Abstract:This essay explores numerous and complicated naturalized epistemology against the background of pragmatism. We distinguish three programmes of naturalized epistemology: strong, moderate, and weak. By considering commitments of pragmatism on which different programmes depend, we point out the close-knit relationship between pragmatism and naturalized epistemology. We also illustrate the essential origin of today s controversy over naturalized epistemology and predict the uptrend of naturalized epistemology.

Abstract:The life ethics of Confucianism focuses on “sheng sheng”（unceasing production and reproduction） and there are three reasons: firstly, it provides a new interpretation of the moral ontology, incorporating time and space factors and breaking the traditional view that the moral ontology remains unchanging, which is called “the sheng sheng of the moral ontology”. Secondly, based on a trichotomy, it divides the common moral ontology into two parts: benevolence and intelligence. The interaction between these two parts is a constantly flowing process and this is the “sheng sheng of moral process”. Thirdly, it re-examines the relationship between heaven and humans, no longer using heaven to discuss human, but using human to discuss heaven, no longer discussing heaven as endowing morality to humans, but discussing humans to give morality to heaven. Human being has a temporal nature and the interaction between heaven and man has taken on a new look, which is the “sheng sheng of the relationship between heaven and human”. These changes have profound implications and indicate that the paradigm of Confucianism is likely to undergo fundamental changes.

Abstract:Both the famous thinker Mou Zongsan and the historian Yu Yingshi believe that the uniqueness of Confucianism lies in its "internal transcendence," which is fundamentally different from the "external transcendence" of Christianity.If we analyze this statement,we see that it arose from the religious and political pressures placed on Confucianism by Christianity.Traditional Confucianism does not pursue transcendence either in the religious or in the ontological-epistemological sense.In contrast to the religious transcendence that highlights the relationship between God and man and the ontological-epistemological transcendence that emphasizes the transcendental-experiential structure,Confucianism is an ethical system that attaches great importance to the cultivation of virtue and enhancement of the human realm.In the modern context,it would seem unnecessary to cite the religious nature of Confucianism in defense of Confucian values.However,in terms of the psycho-social order essential to a socio-political community,Confucianism stresses orderly arrangements based on moral beliefs.In this way,Confucianism plays a similar role to Christianity in satisfying the people and strengthening social cohesion.

Abstract:Abstract Humanistic and ethical thought existed in China already in the ancient culture period, and was strongly enhanced during the Spring and Autumn era. Based on this background and foundation, Confucius is ‘a creator of the paradigm’ of Chinese philosophy, and Lao-Tzu is ‘an original metaphysician,’ both establishing the basic tendencies of Chinese philosophy. After that, the philosophies of pre- and post-Qin eras, all continued to develop along their thought. Chinese philosophy has several characteristics, including the unity of nature and man, truth and goodness, cognition and behavior, ontology and cosmology, humanity and natural law, the theory of human nature and values and many others. Its theoretic framework and basic structure aims to enlighten what humans ought to be - a question at the core of Chinese culture, reflecting the national spirit. The Chinese spirit is paradigmatically expressed in two sayings, “as Heaven’s movement is ever vigorous, so must a gentleman ceaselessly strive,” and “as Earth is broad and profound, so must a gentleman be greatly virtuous and lenient.”

Abstract:This article offers a synthetic characterization of Chinese philosophy based on an analytical reconstruction of its main traditions and thinking. Three main traditions in Chinese philosophy, Confucianism, Taoism and Chinese Buddhism, are depicted and discussed, together with some comments on Chinese Marxism in the contemporary scene. Four characteristics of Chinese philosophy are presented: intrinsic humanism, concrete rationalism, organic naturalism, and a pragmatism of self‐cultivation. It is clear from the discussion that these four characteristics are interrelated and mutually supporting and thus should be better understood in the context of one another. Many open problems of philosophy, such as transcendence, evil, logic, and theoretical knowledge, are raised by an inquiry into Chinese philosophy. If Chinese philosophy serves to make us critically aware of these problems and to provide alternative ways of thinking, we are more than justified in presenting Chinese philosophy as a philosophy of universal concern and universal significance.

Abstract:The essay pays attention to an argument of cultural ecologism concerning the Neo-Confucian life-spirit and its sustainable horizon of unifying human nature and mandate, especially focusing upon Zhang-zai's model of qi doctrine. The keyword is “cultural ecologism” in which the principle of life and the value of morality are integrated in the grand stream of the life spirit of universe. Stemming from a reciprocal unity of ecology and culture, it can be characteristic of a conceptual framework as the organic structure of culture circumstances. For Neo-Confucianists, the reality of world is in the steam of myriad things under heaven and on earth. It is a coherent whole with a certain origin and unitary processes in the ecological circle of Nature. The process of maintaining the sustainability of culture within this world view can be approached from the holistic unity of “one force and its multiple manifestations.” It works implicitly as the basis for positing a unified total system to share a common way of thinking within the Neo-Confucian culture. Zhang-zai presents the doctrine of qi ontology as “one vital force and its many manifestations” to identically unify the Heavenly and the Humane. All the things of the world naturally form types with each other according to their apportionment of one yin and one yang. In their concrete manifestations, according to the thinking way of bentilun, things may have multiple distinctions and perform many different roles, but the principle remains unitary in that their differences are reciprocally related within a unifying system. This world view is closely associated with the process of sustainably cultivating the human virtue in operations of Confucian cultural ecologism. He incessantly seeks to institutionalize the moral canon of classical Confucianism on the triple line, namely, an identification of yiwuliangti, a succession of minbaowuyu, and an extension of xingmingheyi, which make a unity of coherence, interconnectedness and wholeness. As cultural beings with beliefs and values, human beings live their lives in complicated social networks. Consequently, the ecologismic concept of culture preserves as an open horizon of coexistence and cooperation for newly emergent order within an integral relationship of person and community.
Dispute of ″Jinwen″ and ″Guwen″ and Orientation of Confucianism under the Background of ″National Calamity″

Abstract:In the Late Qing and the Republic of China,scholars had developed different paths in transforming traditional academics and bridging Sino-Western and old-new in the context of the evolution of Classical Studies and Historiography.Two distinct schools of Confucianism came into being in the Republic of China: one was the historical ″Guwen″ represented by Zhang Taiyan and his students,the other was the philosophic Jinwen represented by Liaoping and his students.With the aggravation of the National Calamity in the 1930s and revival of Confucianism,it was a common practice to promote Chinese culture and national spirits.Thus the transformation and practice of Confucianism became the focus in the discussion between the two different schools.During the dispute Meng Wentong and Li Yuancheng,Liao Ping's students,argued with Zhang Taiyan and Huang Kan constantly about sinology and Neo-Confucianism,″Jinwen″ and ″Guwen,″ and ″Classical Studies″ and ″Historiography″ to clarify the origin and development of Confucian philosophy. After a careful study of Qing's academic history and looking into the relations between Dai Zhen's philosophy and Xun Zi,Zhang Taiyan emphasized the unique significance of Dai Zhen in Qing's Academic history.On the contrary,Meng Wentong and Li Yuancheng resorted to traditional sinology and Confucian theories to question the construction of Dai Zhen's theory.Based on the examination of Examine Goodness,Li Yuancheng criticized Dai Zhen's doctrine of Ethics,Desire and Goodness as a misunderstanding of Mencius.Based on Guwen and centreing around the separation of Confucianism and Buddhism,Zhang Taiyan stressed the reliability of the historical account of the Six Classics to respond to the Skeptical School and illustrated the ideological and cultural tradition of China in the past two thousand years.Li Yuancheng had developed Liao Ping's theory and discussed with Zhang Taiyan the Rites and Spring and Autumn aiming to link ″Jinwen″ and ″Guwen″ and to reiterate the Great Righteousness of Spring and Autumn.Meng Wentong,through his study of the development of Confucian philosophy in Zhou dynasty,Qin dynasty and the two Han dynasties,attempted to find the succession of Confucianism and Mencius's thoughts,to analyze the philosophy of ″humanity and destiny,″ to interpret the controversies over Mencius and Xun Zi,to clarify the origin of sinology,and to challenge Cheng Zhu Confucian Orthodoxy.In short,Liao Ping's students had constructed a Confucian system based on the ″Goodness″ of Mencius,theoretically paving the way for for Jinwen and Confucian historiography. The school of Zhang Taiyan-Huang Kan purported to explore the development of national cultures,focused on the language and history,and advocated the cultivation of mind and behavior.Thus,it had associated moral ethics with political and social pragmaticism and had started the practical academics of Classical Studies and Historiography.In contrast,Liao Ping's students emphasized on constructing an dynamic interaction between the meanings of Classics,institution,and historical facts,carrying forward the ″New Confucianism of Qin and Han,″ and elucidating the revolutionary spirit of Jinwen and system design.Dispute of ″Jinwen″ and ″Guwen″ manifested the core difference of the academic interests between the schools of Zhang Taiyan-Huang Kan and Liao Ping's students.A clarification of their differences and disputes is of importance in interpreting the diversification of modern Confucianism and providing intellectual resources for the building of a nation-state or a civilization-state.

Abstract:Neo-Confucianism’s understanding of the relationship between heaven and man greatly reflects their view of nature and their aesthetic pursuits. Confucianism revolves around the perfection of human virtue, and the profundity of its theory of the relationship between heaven and humanity lies in the recognition of the value of all natural things. Therefore, the Confucian view of nature and humans emphasises the Unity of Heaven and Man by virtue. The concept of ‘the Unity of Heaven and Man by virtue’ unfolds the characteristic of symbiosis between humans and all things, which is manifested by the natural view of oneness of all things. The virtue of Sheng reflects the natural aesthetic consciousness of Confucianism. In Confucianism, virtue and beauty are unified, and this characteristic is mainly manifested as the beauty of ShengSheng. Sheng is not only a kind of great virtue but also a kind of great beauty, and the idea of the beauty of ShengSheng embodies the Confucian pursuit of the beauty of natural life.Contribution: This article mainly examines the relationship between humans and heaven in Neo-Confucianism. In particular, it focusses on the thought of ‘the Unity of Heaven and Man’, and analyses the natural aesthetic influence of this thought.

Abstract:The"Dao"in Zhuangzi's philosophy exists both in the noumenon world and the experience world,leading to the division of Dao in the two worlds,one being"Truth of Dao",the other"Qi of Dao".The division is then introduced to his opinion on human nature,hence the division of human nature,one being"Truth of Human Nature",the other"Qi of Human Nature".Human inner conflicts result from the restrictions and struggle between the two.In Fisherman,Zhuangzi expresses his thought of"Being Natural and True"to resolve the conflict from the perspectives of noumenon and experience.It is a model of human nature,in which"Truth of Human Nature"and"Qi of Human Nature"can favorably interact with each other.Also,people living the experience world can become a True man of Dao.Ultimately,human beings return to"Dao"in terms of human nature and life,making Zhuangzi's philosophy complete.

The papers in this issue offer a glimpse of some notable scholarly views in recent discussions on the religious properties of Confucianism and the possibility of the religious transformation of Confucianism. Abstract:The twentieth-century New Confucians,in their efforts to revive,is focused on its mental and moral(xinxing)aspects.The problem of this focus is twofold.On the one hand,they preserve too much of Confucianism by upholding it as the one and only moral principle in an already pluralistic society.On the other hand,they yield too much ground to the West in that they fully accept the superiority of Western science and democracy.I want to argue for a new focus on the political dimension of Confucianism.Among those who have attended to this focus,I will be critical of Jiang Qing for the following reasons.He,too,upholds the transcendence and universality of Confucian moral principle.His political idea is based upon a situational version of Confucianism(offered by gongyang scholars in the Han Dynasty) which was specifically designed for the time in which it occurred,and he takes this version as fundamental to Confucianism,and dogmatizes it,and makes it sacred.His and some others'efforts assume a culture-specific point of view,thus depriving Confucian political thinking of its universal appeal.I wish to argue that what we should preserve is the philosophical spirit of Confucianism,and we should develop a new Confucian political theory that takes into account the new situations of contemporary world and the political problems that are facing all modern states.By doing so,we can develop a new mission from the old state,rather than imposing the old mission on a new state.

Abstract:About 60 years ago, Tang Junyi 唐君毅 (Tang Chun-i), Mou Zongsan 牟宗三 (Mou Tsung-san), Xu Fuguan 徐復觀 (Hsu Fu-kuan), and Zhang Junmai 張君勱 (Carson Chang) published "A Manifesto for a Reappraisal of Sinology and Reconstruction of Chinese Culture." In the Manifesto, these major representatives of contemporary New Confucianism tried to rectify Westerners' biases and reestablish Chinese people's cultural confidence by upholding the Confucian learning of the heart-mind as the core of Chinese culture. Following the same approach, some prominent scholars today continue the effort of bringing Confucianism to a new epoch through reappropriating metaphysical theories of the heart-mind and human nature of the Zisi 子思–Mencius lineage, which flourished in the Song-Ming 宋明 period. This article critically reflects on this approach and argues that the Confucian learning of the heart-mind and human nature should not be taken so much as a mirror that reflects metaphysical reality than as a lever that directs and uplifts human vision and gongfu 功夫/工夫 (the art of life). In the cultural context today, revealing the gongfu nature of Confucianism can help us appreciate the real value of Confucianism as a constructive resource for global culture.

Abstract:He Lin discussed Confucian in the background of confluence of Chinese philosophy and western philosophy, and he believed that developing the thoughts of Confucian needed the three ways: philosophic way, artistic way, and religious way. The paper would research one way of them——religious way. The ethics of Confucian which was the main body of Chinese cultures was replenished by the thought of Christianity which was the main body of western cultures. At last, He Lin held that religion is the substance of morality, morality is the manifestation of religion,and he transformed the traditional ethics of China in religious way.

Abstract:In Chinese history of esthetics, the consciousness of natural things is always an important topic. This paper puts forward two points. Firstly, the “natural” nature by Zhuangzi falls into the realm of spirit. It isn't the equal of natural things. So the philosophy of Zhuangzi did not directly lead to the consciousness of natural things. Secondly, Guo Xiang thought the present being is independent and self-sufficient. The meaning comes from itself. Esthetically speaking, this idea gets the perceptual experience out of the domination of Taoism and Confucianism, and has direct influence upon the consciousness of natural things in Chinese esthetics.

Abstract:Mengzi’s theory of human nature is one of the most fascinating narratives in traditional Chinese intellectual history. His arguments are ambitious, have moral power, and contains philosophical implications. Mengzi made use of metaphors and analogies such as water, plants, and dogs to illustrate his ideas and theory of human nature vividly. All of these helped him to compete with the ideas of others such as Gaozi and SHI Shuo. Many ideas of his still play an important role in the daily life of Chinese people, and billions of people use and sing slogans quoted from Mengzi without being aware of it. Different theories have also been developed based on Mengzi’s theory, such as “human nature is originally good” and “human nature tends toward goodness.” We will explore the philosophical and historical aspects of Mengzi’s theory of human nature. Kongzi (Confucius) did not say directly what human nature exactly is, and it was Mengzi who laid the milestone for the Confucian theory of human nature and henceforth provided a new horizon for the Chinese theory of human nature.
