Abstract:Summary The novel poly(aryl ether ketone)s containing chloro-side group were synthesized by nucleophilic substitution reactions of 4,4′-biphenol and chlorohydroquinone with either 4,4′-difluorobenzophenone(BP/CH/DF) or 1,4-bis(p-fluorobenzoyl)benzene (BP/CH/BF) and their thermotropic liquid crystalline properties were characterized by a variety of experimental techniques. The thermotropic liquid crystalline behavior was observed in the copolymers containing 50 and 70% biphenol. Melting transition (Tm) and isotropization transition (Ti) both appeared in the DSC thermograms. A banded texture was formed after shearing the sample in the liquid crystalline state. The novel poly(aryl ether ketone)s had relatively higher glass transition temperature (Tg) in the range of 168 ∼ 200 °C and lower melting temperature (Tm) in the range of 290 ∼ 340 °C. The thermal stability (Td) was in the range of 430 ∼ 490 °C.

Abstract:Series of thermotropic liquid crystalline poly (aryl ether ketone) s were synthesized by mucleophilic substitution reactions of 4,4'-biphenol and substituted hydroquinone with different difluoromonomers, The relationship between structure and properties of the novel copolymers was investigated. For the copolymers with liquid crystalline properties, their melting transition temperatures show no great change with increase the content of the crystal-disrupting unit. The reason is that the crystal phase is directly transformed from the ordered liquid crystal phase. Side-groups have important effect on mesophase stability, The temperature range of mesophase stability for the chloro-polymers is smaller than those of other series of copolymers (P-phenyl, t-butyl, methoxy, 3-trifluoromethylbenzene). This behavior indicates that the effect of geometric repulsive factor on the thermodynamic stability of the mesophase is much larger than that of the polarizability attractive factor. Different ordered liquid crystal phases are observed in the polymers with different molecular weights. At low molecular weight, highly ordered smectic liquid crystal phases form. With increasing the molecular weight, the ordered degree of the liquid crystals decreases, and only the nematic liquid crystal phase is observed in the polymer with higher molecular weight.

Abstract:Novel aromatic poly(ether ketones) containing bulky lateral groups were synthesized via nucleophilic substitution reactions of 4,4'-biphenol and (4-chloro-3-trifluoromethyl)phenylhydroquinone (CF-PH) with 1,4-bis(p-fluorobenzoyl)benzene. The copolymers were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), wide-angle X-ray diffraction, and polarized light microscopy observation. Thermotropic liquid-crystalline behavior was observed in the copolymers containing 40, 50, 60, and 70 mol % CF-PH. The crystalline-liquid-crystalline transition [melting temperature (T-m)] and the liquid-crystalline-isotropic phase transition appeared in the DSC thermograms, whereas the biphenol-based homopolymer had only a melting transition. The novel poly(aryl ether ketones) had glass-transition temperatures that ranged from 143 to 151degreesC and lower T-m's that ranged from 279 to 291degreesC, due to the copolymerization. Abstract:A new class of poly(phthalazinone ether ketone ketone)s has been prepared by aromatic nucleophilic displacement polycondensation from an activated dichloride monomer 1 and several phthalazinone containing bisphenol-like monomers 2a–c. The formation of the polymers was confirmed by FT-IR and 1H NMR spectra, and the synthesized polymers 3a–c have good solubility in common organic solvents, high glass transition temperatures (Tgs) in range of 239–255°C and excellent thermal stability. Moreover, tough, flexible and transparent thin films can be readily prepared by both spin coating and solution casting approach. Good solubility in common organic solvents coupled with salient thermal stability demonstrates this class of polymers could be excellent candidate for high performance polymers.

Abstract:Novel poly(aryl ether ketone)s containing a lateral methoxy group were synthesized by nucleophilic substitution reactions of 4,4'-biphenol and methoxyhydroquinone with 1,4-bis(4-fluorobenzoyl)benzene in a sulfolane solvent in the presence of anhydrous potassium carbonate. Their thermotropic liquid crystalline properties were characterized by a variety of experimental techniques, e.g. differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarized light microscopy and temperature-dependent FTIR. Thermotropic liquid crystalline behaviour was observed in the copolymers containing 30-80 mol-% mexthoxyhydroquinone. Both melting (T-m) and isotropization (T-i) transitions appeared in the DSC curves. The polarized light microscopy study of the liquid crystalline copolymers suggested their ordered smectic structures. As expected, the copolymers had lower melting transitions than the biphenol-based homopoly(aryl ether ketone)s because of the copolymerization effect of the crystal-disrupting monomer methoxyhydroquinone.

Abstract:Novel poly(aryl ether ketone)s were synthesized by nucleophilic substitution reactions of difluoromonomer with 4,4'-biphenol and substituted hydroquinone. The results showed that the novel polymers exhibited multiple phase transitions and formed optical birefringence textures above their melting transitions.

Abstract:Based on the modified Higashi's direct polycondensation method, a series of poly(ester imide) s (PEIs) derived from N,N'-hexane-1,6-diylbis(trimellitimide), 4,4'-dihydroxybenzophenone and 6-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid (HNA) were synthesized by a "step-feeding" polycondensation process. The liquid crystalline behavior, structure and thermal properties of these PEIs were characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), polarized-light microscopy (PLM), wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The results showed that all the copolymers possessed a typical nematic thermotropic liquid crystalline character, if the feeding HNA ratio is greater than 33 mol% to the total monomer content. However, this type of liquid crystalline polymers shows only the liquid crystalline phase transitions during heating. In the cooling process, the phase transitions of liquid crystalline phase were not observed. These polymers possessed high glass transition temperature (T-g) and relatively lower melt temperature (T-m), which would find their potential usages as a new category of liquid crystalline polymer materials having a lower, processing temperature but a higher application temperature.

Abstract:A series of novel Shish\|Kebab type liquid crystalline copolyesters with chiral smectic C phase was synthesized by low temperature solution polycondensation with terephthaloyl chloride, 2,5\|bis[4\|((s)\|2\|methylbutoxy)benzoyloxy]hydroqunone,ethylene glycol,diglycol,triethylene glycol,tetraethylene glycol and polyethylene glycol as the monomers.The copolyesters were characterized by GPC,DSC,TG,WAXD,polarizing macroscope(POM)with a heating stage and rotational analysis instrument.It was found that the copolyesters entered into liquid crystal phase when heated to above their melting temperature.The focal\|conic texture was observed.All the chiral compounds and copolyesters showed high optical activity.Temperature\|variable X\|ray diffraction study together with the POM and polarimetric analysis revealed that the copolyesters synthesized exhibited a chiral smectic C phase.Both T \-m and T \-i of all the copolyesters decreased with the increase of the length of polyethylene glycol flexible spacers in copolyesters, while the temperature range of the liquid crystal phase of the copolyesters became wider.

Abstract:The copolyester containing bis(4-hydroxyphenyl) methanone, terephthalic acid, phydroxybenzoic acid and diethylene glycol was synthesized using direct melting condensation polymerization method. The said polyester was characterized by means of differential scanning calorimetry, polarized microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The experimental results show that the copolyester exhibits nematic liquid crystallinity and possesses a broad mesophase temperature range and a good thermal stability.

Abstract:The synthesis of a mesogenic group containing rigid and flexible units: 1-(4'-hydroxybiphenyl-4-yl)-2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)propane (TPP) is presented. TPP was polyetherified under phase-transfer catalysed conditions with alpha,omega-dibromoalkanes containing 4-20 methylenic units. The resulting polyethers, TPP-x (where x=number of methylenic groups in the spacer), were characterized by a combination of techniques consisting of differential scanning calorimetry, thermal optical polarized microscopy and small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering experiments. All TPP-x polyethers displayed multiple crystalline phases whose nature was determined by the spacer length. TPP-x with x of less than 9 exhibited crystalline phases in which the mesogenic and spacer were intermeshed. Polymers with longer spacers displayed crystalline phases in which the mesogen and spacer were separated in separate layers of different electron densities. TPP-x with x=5, 7, 9 and 11 also exhibited a nematic mesophase.

Abstract:A new type of liquid crystalline polyesters with resorcin as one part of the mesogenic unit connected together by polymethylene, or phenylene group, and lateral groups consisting of a rigid azobenzene as another part of the mesogenic unit were synthesized by interfacial polymerization of diacyl chlorides in 1, 2-dichloroethane and 2,4-dihydroxy-4��-nitroazobenzene in aqueous alkaline solution. The polyester structures were confirmed by proton NMR and IR spectra. Their phase transition behavior and texture were studied by polarizing microscopy and DSC.

Abstract:A series of novel optical active shish-kebab type liquid-crystalline copolymers was synthesized via solution polycondensation of terephthaloyl chloride with 2, 5-bis [4-(S)-2-methyl butoxy) benzoyloxy] hydroquinone and hexandiol. The copolymers were characterized by GPC, DSC, TC, WAXD, polarizing microscope and rotational analysis instrument. It was found that all the copolymers change to liquid crystal phase when heated to their T-m. The broken focal-conics texture or sanded texture can be observed. Temperature-variable X-ray diffraction realized that they are chiral smetic C(S-C*) phase, Both melting temperatures (T-m) and isotropization temperatures (T-i) change regularly with varying the hexandiol content in the copolymers. It was found that the rotation was maintained during the synthesis process and all the chiral copolymers were optically highly active.

Abstract:A series of liquid crystalline copolyesters containing both horizontal and lateral rods in main chain were synthesized through solution polymerization of 2,5-bis(4-alkoxy benzoyloxy)hydroquinone. 4,4'-dihydroxy-x,omega-dipheanoxydecane These copolyesters were soluble in common organic solvents, showed thermotropic nematic liquid crystallinity that can be easily obtained at room temperature, thereby making them processable at relatively low temperatures in their high-ordered liquid crystalline states where they are thermally stable. Their thermal transitions can be well adjusted by judiciously controlling the attachment content of lateral rods, and their thermal behaviors were well examined. All synthesized polymers were characterized by gel permeation chromatography (CPC), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarized optical microscopy (POM) and wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD). Abstract:Side-chain liquid crystalline (SCLC) polyethers with different spacers are successfully synthesized via anionic polymerization for the first time. The molecular weights of the polymers can range up to similar to 53 kg/ mol with M-w/M-r, <1.1. The precise chemical structures including end groups have been characterized by employing Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization-Time of Flight (MALDI-TOF) and the polymerization condition free of side reactions is further discussed. The phase behavior and structures of the polyethers have been investigated by combining various techniques including differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and polarized light microscopy (PLM). Two phase transformations are generally observed for each type of SCLC polyethers. Based on 2-dimensional (2D) X-ray patterns of oriented fiber and mechanically sheared samples, the low ordered liquid crystalline phase at high temperature is identified as a SmA phase for both SCLC polyethers. It is found that the polyether with a longer spacer exhibits a complex phase which is a mixture of a HexB phase and a frustrated HexB phase in analogy to smectic antiphase, whereas no such effect occurs for the polymer with a shorter spacer. Only HexB phase is observed for the low temperature phase of this polymer. The difference in phase structures is also revealed in the texture changes of PLM. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:New monomers, 2,5-(4-alkoxybenzoyl-oxy)benzyl acrylates were synthesized. Upon radical polymerizations of these monomers thermotropic liquid crystalline polyacrylates with mesogens laterally attached to polymer backbones via short linkages were obtained. The polymers were found non-crystalline by WAXS measurements. Above glass transition all the polymers had a stable mesophase as revealed by DSC and a polarizing microscope. The glass transition and the isotropization temperatures were about 100°C and about 165°C respectively, both varying with the size of the R substituents in the mesogens. The term “mesogen-jacketed polymer” is proposed to describe this type of polymers of which the main chains are jacketed with laterally substituted mesogens and to distinguish this new class of side chain liquid crystal polymers from the conventional ones.
