Abstract:During the period of 2000 to 2010, the shipbuilding business has experienced tremendous changes within the global market. With Europe’s domination fading away, the increased role of Asian countries has set itself up as the centre of world shipbuilding as well as maritime business in general. This study is to investigate the competitiveness of Asian shipbuilding policy and the industry. The paper presents a comparative study on shipbuilding policy and the competitiveness of the top three shipbuilders, namely South Korea. Japan and China in a quantitative fashion, coupled with the implicit indication each country’s advantages and disadvantages. With the introduction and application of the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) method into the shipbuilding market, a set of critical success factors identified as criteria and sub-criteria to shipbuilding competitiveness is demonstrated to reveal the ranking orders among the three. Supported by ample official data and a survey feedback summary, the obtained results suggest that South Korea is currently leading the world shipbuilding market, followed by China, with an impressive shipbuilding output. Finally, the paper discusses the way forward for the three competitors. The landscape of the shipbuilding industry continues to evolve. Confronted with the evolution, discerning policy makers and entrepreneurs shall be equipped both in resources and personnel to cope with changes and ideally be ahead of the market in order to stimulate and be part of the change.
A Theory-Driven Identification and Ranking of the Critical Success Factors of Sustainable Shipping Management

Abstract:Sustainable shipping management (SSM) is arguably the most challenging issue that shipping companies faced for the coming years. Hence, examining the critical success factors (CSFs) of SSM is vital. Although previous research mainly focused on the motives and implication of SSM, practical research that proposes how SSM can be implemented is still lacking. Therefore, this study fills the gap by identifying and ranking the CSFs of SSM with a theory-driven approach. The CSFs were developed through the theoretical lenses of five organisational theories, namely, stakeholder theory, resource-based view theory, relational-view theory, innovation diffusion theory, and contingency (fit) theory. Based on these theories, this study proposes stakeholders' focus, intra-firm management, inter-firm collaboration, new technology acceptance, and strategic fit as the CSFs of SSM. Further, 20 sub-criteria were identified to operationalise the CSFs. A survey questionnaire was pretested and then administered to 36 shipping companies in Vietnam. Thereafter, the obtained data were analysed using fuzzy analytic hierarchy process. The findings show that the CSFs of SSM, in descending order of their importance, are (1) stakeholders' focus, (2) intra-firm management, (3) new technology acceptance, (4) inter-firm collaboration, and (5) strategic fit. Moreover, results of this study show that among the sub-criteria of SSM, the most important ones are primarily related to monetary resources and tangible infrastructures and equipment. Additionally, SSM implementation in shipping companies can be improved by addressing the needs of stakeholders and aligning SSM activities with shipping companies' strategies.

Abstract:Abstract This paper presents a systematic approach for lean supply chain management in shipbuilding industry based on analysis of the unique characters and processes of shipbuilding. The approach constantly improves productivity and retains low costs. The system that covers seven sub-systems on three different levels is created based on the lean thinking and supply chain management theory. In the lean supply chain management procedure, the operational data of the shipyard and suppliers are timely collected, monitored, and analyzed, and weaknesses in the supply chain are identified through performance measurement to suggest improvements. With this approach the entire shipbuilding supply chain can be continuously optimized and controlled. This approach is concluded and proofed functional with actual operation in a leading shipyard in China, Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Company, guided by Shipbuilding Modeling 2.0 Program of China state shipbuilding corporation.

Abstract:According to current situation of the ship automation and ship building industry in China,the necessity to research and to develop integrated ship control system is analyzed in this paper.The structure of ship control system and the disadvantages of the traditional control system are introduced.Then a design plan of control system based on distributed control units is proposed and analyzed.Finally,based on the Supcon Web Field ECS-100,a simulation system of integrated ship control is implemented.Test results show the feasibility and effectiveness of the design plan.

Abstract:There are a lot of research works as well as books written about SCM strategy, but few books are based on strategic theory of management in a pure sense. As a result, theories themselves are shallow and not in depth. In other words, SCM focuses on a strategic area of supply chain activities while, however, there are few books written on a basis of the theoretical or traditional articles of management strategy in a pure sense. The aims of this article are to review the theoretical strategy formulation concepts out of 50 books published in 2004 through 1990 while we had made logistics literature studies in the middle of 1995 with almost same approach and contributed to academic journals in Japan. This type of SCM literature study is a brand new research and the first attempt of research activity in Japan. As a survey result, it has made clear that most of books paid little attention to structural aspects of SCM strategy formulation as a state of art SCM model linked with management strategy theory. Therefore, we have reviewed the contents of SCM strategy written in fifty books and finally proposed our own SCM strategy structure and formulation based on strategic theories extracted from traditional international management theory as well as strategic theory of classical management.

Abstract:Existing research in the shipbuilding field tends to focus on isolated single aspects of Industry 4.0 (I4.0) without a full picture. To address this gap, this paper seeks to offer a thorough and in-depth examination of the concepts and technologies necessary to integrate I4.0 into the design, construction, maintenance, and other stages throughout the entire life cycle of a ship. This paper will firstly examine the recent developments and identify the gaps in I4.0 application within shipbuilding. By conducting a systematic literature review on 68 publications through an appropriate review methodology, we synthesize the current state of I4.0 research in the shipbuilding industry, propose a framework for the application of I4.0 in shipbuilding to analyze the progression and research agenda of I4.0 in the shipbuilding sector, and discuss its implications. The Shipbuilding 4.0 framework proposed comprises five main components: concepts, value chain, smart factory, smart manufacturing, infrastructure, and technologies. The proposed framework aims to enhance the understanding of both academics and practitioners regarding the specific needs of the shipbuilding industry and the role I4.0 can and should play in its advancement.

Abstract:With the global economy's relentless growth and heightened environmental consciousness, sustainable maritime transport emerges as a pivotal development trajectory for the shipping sector. This study systematically analyzes 478 publications searched in the Web of Science Core Collection, from 2000 to 2023, utilizing bibliometric methods to investigate the application areas in sustainable development within the shipping industry. This study begins with an analysis of annual publication trends, which reveals a substantial expansion in research endeavors within this discipline over recent years. Subsequently, a comprehensive statistical evaluation of scholarly journals and a collaborative network assessment are conducted to pinpoint the foremost productive journals, nations, organizations, and individual researchers. Furthermore, a keyword co-occurrence methodology is applied to delineate the core research themes and emerging focal points within this domain, thereby outlining potential research directions for future research. In addition, drawing on the keyword co-occurrence analysis, the advancements in intelligent shipping technologies and green port construction applications within sustainable maritime transport are discussed. Finally, the review discusses the existing challenges and opportunities of sustainable maritime transport from a theoretical and practical perspective. The research shows that, in terms of intelligent shipping technology, data security and multi-source data are the focus that people need to pay attention to in the future; a trajectory prediction for different climates and different ship types is also an area for future research. In terms of green ports, Cold Ironing (CI) is one of the key points of the green port strategy, and how to drive stakeholders to build sustainable green ports efficiently and economically is the future developmental direction. This review serves to enhance researchers' comprehension of the current landscape and progression trajectory of intelligent shipping technologies, thereby fostering the continued advancement and exploration in this vital domain.

Abstract:Projects characterized by high difficulty in terms of planning and administrative control, require the strategies facilitated by Manufacturing Project Systems (MPS). Among them is an adequate management of the Supply Chain used as a competitive strategy. It could be said that in the case of shipbuilding, the Supply Chain is much more complicated due to the number of intervening parties and many shipyards have opted to include Concurrent Engineering with the implication of considering all the elements that make up the product life cycle. Abstract:As an essential carrier of cross-border trade, the maritime supply chain has always been plagued by long service cycles, complex structures, and heterogeneous information from multiple sources. In this context, as a distributed database system, the emerging blockchain technology has the characteristics of decentralization, tamper-proofness, and traceability, which can be correctly applied in the maritime industry to promote its transformation and upgrading. However, blockchain application in the maritime supply chain remains notably absent, leaving this critical topic almost unexplored. Thus, we first conduct a comprehensive literature review and an industrial investigation to clarify the current status, problems, and challenges of the blockchain-based maritime supply chain system (BMSCS). We construct a new operation management mode of the maritime supply chain and propose an integrated BMSCS suitable for global economic development. Finally, based on comparison of the current research results, reasonable suggestions for the future operation and development of the BMSCS are put forward to enhance the coordination among members, accelerate the application of blockchain in the maritime industry, and gradually realise the intelligent operation of the maritime supply chain.
