Abstract:In this paper, we characterize rank-1 preserving linear maps between nest algebras acting on real or complex Banach spaces. As applications, we show that every weakly continuous and surjective local automorphism (or, anti-automorphism) on a nest algebra with an additional property is either an automorphism or an anti-automorphism; furthermore, every weakly continuous and surjective local inner automorphism on such nest algebras is in fact an inner automorphism.

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss the rank-1-preserving linear maps on nest algebras of Hilbert-space operators. We obtain several characterizations of such linear maps and apply them to show that a weakly continuous linear bijection on an atomic nest algebra is idempotent preserving if and only if it is a Jordan homomorphism, and in turn, if and only if it is an automorphism or an anti-automorphism.

Abstract:Let N and M be two nests on Banach spaces X and Y, respectively, and let Φ be a linear map between nest algebras AlgN and AlgM of which the range contains all rank-1 nilpotent operators in AlgM. We give some structure theorems for Φ to be rank-1 nilpotency preserving in both directions, and obtain particularly a characterization of such Φ if it is bounded and X and Y are Hilbert spaces with dimX⩾6.

Abstract:Let $ \mathcal{N} $ be a maximal atomic nest on Hilbert space H and $ \textrm{Alg}\mathcal{N} $denote the associated nest algebra. We prove that a weakly continuous andsurjective linear map $ \Phi\,:\,\textrm{Alg}\mathcal{N}\longrightarrow\textrm{Alg}\mathcal{N} $ preserves the closure of numericalrange if and only if there exists a unitary operator $ U\in\mathcal{B}(H) $ such that$ Phi(T) = UTU^{*} $ for every $ T\in\textrm{Alg}\mathcal{N} $ or $ \Phi(T) = UT^{tr}U^{*} $ for every $ T\in\textrm{Alg}\mathcal{N} $,where $ T^{tr} $ denotes the transpose of T relative to an arbitrary but fixed baseof H. As applications, we get the characterizations of the numerical rangeor numerical radius preservers on $ \textrm{Alg}\mathcal{N} $. The surjective linear maps on the diagonal algebras of atomic nest algebras preserving the closure of numerical range or preserving the numerical range (radius) are also characterized.

Abstract:A nonlinear map φ between operator algebras is said to be a numerical radius isometry if w(φ(T−S))=w(T−S) for all T, S in its domain algebra, where w(T) stands for the numerical radius of T. Let N and M be two atomic nests on complex Hilbert spaces H and K, respectively. Denote AlgN the nest algebra associated with N and DN=AlgN∩(AlgN)∗ the diagonal algebra. Abstract:In this paper, we obtain several characterizations of rank preserving linear maps and completely rank nonincreasing linear maps on upper triangular Hilbert space operator matrix algebras and apply them to get some algebraic results. We show that every automorphism of an upper triangular operator matrix algebra is inner and every weakly continuous surjective local automorphism is in fact an automorphism. A weakly continuous linear bijection on an upper triangular operator matrix algebra is idempotent preserving if and only if it is a Jordan homomorphism, and in turn, if and only if it is an automorphism or an anti-automorphism. As an application, we also obtain a result concerning the asymptotic joint-similarity of matrix tuples.

Abstract:In this paper, we give some characterisations of homomorphisms on von Neumann algebras by linear preservers. We prove that a bounded linear surjective map from a von Neumann algebra onto another is zero-product preserving if and only if it is a homomorphism multiplied by an invertible element in the centre of the image algebra. By introducing the notion of tr-rank of the elements in finite von Neumann algebras, we show that a unital linear map from a linear subspace ℳ of a finite von Neumann algebra ℛ into ℛ can be extended to an algebraic homomorphism from the subalgebra generated by ℳ into ℛ; and a unital self-adjoint linear map from a finite von Neumann algebra onto itself is completely tr-rank preserving if and only if it is a spatial *-automorphism.

Abstract:In solar interior, it is the equilibrium velocity distribution of few high-energy protons and nuclei that participates in determining nuclear fusion reaction rates. So, it is inappropriate to use the Maxwellian velocity distribution to calculate the rates of solar nuclear fusion reactions. We have to use the relativistic equilibrium velocity distribution for the purpose. The nuclear fusion reaction rate based on the relativistic equilibrium velocity distribution has a reduction factor with respect to that based on the Maxwellian distribution. The reduction factor depends on the temperature, reduced mass and atomic numbers of the studied nuclear fusion reactions, in other words, it varies with the sort of neutrinos. Substituting the relativistic equilibrium velocity distribution for the Maxwellian distribution is not important for the calculation of solar sound speeds. The relativistic equilibrium velocity distribution, if adopted in standard solar models, will lower solar neutrino fluxes and change solar neutrino energy spectra but maintain solar sound speeds. This velocity distribution is possibly a solution to the solar neutrino problem.

Abstract:For a positive integer $n\geq 2$, let $M_{n}$ be the set of $n\times n$ complex matrices and $H_{n}$ the set of Hermitian matrices in $M_{n}$. We characterize injective linear maps ${\it\phi}:H_{m_{1}\cdots m_{l}}\rightarrow H_{n}$ satisfying $$\begin{eqnarray}\text{rank}(A_{1}\otimes \cdots \otimes A_{l})=1\Longrightarrow \text{rank}({\it\phi}(A_{1}\otimes \cdots \otimes A_{l}))=1\end{eqnarray}$$ for all $A_{k}\in H_{m_{k}}$, $k=1,\dots ,l$, where $l,m_{1},\dots ,m_{l}\geq 2$ are positive integers. The necessity of the injectivity assumption is shown. Moreover, the connection of the problem to quantum information science is mentioned.

Abstract:In this paper we address some basic questions of the Banach space structure of the nest algebras in the trace class; in particular, we study whether any two of them are isomorphic to each other, and show that the nest algebras in the trace class have bases. We construct three non-isomorphic examples of nest algebras in $c_1$; present a new proof of the primarity of $c_1$ (Arazy, [Ar1], [Ar2]), and prove that $K(H)$, and the nest algebras in $B(H)$ are primary.

Abstract:We show that every unital linear bijection which preserves the maximal left ideals from a semi-simple Banach algebra onto a C*-algebra of real rank zero is a Jordan isomorphism. Abstract:Let $\mathcal{M}$ and $\mathcal{N}$ be nests on separable Hilbert space. If the two nest algebras are distance less than 1 ($d(\mathcal{T}(\mathcal{M}),\mathcal{T}(\mathcal{N})) < 1$), then the nests are distance less than 1 ($d(\mathcal{M},\mathcal{N})<1$). If the nests are distance less than 1 apart, then the nest algebras are similar, i.e. there is an invertible $S$ such that $S\mathcal{M} = \mathcal{N}$, so that $S \mathcal{T}(\mathcal{M})S^{-1} = \mathcal{T}(\mathcal{N})$. However there are examples of nests closer than 1 for which the nest algebras are distance 1 apart.

Abstract:In this paper we investigate finite rank operators in the Jacobson radical $\mathcal{R}_{\mathcal{N} \otimes \mathcal{M}} $ of Alg($\mathcal{N} \otimes \mathcal{M}$), where $\mathcal{N}, \mathcal{M}$ are nests. Based on the concrete characterizations of rank one operators in Alg($\mathcal{N} \otimes \mathcal{M}$) and $\mathcal{R}_{\mathcal{N} \otimes \mathcal{M}} $, we obtain that each finite rank operator in $\mathcal{R}_{\mathcal{N} \otimes \mathcal{M}} $ can be written as a finite sum of rank one operators in $\mathcal{R}_{\mathcal{N} \otimes \mathcal{M}} $ and the weak closure of $\mathcal{R}_{\mathcal{N} \otimes \mathcal{M}} $ equals Alg($\mathcal{N} \otimes \mathcal{M}$) if and only if at least one of $\mathcal{N}, \mathcal{M}$ is continuous.
