Abstract:Let F be a field of characteristic not 2 and T-n (F) the set of all nxn upper triangular matrices. A pair of matrices A and B are called rank commutative if rank(AB) = rank(BA). In this paper, surjective additive maps on T-n (F) preserving rank commutativity in both directions are characterized.

Abstract:Let x and y be two elements in an algebra.If x and y satisfy the algebraic relation xy=ξyx for some scalarξ,then x and y are commutative up to a factorξ.This paper first gives a characterization of unital additive surjections between standard operator algebras on real or complex Banach spaces which preserve commutativity up to a factor in both directions.A structure theorem for bounded linear surjections preserving commutativity up to a factor between C*-algebras is also obtained.

Abstract:In this paper, we show that a map $\delta$ over a triangular ring $\mathcal{T}$ satisfying $\delta(ab+ba)=\delta(a)b+a \tau(b)+\delta(b)a+b\tau(a)$, for all $a,b\in \mathcal{T}$ and for some maps $\tau$ over $\mathcal{T}$ satisfying $\tau(ab+ba)=\tau(a)b+a \tau(b)+\tau(b)a+b\tau(a)$, is additive. Also, it is shown that a map $T$ on $\mathcal{T}$ satisfying $T(ab)=T(a)b=aT(b)$, for all $a,b\in \mathcal{T}$, is additive. Further, we establish that if a map $D$ over $\mathcal{T}$ satisfies $(m+n)D(ab)=2mD(a)b+2naD(b)$, for all $a,b\in \mathcal{T}$ and integers $m,n\geq 1$, then $D$ is additive.

Abstract:Suppose F is an arbitrary field. Let |F| be the number of the elements of F. Let T n (F) be the space of all nxn upper-triangular matrices over F. A map Ψ: T N (F) → T N (F) is said to preserve idempotence if A - λ B is idempotent if and only if Ψ (A) - λΨ(B) is idempotent for any A, B ∈ T n (F) and λ ∈ F. It is shown that: when the characteristic of F is not 2, |F| > 3 and n ≥ 3, Ψ: T n (F) → T n (F) is a map preserving idempotence if and only if there exists an invertible matrix P τ T n (F) such that either ϕ (A) = PAP −1 for every A ∈ T n (F) or Ψ (A) = PJA t JP −1 for every A ∈ T n (F) , where J = ∑ n =1 n E i,n +1− i and E ij is the matrix with 1 in the (i,j)th entry and 0 elsewhere.

Abstract:Let m, n be integers such that 1 < m < n. Let R = M-n(D) be the ring of all n x n matrices over a division ring D, M an additive subgroup of R and G : R-m -> R an m-additive map. In this paper, under a mild technical assumption, we prove that delta(1)(x) = G(x, ... ,x) is an element of M for each rank-s matrix x is an element of R implies 81(x) is an element of M for each x is an element of R, where s is a fixed integer such that m < s < n, which has been considered for the case s = n in [Xu X, Zhu J., Central traces of multiadditive maps on invertible matrices, Linear Multilinear Algebra 2018; 66:1442-1448]. Also, an example is provided showing that the conclusion will not be true if s < m. As applications, we also extend the conclusions by Liu, Franca et al., Lee et al. and Beidar et al., respectively, to the case of rank-s matrices for m < s < n.

Abstract:Let T-n(F) denote the monoid of all upper triangular n x n matrices over a finite field F. It has been shown by Volkov and Goldberg that T-n(F) is nonfinitely based if vertical bar F vertical bar > 2 and n >= 4, but the cases when vertical bar F vertical bar > 2 and n = 2, 3 or when vertical bar F vertical bar = 2 have remained open. In this paper, it is shown that the monoid T-2(F) is finitely based when vertical bar F vertical bar = 2, and a finite identity basis for it is given. Moreover, all maximal subvarieties of the variety generated by T-2(F) with vertical bar F vertical bar = 2 are determined.

Abstract:Let F be a field. We investigate the greatest possible dimension t_n(F) for a vector space of n-by-n matrices with entries in F and in which every element is triangularizable over the ground field F. It is obvious that t_n(F) is greater than or equal to n(n+1)/2, and we prove that equality holds if and only if F is not quadratically closed or n=1, excluding finite fields with characteristic 2. If F is infinite and not quadratically closed, we give an explicit description of the solutions with the critical dimension t_n(F), reducing the problem to the one of deciding for which integers k between 2 and n all k-by-k symmetric matrices over F are triangularizable.

Abstract:Let n, m > 1 be integers, and letMn(K) be the ring of all nxn matrices over a field K with centre Z = KIn. Assume that G : Mn(K) m. Mn(K) is an m- additive map such that T (GLn(K)) = 0 (. Z), where T (x) = G(x, x,..., x) denotes the trace map of G and GLn(K) is the set of all n x n invertible matrices over K. Then T (Mn(K)) = 0 (. Z) if one of the followings holds: (1) char K = 0; (2) char K > m; (3) char K = m and | K| = m; (4) | K| = 2m. As applications, we give a slight improvement in the theorem by Franca and extend the condition from the prime ring Mn(K) to its nonadditive subset GLn(K) for the theorems by Lee et al. and Beidar et al.

Abstract:Let Mn(K) be the ring of all n×n matrices over a division ring K, and f be a multiplicative matrix function from Mn(K) to a multiplicative Abelian group with zero G∪{0} (f(AB)=f(A)f(B),∀A,B∈Mn(K)). We call an additive transformation ϕ on Mn(K) preserves a multiplicative matrix function f, if f(ϕ(A))=f(A),∀A∈Mn(K). In this paper, we characterize all additive surjective transformations on Mn(K) over any division ring K (chK≠2) that leave a non-trivial multiplicative matrix function invariant. Applications to several related preservers are considered.
