The maritime merchants of Shanghai shipping business during the early Qing period

Abstract:During the early Qing period,Shanghai's position as the center of maritime transportation between the North and South China Seas was both the result of the changed structure of commodity circulation between the north and the south as well as that of the new economic policies of the Qing government.The maritime transportation played an irreplaceable role in the early development of Shanghai.The burgeoning and pick development of Shanghai was based on the large scale commodity circulations propelled by regional merchant groups from all over China.The maritime merchants of Shanghai came mainly from Jiangsu,Zhejiang,Shandong and Fujian provinces,while the most powerful ones were from Shanghai and the nearby Chongming and Nantong areas.Big maritime merchant commonly owned tens of ships.Within the shipping business,complicated relationships existed not only between the maritime merchants and the boatnik,shipmasters,and other crews,but also between the maritime merchants and guest merchants,the soybean agents,the oilcake agents,the oil agents,and the shipping agents.In Shanghai,maritime merchants occupied the central place within the shipping business,and they also played the leading role for the other trades.
