsum, a byproduct of hydrofluoric acid, as the raw material to address the issue of the filling material's high cost. The effects of five factors, including gangue, fly ash, fluorogypsum, lime content, and mass concentration on the physical and mechanical properties of filling material were also examined. In addition to analyzing slump and extension changes, the filler's mineral composition and microstructure were examined using SEM and XRD examinations. The results show that the best ratio of the developed filling material was 1000g coal gangue, 300g fly ash, 300g fluorogypsum, and 50g lime and mass concentration is 78%, and its compressive strength can reach 4–5MPa at 28 days. Raw materials such as gangue and fly ash will have a certain influence on the mechanical properties of the filling material. The hydration products of the developed filling material prepared by XRD and SEM were ettringite, calcium sulfate dihydrate, and calcium silicate hydrate gel. The new fluorogypsum-based paste filling material can be used to consolidate loose rock strata and fill goaf. It solves the problem of disposal of industrial waste fluoropgypsum and also solves the problem of coal mine gangue stacking, which has a far-reaching influence on ecological environment management.

Abstract:A novel binder jetting process using a mixture of sodium silicate powders and water-based solvent as an inorganic binder system and the corresponding posttreatment process were developed to resolve a contradiction of increased strength with reduced gas volume of sand molds fabricated by traditional binder jetting processes using organic binder. Optimized processing parameters of 50% binder saturation, 10 wt.% sodium silicate powder addition, 0.2 mm layer thickness, 50 vol.% infiltration concentration of alcohol – water solution, 5 min infiltration time, and 250 °C baking temperature buried in glass beads for 1 h were determined by the systematically investigation of printing process. The produced sand mold achieved an excellent performance with a tensile strength of 4.5 MPa and a maximum gas volume of 8.1 L/kg. A casting experiment was carried out to verify the performance of sand mold, the results showed that the casting fabricated using the sand mold prepared by the process studied in this paper has a better surface quality and fewer subcutaneous blowholes in comparison to the traditional process, indicating its excellent industrial application prospects.

Abstract:To improve the mechanical properties and water resistance of gypsum specimens, thus solving the pollution problem due to the accumulation of flue gas desulfurization gypsum (FGD gypsum), etc. The article utilizes flue gas desulfurization gypsum, gypsum citrate, and mineral powder as the main raw materials under a fixed ratio. The Alkali-activation gypsum-based cementitious material (Alkali-activation GM-S95 system) was obtained by modifying it with 0-5% Na(OH) and Ca(OH)2 alkaline admixtures, and the mechanical properties and water resistance of the Alkali-activation GM-S95 system were thoroughly investigated. The structural characteristics of the Alkali-activation GM-S95 system specimens were investigated using XRD, TG, SEM and LF-NMR techniques to explore their interactions. The results showed that the compressive strength of the Alkali-activation GM-S95 system was significantly increased to 26 MPa when 4% Ca(OH)2 was added alone, and the water absorption was decreased to 12.5%.The addition of 4% Ca(OH)2 caused the crystals of gypsum dihydrate to be thicker and denser, and AFT and C-S-H gels were produced, which were attached around the crystals of gypsum dihydrate. The addition of different admixtures can reduce the proportion of large pores and further fill the crystal structure. In summary, the addition of 4% Ca(OH)2 can improve the compressive strength and water resistance of the samples of Alkali-activation GM-S95 system, thus laying a solid foundation for the comprehensive utilization of flue gas desulfurization gypsum.
Research on formulation optimization and hydration mechanism of phosphogypsum-based filling cementitious materials

Abstract:Phosphogypsum is a solid waste produced in the production of wet-process phosphoric acid. The main component is calcium sulfate dihydrate, and its constant calcium activity is very low. It is a very difficult waste to handle. The slag produced in the ironmaking processes of the Jiuquan Iron and Steel Company has high activity and can be mixed with phosphogypsum to prepare backfilling cementitious materials for the backfilling of goaf (see Introduction below) to prevent its subsidence and cracking and subsequent subsidence of the land surface above the goaf. In this paper, an orthogonal test of material strength under different ratios and finenesses was carried out, and the optimal formula of phosphogypsum-based cementitious material was obtained. On this basis, SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) and XRD (X-ray Diffraction) were used to observe the internal structure of phosphogypsum-based cementitious materials. The results show that: when the content of quicklime is 5.5%–6.0%, the content of phosphogypsum is 30%–33%, the content of NaOH is 1.5%–2.0%, the content of Glauber's salt is 2.5%–3%, the average particle size is 15.88 μm, and grinding aids and an early strengthening agent were added, and in the case of the strengthening agent, the 3-days and 7-days strengths of the filling reached the highest values of 1.58 MPa (mean flexural strength) and 4.1 MPa, respectively. The formation of calcium silicate hydrates gel (C-S-H) and ettringite (AFt) gradually increased with age, and the structure became denser. The ettringite plays the role of interspersed support in the filling body, thereby improving the overall strength. This research provides a theoretical basis and practical reference for the treatment of goaf.

Abstract:The mechanical properties of geopolymer foams (GPFs) are strongly influenced by their matrix skeletons and pore structures. The complex and mutually interfering process parameters required for fabricating the matrix and pore structures have an unpredictable effect on the physicomechanical properties of the resulting GPFs; therefore, a rapid method for optimizing the process parameters is essential for the preparation of high-performance GPFs. Rheological properties (i.e., viscosity and setting time) are key for establishing the correlations between pore structures and process parameters. A rheological area division method was proposed herein to determine the relationship between the rheological properties and pore structure. Simplex-centroid and Taguchi methods were used to reveal the effect of process parameters on the skeleton mechanical strength and slurry rheological properties, and further guide the optimization of physicomechanical properties. Using this scheme, GPFs with uniform pore size, robust pores, and high porosity, content of connected pores, and compressive strength were fabricated. This study provides a new scheme for developing GPFs with desired pore structure and mechanical strength for wider applications.

Abstract:Replacing cement clinker by industrial by-products is important for their safe utilization and cost reduction. This study focused on multi-component ecological gelling material mainly consisting of granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) powder with added fly ash, calcium carbide slag, phosphogypsum, and about 20 % of PII cement. By means of compressive strength, mortar fluidity, leaching behavior, XRD, FTIR, TG and SEM, the effects of such key indices as the water-binder ratio and contents of cement, fly ash, calcium carbide slag, and GGBS on the working performance and mechanical properties of the proposed material were studied and discussed in detail. The best mechanical properties, with a 28 MPa strength reached in 7 days, were obtained at a water-binder ratio of 0.5, fly ash-to-GGBS ratio of 1:2, phosphogypsum-to-calcium carbide slag ratio of 1:2, and a 20 % cement content. The fuzzy ordinal priority approach (OPA-F) was used to analyze the influence of each component on the 3 d, 7 d, and 28 d strength, ranking them in the decreasing order as follows: GGBS, fly ash, cement, calcium carbide slag, and phosphogypsum. By combining the fuzzy sequential priority method (OPA-F) with the experiment, the analysis results are more rigorous and the theory and experiment are combined. The results obtained are considered instrumental in optimizing multi-component ecological gelling materials for practical applications.

Abstract:Building gypsum has the disadvantages of low strength and poor water resistance, which limits its wide use. In this paper, the mechanical properties and water absorption behavior of building gypsum by ternary matrix mixture (including cement, fly ash and lime) were optimized. Three maximum levels under the influence of different factors (including cement, fly ash and lime) were initially obtained through single-factor experimental analysis. Next, multifactor experiments were performed using the Box–Behnken design approach. The effects of different multifactor were analyzed using response surface methodology, and relevant prediction models were established and verified. Subsequently, the effects of different factors were verified through optimization mechanism analysis, including thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscope. The results indicated that the maximum compressive strength and water absorption values were observed at a single-factor impact (including cement, fly ash, and lime) content of 20 %. Prediction models of the compressive strength and water absorption were established, and the proposed models exhibited a high degree of fitness. In addition, the optimum content ratios for the compressive strength and water absorption were cement: fly ash: lime = 10 %: 20 %: 14.86 % and 20 %: 20 %: 14.29 %, respectively. Furthermore, the optimal group exhibited a high intensity, the total weight loss decreased by 35 %. at high temperatures, and a homogeneous structure and distributed crystalline network of gypsum crystals were formed.

Properties of Fiber Reinforced Plaster Molds for Investment Casting

Abstract:In order to improve the performance of plaster molds for investment casting, a diverse content of glass fiber and polypropylene (PP) fiber was incorporated into the slurry for the preparation of a fiber-reinforced mold. The green and fired bending strengths, thermal expansion properties, permeability, and thermal shock resistance of the mold were examined, and the scanning electron microscope (SEM) with energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) was applied for the observation of fracture morphology. With appropriate content, the introduction of glass fiber was proved to increase the green bending strength and fired bending strength, restrain the thermal expansion and improve the thermal shock resistance of the mold, while the polypropylene fiber added was able to raise the green bending strength and the permeability, reduce the thermal expansion and heighten the thermal shock resistance as well, though the fired bending strength would be weakened slightly. Evenly distributed fibers were capable of enhancing the mechanical properties of the matrix, but agglomerations and bundles of fibers resulting from excessive addition had a negative impact. Meanwhile, it was also manifested that micropores left by ablative polypropylene fibers could improve the permeability and reduce the thermal expansion of the mold, and the fired bending strength would be decreased slightly by the deterioration of continuous structure. Three different ratios of hybrid fiber were employed in plaster molds, which can meet altered requirement of castings. The samples modified with hybrid fiber possessed lower thermal deformation, higher air permeability, and better resistance of thermal shock, while the mechanical strength was equal to the fiber free sample or slightly increased.

Abstract:Waste gypsum is one of the typical industrial solid waste in the world. Due to its treatment technical barriers, the existing treatment of waste gypsum is mainly stockpiled. And with the rapid development of industry, the treatment of waste gypsum has become one of the key issues of environmental protection. In this study, blocks of phosphogypsum were pressed by conventional mechanical methods, and subsequently, the effects of different pressing press pressures, curing times, moisture content and different added substances on the mechanical and waterproof properties of the block were investigated. The experimental results showed that when the pressing pressure is 300 MPa, curing time is 3 d, water content is 5%, and the content of elemental iron and aluminum is 1%, the mechanical properties and waterproof performance are the best. At this time, the compressive strength is 54 MPa, the flexural strength is 8 MPa, and the softening coefficient is more than 0.90. Through the leaching toxicity analysis, it was found that the pressed block has a better sealing effect on the toxic and harmful substances in the waste gypsum, and the toxic and harmful substances were not be released. This method provides an economic and simple way for high value-added resource treatment of solid waste gypsum.

Abstract:Gypsum is a historical binder that was already used thousands of years ago. More recently its employment in construction had a significant growth. It is a binding material being used in masonry as a plaster finish coat. Despite being economical, having good performance and easy application in buildings, its use is limited to indoors due to its solubility. Some efforts have been made to improve its performance in external environment. In that sense, researches advance in the attempt at using several admixtures like epoxy resins, polymers, cements, slags and waterproofing materials. The aim of this work was to investigate the effect of blastfurnace slag Portland cement addition to β-hemihydrate and observe the changes in mechanical properties and microstructure to improve gypsum performance. Results show an improvement of gypsum performance when this kind of cement is added to the mixture and a 3-years rendering exposed to external environment had no changes, indicating that there was no ettringite formation. SEM analysis showed a more compact structure which can result in a water resistant composite.
