Form the Magnates,Large Landlords to the Rogues:the Daily Life and Regional Order of the"Songnan"During the Qing Dynasty

Abstract:Since the 17th century,the cities,market towns and rural areas of the lower Yan-gtze River had gone through many changes,the core of which dwelt in the Taihu Lake plain,the basic economic zone of Qing dynasty.Wusong River,a key drainage artery of the Taihu Lake, mattering a lot from the ruler's perspectives,had only been generally studied in the framework of the local water control system so far.However,owing to the influences imposed by such factors as channel silting,water conservancy reconstruction and the economic imbalance of surrounding industries,the social life of the tow ns in the Wusong River basin varied greatly,from the up-stream Taihu Lake to the Baoshan County which was located at the estuary.For the local gentries in the Qing Dynasty,the southern region of the Wusong River,mainly clustered by the three or-dinary market towns,Gaoqiao,Jiwangmiao and Zhudi,formed a conceptual district called"Song-nan".With the common economic conditions and the relative hardship of people's livelihood,"Songnan"was never a well -off region endowed with scenic spots and men of talents.The rural settlement of"Songnan"should generally belong to the upland's rural society.Separated by the Wusong River,the regional order and the political situation of the life in"Songnan"failed to co-ordinate with those in the northern part of the watershed.Since a huge gap existed between the two regions,obvious distinctions could also be found in their living states and economic condi-tions.
