Abstract:We consider normal forms of real vector fields near periodic orbits and provide sufficient conditions for their smooth linearization. In addition, the main results also assert the existence of vertical local foliations, whose leaves are all transversal to the periodic orbit.

Abstract:The normal form theory for polynomial vector fields is extended to those for $C^\infty$ vector fields vanishing at the origin. Explicit formulas for the $C^\infty$ normal form and the near identity transformation which brings a vector field into its normal form are obtained by means of the renormalization group method. The dynamics of a given vector field such as the existence of invariant manifolds is investigated via its normal form. The $C^\infty$ normal form theory is applied to prove the existence of infinitely many periodic orbits of two dimensional systems which is not shown from polynomial normal forms.

Abstract:We consider the deformations of complex orbifolds with the underlying smooth structures being fixed. As a corollary, we can prove that the deformations of a Calabi-Yau orbifold is unobstructed by using standard arguments. Then we consider the period map for a family of complex Kähler orbifolds. We prove that the period map is holomorphic, horizontal and consistent with our Kodaira-Spencer map.

Abstract:Floquet's Theorem is a celebrated result in the theory of ordinary differential equations. Essentially, the theorem states that, when studying a linear differential system with $T$-periodic coefficients, we can apply a, possibly complex, $T$-periodic change of variables that transforms it into a linear system with constant coefficients. In this paper, we explore further the question of the nature of this change of variables. We state necessary and sufficient conditions for it to be real and $T$-periodic. Failing those conditions, we prove that we can still find a real change of variables that is "partially" $T$-periodic and "partially" $T$-antiperiodic. We also present applications of this new form of Floquet's Theorem to the study of the behavior of solutions of nonlinear differential systems near periodic orbits.

Abstract:We review a recent generalization of Normal Form Theory to systems (Hamiltonian ones or general ODEs) where the perturbing term is not periodic in one coordinate variable. The main difference with the standard case relies on the non uniqueness of the Normal Form and the total absence of the small divisors problem. The exposition is quite general, so as to allow extensions to the case of more non--periodic coordinates, and more functional settings. Here, for simplicity, we work in the real--analytic class.

Orbital normal forms for a class of three-dimensional systems with an application to Hopf-zero bifurcation analysis of Fitzhugh-Nagumo system

Abstract:We consider a class of three-dimensional systems having an equilibrium point at the origin, whose principal part is of the form (-Dy h(x, y), Dx h(x,y), f(x,y))^T . This principal part, which has zero divergence and does not depend on the third variable z, is the coupling of a planar Hamiltonian vector field Xh(x,y)=(-Dy h(x, y), Dx h(x,y))^T with a one-dimensional system. We analyze the quasi-homogeneous orbital normal forms for this kind of systems, by introducing a new splitting for quasi-homogeneous three-dimensional vector fields. The obtained results are applied to the nondegenerate Hopf-zero singularity that falls into this kind of systems. Beyond the Hopf-zero normal form, a parametric normal form is obtained, and the analytic expressions for the normal form coefficients are provided. Finally, the results are applied to a case of the three-dimensional Fitzhugh-Nagumo system.

Abstract:Stable Hamiltonian structures generalize contact forms and define a volume-preserving vector field known as the Reeb vector field. We study two aspects of Reeb vector fields defined by stable Hamiltonian structures on 3-manifolds: on one hand, we classify all the examples with finitely many periodic orbits under a non-degeneracy condition; on the other, we give sufficient conditions for the existence of a supporting broken book decomposition and for the existence of a Birkhoff section.

Abstract:Using the differential geometric control theory, we presented the necessary and sufficient conditions under which smooth affine nonlinear systems with single inputs are equivalent to, via state transformation, a given p-normal form. The presented verifiable conditions involve the vector fields obtained by some suitably chosen iterative Lie brackets of the vector fields which define the system. The proof is based on a new technique for applying the Frobenius Theorem in a more convenient way by converting a set of quasilinear partial differential equations with the same main portion to a set of homogeneous linear partial differential equations. Finally, an example is given.

Abstract:In this paper we will solve an open problem raised by Manásevich and Mawhin twenty years ago on the structure of the periodic eigenvalues of the vectorial $p$-Laplacian. This is an Euler-Lagrangian equation on the plane or in higher dimensional Euclidean spaces. The main result obtained is that for any exponent $p$ other than $2$, the vectorial $p$-Laplacian on the plane will admit infinitely many different sequences of periodic eigenvalues with a given period. These sequences of eigenvalues are constructed using the notion of scaling momenta we will introduce. The whole proof is based on the complete integrability of the equivalent Hamiltonian system, the tricky reduction to $2$-dimensional dynamical systems, and a number-theoretical distinguishing between different sequences of eigenvalues. Some numerical simulations to the new sequences of eigenvalues and eigenfunctions will be given. Several further conjectures towards to the panorama of the spectral sets will be imposed.

Abstract:We investigate global continuation of periodic orbits of a differential equation depending on a parameter, assuming that a closed 1-form satisfying certain properties exists. We begin by extending the global continuation theory of Alexander, Alligood, Mallet-Paret, Yorke, and others to this situation, formulating a new notion of global continuability and a new global continuation theorem tailored for this situation. In particular, we show that the existence of such a 1-form ensures that local continuability of periodic orbits implies global continuability. Using our general theory, we then develop continuation-based techniques for proving the existence of periodic orbits. In contrast to previous work, a key feature of our results is that existence of periodic orbits can be proven (i) without finding trapping regions for the dynamics and (ii) without establishing a priori upper bounds on the periods of orbits. We illustrate the theory in examples inspired by the synthetic biology literature.

A Birkhoff Normal Form Theorem for Partial Differential Equations on torus

Abstract:We prove an abstract Birkhoff normal form theorem for Hamiltonian partial differential equations on torus. The normal form is complete up to arbitrary finite order. The proof is based on a valid non-resonant condition and a suitable norm of Hamiltonian function. Then as two examples, we apply this theorem to nonlinear wave equation in one dimension and nonlinear Schrödinger equation in high dimension. Consequently, the polynomially long time stability is proved in Sobolev spaces $H^s$ with the index $s$ being much smaller than before. Further, by taking the iterative steps depending on the size of initial datum, we prove sub-exponentially long time stability for these two equations.

Abstract:This paper explores the simplest truncated orbital and parametric normal forms of controlled Hopf zero singularities. We assume a quadratic generic condition and complete the remaining results on their simplest truncated orbital and parametric normal forms of Hopf-zero singularities. Different normal form styles are explored for their potential applications in bifurcation control. We obtain their associated universal asymptotic unfolding normal forms. We derive coefficient normal form formulas of the most generic cases and present the relations between the controller coefficients and asymptotic universal unfolding parameters. These play an important role in their potential applications in bifurcation control. Finally, the results are implemented on a controlled Chua circuit system to illustrate the applicability of our results.

Abstract:In this paper, we deal with hypernormal forms of non-resonant double Hopf singularities. We investigate the infinite level normal form classification of such singularities with nonzero radial cubic part. We provide a normal form decomposition of normal form vector fields in terms of planar-rotating and planar-radial vector fields. These facilitate the pattern recognition and analysis of the corresponding generalized homological maps. This paper is the first instance of the normal form classification for generic non-resonant double Hopf singularities without structural symmetry.

Abstract:We studied piecewise smooth differential systems of the form $$\dot{z} = Z(z) = \dfrac{1 + \operatorname{sgn}(F)}{2}X(z) + \dfrac{1 - \operatorname{sgn}(F)}{2}Y(z),$$ where $F: \mathbb{R}^{n}\rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ is a smooth map having 0 as a regular value. We consider linear regularizations of the vector field $Z$ given by $$\dot{z}= Z_{\varepsilon}(z) = \dfrac{1 + \varphi(F/\varepsilon)}{2}X(z) +\dfrac{1 - \varphi(F /\varepsilon)}{2}Y(z),$$where $\varphi$ is a transition function (not necessarily monotonic) and nonlinear regularizations of the vector field $Z$ whose transition function is monotonic. It is a well-known fact that the regularized system is a slow-fast system. The main contribution of this paper is the study of typical singularities of slow-fast systems that arise from (linear or nonlinear) regularizations. We developed an algorithm to construct suitable transition functions, and we apply these ideas in order to create slow-fast singularities from normal forms of piecewise smooth vector fields. We present examples of transition functions that, after regularization of a PSVF normal form, generate normally hyperbolic, fold, transcritical, and pitchfork singularities.

Abstract:A differential 1-form $\alpha$ on a manifold of odd dimension $2n+1$, which satisfies the contact condition $\alpha \wedge (d\alpha)^n \neq 0$ almost everywhere, but which vanishes at a point $O$, i.e. $\alpha (O) = 0$, is called a \textit{singular contact form} at $O$. The aim of this paper is to study local normal forms (formal, analytic and smooth) of such singular contact forms. Our study leads naturally to the study of normal forms of singular primitive 1-forms of a symplectic form $\omega$ in dimension $2n$, i.e. differential 1-forms $\gamma$ which vanish at a point and such that $d\gamma = \omega$, and their corresponding conformal vector fields. Our results are an extension and improvement of previous results obtained by other authors, in particular Lychagin \cite{Lychagin-1stOrder1975}, Webster \cite{Webster-1stOrder1987} and Zhitomirskii \cite{Zhito-1Form1986,Zhito-1Form1992}. We make use of both the classical normalization techniques and the toric approach to the normalization problem for dynamical systems \cite{Zung_Birkhoff2005, Zung_Integrable2016, Zung_AA2018}.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to develop, for the first time, a general theory of simultaneous local normalisation of couples ( X , G ) , where X is a dynamical system (vector field) and G is an underlying geometric structure preserved by X, even if both have singularities. Such couples appear naturally in many problems, e.g. Hamiltonian dynamics, where G is a symplectic structure and one has the theory of Birkhoff normal forms, or constrained dynamics, where G is a smooth, in general singular, distribution of tangent subspaces, etc. In this paper, the geometric structure G is of the following types: volume form, symplectic form, contact form, Poisson tensor, as well as their singular versions. The paper addresses mainly the more difficult situations when both X and G are singular at a point and its results prove the existence of natural simultaneous normal forms in these cases. In general, the normalisation is only formal, but when G and X are (real or complex) analytic and X is analytically or Darboux integrable, then the simultaneous normalisation is also analytic. Our theory is based on a new approach, called the Toric Conservation Principle, as well as the classical step-by-step normalisation technique, and the equivariant path method.

Abstract:We prove a normal form theorem for principal Hamiltonian actions on Poisson manifolds around the zero locus of the moment map. The local model is the generalization to Poisson geometry of the classical minimal coupling construction from symplectic geometry of Sternberg and Weinstein. Further, we show that the result implies that the quotient Poisson manifold is linearizable, and we show how to extend the normal form to other values of the moment map.
