Universal Self-Similar Attractor in the Bending-Driven Leveling of Thin Viscous Films

Abstract:We study theoretically and numerically the bending-driven leveling of thin viscous films within the lubrication approximation. We derive the Green's function of the linearized thin-film equation and further show that it represents a universal self-similar attractor at long times. As such, the rescaled perturbation of the film profile converges in time towards the rescaled Green's function, for any summable initial perturbation profile. In addition, for stepped axisymmetric initial conditions, we demonstrate the existence of another, short-term and one-dimensional-like self-similar regime. Besides, we characterize the convergence time towards the long-term universal attractor in terms of the relevant physical and geometrical parameters, and provide the local hydrodynamic fields and global elastic energy in the universal regime as functions of time. Finally, we extend our analysis to the non-linear thin-film equation through numerical simulations.

Abstract:For a set of non-periodic boundary conditions, we prove the uniform boundedness of the H2$$H^2$$ norms of the solutions of the 3D Primitive Equations with viscosity. An absorbing set of the solutions in H2$$H^2$$ is also obtained. As an application of this result, we prove also the finiteness of the Hausdorff and fractal dimensions of the global attractor for the strong solutions of the 3D Primitive Equations with viscosity. Our results also improve the existing results for the case with periodic boundary conditions.

Abstract:The set of nonzero external forces for which the zero function is in the global attractor of the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations is shown to be meagre in a Frechet topology. A criterion in terms of a Taylor expansion in complex time is used to characterize the forces in this set. This leads to several relations between certain Gevrey subclasses of C-infinity and a new upper bound for a Gevrey norm of solutions in the attractor, valid in the strip of analyticity in time.

Abstract:We consider a fourth order degenerate equation describing thin films over an inclined plane in this paper. A new approximating problem is introduced in order to obtain the local energy estimate of the solution. Based on combined use of local entropy estimate, local energy estimate and the suitable extensions of Stampacchia's Lemma to systems, we obtain the finite speed of propagation property of strong solutions, which has been known for the case of strong slippage n < 2, in the case of weak slippage 2 <= n < 3. The long time behavior of positive classical solutions is also discussed. We apply the entropy dissipation method to quantify the explicit rate of convergence in the L-infinity norm of the solution, and this improves and extends the previous results.

Abstract:In this article, the 3D Voigt-regularized Magnetohydrodynamic equations are considered, for which it is unknown if the uniqueness of weak solution exists. First, we prove that the uniform global attractor exists by constructing an evolutionary system. Then singular limits of this system are established. Namely, when a certain regularization parameter disappears, the convergence of global attractors is shown between the 3D autonomous Voigt-regularized Magnetohydrodynamic equations and Magnetohydrodynamic equations.

Abstract:n initial boundary value problem of the semilinear wave equation of which the source term f(x,u) is without variational structure in a bounded domain is considered. Firstly, we prove that it has a unique globally weak solution (u,u_t)∈ C^0([0,∞), H_0^1(Ω )× L^2(Ω)) by using our previous results (Pan et al. in Bound. Value Probl. 2012:42, 2012). Secondly, we obtain the existence of global attractors in H_0^1(Ω)× L^2(Ω) by using the ω -limit compactness condition (Ma et al. in Indiana Univ. Math. J. 5(6):1542-1558, 2002), rather than the traditional method.

Abstract:In this short note, we consider the long-time behavior for the solution of weakly damped wave equation with lower regular forcing. The existence of a global attractor is obtained. To verify asymptotic compactness of the semigroup, we present a new method about decomposition of the solution and apply the Strichartz estimate to the wave equation according to the recent progress. Moreover, translational regularity of the attractor is established.

Abstract:Global dynamics of the diffusive and partly diffusive Hindmarsh-Rose equations on a three-dimensional bounded domain originated in neurodynamics are investigated in this paper. The existence of global attractors as well as the regularity are proved through various uniform estimates showing the dissipative properties and the asymptotically compact characteristics, especially for the partly diffusive Hindmarsh-Rose equations by means of the Kolmogorov-Riesz theorem.

Abstract:Steady states of the thin film equation $u_t+[u^3 (u_xxx + \alpha^2 u_x -\sin(x) )]_x=0$ are considered on the periodic domain $\Omega = (-\pi,\pi)$. The equation defines a generalized gradient flow for an energy functional that controls the $H^1$-norm. The main result establishes that there exists for each given mass a unique nonnegative function of minimal energy. This minimizer is symmetric decreasing about $x=0$. For $\alpha<1$ there is a critical value for the mass at which the minimizer has a touchdown zero. If the mass exceeds this value, the minimizer is strictly positive. Otherwise, it is supported on a proper subinterval of the domain and meets the dry region at zero contact angle. A second result explores the relation between strict positivity and exponential convergence for steady states. It is shown that positive minimizers are locally exponentially attractive, while the distance from a steady state with a dry region cannot decay faster than a power law.

Abstract:Consider the thin-film equation h t + ( h h y y y ) y = 0 with a zero contact angle at the free boundary, that is, at the triple junction where liquid, gas, and solid meet. Previous results on stability and well-posedness of this equation have focused on perturbations of equilibrium-stationary or self-similar profiles, the latter eventually wetting the whole surface. These solutions have their counterparts for the second-order porous-medium equation h t − ( h m ) y y = 0 , where m > 1 is a free parameter. Both porous-medium and thin-film equation degenerate as h ↘ 0 , but the porous-medium equation additionally fulfills a comparison principle while the thin-film equation does not. In this note, we consider traveling waves h = V 6 x 3 + ν x 2 for x ≥ 0 , where x = y − V t and V , ν ≥ 0 are free parameters. These traveling waves are receding and therefore describe de-wetting, a phenomenon genuinely linked to the fourth-order nature of the thin-film equation and not encountered in the porous-medium case as it violates the comparison principle. The linear stability analysis leads to a linear fourth-order degenerate-parabolic operator for which we prove maximal-regularity estimates to arbitrary orders of the expansion in x in a right-neighborhood of the contact line x = 0 . This leads to a well-posedness and stability result for the corresponding nonlinear equation. As the linearized evolution has different scaling as x ↘ 0 and x → ∞ , the analysis is more intricate than in related previous works. We anticipate that our approach is a natural step towards investigating other situations in which the comparison principle is violated, such as droplet rupture.

Existence and dimensions of global attractors for a delayed reaction-diffusion equation on an unbounded domain

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to investigate the existence and Hausdorff dimension as well as fractal dimension of global attractors for a delayed reaction-diffusion equation on an unbounded domain. The noncompactness of the domain causes the Laplace operator has a continuous spectrum, the semigroup generated by the linear part and the Sobolev embeddings are no longer compact, making the problem more difficult compared with the equations on bounded domains. We first obtain the existence of an absorbing set for the infinite dimensional dynamical system generated by the equation by a priori estimate of the solutions. Then, we show the asymptotic compactness of the solution semiflow by an uniform a priori estimates for far-field values of solutions together with the Arzelà-Ascoli theorem, which facilitates us to show the existence of global attractors. By decomposing the solution into three parts and establishing a squeezing property of each part, we obtain the explicit upper estimation of both Hausdorff and fractal dimension of the global attractors, which only depend on the inner characteristic of the equation, while not related to the entropy number compared with the existing literature.

Global attractor and robust exponential attractors for some classes of fourth-order nonlinear evolution equations

Abstract:We study the long-time behaviour of solutions to some classes of fourth-order nonlinear PDEs with non-monotone nonlinearities, which include the Landau--Lifshitz--Baryakhtar (LLBar) equation (with all relevant fields and spin torques) and the convective Cahn--Hilliard/Allen--Cahn (CH-AC) equation with a proliferation term, in dimensions $d=1,2,3$. Firstly, we show the global well-posedness, as well as the existence of global and exponential attractors with finite fractal dimensions for these problems. In the case of the exchange-dominated LLBar equation and the CH-AC equation without convection, an estimate for the rate of convergence of the solution to the corresponding stationary state is given. Finally, we show the existence of a robust family of exponential attractors when $d\leq 2$. As a corollary, exponential attractor of the LLBar equation is shown to converge to that of the Landau--Lifshitz--Bloch equation in the limit of vanishing exchange damping, while exponential attractor of the convective CH-AC equation is shown to converge to that of the convective Allen--Cahn equation in the limit of vanishing diffusion coefficient.

Abstract:We consider the initial boundary value problem of Landau-Lifshitz-Bloch equation on three-dimensional ferromagnetic films, where the effective field contains the stray field controlled by Maxwell equation and the exchange field contains exchange constant. In this paper, we establish the existence of weak solutions of the equation by using the Faedo-Galerkin approximation method. We also derive its two-dimensional limit equation in a mathematically rigorous way when the film thickness tends to zero under appropriate compactness conditions. Moreover, we obtain an equation that can better describe the magnetic dynamic behavior of ferromagnetic films with negligible thickness at high temperature.
