Abstract:Statement of problem: The selective laser melting (SLM) manufacturing technique has been widely employed to produce Co-Cr dental metal frameworks. The selection of Co-Cr alloy powders has the potential to influence the microstructure and tensile properties, consequently impacting the bond strength of the metal-porcelain. However, limited information is available regarding the effect of Co-Cr alloy powder on these properties when all other factors remain consistent. Purpose: The purpose of this in vitro study was to assess how the choice of Co-Cr alloys during SLM manufacturing influences the microstructure, tensile properties, and bond strength of metal-ceramic combinations. Material and methods: Three different Co-Cr alloy powders, Co-Cr-Mo, Co-Cr-Mo-W, and Co-Cr-W were selected in this study. The powder characteristics and chemical compositions were analyzed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis, respectively. Subsequently, 12×12×15-mm cube specimens, cylindrical tensile test specimens, and 25×3×0.5-mm metal strips were fabricated using the SLM technique. Microstructural investigations of the cube specimens were conducted after metallographic preparation using SEM. The cylindrical tensile specimens (n=8) from each composition were subjected to tensile tests at a deformation rate of 0.5 mm/min. Following the application of ceramic to the metal specimens (n=10) in each group, the strength of the metal-ceramic bond was evaluated through a 3-point bend test conducted at a crosshead speed of 1 mm/min. Mechanical properties obtained from the tensile tests and bond strength values were statistically analyzed using a one-way ANOVA and Tukey post hoc comparison tests (α=.05). Results: Melt pool boundaries, columnar and equiaxed grains, and precipitates were observed in the microstructures of 3 different alloys produced by SLM. The Co-Cr-Mo-W alloy had more uniformly dispersed and finely distributed precipitates compared with other alloy compositions. The Co-Cr-Mo-W alloy had exhibited the highest yield strength (1068.0 ±41.2 MPa) and ultimate tensile strength (1263.4 ±10.7 MPa) while showing the lowest ductility under the tensile tests (6.1 ±0.9%) among all 3 alloys. Significant differences in the tensile mechanical properties were observed in the alloys except between the yield strength of the Co-Cr-Mo and Co-Cr-W alloys. The highest elongation (8.9 ±1.2%) was seen in the Co-Cr-Mo alloy. However, no significant differences were detected regarding the bond strength of all 3 groups (P>.05). The mean bond strength values were approximately 42 MPa for all the alloys. Conclusions: The results indicate that the selection of different Co-Cr alloy powders used in SLM production may influence both microstructure and tensile properties. However, the strength of the metal-ceramic bond of Co-Cr alloys remained unaffected by this selection.
Bond strength and interfacial analysis of six CoCr alloys made by conventional casting and selective laser melting

Abstract:Purpose: To investigate the effects of the elemental composition and the manufacturing process of cobalt chromium-molybdenum (CoCr-Mo), cobalt chromium-tungsten (CoCr-W), and CoCr-Mo-W alloys on metal-ceramic bond strength. Materials and methods: Six CoCr-based alloys were included in this study, a were classified into three different groups depending on their elemental composition (Ν = 10, for each group). The first group had molybdenum (Mo) as the third alloying element, the second group contained tungsten (W) (without Mo), and the third group included both alloying elements. The groups were further divided by the manufacturing process (casting or selective laser melting, SLM). Interfacial analysis was carried out using backscattered electron imaging (BEI) and energy-dispersive X-ray microanalysis (EDX) operating in line scan mode. The metal-ceramic bond strength was tested by a 3-point bending test according to the ISO 9693 requirements. The fracture mode of all specimens was examined under a stereomicroscope. The bond strength results were statistically analyzed by 2-way ANOVA and Tukey's multiple comparison post hoc test (a = 0.05). Results: A continuous interface with the porcelain was found without pores, debonding areas, or other defects. Of the major elements found at the interface, Co showed the highest diffusion rate, while titanium (Ti) had the lowest diffusion rate. No statistically significant differences were identified in metal-ceramic bond strength either among materials or between manufacturing processes. The fracture mode was found to be cohesive for all specimens. Conclusions: The metal-ceramic bond strength is independent of the current CoCr alloy type and manufacturing process when comparing conventional casting and SLM. Interfacial analysis revealed no differences between the tested groups.

Abstract:Multitargeting is a valuable concept in drug design for the development of effective drugs for the treatment of multifactorial diseases. This concept has most frequently been realized by incorporating two or more pharmacophores into a single hybrid molecule. Many such hybrids, due to the increased molecular size, exhibit unfavorable physicochemical properties leading to adverse effects and/or an inappropriate ADME (absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion) profile. To avoid this limitation and achieve additional therapeutic benefits, here we describe a novel multitargeting strategy based on the synergistic effects of a parent drug and its active metabolite(s). The concept of metabolism‐activated multitargeting (MAMUT) is illustrated using a number of examples.
Metal-ceramic bond strength of Co-Cr alloy fabricated by selective laser melting

Abstract:Objectives: This study was to evaluated the metal-ceramic bond strength of a Co-Cr dental alloy prepared using a selective laser melting (SLM) technique. Methods: Two groups comprised of twenty Co-Cr metal bars each were prepared using either a SLM or traditional lost-wax casting method. Ten bars from each group were moulded into standard ISO 9693:1999 dimensions of 25 mm × 3 mm × 0.5 mm with 1.1 mm of porcelain fused onto an 8 mm × 3 mm rectangular area in the centre of each bar. Metal-ceramic bonding was assessed using a three-point bending test. Fracture mode analysis and area fraction of adherence porcelain (AFAP) were determined by measuring Si content of specimens by SEM/EDS. Results: Student's t-test within the groups demonstrated no significant difference for the mean bond strength between the SLM and traditional cast sample groups. While SEM/EDS analysis indicated a mixed fracture mode on the debonding interface of both the SLM and the cast groups, the SLM group showed significantly more porcelain adherence than the control group (p<0.05). Conclusions: The SLM metal-ceramic system exhibited a bonding strength that exceeds the requirement of ISO 9691:1999(E) and it even showed a better behaviour in porcelain adherence test comparable to traditional cast methods.
Adhesion of veneering porcelain to cobalt-chromium dental alloys processed with casting, milling, and additive manufacturing methods: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract:Statement of problem: Selective laser melting (SLM) additive manufacturing (AM) technologies provide an alternative to conventional casting and milling procedures in fabricating metal-ceramic dental prostheses. However, the quality of porcelain bond strength to the SLM AM cobalt-chromium (Co-Cr) metal framework of a dental restoration is unclear. Purpose: The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to identify in vitro studies that reported the porcelain bond strength to SLM AM Co-Cr dental metal alloys and compare the porcelain bond strength values to cast, milled, and additively manufactured Co-Cr dental alloys. Material and methods: An electronic systematic review was performed in different databases: MEDLINE/PubMed, EMBASE, World of Science, Cochrane, and Scopus. A manual search was also conducted. Studies that reported the porcelain bond strength to SLM Co-Cr metal alloys and in the English language were included. Two investigators evaluated the quality assessment of the studies by applying the JBI critical appraisal checklist for quasi-experimental studies (nonrandomized experimental studies). A third investigator was consulted to resolve lack of consensus. Two subgroups were created based on the test used, 3-point bend and shear bond strength tests. The porcelain bond strength of cast, milled, and AM Co-Cr dental alloys were compared. The I2 statistic and its associated P value were used to assess the heterogeneity between studies. The Eger test was used for determining significance of the funnel pots. Results: A total of 216 studies were collected from the electronic and manual searches. After independently evaluating the titles and abstracts by the reviewers, 26 articles were identified. Three of these were excluded after full-text revision. The porcelain bond strength comparison between the cast and AM alloys for the 3-point bend subgroup revealed a significant result for overall effect (P<.001) favoring the SLM method with considerable heterogeneity (I2=83%, P<.001). Furthermore, the porcelain bond strength comparison between cast and milled alloys for the shear bond strength subgroup revealed a significant test for overall effect (P=.04) favoring milled procedures with a nonsignificant unimportant heterogeneity (I2= 0%, P<.47) and for the 3-point bend subgroup (P<.001) favoring milled specimens with a significant considerable heterogeneity (I2=79%, P<.001). Conclusions: The metal manufacturing method had no effect on the porcelain bond strength to Co-Cr dental metal alloys.

Abstract:Selective laser sintering (SLS) is a new type of additive material manufacturing technology. The development of precise 3D metal printing technology has enabled the printing of complicated metal structures, particularly in the medical field. Finding a way to integrate new technologies with Co–Cr alloys for the precision manufacturing of dental restoration materials and a way to improve the metal-ceramic bonding strength of the materials have become a key focus of dental restoration clinical trials. The purpose of this study is to evaluate bonding strength and ceramic adhesion between metal and ceramics using Co–Cr specimens with different porous structures manufactured using SLS technology. According to the international standard ISO9693:19992, we printed three sets of 10 rectangular Co–Cr alloy test specimens of the same size (25 × 3 × 0.5 mm) using an SLS-3D metal printer and fused a ceramic layer (8 x 3 × 1.1 mm) to the center of the Co-Cy alloy test specimen. Before testing, we conducted stress and fracture simulation analysis on three specimen types (no holes, circular-shaped holes, and rhombic-shaped holes), using ABAQUS results to predict the results of three-point bending tests. These simulation results were then compared with the experimental data. We used three-point bending tests to assess the bonding strength of the fabricated metal-ceramic bonding surface. We also used a digital microscope (100× and 200×) to observe the surface conditions of the samples. Finally, we analyzed the results using one-way analysis of variance. The ABAQUS bending simulations indicated that the bending energy decreased sequentially for the hole-free, circular-hole and rhombic-hole specimens. Similarly, when the three types of test specimen were manufactured using SLS, significant differences in bending energy were observed between the rhombic-hole specimens and both the hole-free (P < 0.05) and circular-hole specimens (P < 0.05). In addition, the bond strength for all groups was higher than the international minimum standard of 25 MPa (33.36 ± 3.17 MPa). In this research, the bond strength of all three metal-ceramic test specimens was higher than the international minimum standard of 25 MPa set by ISO1999/9693. However, the circular porous design did not show previous diversity with other porous shape design. In addition, due to limitations in the accuracy of 3D printing using SLS, the structural advantages our proposed specimen design are difficult to verify. Therefore, we plan to develop new structural designs to improve the bonding strength of metal-ceramic structures in future work.

Abstract:Statement of problem: A high metal-ceramic bond strength is important for successful dental restorations. However, studies on the evaluation of the bond strength of porous metal-ceramic restorations compared with conventional ones are scarce. Purpose: The purpose of this in vitro study was to compare the bond strength of a porous metal-ceramic structure with conventional metal-ceramic restorations. Material and methods: Ten porous specimens were fabricated by selective laser sintering (SLS) according to the International Organization for Standardization 9693-1:2012, 10 specimens without porosity by SLS, and 10 cobalt-chromium (Co-Cr) cast specimens without porosity. The ceramic was applied with the pressing method. A 3-point bend test was performed with a universal testing machine, and the data were statistically analyzed by using 1-way analysis of variance (α=.05). Results: The mean ±standard deviation bond strength of the porous group fabricated by SLS was the lowest (35.6 ±9.1 MPa), that of the group without porosity in the casting method was 43.5 ±7.8 MPa, and that of the group without porosity fabricated by SLS was the highest (47.7 ±4.5 MPa); these were statistically similar (P=.058). Conclusions: Although the porous structure reported the lowest bond strength among the 3 sets of test specimens, its bond strength was higher than the International Standards Organization standard of 25 MPa.

Abstract:Cobalt-chromium (Co-Cr) alloy is a widely used base material for dental fixed prostheses. These restorations can be produced through casting technique, subtractive or additive manufacturing technologies. However, limited information is available regarding the influence of manufacturing techniques on the properties of Co-Cr alloy since most studies used different chemical compositions of Co-Cr alloy for different manufacturing methods. This study compares the mechanical properties, metal-ceramic bond strength, and microstructures of specimens produced by casting, milling, and selective laser melting (SLM) from one single Co-Cr alloy composition. The mechanical properties of the alloy were investigated by tensile and Vickers hardness tests, and metal-ceramic bond strength was determined by three-point bending. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with backscattered electron (BSE) images and optical microphotographs were used to analyze the surface microstructures. Compared with the casting and milling techniques, SLM Co-Cr alloy specimens indicated enhanced mechanical properties and comparable metal-ceramic bond strength. Besides, the microstructures of the SLM specimens showed finer grains with more second phase particles than the casting and milling specimens. The results of our study indicate that SLM might be superior to traditional techniques for the manufacturing of fixed dental restorations.

[Metal-ceramic bond strength of Co-Cr alloy processed by selective laser melting]

Abstract:Objective: To evaluate the metal-ceramic bond strength of a selective laser melting Co-Cr alloy. Methods: Twelve Co-Cr metal bars were prepared according to the ISO 9693 standard with Vita porcelain fused onto the centre of each bar. Then the sample bars were divided into two groups of six each. The control group was made by traditional cast process (cast group), and the experimental group was processed by selective laser melting (SLM) technology (SLM group). Metal-ceramic bonding strength and fracture mode were assessed using three-point bending test. Fracture mode analysis was determined by scanning electronic microscope/energy dispersive spectroscopy. Student's t-test was used to analyze the data in SPSS 13.0. Results: The metal-ceramic bond strength value of the cast group was (33.45 ± 2.34) MPa, and that of the SLM group was (31.62 ± 2.34) MPa (t = 0.79, P > 0.05). A mixed fracture mode on the debonding interface of all specimens was observed, while little porcelain was reserved. Conclusions: The metal-ceramic system processed by SLM exhibited a bonding strength that satisfies the requirement of clinical application.
Effects of posttreatment on the metal-ceramic bond properties of selective-laser-melted Co-Cr dental alloy—Part 2: Heat treatment after porcelain firing

Abstract:STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: The selective laser melting (SLM) technique has been a promising method of fabricating Co-Cr metal-ceramic restorations; however, the lower metal-ceramic bond properties of SLM Co-Cr restorations have become a major issue in clinical use.PURPOSE: The purpose of this in vitro study was to propose and verify a method of improving the metal-ceramic bond properties of SLM Co-Cr alloy with heat treatment after porcelain firing (PH).MATERIAL AND METHODS: Forty-eight (25×3×0.5 mm) Co-Cr specimens, divided into 6 groups (Control group [CG]; 550 °C; 650 °C; 750 °C; 850 °C; 950 °C) according to PH temperatures, were prepared by using SLM techniques. The 3-point bend tests were performed to evaluate the metal-ceramic bond strengths; subsequently, the fracture feature was assessed by using a digital camera and scanning electron microscope (SEM) coupled with an energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) detector, to determine the area fraction of adherence porcelain (AFAP). The interface morphologies and element distribution were determined with SEM/EDS detectors. Phase identification and quantification were examined with an X-ray diffractometer (XRD). A 1-way ANOVA and the Tukey honestly significant difference tests were used to analyze bond strengths and AFAP values (α=.05).RESULTS: The bond strengths were 35.33 ±1.25 MPa for the CG group, 34.53 ±3.20 MPa for the 550 °C group, 38.20 ±2.60 MPa for the 650 °C group, 42.85 ±2.31 MPa for the 750 °C group, 33.28 ±3.85 MPa for the 850 °C group, and 29.09 ±2.86 MPa for the 950 °C group. Significant differences were not observed among the CG, 550 °C, and 850 °C groups (P>.05) but were found among the other groups (P<.05). Fracture and AFAP results displayed a mixed fracture mode of adhesive and cohesive fracture. The thicknesses of native oxide films across the 6 groups were relatively close as the temperature increased, but the thickness of the diffusion layer increased as well. Excessive oxidation and massive phase transformation caused holes and microcracks to appear in the 850 °C and 950 °C groups, reducing bond strengths. XRD analysis evidenced that the phase transformation of γ→ε occurred at the interface during PH treating.CONCLUSIONS: PH treatment significantly affected the metal-ceramic bond properties of SLM Co-Cr porcelain specimens. The 750 °C-PH-treated specimens displayed higher mean bond strengths and improved fracture characteristics among the 6 groups.

Abstract:STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Dental cobalt-chromium (Co-Cr) alloy manufactured by selective laser melting (SLM) is not recommended for clinical applications before annealing because of excessive residual stress. However, limited information is available regarding the relationship between annealing temperature and the metal-ceramic bond properties of SLM Co-Cr alloys.PURPOSE: The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate the effects of annealing temperature on the metal-ceramic bond properties of SLM Co-Cr alloys.MATERIAL AND METHODS: Four groups with different annealing temperatures (850 °C; 950 °C; 1050 °C; 1150 °C) were prepared by using SLM techniques. Bond strengths were measured by using a 3-point bend test; subsequently, debonded surface morphologies and elements were assessed by using a scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The area fraction of adherence porcelain (AFAP) value was introduced to analyze fracture characteristics. Microstructural and interfacial characteristics were characterized by SEM/EDS and X-ray diffraction analysis. The coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) test was used to analyze thermal matching. A 1-way ANOVA and the Tukey honestly significant difference tests were used to analyze bond strengths and AFAP values statistically (α=.05).RESULTS: The mean ±standard deviation values of the metal-ceramic bond strengths were 40.68 ±4.34 MPa for the 850 °C group, 37.54 ±5.34 MPa for the 950 °C group, 45.97 ±2.18 MPa for the 1050 °C group, and 50.79 ±1.79 MPa for the 1150 °C group. Significant differences (P<.05) were observed among all groups. Debonded surfaces and AFAP analysis displayed a mixed fracture mode of adhesive and cohesive fracture, and 1150 °C-annealing specimens exhibited better fracture characteristics close to cohesive fractures. As the temperature increased, native oxide film thicknesses remained unchanged; the 850 °C group had the thinnest diffusion layer, while the other 3 groups had similar thicknesses. Although the 1050 °C and 1150 °C groups displayed higher CTE values, their microstructures were more conducive to atomic diffusion and improved chemical bonding. Microstructure analysis found that ε phase and second-phase precipitates jointly affected metal-ceramic bond strength.CONCLUSIONS: Annealing temperatures affected the metal-ceramic bond strengths of SLM Co-Cr porcelain specimens. 1150 °C annealing SLM Co-Cr specimens displayed higher bond strengths and improved fracture and interface characteristics among the 4 groups.

Pilot Study of Organ Preservation Multimodality Therapy for Locally Advanced Resectable Oropharyngeal Carcinoma

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to determine the early efficacy and toxicity of a new multimodality organ-preservation regimen for locally advanced, resectable oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Patients with T3-4N0-3M0 or T2N2-3M0 oropharyngeal SCC were eligible for this Phase II study. Patients needed the physiologic reserve for surgery and technically resectable tumors. Induction carboplatin (area under the curve = 6) and paclitaxel (200 mg/m2) × 2 cycles (q21 days) were given. Objective responders received definitive radiotherapy (XRT), 70 Gy/7 weeks with concurrent weekly paclitaxel. Initially, the dose of paclitaxel was 50 mg/m2/week; because of mucosal toxicity it was reduced to 30 mg/m2/week. Patients with N2-3 disease received post-XRT neck dissection and 2 more cycles of “adjuvant” chemotherapy. In the first 22 patients, the neutropenic fever rate was 27%. Although there has been no grade IV-V toxicity from induction therapy, grade II-III toxicity resulted in an unacceptable delay in starting XRT in 14% of patients. The response rate to induction chemotherapy was 91%. Grade III mucositis occurred in all patients during concurrent chemoradiotherapy. One patient died of pneumonia during concurrent chemoradiotherapy after receiving 26 Gy and 3 doses of paclitaxel 50 mg/m2. No dose-limiting toxicity occurred in 15 patients treated with concurrent paclitaxel 30 mg/m2/week. Actuarial overall survival at 18 months is 82%; local–regional control is 86%. To date, distant metastases have not developed in any patients. This regimen has intense but acceptable acute toxicity. The maximum tolerated dosage of weekly paclitaxel during standard continuous-course XRT is confirmed to be 30 mg/m2/week. The treatment efficacy of this regimen (response rate and short-term local–regional and distant control) is encouraging. Accrual continues to obtain long-term toxicity, efficacy, and quality-of-life data.

Abstract:Statement of problem: Cobalt chromium (Co-Cr) alloys possess beneficial mechanical properties because alloys, even in thin sections, can resist high mastication forces and exhibit an acceptable bond to the surface porcelain layer. Traditional manufacturing techniques of Co-Cr alloys such as casting have been replaced with newer fabrication techniques, such as milling, laser melting, and presintered milling. Despite scarce documentation, these new manufacturing techniques are being used to fabricate dental and implant constructions. Purpose: This in vitro study investigates the hardness, yield strength, elastic modulus, and microstructure of the most commonly used Co-Cr alloys for fixed prosthodontics based on manufacturing technique. In addition, this study investigates the effect of heat treatment on the mechanical properties and microstructure of these materials. Material and methods: Five Co-Cr alloys were included (dumbbell and rectangular shaped) based on four manufacturing techniques: cast, milled, laser melted, and presintered milled. Commercially pure titanium grade 4 and titanium-6 aluminum-4 vanadium ELI (extra low interstitial) were included for comparison, and yield strength and elongation after fracture were evaluated. The specimens were tested for hardness using the Vickers test and for elastic modulus using a nondestructive impulse excitation technique. The microstructure of selected specimens was analyzed using focused ion beam-scanning electron microscopy (FIB-SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Results: The mechanical properties depend on the manufacturing technique used; the laser-melted and presintered Co-Cr specimens demonstrated the highest mechanical properties, followed by the milled and cast groups. Both the laser-melted and the presintered milled Co-Cr specimens showed smaller grain size compared with the cast and milled Co-Cr specimens. The titanium-6 aluminum-4 vanadium ELI demonstrated higher hardness and yield strength compared to commercially pure titanium grade 4. No major differences were observed for the selected materials regarding the mechanical properties and microstructural appearance after heat treatment. Conclusions: The laser melting and presintered milling techniques produced higher mechanical properties compared with the cast and milled Co-Cr. These findings were confirmed through microstructural analysis with respect to the grain size, precipitation, and number of pores.

Abstract:Stable infants with anaemia needing a transfusion with adult red blood‐cells were studied to elucidate changes in brain blood‐flow velocity. Within 24 hours and at five to six days following transfusion a substantial mean flow velocity reduction was observed. Haemodynamic factors contributing to the reduction were an increase in cerebrovascular resistance and an increase in whole blood viscosity, as reflected by a raised pulsatility index. Transfusion with adult red blood‐cells causes an elevation in haemoglobin concentration, thereby increasing the total oxygen‐carrying capacity of arterial blood; however, this lowers the concentration of fetal haemoglobin which possesses a higher affinity for oxygen. Since cerebral oxygen transport is equal to the product of cerebral blood‐flow and arterial oxygen content, this finding suggests the existence of a homeostatic mechanism for cerebral oxygen transport. The actual amount of cerebral oxygen transport was found to increase progressively as the percentage of fetal haemoglobin rose above 30 per cent. At higher fetal haemoglobin levels, appropriate elevations in cerebral blood‐flow occurred, causing an increase in the supply of oxygen to the brain.

Abstract:The popularity of the base metal alloys has increased in the past decade because of their lower price, high tensile strength and high elastic modulus. Several factors are critical in ensuring successful bonding: the matching of the thermal coefficients of expansion and constraction of the porcelain and metal, the metallurgic composition of the alloy and the pretreatment procedures used in preparation of the metal substructure. Two ceramic base alloys (one alloy contains beryllium, another without) were studied. The surface textures were created by 50 microns, 100 microns aluminum oxide sandblasting, carbide bur, carborundum point and disk upon two base alloys, Rexillium III and Wiron 88. The purposes of this investigation were to determine how these variations in surface texture affect the bond strength of the two ceramo-metal alloy systems. The following results were obtained: 1. Statistics revealed that bond strength was not significantly increased with surface roughness (p > 0.05). 2. The shear bond strength for variable pretreatment methods were in the following sequence: 100 microns Al2O3 sandblasting, carbide bur, 50 microns Al2O3 sandblasting, carborundum point, disk. 3. The Rexillium III alloy had a significantly higher bond strength than Wiron 88 alloy (p < 0.05). 4. The Noritake porcelain showed a significantly higher bond strength than Biobond porcelain (p < 0.05). 5. The fracture site was cohesive and adhesive mode treated with 50 microns Al2O3, 100 microns Al2O3, carbide bur. But carborundum point and disk was adhesive mode.
Effect of two heat treatments on mechanical properties of selective-laser-melted Co-Cr metal-ceramic alloys for application in thin removable partial dentures

Abstract:Statement of problem: Heat treatment has been used to reduce the residual stress of alloys fabricated by selective laser melting (SLM) to avoid deformation. Co-Cr metal-ceramic alloys are used to fabricate metal-ceramic restorations and removable partial dentures (RPDs) on the same substrate by SLM. A heat treatment that enables the fabrication of metal-ceramic restorations and RPDs with excellent mechanical properties should be evaluated. Purpose: The purpose of this in vitro study was to determine the effects of 2 heat treatments on the mechanical properties of SLM Co-Cr metal-ceramic alloys intended for the fabrication of thin RPDs. Material and methods: Tensile bars were manufactured using cast metal-ceramics (C-MC group), RPD alloys (C-RPD group), and SLM Co-Cr metal-ceramic alloys. The SLM specimens were subjected to 2 different heat treatments, L1 at 880°C and L2 at 1100°C, and were further divided into subgroups (L1-MC, L1-RPD, L2-MC, and L2-RPD). Thirty-six tensile specimens were prepared in C-RPD, L1-RPD, and L2-RPD (simulated partial denture alloys for clinical use) and in C-MC, L1-MC, and L2-MC (simulated metal-ceramic alloys); 18 metal-ceramic bond strength specimens were prepared in C-MC, L1-MC, and L2-MC groups (n=6). The tensile test and 3-point bend test were conducted using a universal testing machine. The fracture surfaces of the L2-RPD tensile bar were examined using a scanning electron microscope. The Student t test (α=.05) was used for statistical analysis. Results: No significant differences were observed between the bond strengths of L1-MC and C-MC (P=.74) or between those of L2-MC and C-MC (P=.124). The 0.2% yield strength (σ0.2) and elongation of all SLM specimens exceeded the minimum requirements required for the fabrication of thin RPDs as prescribed in ISO 22674:2016. The σ0.2 value of L1-MC and L2-MC was significantly higher than that of C-MC. Significant differences in σ0.2 values were found among the 3 RPD groups, L1-RPD>L2-RPD>C-RPD. For the elongation, significant differences were found among the 3 groups, L2-RPD>C-RPD>L1-RPD. The fracture surface of L2-RPD showed clear submicroscale dimples with fusion defects. Conclusions: When Co-Cr metal copings and RPD frameworks were fabricated on the same substrate simultaneously using SLM, heat treatment at 1100°C was found more suitable than at 880°C to release residual stress, considering the toughness required for dental prostheses.
Microstructural, mechanical, ionic release and tarnish resistance characterization of porcelain fused to metal Co-Cr alloys manufactured via casting and three different CAD/CAM techniques

Abstract:Purpose: To perform a comparative analysis of the microstructure, porosity, mechanical properties, corrosion, and tarnish resistance of Co-Cr alloys prepared by casting and three different computer aided designed/computer aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) techniques. Methods: Four groups of metallic specimens were prepared, one each by conventional casting (CST), milling (MIL), selective laser melting (SLM), and milling soft metal (MSM). Ten samples were tested by X-rays, after which their microstructure and elemental composition were tested by scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDX) analysis. Martens hardness (HM) and elastic index (ηIT) were determined by instrumented indentation testing (IIT), while modulus of elasticity (E) was determined by three-point bending. Corrosion measurements were tested according to International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 10271. The electrolytes were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES). The results were analyzed by one-way ANOVA and Holm-Sidak's multiple-comparison test (α=0.05). Results: The CST group illustrated internal flaws while all CAD/CAM group samples were found to be free of them. No statistically significant differences were identified among groups in their elemental composition. SLM showed the highest HM, followed by the MIL, CST, and MSM. Elastic index showed significant differences among all groups, with CST showing the lowest and SLM the highest values. SLM showed the highest elastic modulus values, followed by MSM, MIL, and CST. No significant differences were found in ionic release among groups. No surface deterioration after static and cyclic tarnish testing was determined. Conclusions: The manufacturing procedure significantly affects the microstructure, porosity, and mechanical properties of Co-Cr alloys. In contrast, ionic release and tarnish resistance are independent of the manufacturing technique used.

Abstract:Purpose In this paper, the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of CoCr alloy fabricated by selective laser melting (SLM) were studied, and the changes of performance after porcelain sintering process were also analysed. This study is to point out the relationship between the microstructure, mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of CoCr alloys prepared by SLM after porcelain sintering process. In addition, the biosafety of the sintered CoCr alloy was evaluated. Design/methodology/approach The microscopic feature changes of CoCr alloy samples after porcelain sintering process were observed by DMI 5000 M inverted metallographic microscope and Nova Nano430 FE-SEM. Moreover, phase identification and determination were conducted by X-ray diffraction (XRD) using Smartlab X-ray diffractometer. The Vickers microhardness was measured on the HVS-30 microhardness tester, and tensile tests were carried out on a CM3505 electronic universal testing machine. The corrosion resistance was tested by a classical three-point electrode system electrochemical method, then the ion precipitation was measured by using an atomic absorption spectrometer of Z2000 7JQ8024. Findings The XRD results indicate that the transition of γ phase (FCC) to e phase (HCP) occurs during the porcelain sintering processing of CoCr alloy. Moreover, the Vickers microhardness of the upper surface and the side surface of the CoCr alloy sample was improved by more than 36%. In addition, the ultimate strength of CoCr alloy via porcelain sintering treatment was increase to 1,395.3 ± 53.0 MPa compared to 1,282.7 ± 10.1 MPa of unprocessed CoCr alloy. However, the corrosion resistance of CoCr alloy samples decreases after porcelain sintering process. Originality/value There are few studies on the relationship of microstructure, mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of CoCr alloys prepared by SLM after porcelain sintering process. In this study, the microstructure, mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of CoCr alloy after porcelain sintering process were studied, and the biosafety of the alloy was evaluated. The research found that it is feasible to apply CoCr alloy fabricated by SLM to dental medicine after porcelain sintering process.

Abstract:Statement of problem The surface topography of metal substrate can affect its bond to porcelain. A neodynium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd:YAG) laser has been introduced to modify the metal surface topography and improve porcelain bond strength. However, studies on the effect of laser etching on metal to porcelain bond strength are lacking. Purpose The purpose of this in vitro study was to determine the effect of Nd:YAG laser etching on the surface roughness and wettability of and the porcelain bond strength to cobalt chromium (Co-Cr) substrate fabricated by milling and direct metal laser sintering (DMLS). Material and methods Thirty-two 0.5×3×25-mm Co-Cr specimens were fabricated by milling soft Co-Cr (M group) and DMLS Co-Cr metal powder (DML group). The surface topography of representative specimens from each study group was assessed under a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and an atomic force microscope (AFM). All specimens were assessed for surface roughness using a contact profilometer, and for wettability with a contact angle goniometer. Half of the specimens of each study group (n=8) were subjected to surface laser etching by using a Nd:YAG laser. The specimens subjected to etching were assessed again for surface topography and wettability. All specimens in both study groups were veneered with porcelain. The porcelain bond strength was tested with a 3-point bend test in a universal testing machine. The results were statistically analyzed with 2-way ANOVA test followed by the post hoc Tukey test for pairwise comparisons (α=.05). Results After etching, the M group had a higher mean ±standard deviation Ra and Rz of 2.9 ±0.6 and 17.7 ±3.2 μm and significantly better wettability and bond strength of 79 ±6 and 52 ±13 MPa. In contrast, after etching, the DMLS group had a significantly lower Ra and Rz of 7.9 ±2.4 and 41.8 ±9.3 μm and significantly lower wettability and bond strength of 87 ±4 and 70 ±10 MPa. The DMLS group had a significantly higher roughness and bond strength than the M group before and after laser etching. The SEM and AFM showed different surface topography in the study groups. Conclusions The manufacturing process of Co-Cr substrate had a significant effect on surface characteristics and porcelain bond strength. Laser etching improved the surface topography and bond strength of milled Co-Cr but not of DMLS Co-Cr.
