Abstract:Using the differential geometric control theory, we presented the necessary and sufficient conditions under which smooth affine nonlinear systems with single inputs are equivalent to, via state transformation, a given p-normal form. The presented verifiable conditions involve the vector fields obtained by some suitably chosen iterative Lie brackets of the vector fields which define the system. The proof is based on a new technique for applying the Frobenius Theorem in a more convenient way by converting a set of quasilinear partial differential equations with the same main portion to a set of homogeneous linear partial differential equations. Finally, an example is given.

Abstract:By establishing a new proper variational framework and using the critical point theory, we establish some new existence criteria to guarantee that the 2nth-order nonlinear difference equation containing both advance and retardation with p-Laplacian Delta(n)(r(t - n) Phi p(Delta(n)u(t - 1))) + q(t)Phi p (u(t)) = f (t,u(t + n),.,u(t),.,u(t - n)), n is an element of Z, has infinitely many homoclinic orbits, where Phi p(s) is p-Laplacian operator; Phi p(s) = |s|(p-2)s(1 < p < infinity) r, q, f are nonperiodic in t. Our conditions on the potential are rather relaxed, and some existing results in the literature are improved.

Abstract:We consider three classes of polynomial differential equations of the form (x) over dot = -y + P-n(x, y), (y) over dot = x + Q(n) (x, y), where P-n and Q(n) are homogeneous polynomials of degree n, having a non-Hamiltonian centre at the origin. By using a method different from the classical ones, we study the limit cycles that bifurcate from the periodic orbits of such centres when we perturb them inside the class of all polynomial differential systems of the above form. A more detailed study is made for the particular cases of degree n = 2 and n = 3.

Abstract:We address the Poincaré-Perron's classical problem of approximation for high order linear differential equations in the class of almost periodic type functions, extending the results for a second order linear differential equation in [23]. We obtain explicit formulae for solutions of these equations, for any fixed order $n\ge 3$, by studying a Riccati type equation associated with the logarithmic derivative of a solution. Moreover, we provide sufficient conditions to ensure the existence of a fundamental system of solutions. The fixed point Banach argument allows us to find almost periodic and asymptotically almost periodic solutions to this Riccati type equation. A decomposition property of the perturbations induces a decomposition on the Riccati type equation and its solutions. In particular, by using this decomposition we obtain asymptotically almost periodic and also $p$-almost periodic solutions to the Riccati type equation. We illustrate our results for a third order linear differential equation.

Abstract:This paper investigates the stability and L-2-gain problems for a class of continuous-time periodic piecewise linear systems with possibly non-Hurwitz subsystems. First, the exponential stability of periodic piecewise systems is studied by allowing the Lyapunov function to possibly non-monotonically decreasing over a period. A sufficient condition is established in terms of matrix inequalities. In light of the proposed Lyapunov function, the L-2-gain criterion is derived for periodic piecewise linear systems as well.

Abstract:Floquet's Theorem is a celebrated result in the theory of ordinary differential equations. Essentially, the theorem states that, when studying a linear differential system with $T$-periodic coefficients, we can apply a, possibly complex, $T$-periodic change of variables that transforms it into a linear system with constant coefficients. In this paper, we explore further the question of the nature of this change of variables. We state necessary and sufficient conditions for it to be real and $T$-periodic. Failing those conditions, we prove that we can still find a real change of variables that is "partially" $T$-periodic and "partially" $T$-antiperiodic. We also present applications of this new form of Floquet's Theorem to the study of the behavior of solutions of nonlinear differential systems near periodic orbits.

Abstract:Ordinary and partial differential equations with operators containing the p-Laplace operator, the so called ϕ-Laplace operator, operators with variable exponents and the double phase operators have been studied thoroughly for at least the last 20 years and the amount of papers dealing with these subjects is huge. In this paper we deal with the problem of the existence of periodic solutions to some system of ODE's involving a fairly general operator generalizing in this form corresponding results for the areas of research just mentioned. In our results neither the function generating the differential operator nor the right hand side function in the boundary value problem considered are necessarily equal to the gradient of a function. Our main result is a here is a continuation theorem based on the Leray-Schauder degree theory which allows us to obtain the existence of solutions for the boundary value problem considered.

Abstract:In this work, we first propose a concept of Weyl almost anti-periodic functions. Then, we make use of the contraction mapping principle and analysis techniques to research the existence of a unique Weyl almost anti-periodic solution to a neutral functional semilinear abstract differential equation. Finally, we give an example of a neutral functional partial differential equation to show the validity of the obtained results.

Abstract:In this article, we search for polynomial Lyapunov functions beyond the quadratic form to investigate the synchronization problems of nonlinearly coupled complex networks. First, with a relaxed assumption than the quadratic condition, a synchronization criterion is established for nonlinearly coupled networks with asymmetric coupling matrices. Compared with the existing synchronization criteria, our results are less conservative and have a wider application. Second, the synchronization problem for polynomial networks is characterized as the sum-of-squares (SOS) optimization one. In this way, polynomial Lyapunov functions can be obtained efficiently with SOS programming tools. Furthermore, it is shown that the local synchronization of certain nonpolynomial networks can also be analyzed by using the SOS optimization method through the Taylor series expansion. Finally, three numerical examples are presented to verify the effectiveness and less conservatism of our analytical results.

Abstract:Explicit computational formulas for coefficients of the periodic normal forms of the three most complex codim 2 bifurcations of limit cycles with dimension of the center manifold equal to 4 or to 5 in generic autonomous ODEs are derived. The resulting formulas are independent of the dimension of the phase space and involve solutions of certain boundary-value problems as well as multilinear functions from the Taylor expansion of the ODE right-hand side near the cycle. The formulas allow one to distinguish between the complicated bifurcation scenarios which can happen near these codim 2 bifurcations of limit cycles, where 3-tori and 4-tori can be present. We apply our techniques to the study of a known laser model, a novel model from population biology, and one for mechanical vibrations; these models exhibit Limit Point--Neimark-Sacker, Period-Doubling--Neimark-Sacker and double Neimark-Sacker bifurcations. Lyapunov exponents are computed to numerically confirm the results of the normal form analysis, in particular with respect to the existence of stable invariant tori of various dimensions and chaos.
