Abstract:Unusual products were isolated from reactions of [60]fullerene with cyclopentenyl or cyclohexenyl pyrrolidine and piperidine. The structures of products were characterized by spectroscopic means. A possible thermoinduced electron-transfer mechanism for the new reaction was proposed.

Abstract:[60]Fullerene reacts with imines prepared from substituted benzaldehydes and a - amino acid ester to give isomers of fullerene - fused proline derivatives via 1,3- dipolar cycloaddition. The products were characterized by FT- IR,UV- vis, 1H NMR,13C NMR and TOF- SIMS spectroscopic techniques. The bioactivities of the products were also tested.

Abstract:The first umpolung strategy for the cycloacylation of fullerene using a N-heterocyclic carbene organocatalyst is reported. The coupling of [60]fullerene with different structural α,β-unsaturated aldehydes efficiently furnishes interesting [60]fullerene-fused cyclopentan-1-ones or cyclohex-2-en-1-ones in good to excellent yields. This new reaction displays a wide substrate scope and excellent functional-group tolerance, and diverse substituents such as aryl, heteroaryl, alkenyl, alkyl, and ester can be installed by using the corresponding enals.

Abstract:The thermal reaction of [60] fullerene (C-60) with the carbonyl ylides generated in situ from trans-epoxides to give C-60-fused tetrahydrofuran derivatives has been investigated. The reaction of C-60 with trans-2-benzoyl-3-aryloxiranes afforded only cis-products, while the reaction of C-60 with 2-cyano-2-ethoxycarbonyl-3-aryloxiranes gave exclusively or predominantly cis isomers. The isomeric distributions of the latter reactions were drastically affected by the substituent on the phenyl ring.

Abstract:A novel and efficient Cu(I)/Ag(I)-mediated synergistic annulation reaction of [60]fullerene with diary-lethanones, benzoylacetonitriles, and beta-dicarbonyl compounds has been developed for the direct construction of diverse disubstituted dihydrofuran-fused [60]fullerene derivatives. This transformation exhibits a remarkably broad substrate scope and functional group tolerance and provides a useful method to a scarce class of fullerene derivatives.

Abstract:Unlike the facile addition of aliphatic amines to fullerenes, heteroaromatic compounds with NH group do not react directly with pristine fullerenes. The present work reports the preparation of several cyclopentadienyl type [60]fullerene derivatives with pyrazole and pyrrole addends through replacement reactions of C60Cl6 in the presence of tetrabutylammonium bromide. The method has also been applied for the synthesis of aniline and methoxyamine [60]fullerene cyclopentadienyl type adducts. Radical species were involved in the reaction mechanism.

Abstract:N-methyl-2-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl) fullerene pyrrolidine was synthesized by the 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction of fullerene(C60) and azomethine ylide(prepared from N-methylglycine and 3,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde).The product was characterized by UV-Vis,FI-IR,1H NMR and MS.The reaction conditions affecting the yield were investigated and the optimum reaction conditions which afforded 66%(based on consumed C60) of the product were: molar ratio of C60∶N-methylglycine∶3,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde 1∶2∶5,reaction temperature 95 ℃,reaction time 28 h.

Abstract:Aminopolycarboxylic esters react with C-60 under photolysis to produce fullerene multicarboxylates. Irradiation of tetramethyl ethylenediaminetetraacetate (EDTA) with C-60 yields the EDTA-containing fullerene monoadduct C-60(MeOOCCH)(2)NCH2CH2N(CH2COOMe)(2). In addition, several other C-60 monoadducts are also isolated and characterized, including compounds due to EDTA fragmentation. Similar results are observed with pentamethyldimethylenetriaminepentaaceta (DTPA). When partially methylated nitrilotriacetic acid is irradiated with C-60, decarboxylation occurs and organo dihydrofullerene derivatives such as C-60(H)(CH2N(CH2COOMe)(2)) are formed. Radical mechanisms are proposed for both types of photoreactions. The fullerene derivatives are characterized by their spectroscopic data. Photoreactions of C-60 with other analogous molecules also support the conclusions.

Abstract:The unique reactivity and synthetic applications of oxime acetate derivatives with N, O and S substituents at the α‐position are disclosed for the first time, which leads to 2‐substituted fulleropyrrolidines and mono‐ and disubstituted 1‐fulleropyrrolines via copper‐catalyzed redox‐neutral N‐heteroannulation reactions with C60. This transformation is operationally simple and has a broad substrate scope and good functional group tolerance. Theoretical calculations at the level of B3LYP/6‐31G(d) were performed to elucidate the chemoselectivity of the reaction.

Abstract:1-(4-Methoxyphenyl)-1-(trimethylsilyloxy)ethylene was reacted with [60]fullerene in air atmosphere and nonpolar solvent (toluene) to form an unpredicted product of cyclopropane [60] fullerene derivative (5). In the presence of polar aprotic solvent, tetrahydrofuran, and under non- oxygen condition, the normal nucleophilic addition product 1,2-substituted [60] fullerene (3) was obtained. A reasonable mechanism has been suggested.

Abstract:The first intramolecular (4+3) cycloaddition of pyrroles with epoxy enolsilanes as the electrophiles was developed and used to generate optically-enriched cycloadducts containing the nortropane substructure in good yields. Using this pyrrole cycloaddition as the key step, we achieved the asymmetric synthesis of a nortropane compound bearing the BCDEF ring structure common to the ClassII galbulimima alkaloids.

Abstract:Herein an unprecedented iron(II)-catalyzed redox-neutral radical cascade reaction of [60]fullerene with γ,δ-unsaturated oxime esters is reported for the preparation of novel free (N–H) pyrrolidino[2′,3′:1,2]fullerenes. Abstract:[reaction: see text] tert-Butylperoxy radicals add to [70]fullerene to form a mixture of adducts C(70)(OO(t)()Bu)(n)() (n = 2, 4, 6, 8, 10). Four isomers were isolated for the bis-adduct with the two tert-butylperoxo groups attached at 1,2-, 5,6-, 7,23-, and 2,5-positions, respectively. Two isomers were isolated for the tetrakis-adduct with the tert-butylperoxo groups located along the equator in C(s)() symmetry and on the side in C(1) symmetry, respectively. Similarly, two isomers were isolated for the hexakis-adducts with a structure related to the tetrakis-adducts, one of which has the cyclopentadienyl substructure. No isomer was detected for the octakis- and decakis-adducts. The C(s)()-symmetric octakis- and C(2)-symmetric decakis-adducts have all the tert-butylperoxo groups located along the equator. The decakis-adduct is the major product under optimized conditions. The compounds were characterized by their spectroscopic data. Chemical correlation through further addition of tert-butylperoxy radicals to isolated pure derivatives confirmed the structure assignment. Mechanisms of the tert-butylperoxy radical addition to C(70) follow two pathways: equatorial addition along the belt and cyclopentadienyl addition on the side.

Abstract:A series of isomerically pure alkynyl-substituted fullerenol derivatives such as C-60(OH)(6)(O(CH2)(3)CCH)(2) were synthesized through Lewis acid catalyzed epoxy ring opening and/or S(N)1 replacement reactions starting from the fullerene-mixed peroxide C-60(O)(t-BuOO)(4). Copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition readily converted the terminal alkynyl groups into triazole groups. Intramolecular oxidative alkyne coupling afforded a fullerenyl crown ether derivative.

Abstract:The unique structural and electronic properties of endohedral metallofullerenes (EMFs) make them candidates for applications in nanoscience and biomedicine, and the functionalization of EMFs has attracted increasing attention. Various types of transformations, such as Diels–Alder reactions, 1,3dipolar cycloadditions, photochemical silylation, alkylation and carbene additions, Bingel reactions, and free-radical reactions have been reported to take place on the outer surface of EMFs. Icosahedral (Ih) Sc3N@C80, the most abundant EMF, can undergo most, but not all, of the abovementioned reactions. For example, the Bingel reaction of IhY3N@C80 [3a,c] and Ih-Gd3N@C80 [3b] has been reported to yield methanofullerene derivatives, but the same attempted cyclopropanation reaction with Ih-Sc3N@C80 was not successful. Abstract:The chemical reactivity of the tetragon-incorporating C-2v-symmetric C-62 fullerene has been investigated for the first time. The cycloadditions of diazoadamantane (AdN(2)) and adamantylidene carbene (Ad:) to C-62 and the isomerizations of the cycloadducts were studied by a density functional theory survey. The calculation results show that the 1,3-dipolar reaction of AdN(2) occurs in the [4,6] junction to generate a heteropentagonal pyrazoline in the squared region, and the subsequent dinitrogen elimination was found to be a stereoselective concerted mechanism leading to an exclusive [6,6]-bridged C(62)Ad structure. The thermal and photochemical rearrangements of the formed [6,6]-C(62)Ad are discussed, and the results imply that the [4,6]-fulleroids are the major rearrangement products according to both kinetic and thermodynamic considerations. In the case of [2 + 1] cycloadditions to C-62, an individual open [4,6]-bridged adamantanofullerene was predicted as the major adduct of singlet Ad: carbene by a direct concerted mechanism. On the other hand, a mixture of three interconvertible regioisomers was found to be the main products of triplet carbene addition through a stepwise radical reaction pathway.
