Abstract:A new C60-polyoxometalate compound was synthesized by a C60 derivative with a {SiW11Mn} cluster connecting through a coordination bond and characterized. The photocurrent response test showed great improvement of this new compound compared to C60 and the polyoxometalate precursor, which could be used as a potential photoelectric material.

Abstract:The synthesis of new C60 fullerene derivatives functionalized with thiophene moieties as well as with electron donating or electron withdrawing groups, bromine (Br) or cyano (CN), respectively, using Bingel reactions is reported. The synthesized derivatives were used as the electron transporting materials (ETMs) in inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Compared to devices fabricated with [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PC61BM), the new derivatives showed similar electrochemical properties and electron mobilities. However, PSCs based on the new derivatives synthesized in this work exhibited higher power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) than PC61BM based devices, which were ascribed to their better passivation ability, likely due to specific interactions between the fullerene addend and the perovskite layer surface. Devices based on the fullerene bearing the CN group exhibited an additionally improved efficiency due to the increased dielectric constant (ε r) of this derivative. These results show that the new functionalized fullerene derivatives can act as efficient ETMs in inverted PSCs.

Abstract:The syntheses and a systematic spectroscopic study of a series of fulleropyrrolidines containing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon are reported. The fulleropyrrolidines were characterized by U-V, IR, H-1-NMR, C-13-NMR and ESI-MS. According to the absorption spectra and the electrochemical data, no significant interaction was observed between the polycyclic aromatic rings and fullerene moiety in the ground state of fulleropyrrolidines. However, the fluorescence and nanosecond transient absorption spectra indicate that these fulleropyrrolidines have sensitized fluorescence of fullerene due to the intramolecular energy transfer, and that their excited triplet state production are considerably reduced, which in turn result in a lower optical limiting performance compared with that of C-60.

Abstract:A soluble fullerene, TAZC60, bearing an electron transport moiety (triazole) is synthesized and characterized. TAZC60 possesses a band gap of 2.2 eV, and HOMO and LUMO energy levels of 5.9 and 3.7 eV, respectively. Thin films of TAZC60 exhibit an electron mobility of 2.2 x 10(-8) m(2)/V s, as determined from the current-voltage characteristics that fit with a space-charge limited current (SCLC). These properties are similar to those of [6,6]-phenyl C61 butyric acid methyl ester, PCBM, a soluble fullerene widely used in organic photovoltaics. The strategy of modifying fullerenes with a solublizing electron transport moiety may open avenues for the design of more specific polymers for controlling the morphology and transport properties of polymer-fullerene blends for polymer solar cells.

Abstract:Due to the partially reduced π-conjugation of the fullerene cage, multi-functionalized fullerene derivatives exhibit remarkable fluorescent properties compared to pristine fullerenes, which have high potential for application in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). In this study two multi-functionalized C70 derivatives, C70(OCH3)10[C(COOEt)2] and C70(OCH3)10[C(COOEt)2]2, with excellent fluorescence properties, were designed and synthesized. Compared with C70(OCH3)10 containing a single kind of functional group, both the C70(OCH3)10[C(COOEt)2] and C70(OCH3)10[C(COOEt)2]2 exhibited enhanced fluorescence properties with blue fluorescence emission. The fluorescence quantum yields of the C70(OCH3)10[C(COOEt)2] and C70(OCH3)10[C(COOEt)2]2 were 1.94% and 2.30%, respectively, which were about ten times higher than that of C70(OCH3)10. The theoretical calculations revealed that the multi-functionalization of the C70 increased the S1–T1 energy gap, reducing the intersystem crossing efficiency, resulting in the higher fluorescence quantum yield of the C70 derivatives. The results indicate that multi-functionalization is a viable strategy to improve the fluorescence of fullerene derivatives.

Fluorination on electron-deficient units of benzothiadiazole-based donor-acceptor conjugated polymers for novel fullerene-based organic solar cells

Abstract:Three new donor-acceptor (D-A) conjugated polymers based on benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b′]dithiophene (BDT) and benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole (BT), namely, PB-BT, PB-BTf and PB-BTPf, were synthesized with different substituents (Hydrogen atoms, Fluorine atoms and fluorophenyl groups) on BT unit. Experimental results and theoretical calculations indicate that molecularly tuning of side chains on BT moeity simultaneously influences the energy levels and intermolecular packing of the resulted polymers by modulating their electron affinity and molecular coplanarity. The polymer solar cells (PSCs) based on a blend of PB-BTf/[6,6]-phenyl-C71-butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM) exhibits the best photovoltaic performance among the three copolymers, with a open-circuit voltage (Voc) of 0.79 V and a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 8.43%. Furthermore, polymer PB-BTPf containing fluorophenyl groups shows a higher Voc of 0.99 V due to its more low-lying highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) compared with other two structural polymeric analogues. The results here provide further fundamental insights into the relationship between the fluorination on electron-withdrawing moiety and the photovoltaic performance for the conjugated polymers applied in fullerene organic solar cells.

Abstract:An amine-based, alcohol-soluble fullerene [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid 2-((2-(dimethylamino)ethyl)(methyl)amino)-ethyl ester (PCBDAN) with 4-fold electron mobility of 6,6-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) is applied successfully as an acceptor and cathode interfacial material in polymer solar cells ITO/P3HT:PCBDAN/MoO3/Ag, where indium tin oxide (ITO) alone is used as the cathode and poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) is used as a donor. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) depth profile confirming a favorable vertical phase separation is formed where P3HT is rich at the air/active blend interface and PCBDAN is rich at the buried interface with ITO and, thus, reduces the work function of ITO for use as the cathode. A moderate power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 3.1% is achieved. The slightly low PCE could be due to unoptimized morphology and low structure ordering of P3HT in the blends. However, this result demonstrates that the amine-based fullerene could be used as the acceptor and cathode interfacial material, which eliminated the multilayer device fabrication process. Because PCBDAN has high electron mobility, it would have potential applications in nano-structured organic solar cells. In the near future, alcohol-processable, high-efficient organic/polymer solar cells can be anticipated.

Abstract:Fullerenation of polycarbonate (PC) is achieved by direct reaction of C-60 with PC using AlCl3 as catalyst. Stirring a 1, 1, 2, 2-tetrachloroethane solution of C-60 and PC in the presence of AlCl3 under nitrogen at 140 degrees C for 24 h attached C-60 to the PC chains, yielding fullerenated PCs (C-60-PCs) with a C-60 content up to 2.16 wt %. The C-60-PCs are soluble in tetrahydrofuran (THF) and chloroform, and IR, UV, and NMR analyses suggest that they possess the molecular structure HxC60(PC)(x) with x < 1 on the average. The C-60-PCs limit strong 532-nm optical pulses more effectively than the parent C-60. Light transmission spectra of the C-60-PC solutions red-shift with increasing concentration, with their cutoff wavelengths predictably tunable by simply changing their concentrations.

Abstract:The utilization of non-fullerene acceptors has greatly promoted the development of organic photovoltaics in past few years. Herein, two new non-fullerene small-molecule electron acceptors, CRIC and CRIC-4F, with a four-fused-rings containing chrysene core, are designed and synthesized. Benefiting from the rigid and planar chrysene segment, these two acceptors exhibit strong intramolecular π electron transition with intense optical absorption from 550 to 750 nm. Both molecules present deep lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy levels at around −4.0 eV, thereby making them suitable to employ as electron acceptors. In combination with electron donor J52-2F, organic solar cells based on CRIC achieved a decent power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 6.12% with a low energy loss of 0.59 eV owning to their complementary absorption, higher energy levels, and reduced charge recombination, thus surpassing the J52-2F:CRIC-4F based counterpart (PCE = 5.61%). This work demonstrates that chrysene derivatives are potential acceptors for applications in organic photovoltaics with low energy losses.

Abstract:A series of well-defined D–π-B–A C60 adducts containing three chromophores and their corresponding precursors were facilely developed as organic photovoltaic materials. The photophysical and electrochemical properties indicated that effective photo-induced intramolecular and/or intermolecular energy transfer and charge transfer were formed from the donor chromophores to the C60 moiety in thin films. Solution processed molecular heterojunction solar cells using 12 as active layer were fabricated with 2.0% monochromatic efficiency. Our results showed that further exploration might lead the way toward high-efficient solution-processed single molecular solar cell materials based on conjugated oligomer covalent to fullerene units.

Abstract:The push-pull functionalized fullerenes consisting of multi-N,N-diethylamine donors covalently attached to N-methylpyrrolidine derivative of C60 have been designed and investigated. The structures and first hyperpolarizabilities of these fullerene derivatives were calculated using density functional theory. Furthermore, absorption spectra of the complexes along with electron density difference maps corresponding to the most intense electronic transitions were achieved by time-dependent density functional theory. It suggests that with the growing numbers of N,N-Dimethylanilin acting as electron-donating group, the polarizabilities, dipole moments and the first hyperpolarizabilits increase, however, transition energies of the crucial electronic transitions decrease and the absorption wavelength shows bathochromic effect. The excitation transitions have significant charge transfer character and, as a consequence, the novel complexes can behave as second-order nonlinear optical chromophores, in which the N,N-Dimethylanilin act as donors towards fullerenes.

Abstract:A novel isotropic fullerene-hybridized fused-ring electron acceptor, designated C60-Y, has been synthesized via a mild [4+2] Diels-Alder cycloaddition reaction with fullerene C60 to enhance the performance of organic solar cells (OSCs). Comparative analysis shows that C60-Y significantly outperforms the control acceptor Me-Y, with a notable increase in the relative dielectric constant from 2.79 to 3.95. This improvement enhances exciton dissociation and reduces non-radiative energy losses. Additionally, the isotropic molecular packing of C60-Y, similar to fullerene, facilitates efficient interface formation with donor polymers and improves charge mobility. As a result, incorporating C60-Y as an electron acceptor increases the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of binary OSCs to 15.02%, surpassing the 13.31% achieved with Me-Y. Moreover, when integrated into a ternary blend system, an impressive PCE of 19.22% is achieved, top-performing among reported ternary OSCs utilizing fullerene derivatives as the third component. These results suggest that fullerene-hybridized acceptors like C60-Y hold great potential for advancing high-efficiency OSCs by enhancing exciton dissociation, reducing energy losses, and improving charge mobility.

Abstract:[6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester remains indispensable as the electron transport material (ETM) for perovskite solar cells (PSCs), but its synthesis involves complicated multisteps with low productivity. In contrast, the potential of synthesizing simpler fulleropyrrolidine derivatives has long been overlooked, and little has been understood regarding their structure-dependent effects on photovoltaic (PV) performance. Herein, seven novel fulleropyrrolidine derivatives (F1–F7) are deliberately designed, synthesized, and comprehensively characterized in both solution and thin-film states and subsequently investigated as ETMs for PSCs. Notably, the F4 delivers the highest power conversion efficiencies over 20% of devices, which surpass all reported fulleropyrrolidine ETMs due to its optimal photoelectric property. Moreover, the structure-dependent effects of the fullerenes on PV parameters are uncovered, including solubility, intermolecular interaction, packing structure, and charge-transfer ability, which can guide the future design of high-performance and stable fullerene ETMs for PSCs.

The Impact of the Presence of Aromatic Rings in the Substituent on the Performance of C60/C70 Fullerene-Based Acceptor Materials in Photovoltaic Cells

Abstract:Abstract In this work, a series of C 60 /C 70 fullerene derivatives bearing non-aromatic and mono-, bi-, tri- and tetracyclic aryl-substituents was synthesized according to the modified Bingel method and characterized using spectral methods: ESI-MS, 1 H NMR, 13 C NMR, UV–Vis, FT-IR and cyclic voltammetry (CV). HOMO and LUMO energy levels and the band gaps for optimized structures of reported fullerene derivatives were determined according to the DFT functionals, B3LYP 6-31G(d) and PBE/6-311G(d,p). Results obtained from CV and UV–Vis measurements, which showed very good agreement, were compared to calculated theoretical values also revealing satisfactory level of compliance of the obtained results. We have studied the impact of presence and number of aromatic rings in malonate substituent of C 60 /C 70 fullerene derivatives employed as acceptor materials on performance of BHJ solar cells prepared using PTB7-Th as donor material. We successfully prepared solar cells based on all the synthesized compounds, and the highest performance of the obtained photovoltaic devices was observed for fullerene derivatives bearing monocyclic and bicyclic aromatic moieties. The obtained voltage was about 0.8 V and current density was above 10 mA/cm 2 . Optical studies showed absorption edges at 1.9 eV and 1.8 eV for C 60 and C 70 derivatives, respectively, with absorption coefficients comparable to C 60 /C 70 PCBM samples. Photocurrent spectroscopy showed 20–40% quantum efficiency. Long-term ageing measurements showed T80 time between 105 days and 115 days for derivatives with phenyl and naphthalene substituents. Taking into account that synthesis of reported fullerene derivatives is very convenient, the reported compounds are very promising materials for construction of BHJ solar cells.

Preparation and Characterization of Fullerene C 60 and Phthalocyanine Co-grafted Poly（epoxy Propyl Carbazole）

Abstract:The fullerene C-60 and phthatocyanine co-grafted poly (epoxy propyl carbazole) (C-60-CuPC-PEPC) was synthesized by Friedel-Crafts reaction. It was found that C-60-CuPc-PEPC had good UV-Vis absorption property, whose active spectral range was expanded from UV to visible spectrum region, and exhibited better photoconductivity than CuPc-PEPC and PEPC. These improvements could be attributed to the interaction between C-60, phthalocyanine and PEPC.

Abstract:Conjugated polyacetylenes having pendant fullerene and/or porphyrin groups were prepared by copolymerization in the presence of [Rh(nbd)Cl]2−NEt3 in CHCl3. The photochemical and electrochemical properties of the polymers were studied by UV−vis spectroscopy and voltammetry. The photoinduced charge-transfer properties of the monolayer films were also measured by a three-electrode cell technique. More importantly, poly(1a0.2-co-50.8) shows a high capacity to form a photoinduced charge-separated state and to produce steady and prompt photocurrent at the irradiation of 21.2 mW cm-2 white light.
