Abstract:A novel Ag(I)-induced three-component annulation reaction of [60]fullerene with sulfonylhydrazones and nitriles has been developed for the efficient synthesis of diverse disubstituted [60]fullerene-fused dihydropyrroles. The reaction exhibits a broad substrate scope and excellent functional-group tolerance, and also allows for the synthesis of fullerene-bound macromolecules.

Abstract:Photoinduced reactions of tertiary amines with [60]fullerene (C-60) were successfully applied to the synthesis of [60]fulleroalkaloids. This method is easy and effective for constructing C60 derivatives containing natural alkaloids for the purpose of checking the influence of the carbon cage on the biological activities of the alkaloids. In this letter, the preparation and characterization of [60]fulleroscandine is reported.

Abstract:C-60 reacts with L-alanine and substituted iminodiacetic esters to form fulleropyrrolidines. The mechanism for the L-alanine ester reaction involves both C-N bond breaking and formation processes, whereas for the iminodiacetic derivatives there appears simply the loss of two hydrogen atoms. The products are characterized by their spectroscopic data. In addition the 1,3-dipole addition reaction between C-60 and L-alanine and acetaldehyde was used to verify the identity of the product.

Abstract:Aminopolycarboxylic esters react with C-60 under photolysis to produce fullerene multicarboxylates. Irradiation of tetramethyl ethylenediaminetetraacetate (EDTA) with C-60 yields the EDTA-containing fullerene monoadduct C-60(MeOOCCH)(2)NCH2CH2N(CH2COOMe)(2). In addition, several other C-60 monoadducts are also isolated and characterized, including compounds due to EDTA fragmentation. Similar results are observed with pentamethyldimethylenetriaminepentaaceta (DTPA). When partially methylated nitrilotriacetic acid is irradiated with C-60, decarboxylation occurs and organo dihydrofullerene derivatives such as C-60(H)(CH2N(CH2COOMe)(2)) are formed. Radical mechanisms are proposed for both types of photoreactions. The fullerene derivatives are characterized by their spectroscopic data. Photoreactions of C-60 with other analogous molecules also support the conclusions.

Abstract:The photocycloaddition of tertiary amines to [60]fullerene (C-60) is an interesting and useful reaction. We wished to extend the applications of this type of reaction through an investigation of the photoaddition of alkaloids to C-60 for the purpose of synthesizing novel and complex photoadducts that are difficult to obtain by usual methods. Irradiation of tazettine (2) or gramine (3) with Cao in toluene leads to formation of one monoadduct (6 or 7), whereas scandine (1a) or 10-hydroxyscandine (Ib) reacts with C-60 photochemically to give two products, the expected [6,6] monoadduct (5a, 5b) and a new type of monoadduct with a bis-[6, 6] closed structure (4a, 4b). These new structures were characterized by W-vis, FT-IR, H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, H-1-H-1 COSY, ROESY, HMQC (heteronuclear multiple-quantum coherence), and HMBC (heteronuclear multiple-bond connectivity) spectroscopy. The techniques of time-of-flight secondary ion MS (TOF-SIMS) and field desorption MS (FD-MS) were used for the mass determination. He-3 NMR analysis of the product mixture from photoaddition of la to C-60 containing a He-3 atom (He-3@C-60) led to two peaks at -9.091 and -11.090 ppm relative to gaseous He-3, consistent with formation of a [6,6]-closed monoadduct and a bis-[6,6] closed adduct. Presumably, the bis-[6, 6] closed adducts are formed by an intramolecular [2 + 2] cycloaddition of the vinyl group to the adjacent 6,6-ring junction of C-60 after the initial photocycloaddition.

Abstract:The unique reactivity and synthetic applications of oxime acetate derivatives with N, O and S substituents at the α‐position are disclosed for the first time, which leads to 2‐substituted fulleropyrrolidines and mono‐ and disubstituted 1‐fulleropyrrolines via copper‐catalyzed redox‐neutral N‐heteroannulation reactions with C60. This transformation is operationally simple and has a broad substrate scope and good functional group tolerance. Theoretical calculations at the level of B3LYP/6‐31G(d) were performed to elucidate the chemoselectivity of the reaction.

Abstract:Ammonia and aliphatic amines react readily in the oxygen-rich regions of the Cs symmetric fullerene peroxides C60(O)(OOtBu)4 (1) and C60(OH)(Br)(OOtBu)4 (2 c). Michael addition-type hydroamination of the 1,4-diene moiety on the central skew-pentagon was observed when 1 was treated with ammonia or with nonbulky primary amines, while sterically demanding primary amines opened the epoxy moiety to form vicinal aminohydroxy fullerene compounds with the amino group on the central pentagon. In 2 c the bromo group was replaced under similar conditions by ammonia and primary amines. Cyclic secondary amines showed different reaction patterns, forming hydrogenation products or aminoketal-fullerenes when treated with 1 and 2 c, respectively. Single-electron transfer (SET) is the key step in all the proposed mechanisms. The compounds were characterized by their spectroscopic data, and in addition, three single-crystal X-ray structures were obtained.

Abstract:Photolysis of aminopolycarboxylates with C 60 has been shown to be an effective method for the preparation of isomerically pure fullerene derivatives.A series of fullerroaminopolycar boxylate derivatives have been prepared by this method.For example,glycine esters react with C 60 to give C 60 (ROOCCHNHCHCOOR),the mechanism of which is proposed to involve complicated bond breaking and formation processes.Aminoacid esters with secondary and tertiary amino groups can add to C 60 by simply losing two H atoms.Irradiation of tetramethyl ethylenediaminetetraacetate(EDTA) with C 60 yields the EDTA containing fullerene monoadduct C 60 (MeOOCCH) 2NCH 2CH 2N(CH 2COOMe) 2.Compared to well known 1,3 dipole addition method of fulleropyrrolidine preparation,the photoreaction reported here avoids the use of aldehydes or ketones and is specially suited for the preparation of the fullerene containing complexones such as the EDTA C 60 derivative.Langmuir Blodgett film formation and the photoelectric properties of these fulleropyrrolidine ccompounds are investigated.Due to the presence of hydrophilic groups the derivatives form stable and transferable monolayer.By using metal ion sonlution as the subphase,metal complexes of the fullerocarboxylic derivatives are prepared at the air/water interface.Photoelctrical behavior of the LB film fabricated on ITO are studied under various conditions.For most of the compounds electrons flow from the electrolyte through the LB film to the ITO.The quantum yield of the fullerene derivatives can reach 8%.

Abstract:Under microwave irradiation and solvent-free condition, one-pot three-component reaction of C-60, amino acid and aldehyde gave the corresponding [60]fulleropyrrolidine derivatives via dipolar [2 + 3] cycloaddition in moderate to good yields. Compared to the conventional thermal heating method, it provides a convenient and expeditious route to N-unsubstituted fulleropyrrolidines.

Abstract:N-methyl-2-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl) fullerene pyrrolidine was synthesized by the 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction of fullerene(C60) and azomethine ylide(prepared from N-methylglycine and 3,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde).The product was characterized by UV-Vis,FI-IR,1H NMR and MS.The reaction conditions affecting the yield were investigated and the optimum reaction conditions which afforded 66%(based on consumed C60) of the product were: molar ratio of C60∶N-methylglycine∶3,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde 1∶2∶5,reaction temperature 95 ℃,reaction time 28 h.

Fullerenes Nanotubes and Carbon Nanostructures

Abstract:The syntheses and a systematic spectroscopic study of a series of fulleropyrrolidines containing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon are reported. The fulleropyrrolidines were characterized by U-V, IR, H-1-NMR, C-13-NMR and ESI-MS. According to the absorption spectra and the electrochemical data, no significant interaction was observed between the polycyclic aromatic rings and fullerene moiety in the ground state of fulleropyrrolidines. However, the fluorescence and nanosecond transient absorption spectra indicate that these fulleropyrrolidines have sensitized fluorescence of fullerene due to the intramolecular energy transfer, and that their excited triplet state production are considerably reduced, which in turn result in a lower optical limiting performance compared with that of C-60.

Abstract:The reaction of [ 60 ] fullerene with tertiary diallylamines in the presence of manganese (III) acetate dihydrate afforded [ 60 ]fulleropyrrolidine derivatives. The molar ratio of reagents and reaction temperature had somehow effects on the reaction. A possible mechanism of radical cycloaddition onto [ 60 ] fullerene initiated by one-electron oxidation of Mn(III) and diallylamines was proposed. The [ 60 ] fulleropyrrolidine derivatives prepared from the reactions were characterized by means of spectroscopic techniques.

Abstract:Tetrahydro[60]fullerene epoxides C-60(O)Ar-n(NR2)(4-n), n = 1, 2, have been prepared by treating 1,4-adducts C-60(OH)Ph and C-60(Tol)(2) with cyclic secondary amines. The epoxy moieties in these mixed tetrahydro[60]fullerene epoxides were hydrolyzed into the corresponding diol derivatives, which were further oxidized into diketone open-cage fullerenes with a 10-membered orifice. A few other reactions also showed that the present tetrahydro[60]fullerene epoxides with both amino and aryl addends exhibit improved chemical reactivity over the tetraamino[60]fullerene epoxide without any aryl group.

Abstract:The article is devoted to the reactions of [2+3] cycloaddition of pyridine-4-aldehyde to fullerene C60, as well as to the preparation of its water-soluble from of the resulting reaction product N-methyl-2-(pyrid-4-yl)-3,4-fulleropyrrolidine. A literature review of organic compounds containing the pyrrolidine cycle was carried out. It is noted that such compounds have a wide spectrum of biological activity and are part of many drugs of both natural and synthetic origin. In this regard, an interesting “pharmacophore” group is the pyridine cycle, which is part of about 5% of all known drugs. The reaction of pyridin-4-aldehyde with fullerene C60 was carried out in the presence of sarcosine under the conditions of the Prato reaction. The reaction mechanism of 1,2-dipolar cycloaddition, leading to fulleropyrrolidine, is described. The water-soluble complex fulleropyrrolidinas with poly-N-vinylpyrrolidone was obtained. The structures of the synthesized compounds were studied by IR, UV, 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy, as well as by the date of two-dimensional spectra of COSY (1H-1H) and HMQC (1H-13H). The values of chemical shifts, multiplicity and integrated intensity of 1H and 13C NMR signals in one-dimensional NMR spectra were determined. Using spectra in the formats COSY (1H-1H) and HMQC (1H-13C) homo- and heteronuclear interaction were established, confirming the structure of the studied compounds.
