Abstract:Classical condition numbers are normwise: they measure the size of both input perturbations and output errors using some norms. To take into account the relative of each data component, and, in particular, a possible data sparseness, componentwise condition numbers have been increasingly considered. These are mostly of two kinds: mixed and componentwise. In this paper, we give explicit expressions, computable from the data, for the mixed and componentwise condition numbers for the computation of the Moore-Penrose inverse as well as for the computation of solutions and residues of linear least squares problems. In both cases the data matrices have full column ( row) rank.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the normwise, mixed, and componentwise condition numbers and their upper bounds for the MoorePenrose inverse of the Kronecker product and more general matrix function compositions involving Kronecker products. We also present the condition numbers and their upper bounds for the associated Kronecker product linear least squares solution with full column rank. In practice, the derived upper bounds for the mixed and componentwise condition numbers for Kronecker product linear least squares solution can be efficiently estimated using the HagerHigham Algorithm. Abstract:It is well known that the normwise relative condition numbers measure the sensitivity of matrix inversion and the solution of nonsingular linear systems. Here, we consider the condition number formulas for the weighted Moore–Penrose inverse of a rectangular matrix and give explicit expressions for the weighted condition numbers of the singular linear systems Ax=b. These explicit expressions extend the earlier work of several authors. As we know, the computed weighted least squares solution x of minx∥Ax−b∥M, in the presence of the round-off error, satisfies the perturbed equation miny∥(A+E)y−(b+f)∥M. Finally, an upper bound of ∥y−x∥N is derived for the case where the weighted matrix and vector norms and the assumption rank(A+E)=rank(A) are used.

Abstract:Perturbation theory plays a crucial role in sensitivity analysis, which is extensively used to assess the robustness of numerical techniques. To quantify the relative sensitivity of any problem, it becomes essential to investigate structured condition numbers (CNs) via componentwise perturbation theory. This paper addresses and analyzes structured mixed condition number (MCN) and componentwise condition number (CCN) for the Moore-Penrose (M-P) inverse and the minimum norm least squares (MNLS) solution involving rank-structured matrices, which include the Cauchy-Vandermonde (CV) matrices and {1, 1}-quasiseparable (QS) matrices. A general framework has been developed to compute the upper bounds for MCN and CCN of rank deficient parameterized matrices. This framework leads to faster computation of upper bounds of structured CNs for CV and {1, 1}-QS matrices. Furthermore, comparisons of obtained upper bounds are investigated theoretically and experimentally. In addition, the structured effective CNs for the M-P inverse and the MNLS solution of {1, 1}-QS matrices are presented. Numerical tests reveal the reliability of the proposed upper bounds as well as demonstrate that the structured effective CNs are computationally less expensive and can be substantially smaller compared to the unstructured CNs.

Abstract:A matrix over ring with identity has the consecutive-column (CC) property if for all k, all its relevant submatrices having k consecutive rows and the first k columns are invertible. Similarly, the consecutive-row (CR) is defined. In this paper, we show that a arbitrary m x n matrix has both CC and CR properties if and only if it admits a certain factorization with bidiagonal-type factors (with invertible entries). This factorization is unique. We also show that there is a mutual 1 - 1 relations between the matrices having CC and CR properties and this certain factorization with bidiagonal-type factors (with invertible entries). This bidiagonal factorization has important applications in computer aided geometry design, electrical network and many other fields.

Abstract:The explicit expressions of normwise, mixed and componentwise condition numbers for the K-weighted pseudoinverse are first presented. With the intermediate result, i.e. the derivative of , we can recover the explicit expressions of condition numbers for solution of least squares problem with equality constraint. Then, we investigate the statistical estimation of condition numbers of using the probabilistic spectral norm estimator and the small-sample statistical condition estimation method, and devise three algorithms. Finally, numerical examples are provided to illustrate these results.

Abstract:The condition number of a linear function of the indefinite least squares solution is called the partial condition number for the indefinite least squares problem. In this paper, based on a new and very general condition number which can be called the unified condition number, the expression of the partial unified condition number is first presented when the data space is measured by the general weighted product norm. Then, by setting the specific norms and weight parameters, we obtain the expressions of the partial normwise, mixed and componentwise condition numbers. Moreover, the corresponding structured partial condition numbers are also taken into consideration when the problem is structured, whose expressions are given. Considering the connections between the indefinite and total least squares problems, we derive the (structured) partial condition numbers for the latter, which generalize the ones in the literature. To estimate these condition numbers effectively and reliably, the probabilistic spectral norm estimator and the small-sample statistical condition estimation method are applied and three related algorithms are devised. Finally, the obtained results are illustrated by numerical experiments.
