Synthesis of Novel Soluble Poly (aryl ether ketone)s Containing Dihydrochalcone Moieties

Abstract:A new intermediate containing dihydrochalcone moiety, i.e., bis(dihydrochalcone) diphenyl ether (BHCDPE), was first synthesized by the Friedel-Crafts alkylation reaction of chalcone and diphenyl ether (DPE). Subsequently, a series of novel poly(aryl ether ketone) (PAEK) polymers were prepared by further Friedel-Crafts polycondensation of BHCDPE and DPE with isophthaloyl dichloride (IPC). It was observed that BHCDPE exhibited strorkg reactivity during Friedel-Crafts polycondensation, i.e., one non-conjugated gamma-carbonyl would not decrease the Friedel-Crafts acylation's reactivity of corresponding benzene rings, such that the dihydrochalcone moiety could be successfully incorporated into the backbone of PAEK to form novel PAEKs with dihydrochalcone moiety. The synthesis route was a continuous procedure and displayed inexpensive and commercially available of the raw materials, mild reactive conditions, as well as high yields due to the absence of complicated process of intermediate treatment. The polymers' structures were characterized by FT-IR, H-1-NMR and XRD analysis. Moreover, obtained polymers maintained good thermal properties, and incorporation of a dihydrochalcone moiety significantly improved polymer solubility in organic solvents, which was advantageous for further functionalization, processing and interactions with other substances. Thus, the designed synthesis route was appropriate to obtain novel soluble PAEKs containing dihydrochalcone moieties, which were expected as new potential candidates for more useful materials in various fields.
