Abstract:In the current work, the reactions of [60]fullerene with alkynes promoted by OH − (base) are addressed. The treatment of C 60 with alkynes in the presence of TBAOH produces alkynylation products (R-C 60 –H) with high selectivity in o -DCB at 100 °C. Plausible reaction mechanisms were proposed. This work provides a convenient and environmental friendly method for the functionalization of fullerenes.

Abstract:[GRAPHICS]Treatment of C-70 with cycloalkylaminomethylenebisphosphonates in the presence of NaH gave corresponding C-70 dimers 1 in good yield, while the methanofullerenes, C-70 > CH(PO3Et2) (3) and C-70 > C(PO3Et2)(2) (4) or C-60 > CH(PO3Et2) (5) and C-60 > C(PO3Et2)(2) (6), were obtained, respectively, by the reaction of C-70 of C-60 with tetraethyl methylenediphosphonate in the presence of NaH. Diethyl cyanornethylphosphonate reacted with C-60 of C-70 under similar conditions to afford C-60 > C(PO3Et2)CN (7) and C-70 > C(PO3Et2)CN (8). Furthermore, the presence of weak electronic interactions between two fullerene cages of fullerene dimers was demonstrated by cyclic voltammetry. A radical mechanism was proposed for the formation of the fullerene derivatives on the basis of the ESR studies.

Abstract:Hexachloro[60]fullerene, C60Cl6, was reacted with a mixture of ROH/H2O (R = Me, Et, n-Pr, (CH2)(2)C CH) to form both C60Cl(OH)(OR)(4) and C60Cl(OR)(5). Only the C60Cl(OH)(OR)(4) were isolated with bulky alcohols, ROH (R = (CH2)(3)C CH, (CH2)(4)C CH). Tetrahydro[60]fullerene epoxides, C-60(O)(OR)(4), were prepared by treating C60Cl(OH)(OR)(4) with CuI. The epoxy moiety could be hydrolyzed to the vicinal diol derivatives, C-60(OH)(2)(OR)(4), and then oxidized to form dicarbonyl open-cage fullerenes, C60O2(OR)(4). CuI was found to convert the terminal alkynyl addends into iodoalkynyl addends on the C-60 cage.

Abstract:A novel Ag(I)-induced three-component annulation reaction of [60]fullerene with sulfonylhydrazones and nitriles has been developed for the efficient synthesis of diverse disubstituted [60]fullerene-fused dihydropyrroles. The reaction exhibits a broad substrate scope and excellent functional-group tolerance, and also allows for the synthesis of fullerene-bound macromolecules.

Abstract:By a reaction of trimethylphosphine with an open‐[60]fullerene, corresponding dimers could be generated via two‐fold deoxygenation processes even though the formation of β‐oxo‐phosphorous ylide is inevitable, a part of which is hydrolyzed to yield an α‐methylene carbonyl derivative. Nevertheless, Wittig reaction and aldol condensation did not proceed well, indicating the presence of an unknown dimerization pathway. In the ylide formation, 1‐phosphonium‐3‐carbabetaine was previously proposed as a key intermediate. Upon assuming that the betaine also participates in the dimerization process, we examined a possible reaction pathway computationally. As the results, the betaine formed by a reaction with the first phosphine was suggested to undergo nucleophilic addition to an unreacted molecule of the open‐[60]fullerene, yielding an epoxide dimer which is then deoxygenated by the second phosphine to furnish the desired open‐[60]fullerene dimer.

Abstract:The DBU-promoted three-component coupling reaction of H-phosphonates, [60]fullerene, and alkyl bromides has been developed as a facile and efficient protocol for the one-pot synthesis of various 1,4-(phosphonyl)(organo)[60]fullerenes. This method exhibits high regioselectivity at the 1,4-position on the [60]fullerene core and features a metal-free nature, easy operation, low cost, and a wide range of substrates.

Abstract:[60]Fullerene mixed peroxides C60(O)(OOtBu)4 exhibit chemo- and regioselective reactions under mild conditions. The epoxy moiety is opened by ferric chloride to form vicinal hydroxy chloride C60Cl(OH)(OOtBu)4. BF3 is also effective in opening the epoxy moiety. The O-O bond of the fullerene mixed peroxide is cleaved by aluminum chloride to form both [5,6]- and [6,6]-fullerene hemiketals (oxohomo[60]fullerenes). A Hock-type rearrangement is proposed for the formation of the hemiketals, in which a fullerene C-C bond is cleaved. Lewis acids and/or visible light can initiate isomerization of the hemiketal isomers. Single-crystal X-ray analysis and theoretical calculations confirmed the results.

Abstract:The unique reactivity and synthetic applications of oxime acetate derivatives with N, O and S substituents at the α‐position are disclosed for the first time, which leads to 2‐substituted fulleropyrrolidines and mono‐ and disubstituted 1‐fulleropyrrolines via copper‐catalyzed redox‐neutral N‐heteroannulation reactions with C60. This transformation is operationally simple and has a broad substrate scope and good functional group tolerance. Theoretical calculations at the level of B3LYP/6‐31G(d) were performed to elucidate the chemoselectivity of the reaction.

Abstract:The thermal reaction of [60] fullerene (C-60) with the carbonyl ylides generated in situ from trans-epoxides to give C-60-fused tetrahydrofuran derivatives has been investigated. The reaction of C-60 with trans-2-benzoyl-3-aryloxiranes afforded only cis-products, while the reaction of C-60 with 2-cyano-2-ethoxycarbonyl-3-aryloxiranes gave exclusively or predominantly cis isomers. The isomeric distributions of the latter reactions were drastically affected by the substituent on the phenyl ring.

Abstract:Comprehensive Summary Regioselective electrochemical hydroalkylations of [60]fullerene‐fused furochromenone with alky halides under different acidic conditions unexpectedly afford three types of tetra‐functionalized [60]fullerene derivatives in high yields. When acetic acid is used as the proton source, two 1,2,3,4‐adducts with retained or rearranged five‐membered heterocycle are obtained as major and minor products, respectively. While trifluoroacetic acid is employed as the proton source, 1,2,3,16‐adducts and 1,2,3,4‐adducts, both with the five‐membered heterocycle rearranged from [6,6]‐junction to [5,6]‐junction, are generated. Intriguingly, the obtained 1,2,3,16‐adducts can be transformed into 1,2,3,4‐adducts accompanied by rearrangement of the fused five‐membered heterocycle from [5,6]‐junction to [6,6]‐junction. These products have been characterized by spectroscopic data and single‐crystal X‐ray analysis. Moreover, the two 1,2,3,4‐adducts with the heterocycle fused to [5,6]‐junction or [6,6]‐junction show diagnostic UV‐vis spectra, which may be useful for the identification of these two types of 1,2,3,4‐adducts in the future. A plausible reaction mechanism has been proposed to elucidate the formation of hydroalkylation products in the presence of different acids. This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Aminopolycarboxylic esters react with C-60 under photolysis to produce fullerene multicarboxylates. Irradiation of tetramethyl ethylenediaminetetraacetate (EDTA) with C-60 yields the EDTA-containing fullerene monoadduct C-60(MeOOCCH)(2)NCH2CH2N(CH2COOMe)(2). In addition, several other C-60 monoadducts are also isolated and characterized, including compounds due to EDTA fragmentation. Similar results are observed with pentamethyldimethylenetriaminepentaaceta (DTPA). When partially methylated nitrilotriacetic acid is irradiated with C-60, decarboxylation occurs and organo dihydrofullerene derivatives such as C-60(H)(CH2N(CH2COOMe)(2)) are formed. Radical mechanisms are proposed for both types of photoreactions. The fullerene derivatives are characterized by their spectroscopic data. Photoreactions of C-60 with other analogous molecules also support the conclusions.

This transformation exhibits a remarkably broad substrate scope and functional group tolerance and provides a useful method to a scarce class of fullerene derivatives.

Abstract:tert-Butylperoxy radicals generated by TBHP and Ru(PPh3)3Cl2 or other catalysts adds to C60 and C70 to form stable multiadducts, C60(O)(OOtBu)4 and C70(OOtBu)10. The four tert-butylperoxy groups in the C60 mixed peroxide are located around a pentagon, and the epoxy O occupies the remaining 6,6-bond connected to the same pentagon. The C70 decaadduct shows an unprecedented C2 symmetry with the 10 tert-butylperoxy groups added around the central part of C70 by consecutive 1,4-addition. The compounds are fully characterized by spectroscopic data.

Abstract:Photoinduced reactions of tertiary amines with [60]fullerene (C-60) were successfully applied to the synthesis of [60]fulleroalkaloids. This method is easy and effective for constructing C60 derivatives containing natural alkaloids for the purpose of checking the influence of the carbon cage on the biological activities of the alkaloids. In this letter, the preparation and characterization of [60]fulleroscandine is reported.

Abstract:tert-Butylperoxy radicals add to C(60) selectively to form multi-adducts C(60)(O)(m)(OO(t)Bu)(n) (m = 0, n = 2, 4, 6; m = 1, n = 0, 2, 4, 6) in moderate yields under various conditions. Visible light irradiation favors epoxide formation. High concentration of tert-butylperoxy radicals mainly produces the hexa-homoadduct C(60)(OO(t)Bu)(6) 6; low concentration and long reaction time favor the epoxy-containing C(60)(O)(OO(t)Bu)(4) 7. The reaction can be stopped at the bis-adducts with limited TBHP. A stepwise addition mechanism is discussed involving mono-, allyl-, and cyclopentadienyl C(60) radical intermediates. m-CPBA reacts with the 1,4-bis-adduct to form C(60)(O)(OO(t)Bu)(2) and C(60)(O)(3)(OO(t)Bu)(2). The C-O bond of the epoxy ring in 7 can be cleaved with HNO(3) and CF(3)COOH. Nucleophilic addition of NaOMe to 7 follows the S(N)1 and extended S(N)2' mechanism, from which four products are isolated with the general formula C(60)(O)(a)(OH)(b)(OMe)(c)(OO(t)Bu)(d). Visible light irradiation of the hexa-adduct 6 results in partial cleavage of both the C-O and O-O bonds of peroxide moieties and formation of the cage-opened compound C(60)(O)(O)(2)(OO(t)Bu)(4). All the fullerene derivatives are characterized by spectroscopic data. A single-crystal structure has been obtained for an isomer of C(60)(O)(OH)(2)(OMe)(4)(OO(t)Bu)(2).

Abstract:The reaction of [60]fullerene (C60) with nitrile ylides generated from N-benzyl-4-nitrobenzimidoyl chloride/N-(4-chlorobenzyl)-4-nitrobenzimidoyl chloride and triethylamine gave only isomeric monoadducts of C60 with [6,6]-closed structure. No [5,6]-open adduct of C60 could be identified from these reactions. The previously reported [5,6]-open product of C60 should be reassigned as a [6,6]-closed product.

Abstract:A series of isomerically pure alkynyl-substituted fullerenol derivatives such as C-60(OH)(6)(O(CH2)(3)CCH)(2) were synthesized through Lewis acid catalyzed epoxy ring opening and/or S(N)1 replacement reactions starting from the fullerene-mixed peroxide C-60(O)(t-BuOO)(4). Copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition readily converted the terminal alkynyl groups into triazole groups. Intramolecular oxidative alkyne coupling afforded a fullerenyl crown ether derivative.
