Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To analyze the effect of different silane coupling agents on the resin bond durability of glass-infiltrated alumina ceramic. Methods A glass-infiltrated alumina ceramic was silanized or not by three silane coupling agents. The treated ceramic surfaces were bonded with two resin cements. Their micro-bond strength were measured after 0, 30,000 thermal cycles.RESULTS:Before thermal cycling, resin cement A had lowest bond strength to ceramic, and ceramic treated by silane coupling agent A with two cements had lower bond strength than those treated by silane coupling agent B and C. After thermal cycling, cement A had no bond strength with no treated ceramic, only ceramic treated by silane coupling agent A with two cements had more than 5 MPa bond strength.CONCLUSION:The glass-infiltrated alumina cermaic treated by the silane coupling agent activated by 10-methacryloyloxydecyl-dihydrogen phosphate could obtain better bond durability with different type of resin cements.

Abstract:Purpose: The aim of this study was to measure siloxane quantity, pH value, and resin wettability on ceramics silanized by five silane coupling agents, and to test the correlation of these parameters of silane coupling agents with bond durability between a machinable glass ceramic and resin cements. Materials and Methods: 1.5-mm-thick ceramic plates (ProCAD, Ivoclar Vivadent) were polished, cleaned, and bonded with ten combinations of five silane coupling agents (Monobond S [Ivoclar Vivadent], Rely X Ceramic Primer [3M], Clearfil Ceramic Primer [Kuraray], GC Ceramic Primer [GC], Porcelain Liner M [Sun Medical]) and two dual-curing resin cements (VariolinkII [VLII, Ivoclar Vivadent], Linkmax HV [LMHV, GC]). Their microshear bond strength was measured after 0, 10,000, and 30,000 thermal cycles. Siloxane quantity, pH value of silane coupling agents and contact angle of Heliobond (Ivoclar Vivadent) to silanized ceramic were measured using a FTIR spectrophotometer, pH-indicator strips, and a contact-angle meter, respectively. Bond strength data were analyzed by three-way ANOVA. For each cement, Pearson's correlation coefficient was calculated to analyze possible correlation between bond strength under different thermocycling conditions and absorbance peak of siloxane, pH value of silane coupling agents, and contact angle of resin to the silanized ceramic surface. Results: The bond strength of ceramic was significantly influenced by the silane coupling agent and thermal cycles, not by resin cement. For both cements, only a negative correlation was found to be significant between the contact angle of resin to silanized ceramic surfaces and bond strength after 30,000 thermal cycles. Conclusion: The better wettability of resin on different silanized ceramic surfaces could improve their bond durability.
[Bond Durability of Self-Adhesive Resin Cement to Glass Ceramic].

Abstract:OBJECTIVETo evaluate the bond durability of glass ceramic to self-adhesive and conventional resin cements.METHODSMaximum water sorption and solubility of two resin cements (A: self-adhesive type, G-CEM; B: conventional type, Linkmax HV) were measured during 6 week water storage. And their surface Knoop hardness number was measured at 0.5, 24 h and 6 week after irradiation. Sixty-four glass ceramic samples were or were not silanized with one of the three silane coupling agents (A: Monobond S; B: Clearfil Ceramic Primer; C: GC Ceramic Primer), and then cemented with two resin cements. The micro-bond strength between the two cements and glass ceramic were measured at baseline and after 30 000 thermal cycle.RESULTSCement A had higher water sorption [(79.62 +/- 5.63) microg/mm³] and solubility [(4.78 +/- 3.33) microg/mm³] than cement B[(35.03 +/- 3.33) microg/mm³, (0.00 +/- 0.00) microg/mm³]. Cement A and B could achieve maximal surface hardness at 24 h after irradiation, and this was maintained during 6 week water storage. After 30 000 thermal cycle, the micro-bond strength between unsilanized glass ceramic and cement A or B was (0.00 +/- 0.00) MPa, and those between cement A and silanized glass ceramic with silane coupling agent A, B and C, were (2.86 +/- 3.25), (12.75 +/- 1.55) and (11.98 +/- 2.35) MPa respectively [for cement B, the data was (5.15 +/- 5.20), (10.94 +/- 3.30) and (14.18 +/- 3.13) MPa]. No significant diffrence was found between the micro-bond strength of cement A and that of cement B with glass ceramic.CONCLUSIONSSelf-adhesive resin cement can achieve similar bond durability to glass ceramic as conventional resin cement does.
Influence of Surface Characteristics of Four Silica-Based Machinable Ceramics on Flexural Strength and Bond Strength of a Dual-Curing Resin Luting Agent.

Abstract:PURPOSE:The aim of the present study was to evaluate the crystalline phase and microstructure of 4 commercial machinable ceramic blocks--Cerec Vitablocs Mark II (Vita), ProCAD (Ivoclar/Vivadent), GN-I (GC), and GNCeram (GC)--and compare flexural strength and shear bond strength between a dual-curing resin luting agent and the ceramics treated with a silane coupling agent.MATERIALS AND METHODS:Specimens were examined using scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, and x-ray diffractometry. Three-point bending tests were performed with polished specimens 20 mm long, 4 mm wide, and 1.2 mm thick. Two differently shaped specimens for each of the 4 machinable ceramics were treated with a silane coupling agent. The specimens were then cemented together with a dual-curing resin luting agent. Half of the specimens were stored in water at 37 degrees C for 24 h and the other half were thermocycled 20,000 times.RESULTS:Chemical composition, crystalline phase, and crystallinity were significantly different between brands. The Vitablocs Mark II material had the significantly lowest flexural strength (101.7 +/- 15.3 MPa), while the GNCeram material had the highest (174.8 +/- 10.3 MPa). The use of a silane coupling agent yielded high shear bond strength after 20,000 thermocycles (Vitablocs Mark II: 37.7 +/- 3.7 MPa, ProCAD: 41.2 +/- 3.1 MPa, GNCeram: 50.2 +/- 2.1 MPa), except with the GN-I material (23.9 +/- 4.4 MPa).CONCLUSION:It appeared that crystal distribution and particle size of leucite crystal, not crystallinity, in the feldspar glass matrix of silica-based machinable ceramics might influence the flexural strength and efficacy of a silane coupling agent in bonding between a dual-curing resin luting agent and machinable ceramics.

Abstract:Objective To compare the bond durability of five self-adhesive resin cements to polished and sandblasted zirconia ceramic.Methods Zirconia ceramic samples were sintered and polished.Half of polished ceramic samples were sandblasted with 50 μm alumina particles.The roughness of polished and sandblasted zirconia ceramic surface was measured by 3D-laser scanning microscope.The polished and sandblasted ceramic samples were bonded to composite cylinders with either Biscem(BC),G-Cem(GC),RelyX U100(RU),Multilink Speed(MS) or Maxcem(MC).The samples divided into two subgroups to receive respectively shear test after 0 and 10 000 time thermal cycles.The data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA test and independent sample t test.Results Air abrasion significantly increased Ra of zirconia ceramic surface(P<0.001).Thermocycling decreased significantly the bond strengths of all test groups(P<0.001),in which polished specimens bonded with MS had significantly higher bond strength than those bonded with either BC,GC,RU,or MC(P<0.001),and air abrasion significantly increased the bond strength of BC,GC,RU and MC,whereas the bond strength of MS was not significantly affected by air abrasion.Conclusion The bond durability of different self-adhesive resin cements to zirconia ceramic has significant differences,and their bond durability was not completely influenced by air abrasion of ceramic surface.
Influence of Varied Silane Commercial Brands and Adhesive Application on Bond Strength and Stability to Lithium Disilicate Glass Ceramic

Abstract:SUMMARY Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of various commercial silane brands with varied chemical compositions with or without the application of an adhesive layer on the microshear bond strength and durability of a resin luting agent to lithium disilicate glass ceramic. Methods and Materials: Lithium disilicate glass ceramic discs (EMX, IPS e.max Press, Ivoclar Vivadent) measuring 10 mm in diameter and 3 mm in thickness were fabricated (n=240). Surfaces were etched using 5% hydrofluoric acid and randomly assigned to 10 groups based on the commercial brand of silane used (n=24): [RP] RelyX Ceramic Primer (3M ESPE); [PS] Prosil (FGM); [SA] Silano (Angelus); [SM] Silano (Maquira); [SU] Silane (Ultradent); [GL] GLUMA Ceramic Primer (Kulzer); [CB] Ceramic Bond (VOCO); [MB] Monobond N (Ivoclar Vivadent); [CP] Clearfil Ceramic Primer (Kuraray); and [DE] 2-step silane (Dentsply Sirona). Half of the EMXs (n=12) received a thin adhesive layer (+) after the silane and prior to resin luting agent, while the other half (n=12) did not receive an adhesive layer (−). For the microshear bond strength test (μSBS), four light-cured resin luting agent cylinders (1 mm in diameter) were created on each EMX surface. Half of these specimens were tested after 24 hours, while the other half were stored in deionized water for 6 months. The μSBS test was conducted using a universal testing machine (DL 500, EMIC) at a crosshead speed of 1 mm/min until failure. The obtained data underwent statistical analysis using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the Tukey test (α=0.05). Results: There was significant influence of the silane commercial brand on bond strength. Notably, “universal primers” yielded lower bond strength results compared to “pure” silane solutions. Water storage had a detrimental effect on microshear bond strength for certain silane commercial brands. Additionally, the application of an adhesive layer negatively impacted bond strength results for all silanes. Conclusions: This study confirms the importance of both silane commercial brand and chemical composition in relation to bond strength of resin luting agents to lithium disilicate glass ceramic. Furthermore, the application of an adhesive layer may have an adverse effect on bond stability over time.

Abstract:This study aims to evaluate the effect of chemical adhesion by a silane coupler and mechanical retention by hydrofluoric acid (HFA) etching on the bond durability of resin to a dental glass ceramic with leucite crystallites. Half of the ceramic plates were etched with 4.8% HFA (HFA group) for 60 s, and the other half were not treated (NoHFA group). The scale of their surface roughness and rough area was measured by a 3D laser scanning microscope. These plates then received one of the following two bond procedures to form four bond test groups: HFA/cement, NoHFA/cement, HFA/silane/cement and NoHFA/silane/cement. The associated micro-shear bond strength and bond failure modes were tested after 0 and 30 000 thermal water bath cycles. Four different silane/cement systems (Monobond S/Variolink II, GC Ceramic Primer/Linkmax HV, Clearfil Ceramic Primer/Clearfil Esthetic Cement and Porcelain Liner M/SuperBond C&B) were used. The data for each silane/cement system were analyzed by three-way ANOVA. HFA treatment significantly increased the surface R(a) and R(y) values and the rough area of the ceramic plates compared with NoHFA treatment. After 30 000 thermal water bath cycles, the bond strength of all the test groups except the HFA/Linkmax HV group was significantly reduced, while the HFA/Linkmax HV group showed only adhesive interface failure. The other HFA/cement groups and all NoHFA/cement groups lost bond strength completely, and all NoHFA/silane/cement groups with chemical adhesion had significantly higher bond strength and more ceramic cohesive failures than the respective HFA/cement groups with mechanical retention. The result of the HFA/silane/cement groups with both chemical adhesion and mechanical retention revealed that HFA treatment could enhance the bond durability of resin/silanized glass ceramics, which might result from the increase of the chemical adhesion area on the ceramic rough surface and subsequently reduced degradation speed of the silane coupler, rather than the mechanical retention of the ceramic rough surface.

Abstract:Objective To observe and compare the shear bond strength of different composite resin cement systems to glass infiltrated alumina oxide ceramic.Methods 40 healthy non-carious human molars were selected in the study.The samples were divided into four groups,10 pieces for each group,including group A(Solobond Plus+Bifix QM),group B(Futurabond DC+Bifix QM),group C(Bifix SE),and group D(Panavia F).All specimens were stored in water at 37 °C for 24 hours.The shear bond strength of four different bonding systems to dentin was tested respectively.The data were statistically analyzed by ANOVA with SAS 6.12.Results Shear bond strength of Panavia F was significantly higher than that of other three groups(P<0.01),and the shear bond strength of Bifix SE was much lower than other groups.Conclusion A successful bond can be achieved by Panavia F in glass infiltrated alumina oxide ceramic.

Abstract:Objective: To compare the bond durability of resin cement with zirconia ceramic treated by different couplers.Method: Zirconia ceramic(Vita Inceram YZ) plates with the thickness of 2.5 mm were dyed by A3 coloring liquid,and fired.The surfaces of ceramic samples were treated by following couplers: Clearfil Ceramic Primer(A),Alloy Primer(B),Metal/Zirconia primer(C) and Alumina/Zirconia Primer respectively(n=10).The bond strength of treated zirconia ceramic samples with resin cement(Panavia F,Kuraray) were measured before and after 10 000 thermal cycles.The samples without coupler treatment were used in the control group.The data was analyzed by one-way ANOVA.Results: Before thermocycling,bond strength of all test groups were more than 10 MPa.Thermocycling reduced the bond strength significantly in all test groups(P<0.001).Group A had significantly higher bond strength(MPa)(6.86±1.74) than the control(4.21±1.74)(P<0.001);while that of control group was higher than group B(2.35±1.85),C(0.55±0.16) and D(0.92±0.53)(P<0.001).Conclusion: The pretreatment of zirconia ceramic by Clearfil Ceramic Primer can improve the bond durability of zirconia ceramic bonded with Panavia F.
In vitro comparison of bonding to zirconia- or glass- based ceramics between flowable resin composites and composite resin cements

Abstract:Purpose: To evaluate and compare the bonding of flowable resin composites and light-cured resin cements to dental ceramics. Methods: Grit-blasted zirconia plates were primed with MDP-containing adhesive. Lithium disilicate glasses plates were etched with HF and primed with silane. Two flowable resin composites with high (CM: 75 wt%/62 vol%) and low (BF: 67.3 wt%/47 vol%) filler contents, and two resin cements, again with high (C: 72 wt%/69 vol%) and low (R: 66 wt%/47 vol%) filler contents, were bonded to both types of pretreated ceramics. Shear bond strength (SBS) was measured after 24 hours water storage or 10,000 times thermocycling between 5 and 55°C. The viscosities and film thicknesses of the four resin-based luting agents (RBLAs) were also explored by rotational rheometer and metallurgical microscope severally. Results: Different RBLAs provided statistically different SBS values, with the high-filler specimens exhibiting higher SBS values than the low-filler specimens. The viscosities decreased in the order C > R > BF > CM. The film thicknesses for the BF and C groups were higher than those of the CM and R groups. Clinical significance: This study provides evidence that flowable resin composites with high filler contents and low viscosities may serve as an alternative to light-cured resin cements for luting zirconia or lithium disilicate glass. This expands the range of light-cured luting agents available for bonding of veneers or other thin restorations, which is of great benefit to clinical practice.
Evaluation of Microtensile Bond Strength Between Resin Composite and Glass Ceramic

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To evaluate the microtensile bond strength of resin composite to glass ceramic, and the effect of surface treatment of resin composite and thermal cycling aging on the microtensile bond strength.METHODS:Rectangular blocks were made with dentin of extracted molars, resin composite or feldspathic glass ceramic respectively. The bonding surfaces of these rectangular blocks were sanded by 600-grit silicon carbide paper before luting. A self-etching resin cement was used as luting agent. The specimens were divided into groups according to the types of substrates of adhesion (dentin/glass ceramic or resin composite/glass ceramic), the way of surface treatments and whether thermal cycling aging ocurred. The dentin blocks were adhered to ceramic blocks as controls (group A1 and A2). The resin composite blocks were adhered to the ceramic blocks as experiment groups. The resin composite surfaces were treated by different ways before luting: no extra surface treatment (group B1 and B2), treated by ethyl methacrylate solution (group C1 and C2) or silane coupling agent (group D1 and D2), coarsened by 360-grit silicon carbide paper (group E1 and E2) or polished by 1 200-grit silicon carbide paper (group F1 and F2). After luting, the microtensile bond strength of the specimens were tested before (group A1-F1) or after (group A2-F2) thermal cycling aging. After microtensile bond strength test, the fracture bonding surfaces of the specimens were observed by a scanning electron microscopy to determine the type of bonding failure. The data were statistically analyzed using one-way analysis of variance.RESULTS:The microtensile bond strength of resin composite to glass ceramic with no extra treatment achieved high bond values before and after thermal cycling [B1 (30.02±3.85) MPa, B2 (26.83±3.14) MPa], which were statistically different from those of the control groups [A1 (20.55±4.51) MPa, A2 (12.94±0.69) MPa, P < 0.05]. The microtensile bond strength between the glass ceramic and resin composite did not increase after different surface treatments of resin composite.CONCLUSIONS:The microtensile bond strength between resin composite and glass ceramic achieved as similar bond strength as that between dentin and glass ceramic and even better. Surface treatment of resin composite via methyl methacrylate solution, silane coupling agent, coarsening, or polishing did not increase the microtensile bond strength effectually.
[Research on Bond Durability among Different Core Materials and Zirconia Ceramic Cemented by Self-Adhesive Resin Cements].

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:This research estimated shear bond durability of zirconia and different substrates cemented by two self-adhesive resin cements (Clearfil SA Luting and RelyX U100) before and after aging conditioning. METHODS:Machined zirconia ceramic discs were cemented with four kinds of core material (cobalt-chromium alloy, flowable composite resin core material, packable composite resin, and dentin) with two self-adhesive resin cements (Clearfil SA Luting and RelyX U100). All specimens were divided into eight test groups, and each test group was divided into two subgroups. Each subgroup was subjected to shear test before and after 10 000 thermal cycles. RESULTS:All factors (core materials, cements, and thermal cycle) significantly influenced bond durability of zirconia ceramic (P<0.00 1). After 10 000 thermal cycles, significant decrease was not observed in shear bond strength of cobalt-chromium alloy luted with Clearfil SA Luting (P>0.05); observed shear bond strength was significantly higher than those of other substrates (P<0.05). Significantly higher shear bond strength was noted in Clearfil SA Luting luted with cobalt-chromium alloy, flowable composite resin core material, and packable composite resin than that of RelyX U100 (P<0.05). However, significant difference was not observed in shear bond strength of dentin luted with Clearfil SA Luting and RelyX U100 (P>0.05). CONCLUSIONS:Different core materials and self-adhesive resin cements can significantly affect bond durability of zirconia ceramic. .
Bond strengths of porcelain to cobalt-chromium alloys made by casting, milling, and selective laser melting

Abstract:Statement of problem: Cobalt-chromium (Co-Cr) alloys have been widely used for metal-ceramic fixed prostheses and can be fabricated using conventionally cast or new computer-aided technology. However, the effect of different manufacturing methods on the metal-ceramic bond strength needs further evaluation. Purpose: The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the metal-ceramic bond strength of a Co-Cr alloy made by casting, milling, and selective laser melting (SLM). Material and methods: Co-Cr specimens (25×3×0.5 mm) were prepared using a cast, milled, or SLM method and layered with ceramic (8×3×1.1 mm). Metal-ceramic bond strength was measured by a 3-point bend test according to ISO9693. The area fraction of adherence porcelain (AFAP) was determined by measuring the Si content of the specimens with scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM/EDS). The metal-ceramic bond strength and AFAP results were analyzed using 1-way analysis of variance and the Bonferroni post hoc test (α=.05). SEM/EDS and metallurgic microscopy were also used to study the specimens' morphology, elemental composition, and metallurgic structure. Results: No significant differences (P>.05) were found for the bond strength among cast, milled, and SLM Co-Cr alloys. The milled and SLM groups showed significantly more porcelain adherence than the cast group (P<.001). The surface morphologies and oxidation characters of cast, milled, and SLM Co-Cr alloys were similar, whereas the metallurgic structures were different. Conclusions: The bond strength between ceramics and Co-Cr alloys is independent of the manufacturing method. However, milling- and SLM-produced alloys had better porcelain adherence.

Abstract:Background: To explore the effect of adhesive surface with porcelain sintering and different silane coupling agents on adhesive properties of zirconia ceramics.Methods: Zirconia blocks (n=72) were randomly divided into two large groups (n=36) according to whether the adhesive surface was treated with sintered porcelain: N (no porcelain sintering), P (porcelain sintering). Then, according to different silane coupling agents, each group was randomly divided into three small groups, six small groups in total (n=12): NN (no porcelain sintering and agent), NM (no porcelain sintering + Monobond-S), NC (no porcelain sintering + Clearfil Repair); PN (porcelain sintering + no agent), PM (porcelain sintering + Monobond-S), PC (porcelain sintering + Clearfil Repair). After surface treatment, RelyX Unicem Cement was used to make ceramic-resin bonding specimens. Then, each of the six small groups was randomly divided into two subgroups; shear bond strength (SBS) was tested and bond failure mode was analyzed before and after thermal cycling 5,000 times.Results: (I) SBS analysis: the SBS values of the P groups were significantly higher than those of the N groups (P<0.05). The groups treated with silane coupling agents showed higher SBS values than the control group (P<0.05), and the PC groups showed the highest SBS values (P<0.05). The SBS of each group was significantly decreased after thermal cycling (P<0.05). (II) The microcharacteristics under scanning electron microscopy and energy spectrum analysis: the ceramic blocks being treated by porcelain sintering showed more roughness than the control group. A large amount of silicon (Si) appeared on the surface of the ceramic blocks after porcelain sintering.Conclusions: (I) Treating the adhesive surface by porcelain sintering can improve the bonding strength between zirconia and RelyX Unicem Cement, and the effect was better in conjunction with silane coupling agent. (II) The two kinds of silane coupling agent (Monobond-S, Clearfil Repair) can improve the bonding strength between zirconia and resin cement. The effect of Clearfil Repair is better than that of Monobond-S. (III) Thermal cycling had a significant adverse effect on SBS between zirconia and RelyX Unicem Cement. Clearfil Repair is helpful in improving the durability of zirconia bonding strength.

Effect of Silica Coating on Fracture Strength of Glass-Infiltrated Alumina Ceramic Cemented to Dentin.

Abstract:PURPOSE:To examine the availability of sol-gel processed silica coating for alumina-based ceramic bonding, and determine which silica sol concentration was appropriate for silica coating.MATERIALS AND METHODS:Sixty disks of In-Ceram alumina ceramic were fabricated and randomly divided into 5 main groups. The disks received 5 different surface conditioning treatments: Group Al, sandblasted; Group AlC, sandblasted + silane coupling agent applied; Groups Al20C, Al30C, and Al40C, sandblasted, silica coating via sol-gel process prepared using 20 wt%, 30 wt%, and 40 wt% silica sols, and then silane coupling agent applied. Before bonding, one-step adhesives were applied on pre-prepared ceramic surfaces of all groups. Then, 60 dentin specimens were prepared and conditioned with phosphoric acid and one-step adhesive. Ceramic disks of all groups were cemented to dentin specimens with dual-curing resin cements. Fracture strength was determined at 24 h and after 20 days of storage in water.RESULTS:Groups Al20C, Al30C, and Al40C revealed significantly higher fracture strength than groups Al and AlC. No statistically significant difference in fracture strength was found between groups Al and AlC, or among groups Al20C, Al30C, and Al40C. Fracture strength values of all the groups did not change after 20 days of water storage.CONCLUSION:Sol-gel processed silica coating can enhance fracture strength of In-Ceram alumina ceramic after bonding to dentin, and different silica sol concentrations produced the same effects. Twenty days of water storage did not decrease the fracture strength.
Silane reactivity and resin bond strength to lithium disilicate ceramic surfaces

Abstract:Objective: To evaluate the silane status in commercially available products and their bonding capacity with polished glass-ceramic surfaces before and after hydrofluoric (HF) acid-etching. Methods: The products tested were Calibra Silane Coupling Agent/CS, G-Multi Primer/GM, Kerr Silane Primer/KS, Monobond Plus/MB and Scotchbond Universal Adhesive/SB. The silane status was studied by 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (13C-NMR). The roughness parameters of polished (group A) and HF acid-etched (group B) lithium disilicate glass-ceramic surfaces were measured by optical profilometry (n = 5/group). The interaction of the products with group A and B ceramic surfaces was examined by attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR). The shear strength (SBS) of a flowable composite bonded to the ceramic surfaces (groups A, B) was assessed before (NS) and after silane treatment (n = 20/group, product). Results: The NMR analysis showed the presence of silanol monomers only in CS. Methoxylated-siloxane adducts were found in GM, silanol-siloxane adducts in MB, SB, and siloxane polymers in KS. Acid-etching greatly increased Sa, Sz, Sdr, Sc and Sv parameters (p < 0.001) and ATR-FTIR analysis demonstrated evidence of bonding with the substrate in CS. Weibull analysis of SBS revealed the following rankings in characteristic life (p < 0.05): CS > SB,KS,MB > GM > NS (group A) and CS > GM > SB,KS,MB,NS (group B). The most reliable treatment in both groups was CS. For the same silane treatment, the SBS of group B were significantly higher from group A. Failures were mainly of adhesive type, except of several partial resin cohesive failures found in group B. Significance: The chemical bonding capacity of the silanes was highest in products with silanol monomers. Acid-etching increased bond strength to a level that neutralized the silane contribution in products with silanol-siloxane adducts and siloxane polymers, providing thus bond strength values similar to silane-free treatments.
Experimental Study on Bond Strength of Machinable Composite Resin and Dentin with Three Kinds of Resin Cements

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To examine the shear and microtensile bond strength between a newly developed dental machinable composite resin (polymethylmetacrylate/nano SiO2-ZrO2, PNSZ) and dentin cemented using three resin luting systems and to select the most suitable one.METHODS:The shear and microtensile bond strength between the machinable composite resin and dentin cemented using three resin luting systems (Group A:RelyX ARC, Group B:Panavia-F,Group C:Variolink II) were tested. The broken specimens were observed with a stereomicroscope (x 50) to compare their failure modes. RESULTS; In the shear tests, no significant difference was found in bond strength among Group A [ (14. 07 +/- 4. 67) MPa] ,Group B[ (13.17 +/- 4. 63) MPa] and Group C [ ( 12. 10 +/- 2.18) MPa] (P > 0.05) . In the microtensile tests, no significant difference was found in bond strength among Group A [(11.49 +/- 4.90) MPa],Group B[(9.66 +/- 4.15) MPa].and Group C[(10.11 +/- 4.20) MPa](P > 0. 05).The failure modes of all the three resin cements were predominantly adhesive failures at the dentin/cement interface.CONCLUSIONS:The three types of resin cements showed similar results in bond strength between the dental machinable composite resin and dentin. Bonding at the resin/cement interface was stronger than that at the dentin/cement interface.

Abstract:Objective:To evaluate the effects of different ceramic surface treatments on the bond strength between ceramic and resin.Methods:Four VITA ceramic specimens (15mm×7mm×5mm) were divided into five different groups according to different ceramic surface treatments.They were individually named Control Group,Group S-PF,Group S-H-PF,Group B-PF and Group B-H-PF.The microtensile bond strength was performed with a microtensile tester at a speed of 1.0mm/min.The micromorphology of the interface was observed with scanning electron microscopy (SEM).Results:The microtensile bond strength in group control,S-PF,S-H-PF,B-PF and B-H-PF was(17.0± 1.7)MPa,(24.1 ± 3.5) MPa,(24.5± 4.2) MPa,(24.2± 4.4) MPa,(29.9± 7.5) MPa.The B-H-PF group shows the highest bond strength (P＜ 0.05).Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) observation indicated that the adhesive interface of B-H-PF group was homogenous and compact without significant gaps.Conclusion:Different ceramic surface treatments produce different bonding properties between resin and ceramic.And bur polishing combined with HF may acquire a better adhesive interface.

Abstract:Objective The aim of this study was to evaluate the resin bond strength and durability of bonding between zirconia and resin with a new surface treatment technique,fusing glass ceramic ( FGC ),on zirconia.Methods Sixty zirconia discs were equally divided into three groups and the surfaces were treated separately by the following methods,sandblasted by 50 μm aluminum oxide particle ( Sb),fused with one layer of glass ceramic (Fu),sandblasted by 50 μm aluminum oxide particle and then fused with one layer of glass ceramic (Sb-Fu).Twenty cast ceramic discs were used as control group.All the discs were cemented to surface of cured core-resin using resin luting cement Super bond C&B.Half of the discs in each group were performed thermal cycling ( 10 000 cycles between 5 and 55 ℃ ) test.Then shear bond strength test (SBS) were performed in each group.The surface morphology of all the groups before and after surface treatment was examined using scanning electron microscopy.Results The mean (SD) bond strength of Sb,Fu,Sb-Fu,and ceramic control groups were 24.76 ± 2.80,29.08 ± 5.80,28.67 ± 7.20,and 31.30 ±2.90 MPa.The value of Sb group was lower than other three groups significantly before thermal cycling test.The values of Fu and Sb-Fu groups had no significant differences with the group of ceramic control.The SBS values of each groups were 24.45 ± 3.90,28.50 ± 3.70,25.41 ± 2.00,and 32.19 ±3.90 MPa respectively after thermal cycling test,there were no significantly drop of SBS value in each groups.The failure mode after SBS test was primarily cohesive and mix failure in Sb-Fu and Fu groups.Conclusions For the limitation of this study and under the testing conditions,FGC treatment has possibility to enhance the resin bond strength and durability of zirconia/resin bonding.
