Abstract:Rod-like nanocrystalline tin sulfides with different compositions and phases were obtained via simple ethanol thermal reactions between tin chlorides and thioacetamide at relatively low temperature (100°C for 10 h). It is found that solvents, reaction temperatures, and trace water in the system were important factors in obtaining one-dimensional nanocrystalline tin sulfides. The reaction mechanism has also been investigated.

Abstract:Nanoparticles of tin disulfide have been successfully prepared by the solvent–thermal synthesis method using different precursors. The X-ray powder diffraction patterns showed that the products were hexagonal SnS2 phase and transmission electron microscope images displayed that the samples were laminar particles with the average size of about 150nm. The Raman spectra showed a sharp peak at 311cm−1, which is characteristic of SnS2. The IR spectra determined the absence of tin oxides. In addition, the possible routes of the reactions were discussed.

Abstract:A simple ultrasonic method was developed to synthesize rod-like SnS nanocrystals, using tin chloride and thioacetamide as starting materials, ethanolamine and water as solvents. The as-obtained nanostructures were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) study, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry (UV). From the XRD pattern, the reflection peaks of the as-obtained samples can be indexed to the orthorhombic structure with lattice constants a = 3.99, b = 4.34, c = 11.20 angstrom, which are very consistent with the values in the standard card of SnS phase (JCPDS No. 39-0354). No characteristic peak was observed for other impurities such as SnO2 and SnS2, implying the formation of single-phase tin monosulfide. The quantification calculation shows the ratio of Sn/S to be 51.30/48.70 via the EDS analysis. These data clearly indicate that the as-prepared rod-like nanostructures are exactly SnS. TEM results show that, the SnS nanorods have length about 100nm and width less than 30nm. The direct and indirect band gaps of the SnS nanorods are determined to be 1.53 eV and 1.34 eV, respectively. The band gaps of the as-obtained SnS nanorods showed blue shifts due to the quantum size effects. The ultrasonic condition is believed to be critical for the formation of SnS with pure phase. For it provides the energy to form rod-like nanostructures and helps preventing the hydrolysis of Sn2+ to form tin oxides and hydrates. Also, it prevents oxidation of the final products.

Abstract:Lead sulfide (PbS) nanorods with a high aspect ratio were prepared by a novel thioglycolic acid assisted hydrothermal method. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy revealed that the product was rod-like PbS with cubic rock-salt structure. Further characterizations by selected area. electron diffraction and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy showed that the PbS nanorods were single crystalline in nature. Furthermore, the mechanism and critical factors for the hydrothermal synthesis of the nanorods have been discussed.

Abstract:This paper reports the large-scale synthesis of carbon-coated tin (Sn–C) nanorods through a facile solvothermal carbonization approach by using Sn nanorods as templates and ethanol as a solvent. The as-synthesized Sn–C nanorods have been applied as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries. The Sn–C anode, which exhibits relatively higher initial Coulombic efficiency and lithium storage capacities, is more attractive than the previously reported tin oxide or sulfide anodes. The superior performance of the Sn–C nanorods makes it a promising anode material in high-energy density batteries.

Abstract:A wide range of cadmium sulphide (CdS) 1-D nanocrystals were prepared using a novel polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)-assisted solvothermal method that employed ethylenediamine (en) as the solvent. X-ray diffraction (XRD) results shows that the nanorods are of hexagonal structure, and are further identified as single crystalline in selected area electron diffraction (SAED). The optical properties of CdS were characterized by optical absorption spectra and photoluminescence spectra. A series of experiments were carried out with different concentrations of PVP, and all the results confirm that the dosage of PVP is a vital factor in the morphology and optical properties of CdS. Moreover when the best dosage of 0.8 g/50 mL was used, continuous single-crystalline nanorods with regular and smooth morphology were obtained. The mechanism for the PVP-assisted solvothermal synthesis of CdS 1-D nanostructures was also investigated, and the reaction model of CdS/PVP was first presented.

Abstract:The solvothermal synthesis of titanium phosphides using sodium co-reduction of PCl3 and TiCl4 was discussed. It was found that the products were mainly hexagonal phase of TiP with a small fraction of TiP0.63. The analysis showed that the products consisted of nanorods and nanotubes at 300°C.

Abstract:Novel tin (II) sulfide (SnS) nanoflowers were successfully synthesized via a simple thioglycollic acid (TGA)-assisted hydrothermal process at 250 °C. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive spectrometry were employed to characterize the structure, morphology and chemical composition of the product, the results of which reveal that the product is composed of well crystallized orthorhombic SnS nanoflowers. The band gaps were obtained by analyzing UV-vis absorption spectrum; herein, the direct and indirect optical band gaps are 1.53 and 1.43 eV, respectively. Furthermore, we discussed critical factors (e.g., TGA, SnCl2/Na2S mol ratio of the reactants, hydrothermal temperature, and sulfur source) for hydrothermal formation of the SnS nanoflowers.

Abstract:Nanocrystalline β-SnS2 has been successfully prepared by the reaction between SnCl4 and anhydrous Na2S using a solvent–thermal method at 150°C, which is similar to the well-known hydrothermal process except that toluene is substituted for water. X-ray diffraction analysis indicates that the product is the β-SnS2 phase, and no Sn–O vibrations are found in the IR spectra. Transmission electron microscopy shows that the average particle size is about 12nm.

Abstract:Porous SnO2 and SnO2-Eu3+ nanorods have been facilely prepared using triphenyltin hydroxide microrods as precursors. The porous structure of SnO2 nanorods, which was aggregated by small SnO2 nanocrystallites, has been confirmed by TEM images and nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms. The optical property of the porous SnO2-Eu3+ nanorods was investigated by UV-vis absorption and photoluminescence spectra.

Abstract:A novel solvothermal method has been successfully developed to obtain nanocrystalline Sn4P3 in an autoclave based on the reaction of SnCl2 · 2H2O with yellow phosphorus at 160°C for 10 h, with potassium borohydride (KBH4) used as the reducing agent and ethanol as the solvent. XRD, TEM, and XPS examinations investigated the phase, grain size, morphology, and purity of the product, respectively. The product is spherical nanocrystalline Sn4P3 with a hexagonal structure. Potassium borohydride and ethanol played important roles in the formation of nanocrystalline Sn4P3. A possible mechanism is proposed as: under the solvothermal condition, Sn2+ was steadily reduced by KBH4 to atomic Sn; subsequently these newborn active atoms homogeneously combined with yellow phosphorus to form nanocrystalline Sn4P3.

Abstract:Single-crystal SnO2 nanorods with tunable diameters and lengths, ∼42×197, ∼5.5×19.3 and ∼4.5×39.1 nm, have been synthesized through a simple hydrothermal process, using a mixture of water/ethanol (1:1 in volume), a mixture of water/ethanol (1:1 in volume) with cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide, and pure ethanol as reaction media, respectively. X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, UV–Visible spectroscopy and other techniques were used to characterize the nanorods. The as-synthesized SnO2 nanorods exhibit preferential growth along the [001] direction. The related mechanisms of the oriented growth and dimensional tunableness are discussed.

Abstract:InP hollow nanospheres with an average size of 550 nm and shell thickness of about 110 nm were solvothermally synthesized in EA (ethanolamine)-H2O binary solution at 190 degrees C for 36 h. The shells of InP hollow nanospheres were composed of small nanoparticles. The similar route has been extended to prepare Cd3P2, Cu3P and Sn4P3 hollow nanospheres in 150-190 degrees C for 24-36 h.

Abstract:By using a novel method denoted the "Scission- template- transportation" route, CdIn2S4 nanorods with stoichiometric composition and high quality can be prepared in an ethylenediamine- ethanol mixed solvent at a relatively low temperature. Transmission electron microscopy images showed that the product from the 1 : 1 mixed solvent was rod- like with an average size of 25 x 700 nm. Ethylenediamine serves as the nucleophile for the formation of the inorganic [Cd2S2] core by scission of the thione groups of cadmium bis( diethyldithiocarbanate) [Cd(DDTC)(2)](2) while ethanol acts as the transportation reagent for InCl3 in the process. These factors are both conducive to the growth of CdIn2S4 nanorods. The reaction proceeds through one- dimensional [CdS](n) clusters, which act as intermediate templates for the subsequent growth of CdIn2S4 nanorods. Through adjusting the ethylenediamine : ethanol ratio, the size of the CdIn2S4 nanorods can be easily controlled. The products were also investigated by X- ray powder diffraction, X- ray photoelectron spectroscopy and ICP elemental analysis.

Abstract:NiE2 (E = Se, Te) nanorods were directly synthesized through the reaction of NiCl2 and selenium or tellurium in an autoclave at 160 ∼ 180°C for 10 ∼ 15 h, using ethylenediamine as a solvent. X-ray powder diffraction patterns and transmission electron microscope images show that the products are cubic NiSe2 and hexagonal NiTe2 phase, respectively, in the form of well-crystallized nanorods. A possible mechanism of the formation of NiE2 nanorods in the solvothermal process is proposed. The solvent ethylenediamine plays an important role in the formation of NiE2 nanorods.

Abstract:Rod-like PbS nanocrystals were synthesized via a novel biphasic solvothermal interface reaction route at 140–160°C. The as-prepared nanorods have diameters of 30–160nm and lengths of up to several micrometers, which yield typical aspect ratios of 10–70. The possible mechanism is briefly discussed for the growth of the rod-shaped PbS nanocrystals. The observations of transmission electron microscopy are in good agreement with the proposed template-aggregation-growth mechanism for PbS nanorods.

Abstract:A high yield of tin oxide (SnO2) nanorods was obtained via annealing a nanoscale precursor in the molten salt flux and surfactant. X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, selected area electron diffraction and infrared spectroscopy showed that the nanorods are composed of SnO2 with rutile structure. The surfactant and temperature have a profound influence on the production of SnO2 nanorods.

Abstract:Nanocrystalline tin(IV) sulfide (SnS2) with diverse morphologies were controllably synthesized using organic additives, such as cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (C(16)TAB), sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), p-benzenedicarboxylic acid in ethanol solution under mild reaction conditions. By adjusting the type and concentration of the organic additives, different nanostructured SnS2 were prepared including flower-like, fiber-, layer-rolled and sheet-like forms. Some other factors on the morphology, size and crystallization of the prepared SnS2 nanostructures were also investigated, including reaction time and temperature. Various techniques were applied to characterize the prepared SnS2 nanostructures including Xray diffraction, Transmission Electron Microscopy and UV-Vis spectroscopy. The trace water or hydration water of SnCl4 center dot 5H(2)O brings no impurities in ethanol solution despite tin(IV) ions are easy to hydrolyze, and the pure-phase SnS2 can be synthesized successfully. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) shows that the amount of the passivated additive C(16)TAB molecule within SnS2 is about 6.4 wt.% when the initial molar ratio of C(16)TAB to Sn4+ is 1:1. This method avoids hydrolyzing and expands the application range of tin salts containing hydration water in synthesizing pure-phase nanocrystalline tin(IV) sulfide. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V.
