Abstract:The explicit expressions of mixed and componentwise condition numbers for the spectral projections, generalized spectral projections and sign functions for matrices and regular matrix pairs are derived. The condition numbers improve some known results of the normwise type and reveal the structured perturbations. Statistical condition estimation is applied to these problems which can be calculated efficiently.

Abstract:A necessary and sufficient condition was presented for the quadratic stability of interval matrices and a related calculation method of stability margin. The results were obtained in terms of LMIs. With the powerful LMI toolbox, it was very convenient to solve this problem. Examples showed that this method is effective in determining the robust stability and related stability margin of interval matrices.

Abstract:Classical condition numbers are normwise: they measure the size of both input perturbations and output errors using some norms. To take into account the relative of each data component, and, in particular, a possible data sparseness, componentwise condition numbers have been increasingly considered. These are mostly of two kinds: mixed and componentwise. In this paper, we give explicit expressions, computable from the data, for the mixed and componentwise condition numbers for the computation of the Moore-Penrose inverse as well as for the computation of solutions and residues of linear least squares problems. In both cases the data matrices have full column ( row) rank.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Matrix Analysis and Applications, Volume 45, Issue 4, Page 2155-2183, December 2024. In this note we consider common matrix factorizations such as LU decomposition of a square and rectangular matrix, Cholesky and QR decomposition, singular value decomposition for square and rectangular matrices, and eigen-, Schur, and Takagi decomposition. We first note that well-conditioned factors tend to be sensitive to perturbations of the input matrix, while ill-conditioned factors tend to be insensitive. It seems that this behavior has not been recognized in numerical analysis. We develop a formula for the relation between the condition number of the factor and its sensitivity with respect to input perturbations, and give reasons for that. Our main focus is to describe verification methods for the factors of the mentioned decompositions. That means proving existence of the factorization together with rigorous entrywise error bounds for the factors. Our goal is to develop algorithms requiring [math] operations for an [math] matrix with [math] and [math]. Moreover, bounds of high quality are aimed for, often not far from maximal accuracy. A main tool to achieve that is accurate dot products based on error-free transformations. Since preconditioning based on approximate inverses is used, our methods are restricted to full matrices.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the normwise, mixed, and componentwise condition numbers and their upper bounds for the MoorePenrose inverse of the Kronecker product and more general matrix function compositions involving Kronecker products. We also present the condition numbers and their upper bounds for the associated Kronecker product linear least squares solution with full column rank. In practice, the derived upper bounds for the mixed and componentwise condition numbers for Kronecker product linear least squares solution can be efficiently estimated using the HagerHigham Algorithm. Abstract:Well-conditioned matrices are often required in science and engineering, such as signal processing and finance. Problem to find the nearest positive definite matrix by explicitly imposing a constraint on the condition number are considered in this paper. A new algorithm based on geometric perspective is proposed for getting the required well-conditioned matrix. Based on these, a condition number-constrained matrix minimization problem is further considered, where the constraints are imposed for avoiding degenerate solutions in which parameter matrices become rank deficient. An inexact version of alternating direction method with truly implementable inexactness criteria is proposed for solving this problem. Numerical experiments, including comparison with some existing methods, are performed to illustrate the efficiency of the proposed algorithms.

Abstract:The condition number of a linear function of the indefinite least squares solution is called the partial condition number for the indefinite least squares problem. In this paper, based on a new and very general condition number which can be called the unified condition number, the expression of the partial unified condition number is first presented when the data space is measured by the general weighted product norm. Then, by setting the specific norms and weight parameters, we obtain the expressions of the partial normwise, mixed and componentwise condition numbers. Moreover, the corresponding structured partial condition numbers are also taken into consideration when the problem is structured, whose expressions are given. Considering the connections between the indefinite and total least squares problems, we derive the (structured) partial condition numbers for the latter, which generalize the ones in the literature. To estimate these condition numbers effectively and reliably, the probabilistic spectral norm estimator and the small-sample statistical condition estimation method are applied and three related algorithms are devised. Finally, the obtained results are illustrated by numerical experiments.

Abstract:Combining the modified matrix-vector equation approach with the technique of Lyapunov majorant function and the Banach fixed point principle, we obtain new rigorous perturbation bounds for the LU and QR factorizations with normwise or componentwise perturbations in the given matrix, where the componentwise perturbations have the form of backward errors resulting from the standard factorization algorithms. Each of the new rigorous perturbation bounds is a rigorous version of the first-order perturbation bound derived by the matrix-vector equation approach in the literature, and we present their explicit expressions. These bounds improve the results given by Chang and Stehle [SIAM Journal on Matrix Analysis and Applications 2010; 31:2841--2859]. Moreover, we derive new tighter first-order perturbation bounds including two optimal ones for the LU factorization, and provide the explicit expressions of the optimal first-order perturbation bounds for the LU and QR factorizations.

Abstract:We present a componentwise perturbation analysis for the continuous-time Sylvester equations. Componentwise, mixed condition numbers and new perturbation bounds are derived for the matrix equations. The small sample statistical method can also be applied for the condition estimation. These condition numbers and perturbation bounds are tested on numerical examples and compared with the normwise condition number. Abstract:Due to the increasing applications of dual quaternion and their matrices in recent years, as well as the significance of LU decomposition as a matrix decomposition technique, in this paper, we propose dual quaternion Gaussian transformation and obtain dual quaternion LU decomposition by using Gaussian transformation. We also use the total order of dual numbers to obtain the partial pivoting dual quaternion LU decomposition. Based on the real structure-preserving algorithm of quaternion matrix, we propose the real structure-preserving algorithms of LU decomposition and partial pivoting LU decomposition for dual quaternion matrix. Numerical experiments have verified the effectiveness of the new real structure-preserving approaches.

Abstract:The explicit expressions of normwise, mixed and componentwise condition numbers for the K-weighted pseudoinverse are first presented. With the intermediate result, i.e. the derivative of , we can recover the explicit expressions of condition numbers for solution of least squares problem with equality constraint. Then, we investigate the statistical estimation of condition numbers of using the probabilistic spectral norm estimator and the small-sample statistical condition estimation method, and devise three algorithms. Finally, numerical examples are provided to illustrate these results.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Matrix Analysis and Applications, Volume 45, Issue 2, Page 954-966, June 2024. The area of matrix functions has received growing interest for a long period of time due to their growing applications. Having a numerical algorithm for a matrix function, the ideal situation is to have an estimate or bound for the error returned alongside the solution. Condition numbers serve this purpose; they measure the first-order sensitivity of matrix functions to perturbations in the input data. We have observed that the existing unstructured condition number leads most of the time to inferior bounds of relative forward errors for some matrix functions at triangular and quasi-triangular matrices. We propose a condition number of matrix functions exploiting the structure of triangular and quasi-triangular matrices. We then adapt an existing algorithm for exact computation of the unstructured condition number to an algorithm for exact evaluation of the structured condition number. Although these algorithms are direct rather than iterative and useful for testing the numerical stability of numerical algorithms, they are less practical for relatively large problems. Therefore, we use an implicit power method approach to estimate the structured condition number. Our numerical experiments show that the structured condition number captures the behavior of the numerical algorithms and provides sharp bounds for the relative forward errors. In addition, the experiment indicates that the power method algorithm is reliable to estimate the structured condition number.

Abstract:This paper considers the multidimensional mixed least squares-total least squares (MTLS) problem which arises in the regression model, signal processing and the problem of space coordinate transformation. Firstly, the MTLS problem is proved to be equivalent to a weighted total least squares problem in the limit sense. Then, the perturbation analysis and explicit normwise, mixed and componentwise condition number formulae for the MTLS problem are presented. Tight and computable upper bounds for these condition numbers are also given. The results include the ones for the single-right-hand-side MTLS as special cases. Finally in the numerical experiments, the tightness of condition numbers and upper bounds in evaluating the forward errors is also shown.
