Abstract:The normwise condition number and two kinds of backward errors are considered when nonsymmetric algebraic Riccati equation (NARE) has the minimal nonnegative solution. Based on the techniques for the symmetric case, we apply the condition number theory developed by Rice to define condition number for NARE. The explicit expression is derived in a uniform manner. Meanwhile, two kinds of backward errors are defined and evaluated by the explicit formulas. Numerical experiments are listed to illustrate and compare the practical performance.

Abstract:We consider the nonsymmetric algebraic Riccati equation (NARE) which arises in transport theory and Markov chain model. It is known that some assumptions on the coefficient matrices guarantee the existence of minimal nonnegative solution. In this paper, we apply the theory of condition number by Rice in 1966 to define condition numbers of the NARE, and derive explicit expressions of the condition numbers in an unified manner. If M has no zero entries, we prove that the structured and unstructured condition numbers for the minimal nonnegative solution are the same. As for a special NARE arising in transport theory, structured condition number is derived. An upper bound and the approximate bounds for the structured backward error are also obtained. These results are illustrated by some numerical examples.

Abstract:In this paper, some sharp perturbation bounds for the Hermitian positive semi-definite solution to an algebraic Riccati equation are developed. A further analysis for these bounds is done. This analysis shows that there is, presumably, some intrinsic relation between the sensitivity of the solution to the algebraic Riccati equation and the distance of the spectrum of the closed-loop matrix from the imaginary axis.

Abstract:Classical condition numbers are normwise: they measure the size of both input perturbations and output errors using some norms. To take into account the relative of each data component, and, in particular, a possible data sparseness, componentwise condition numbers have been increasingly considered. These are mostly of two kinds: mixed and componentwise. In this paper, we give explicit expressions, computable from the data, for the mixed and componentwise condition numbers for the computation of the Moore-Penrose inverse as well as for the computation of solutions and residues of linear least squares problems. In both cases the data matrices have full column ( row) rank.

Numerical Linear Algebra with Applications

Abstract:We present a componentwise perturbation analysis for the continuous-time Sylvester equations. Componentwise, mixed condition numbers and new perturbation bounds are derived for the matrix equations. The small sample statistical method can also be applied for the condition estimation. These condition numbers and perturbation bounds are tested on numerical examples and compared with the normwise condition number. Abstract:Inspired by the study of complex nonsymmetric algebraic Riccati equations, we investigate nonsymmetric algebraic Riccati equations for quaternionic matrices. We introduce the comparison matrix of a quaternionic matrix, extending that of a complex matrix, and use it to give a condition for the existence and uniqueness of the extremal solution. Abstract:The nonsymmetric algebraic Riccati equation is proposed by using the tensor product. The existence of its minimal nonnegative solution is studied. The sufficient condition of the existence and the uniqueness of the minimal nonnegative solution is given by M-tensor as well. The solution can be obtained by the fast Fourier transform which save computational cost of computing the required solution. Some numerical experiments are performed.

Abstract:In this paper, we provide the following simple equivalent condition for a nonsymmetric Algebraic Riccati Equation to admit a stabilizing cone-preserving solution: an associated coefficient matrix must be stable. The result holds under the assumption that said matrix be cross-positive on a proper cone, and it both extends and completes a corresponding sufficient condition for nonnegative matrices in the literature. Further, key to showing the above is the following result which we also provide: in order for a monotonically increasing sequence of cone-preserving matrices to converge, it is sufficient to be bounded above in a single vectorial direction.

Abstract:The coupled algebraic Riccati equations have wide range of applications in the fields such as control theory and etc. In this paper we consider numerical solution of nonsymmetric coupled algebraic Riccati equations. A class of alternating direction iteration method is proposed to solve the equation, and convergence analysis of this method is given. Theoretical analysis and numerical experiments have shown that the ADI method proposed in this paper is feasible and is more effective compared to several existing methods under certain conditions.
