Abstract:Issues related to language change have received much attention in the framework of grammaticalization over the past three decades.Meanwhile, there have appeared serious criticisms, for instance,is there grammaticalization? One of the challenges goes with the Unidirectionality Hypothesis prevailing in the field and threatens the research paradigm of this practice. This paper looked at the issue from a sociolinguistic perspective,by emphasizing the impacts of gender and age of the speaker upon language change;it re-examined the linguistic philosophy of Meillet, the founder of contemporary grammaticalization studies, and highlighted his thinking on the relationships between language, culture, society, and speakers in linguistic study. Two cases of language change in progress(i.e.,"be + like" quotatives and "as far as" constructions) were chosen and re-examined.A model of Projected Mirror-imaging Contrast(PMC) was developed to present a holistic survey of controversial issues discussed.New findings and developments in theoretic linguistics, neurolinguistics, and linguistic ecology were also discussed.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
