Abstract:Let N and M be two nests on real or complex Banach spaces X and Y, respectively, andΦbe an additive map between ideals AlgFN and ALGFM of finite rank operators in nest algebras AlgN and AlgM, of which the range contains all rank-1 nilpotent operators in AlgM. The authors show that ifΦis rank-1 nilpotency preserving in both directions, thenΦhas the form eitherΦ(x(?)f) = Ax(?)Cf for every rank-1 nilpotent operator x(?)AlgFN orΦ(x(?)f) = Af(?)Cx for every rank-1 nilpotent operator x(?)f∈AlgFN, where A and C are certainτ-linear operators with an automorphism r of the underlying field. Abstract:In this paper, we characterize rank-1 preserving linear maps between nest algebras acting on real or complex Banach spaces. As applications, we show that every weakly continuous and surjective local automorphism (or, anti-automorphism) on a nest algebra with an additional property is either an automorphism or an anti-automorphism; furthermore, every weakly continuous and surjective local inner automorphism on such nest algebras is in fact an inner automorphism.

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss the rank-1-preserving linear maps on nest algebras of Hilbert-space operators. We obtain several characterizations of such linear maps and apply them to show that a weakly continuous linear bijection on an atomic nest algebra is idempotent preserving if and only if it is a Jordan homomorphism, and in turn, if and only if it is an automorphism or an anti-automorphism.

We give some structure theorems for Φ to be rank-1 nilpotency preserving in both directions, and obtain particularly a characterization of such Φ if it is bounded and X and Y are Hilbert spaces with dimX⩾6.

Abstract:Let $ \mathcal{N} $ be a maximal atomic nest on Hilbert space H and $ \textrm{Alg}\mathcal{N} $denote the associated nest algebra. We prove that a weakly continuous andsurjective linear map $ \Phi\,:\,\textrm{Alg}\mathcal{N}\longrightarrow\textrm{Alg}\mathcal{N} $ preserves the closure of numericalrange if and only if there exists a unitary operator $ U\in\mathcal{B}(H) $ such that$ Phi(T) = UTU^{*} $ for every $ T\in\textrm{Alg}\mathcal{N} $ or $ \Phi(T) = UT^{tr}U^{*} $ for every $ T\in\textrm{Alg}\mathcal{N} $,where $ T^{tr} $ denotes the transpose of T relative to an arbitrary but fixed baseof H. As applications, we get the characterizations of the numerical rangeor numerical radius preservers on $ \textrm{Alg}\mathcal{N} $. The surjective linear maps on the diagonal algebras of atomic nest algebras preserving the closure of numerical range or preserving the numerical range (radius) are also characterized.

Abstract:Let A and B be standard operator algebras on infinite dimensional complex Banach spaces X and Y, respectively, and let Φ be an additive surjection from A onto B. We prove that if Φ is unital and preserves any one of (left, right) invertibility, (left, right) zero divisors, (left, right) topological divisors of zero, quasi-affinity, injectivity, surjectivity, range density, lower-boundedness and left (right) maximal ideals in both directions, then it has one of the following forms: isomorphism, conjugate isomorphism, anti-isomorphism and conjugate anti-isomorphism. We also show that Φ preserves zero products in both directions if and only if Φ is either an isomorphism or a conjugate isomorphism.

Abstract:In this paper, we obtain several characterizations of rank preserving linear maps and completely rank nonincreasing linear maps on upper triangular Hilbert space operator matrix algebras and apply them to get some algebraic results. We show that every automorphism of an upper triangular operator matrix algebra is inner and every weakly continuous surjective local automorphism is in fact an automorphism. A weakly continuous linear bijection on an upper triangular operator matrix algebra is idempotent preserving if and only if it is a Jordan homomorphism, and in turn, if and only if it is an automorphism or an anti-automorphism. As an application, we also obtain a result concerning the asymptotic joint-similarity of matrix tuples.

Abstract:In this paper, we give some characterisations of homomorphisms on von Neumann algebras by linear preservers. We prove that a bounded linear surjective map from a von Neumann algebra onto another is zero-product preserving if and only if it is a homomorphism multiplied by an invertible element in the centre of the image algebra. By introducing the notion of tr-rank of the elements in finite von Neumann algebras, we show that a unital linear map from a linear subspace ℳ of a finite von Neumann algebra ℛ into ℛ can be extended to an algebraic homomorphism from the subalgebra generated by ℳ into ℛ; and a unital self-adjoint linear map from a finite von Neumann algebra onto itself is completely tr-rank preserving if and only if it is a spatial *-automorphism.

Abstract:In this paper we address some basic questions of the Banach space structure of the nest algebras in the trace class; in particular, we study whether any two of them are isomorphic to each other, and show that the nest algebras in the trace class have bases. We construct three non-isomorphic examples of nest algebras in $c_1$; present a new proof of the primarity of $c_1$ (Arazy, [Ar1], [Ar2]), and prove that $K(H)$, and the nest algebras in $B(H)$ are primary.
