Abstract:Design and performance of ground source heat pump depended on the thermal conductivity of the backfilled material. Mathematic definitions of parameters, such as density, water content and saturation, etc., describing the performance of backfilled material used for vertical-buried and closed-loop ground source heat pump (GSHP) were given, and that the main factors affecting thermal conductivity of backfilled material were density and water content. Laboratory tests based on the principle of flat probe for the measurement of thermal conductivity changing with materials selection and mix design, maintaining time and temperature were undertaken, and the results were analyzed and prepared into some curves. The experimental results showed that the bentonite is not suitable for backfilled material lonely, and it should be mixed with cement in unsaturated state. The thermal conductivity increases with decreasing water/cement ratio. It is an effective method for increasing the thermal conductivity by adding granular fillers. An increase of sand content can increase the thermal conductivity linearly. As water/cement ratio is 0.45 and ratio of sand replacement is 80%, the backfilled material has satisfactory thermal conductivity, and is thus recommended in practical engineering of GSHP.

Abstract:Ground heat exchanger is a key part of ground source heat pump system (GSHPs), including some geotechni-cal engineering technology. Based on the practical engineering of an international cooperation, related geotechnical engineering technologies are studied, that are engineering drilling, physical properties, especially thermal physical character-istic of ground layer and backfilling material and grouting engineering. The results indicate that, geotechnical engineering in GSHP is a complicated project, and a set of construction method given in this paper can be referred.

Abstract:This paper presents a new method to determine the thermal properties of soil for a vertical-bore-hole ground-source heat pump. The method proposed is the result of combining the experimental and numerical study with the parameter estimation technique. The experimental study is an in situ thermal response test and the numerical study is the solution of the model of heat transfer inside/outside the borehole. The results show that the parameters including the soil thermal conductivity, borehole thermal resistance, and soil thermal diffusivity are accurately obtained and verified with the aid of experimental data. The method can accommodate well to the variable heat input conditions, and also it concludes that the models of heat transfer inside/outside the borehole are feasible to simulate the borehole heat transfer process.

Abstract:Based on the law of mass and energy conservation and the one-dimensional model of heat transfer, a heat and moisture transfer line source model for the ground-source heat pump system has been developed. Numerical simulation results in summer working conditioning indicate that the affect of moisture transfer in soil was mainly around the U-type tube. When the soil moisture content is high, the capacity of heat transfer in soil is good. The heat transfer capacity of the ground heat exchanger calculated by the model in this work is lower than those which are calculated by the common heat transfer model. When the initial soil moisture content is about 0.1, the difference calculated by the two model is about 18%.

Abstract:Ground thermal properties, including the thermal conductivity and diffusivity of both soil and grout, are significant considerations for the design of a ground-coupled heat pump (GCHP) system. However, as a result of the limitations inherent in available response models, few in-situ thermal response tests (TRTs) can identify grout thermal conductivity and diffusivity. This paper proposes a new method to estimate the thermal conductivity and diffusivity of both soil and grout simultaneously using the recently developed infinite composite-medium line source (ICMLS) model. Firstly, a linear dependence analysis is performed on the aforementioned four parameters to ensure the feasibility of the proposed method, leading to an estimation of the minimum TRT duration. Secondly, uncertainty analysis is carried out to analyze the influence of U-pipe shank spacing, as it is considered a sensitive parameter in modeling the heat transfer of ground heat exchangers (GHEs). Thirdly, a genetic algorithm is used to identify these four parameters using the data collected from a TRT. The proposed method is verified using a well-designed sandbox experiment. Finally, its application is demonstrated and evaluated by applying it to the design of a GCHP system for an office building at Hunan University.

Abstract:In this article, by applying the heat conduction equation for semi-infinite objects to the soil around the vertical well of a soil source heat pump system, the variation regularity of daily mean temperature of soil was obtained. Annual amplitudes of the daily mean temperatures at different soil depths were calculated on the bases of geological survey and a whole year measurement of the ground surface temperature, according to which the approximate well depth of the soil source heat pump system was determined. The high coefficient of performance (COP) of this soil source heat pump system validated the determination of the vertical well depth.

Abstract:By analyzing the unsteady heat transfer of vertical embedded pipe for ground source heat pump, a transient cylindrical source model is verified based on the thermal response experiment. Meanwhile, the thermal short-circuit modification is also applied to correct the mean temperature of the circulating water. Besides, a new model to predict the temperature of the borehole wall is developed for reference based on the semi-infinite theory.With the thermal response test device developed by ourselves, two experimental boreholes located in Shanghai were tested in summer. The interior relations among the thermal property parameters are discussed based on the experimental data, of which the change of density specific heat capacity in normal range has little effect on the calculation results of ground conductivity and borehole thermal resistance, so it's considered constant, while the other two parameters need to be determined by calculation. Other influence factors, including selection of the initial time and thermal short-circuit, are researched as well.Through comparing the calculation result of the mean circulating temperature with the experimental data, the accuracy of the thermal property parameters calculated is verified.

Abstract:Geothermal energy is a renewable energy source for heating, ventilating and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems, and is leveraged by ground heat exchanger (GHE) which is a key element of ground source heat pump (GSHP). The performance of GHE is significantly affected by soil thermal properties. To explore the heat transfer characteristics of soils with different moisture contents (MC) and seepage, a well-controlled sandbox was established and a series of experiments were performed. The results demonstrated that the soil with higher MC had stronger heat dissipation capacity, especially when seepage occurred. The temperature sensor 25 cm from the sandbox-centre detected temperature changes at the 452nd, 206th and 297th min under dry, unsaturated and saturated conditions, respectively. Moreover, the dominant mode of heat transfer in soils with different MCs was conduction, and the elevated heat-releasing rate enhanced heat propagation by moisture transfer. Furthermore, the size of the thermally affected zone was proportional to the thermal diffusivity, which was 2.14 × 10−7, 5.18 × 10−7 and 4.74 × 10−7 m2/s under dry, unsaturated and saturated conditions, respectively. Overall, these results indicate that the MC is a critical factor in characterizing soil heat transfer. This study provides guidance in choosing the installation environment for GHE and confirms the importance of matching soil characteristics with the GHE load.

Abstract:Ground source heat pump (GSHP) technology has gained significant attention as a viable solution for the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) of buildings. One of the factors that can impact the performance of GSHP systems is the soil moisture content. In this study, an innovative approach, referred to as soil impedance topology, is introduced as an alternative to traditional methods for measuring soil moisture content in geothermal heat pump systems. This method is inspired by pipeline grid utilizes impedance measurement, which provides a direct measurement of soil moisture content without the need for sensors. The study also proposes a changing rule of impedance with varying moisture content, where capacitance increases and resistance decreases when the soil moisture content is less than 20% but stabilizes beyond a water content of 20%. The accuracy of the topological mechanism prediction method is high, as demonstrated through the verification of the Smith circle and measured data. However, it is noted that the performance may be insufficient in the high frequency band and high soil moisture content. The use of impedance topology provides a more accurate and reliable method for measuring soil moisture content as well as for modeling and predicting heat transfer rates and system performance. This technology has strong potential to improve efficiency, reduce energy costs, and enhance the environmental sustainability of geothermal heat pump systems.

Abstract:A new test model of soil thermal properties was presented based on the assimilate heat and electricity theory and the corresponding test platform was established. Then the experimental test was carried out and the test date was analysed. It obtained the soil thermal properties of Xi'an area and proved the accuracy of this mode. The new test mode offered a new way of testing the soil thermal properties. It has positive significance for the extension of ground source heat pump.

Abstract:A three dimensional numerical model of ground source heat pump system was established, and the effects of testing time, starting time, borehole radius, initial ground temperature and heat injection rate on identified thermal conductivity of the deep ground soil were analyzed based on the numerical model. The simulation results showed that the identified thermal conductivity decreases with an increase in borehole radius based on column-source method. For parameter estimation, the measuring accuracy of the initial temperature of the deep ground soil has greater effect on identified thermal conductivity. The deviations of measured heat conductivities are within 6%~18%.

Abstract:Heat‐pulse sensor measurements analyzed with pulsed infinite line source (PILS) theory have been widely used to measure soil properties. The PILS theory assumes that the measured soil medium is uniform and infinite. When the sensors are positioned near the soil surface, the effects of the heterogeneity associated with the soil–air interface should not be ignored. In 1999, Philip and Kluitenberg (PK99) proposed an analytical solution using an instantaneous heating model to analyze the effects of the soil–air interface on soil thermal property measurements with heat‐pulse sensors. The purpose of this study is to test the PK99 instantaneous heat source solution under controlled laboratory conditions. Soil thermal properties including volumetric heat capacity, thermal diffusivity, and thermal conductivity were measured with a commercially available dual‐needle heat‐pulse sensor buried at different depths beneath the soil surface. Three soil materials, sand, loamy sand, and sandy clay loam, were tested at both air‐dry and saturated moisture conditions. With shallow sensor burial, measured thermal properties were underestimated by up to 50%, similar to the predicted thermal properties from the PK99 analytical solution, due to the effects of the soil–air interface. Using PK99 to adjust thermal property values obtained from shallow sensors has potential to improve estimates of water content, evaporation, and other soil measurements derived from heat‐pulse sensors.

Abstract:In recent years, the ground source heat pump (GSHP) system has been widely used due to its high unit efficiency, considerable energy conservation and low operating cost. However, the heat transfer efficiency of ground heat exchangers (GHE) in some projects decreases year by year. This results in the decrease of performance of the GHSP system. This is mainly because of lacking of the deep research about the heat and moisture transfer influence on the GHE in unsaturated soil. In this paper, a new model for predicting the soil thermal conductivity under different temperatures was developed. By comparing with the Campbell and de V-1 models, the new model showed better performance on predicting the soil thermal conductivity. Thereafter, a coupled heat and moisture transfer model in unsaturated soil was established for the GHE. In addition, the mode1 was verified by comparing its results against those established by other researchers. By the results, it was found that the model calculation results agreed well with the experimental data in the literature. Finally, the effects of different factors, including the soil types, soil porosity on the characteristics of the GHE were studied.

Abstract:Accurate and fast measurements of thermal properties are frequently required for characterizing the heat‐water dynamics in frozen soil. Measuring the thermal properties of frozen soil without inducing ice thaw has proven challenging with conventional heat pulse (HP) methods. In this study, based on an Infinite Line Source (ILS) semi‐analytical model that applies a constant temperature lower than the freezing point at the heat source to prevent the initiation of ice thaw in the frozen soil, we propose a novel HP‐based approach to measure thermal properties, applicable at temperatures below or above 0°C. Laboratory experiments and numerical modeling were utilized to validate the applicability of the approach and optimization strategies of the measurement. We found that the proposed HP‐based approach effectively maintained the maximum spatial temperature below the freezing point and therefore estimated the bulk thermal properties of quartz sand and ice contents. An optimized measurement strategy was proposed to monitor the temperature variations 2–4 cm away from the center of the heat probe after 60 s. This progress can largely facilitate the determination of the thermal properties of multi‐phase and ‐component frozen soil such as thermal conductivity, heat flux, and ice content in cold areas across soil science, hydrology, engineering, and climate science.

Abstract:To design an efficient ground source heat pump (GSHP) system, it is important to accurately measure the thermophysical parameters of the geotechnical layer. In the current study, a borehole is tested in detail using a combined thermal response test system (CTRTS) based on a distributed optical fiber temperature sensor (DOFTS) and a laboratory test. Real-time monitoring of the stratum temperature according to depth and operation time and the geothermal profile and thermal conductivity of each stratum are obtained. The results show that the undisturbed ground temperature is 10.0 °C, and the formation temperature field within 130 m can be divided into variable temperature formation, constant temperature formation (9.13 °C), and warming formation (geothermal gradient is 3.0 °C/100 m). The comprehensive thermal conductivity of the region is 1.862 W/m·K. From top to bottom, the average thermal conductivity of silty clay, mudstone, argillaceous siltstone, and mudstone is 1.631 W/m·K, 1.888 W/m·K, 1.862 W/m·K, and 2.144 W/m·K, respectively. By comparing the measurement results, the accuracy and effectiveness of the CTRTS are verified. Therefore, it is recommended to use the thermal conductivity obtained by the CTRTS to optimize the design of the borehole heat exchanger (BHE). This study provides a case for establishing a standard distributed thermal response test (DTRT).
Measuring Near-Surface Soil Thermal Properties with the Heat-Pulse Method: Correction of Ambient Temperature and Soil–Air Interface Effects

Abstract:Large temperature gradients and proximity to the soil-air interface affect the measurement accuracy of thermal properties with the heat-pulse probe (HPP). The objective of this study is to improve the HPP methodology for measuring soil heat capacity (C) and thermal conductivity (l) in the surface soil layer by reducing the effects of ambient temperature variation and the soil-air interface. Thermal properties of eight soil layers (0-6, 2-6, 6-12, 12-18, 18-24, 24-30, 30-36, and 36-42 mm) were measured with the HPP in a loamy sand soil in two experiments with varying moisture conditions. Results were compared with values estimated with the de Vries models. Temperature drift caused by natural warming and cooling was removed from the observed trend of ambient temperature change with time. The influence of the soil-air interface was taken into account with a new solution using pulsed infinite line source theory with adiabatic boundary conditions. When ambient temperature change was considered, the HPP were capable of providing reasonable thermal property results at soil depths greater than 6 mm. For the 0- to 6-mm depth layer, the HPP signals were affected simultaneously by ambient temperature drift and the soil-air interface, and mixed scenarios were produced. Around midday, the HPP temperature by time curves were distorted so seriously that the effect of ambient temperature drift could not be removed. At other times, large errors were observed in the estimated C and l data, even when ambient temperature drift was removed. When the effect of the soil-air interface was accounted for, however, C and l measurement accuracies in the 0- to 6-mm layer were improved significantly. The RMSE of C was reduced from 0.43 MJ m(-3) degrees C-1 to 0.29 MJ m(-3) degrees C-1 in Exp. 1, and from 0.52 MJ m(-3) degrees C-1 to 0.34 MJ m(-3) degrees C-1 in Exp. 2. Significant error reduction was also observed in l measurements. Thus, to obtain accurate field measurements of shallow soil thermal properties, the ambient temperature drift and the impact of the soil-air interface must be properly taken into account.

Abstract:The heat transfer capacity of ground and soil energy sources is the key factor that affects the performance of the ground source heat exchanger. The heat storage capacity of soil is related to various factors. The author proposes a multi-component heat pump system which combines solar energy, waste heat, and air, and designs a new type of dual channel finned tube evaporator for defrosting. Based on different weather conditions, the operation mode of the system was provided, and performance tests were conducted on the system under no light conditions and with or without waste heat utilization. The results show that the seepage speed of buried tube ground source heat pump system geographic tube heat exchanger and soil heat transfer influence is larger, the groundwater seepage speed of 15 m per annual, running 3-4 years later, the heat transfer well area of the soil temperature field will be stable, which can judge in the groundwater seepage is sufficient area, the buried tube ground source heat pump conditional soil winter and summer heat balance.

Abstract:A ground-coupled heat pump system using heat recovery technology was developed for a cooling-dominated building. According to experimental results, an increment in soil temperature of about 0.5 degrees C was observed after one year of operation. The long-term performance analysis shows that the increase in soil temperature is one third of that without heat recovery. The higher the set value of indoor temperature, the lower is the increase in soil temperature after long-term operation. The distance between the boreholes is suggested to be 4-5 m in urban areas with limited space for the installation of ground heat exchangers. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
