Abstract:A series of fluorinated Schiff base ester liquid crystals, 4-(4-alkyl-trans-cyclohexyl)-benzoic acid 4-[(2, 3, 4-trifluoro-phenylimino)-methyl]-phenyl ester, were synthesized. Their chemical structures were identified by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR); their mesomorphic properties were studied by polarized optical microscopy (POM) and differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). It was found that all the four compounds showed nematic and smectic properties and possessed high clearing point over 300 ℃. And with the increase of the length of alkyl chain, the thermal range of nematic phase and clearing point temperatures decreased, while the smectic-nematic transition temperature and thermal range of smectic phase increased, but their melting point temperatures showed no distinct regularity.

Abstract:The synthesis of some new 4-alkoxyl-4 "-cyano-p-terphenyls is described. The preliminary characterization by means of polarized optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction shows that all these compounds are thermotropically liquid-crystalline and can form both the nematic and smectic mesophases.

Abstract:The liquid crystal properties of 3H-2-oxobenzofuran-6-yl 4-(n-CnH2n+1O)benzoates (1-n, n = 5-12), 4'-(n-CnH2n+1O)biphenyl-4-carboxylates (2-n, n = 6-10), and 4-(n-CnH2n+1)benzoates (3-n, n = 4-6) are described. The n = 5-8 homologues of 1-n exhibit a nematic (N) phase, and the n = 8-12 homologues exhibit a smectic A (SmA) phase, where the layer spacing is ca. 1.3 times of the calculated molecular length. The homologues of 2-n show a complex phase-transition behavior involving a smectic C (SmC), two kinds of SmA, reentrant nematic, and N phases, where the SmC phase is exhibited by the n = 6-8 homologues. The layer spacings of SmA phases formed at high and low temperature regions correspond to 1.3 and 1.0 times of the molecular lengths, respectively. The polar interactions around the terminal lactone moiety are assumed to play important roles for the complex polymesomorphism and diversity of the smectic layer structure.

Abstract:Two series of symmetric ester liquid crystals (nAFBHQ and nADFBHQ) with lateral fluorine atoms have been synthesized. Their chemical structures were measured by FTIR, H-1 NMR, and elemental analysis (EA). Their mesomorphic properties were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarizing optical microscopy (POM). It was found that both series showed nematic phase only. And their melting point and clearing point decreased with the number of carbon atoms in alkoxy group. It can also be found that nAFBHQ have approximately the same temperatures of melting point but much higher temperatures of clearing point than their corresponding compound in nADFBHQ series.

Abstract:4-Substituted n-5,5,6,6,7,7,8,8,9,9,10,10,10-tridecafluorodecan-1- yloxybenzences, n-5,5,6,6,7,7,8,8,9,9,10,10,11,11,12,12-heptadecafluorododecan-1-yloxybenzenes, and 2-methyl-4-substituted n-5,5,6,6,7,7,8,8,9,9,10,10,11,11,12,12,12-heptadecafluorododecan-1-yloxybenzenes benzenes were synthesized and characterized by a combination of techniques consisting of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermal optical polarized microscopy, and small- and wide-angle X-ray diffraction. Thermotropic s(A) and s(C) LC phases are exhibited by compounds with NO2, CN, CO2CH3, CH2OH, CO2H, and COCH3 substituents in the 4-position of the benzene ring. The thermal stability of the LC phase of these compounds increases with the increase of the length of the perfluorinated segment of their alkoxy group. A ratio of the perhydrogenated [(CH2)(m)]/perfluorinated [F(CF2)(n)] segment lengths of m/n < 1 favors the formation of LC phases when n + m = 10 and 12. Additional substitution in the 2-position of the benzene ring with a methyl group decreases the thermal stability of the LC phase. The s(A) phase of these compounds has a bilayered structure in which the perfluorinated segments are interdigitated. These compounds represent the simplest class of rodlike liquid crystals containing a single benzene unit which exhibit classic calamitic phases. The experiments reported in this paper demonstrate a simple and convenient-method for the synthesis of liquid crystals containing a single benzene unit via the fluorophobic effect.
The Effect of Lateral Fluorination on the Properties of Phenyl-Tolane Liquid Crystals

Abstract:Multifluorinated phenyl-tolane liquid crystals were synthesised by two steps cross-coupling reactions, and their structures were confirmed by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), mass spectra (MS) and infrared spectrometry (IR). All of these compounds show only nematic phase, and their melting points decrease dramatically with the introduction of lateral fluorine atom. The physical properties of the compounds were also evaluated. The extrapolated birefringence of the compounds are at the range of 0.32–0.37 at 589 nm, and the dielectric anisotropies exist between 3.1 and 20.6, and the rotational viscosities are as low as 63.7–130.7 mPa·s. With the increase of lateral fluorine substituents in the benzene ring, the Δε value increases tremendously while the clearing points, birefringence and rotational viscosity decrease. These compounds show good solubilities and are favourable to form eutectic mixtures. The effect of lateral fluorine atoms at different region of the core on the dielectric anisotropy and mesophase is also discussed.

Abstract:Twelve compounds based on lateral fluorinated bistolane moieties with cyano or trifluoromethyl terminal groups were synthesised with Hagihara-Sonogashira cross-coupling reaction. The molecular structures of the compounds were confirmed by Fourier transform infrared, H-1-nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectrometry. The transition temperatures, optical textures and optical anisotropies were determined by differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing optical microscopy and ultraviolet microscopy. The effects of the terminal substituents and lateral fluorosubstituent group on their physical properties were investigated and discussed. The compounds with lateral double fluorosubstituent and cyano terminal group exhibited nematogenic texture, while other compounds showed smectic phase. All the compounds exhibited wide liquid crystal temperature ranges and high clearing points. Interestingly, the compounds have the high birefringence in the range of between 0.480 and 0.633.

Abstract:Two series of fluorinated Schiff's base esters have been synthesized and characterized. Their chemical structures were identified by FTIR, 1H NMR, and elemental analysis (EA). Their mesomorphic properties were studied by polarizing optical, microscopy (POM) and differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). It was found that most of the compounds with alkyl end group exhibited enantiotropic smectic A and nematic phase; while that with alkoxyl behaved differently, some exhibited enantiotropic smectic A and nematic phase; others exhibited monotropic smectic A and enantiotropic nematic phase or unique enantiotropic nematic phase. And for both series, their melting point and clearing point temperature decreased and thermal ranges of mesophase increased with the length of their end groups (n). Furthermore, it was also found that the increase of n was propitious to the stability of smectic phase but went against for that of nematic.

Abstract:The mesomorphic stability and optical activity of new group-based benzotrifluoride liquid crystals, (E)-4-(((4-(trifluoromethyl) phenyl) imino) methyl) phenyl 4-(alkyloxy)benzoate, or In, were investigated. The end of the molecules connected to the benzotrifluoride moiety and the end of the phenylazo benzoate moiety have terminal alkoxy groups which can range in chain length from 6 to 12 carbons. The synthesized compounds' molecular structures were verified using FT-IR, 1H NMR, mass spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. Mesomorphic characteristics were verified using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and a polarized optical microscope (POM). All of the homologous series that have been developed display great thermal stability across a broad temperature range. Density functional theory (DFT) determined the examined compounds' geometrical and thermal properties. The findings showed that every compound is entirely planar. Additionally, by using the DFT approach, it was possible to link the experimentally found values of the investigated compounds' investigated compounds' mesophase thermal stability, mesophase temperature ranges, and mesophase type to the predicted quantum chemical parameters.

Abstract:A new series of laterally substituted terphenyl compounds, 4,4"-dialkoxy-2'-methyl-p-terphenyls (n = 1-12), were synthesized. Their liquid crystallinities were characterized by means of polarizing optical microscopy (POM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The influence of the length of the terminal alkoxy groups on the liquid crystalline behavior was investigated. It was found that the compounds with shorter end chains (n less than or equal to 8) tended to form nematic mesophases. However, a smectic A mesophase is exhibited for those with longer end chains (9 less than or equal to n less than or equal to 12).

Abstract:Two series of hydrogen-bonded liquid crystal complexes have been obtained from binary mixtures of 4, 4′-bipyridine and 2-fluoro-6-X-4-alkoxybenzoic acids (where X = H or F) with a molar ratio of 2:1. The fluorinated proton donors were synthesized firstly and then their chemical structures measured by EA, FTIR, 1H NMR and 13C NMR. The existences of hydrogen bonds between the proton donors and acceptors were identified by FTIR. The liquid crystalline properties of these complexes were investigated by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), polarizing optical microscopy (POM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results indicated that these complexes with different alkoxy chains and numbers of lateral fluorine atoms exhibited different phase properties. Especially, when the alkoxy chains were short enough, the mesophase of the complexes disappeared.

Abstract:A number of 1,4-bis(phenylethynyl)benzene derivatives (BPEBs) and their analogues with different numbers of side-substitute fluorine atoms on benzene rings, and alkyl chains, ethoxyl groups, fluorine atoms and trifluoromethyl groups as the end groups have been synthesized. The effects of the different substituents on their properties such as thermal behavior of melting point and clearing point, the temperature of nematic phase, optical anisotropy and dielectric anisotropy have been well investigated, and it has been found that some BPEBs have a wide range of the nematic phase temperature with high optical anisotropy (n) and acceptable dielectric anisotropy (), which have been applied as the crucial compositions to constitute a liquid crystal mixture having the properties of = 29.0 and n = 0.283 at 25 degrees C. With the addition of the chiral dopant to the obtained liquid crystal mixture, blue phase liquid crystal with a blue phase temperature range of 8 degrees C has been achieved.

Abstract:A series of new thermal bilateral liquid crystal compounds with the phenylenebis-1,3,4-oxadiazole structure was synthesised. The molecular structures of the oxadiazole compounds were confirmed by FT-IR and H-1 NMR spectroscopy, elemental analysis and mass spectrometry. Thermogravimetric analysis indicates that the compounds in an atmosphere of nitrogen have good thermal stability. Measurements using differential scanning calorimetry, polarising optical microscopy and temperature-dependent wide-angle X-ray diffraction indicated that the liquid crystalline properties are related to the length of the end groups. When the end group was tert-butyl or alkoxy with four and six carbons, the compounds exhibit no liquid crystal phase. However, compounds with end groups containing more than eight carbons show significant bidirectional thermally-induced liquid crystal properties and the structure of the liquid crystal phase is the lamellar smectic A phase. All the compounds exhibit blue fluorescence.

Abstract:A series of 2-(4-alkoxyphenyl)-5-p-tolyl-1,3,4-thiadiazole derivatives 2a-2h were synthesised efficiently under microwave irradiation and solvent-free conditions. The thermal properties were determined using polarised optical microscopy (POM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). All these compounds exhibited enantiotropic liquid crystal properties with wide mesomorphic temperature ranges and good thermal stability. Compounds 2a-2f with short alkoxy chain (n = 1-6) all exhibited an enantiotropic nematic mesophase, while both nematic and smectic C mesophases were observed in compounds 2g (n = 7) and 2h (n = 8) with longer alkoxy spacer. The effect of the length of the alkoxy chain on liquid crystal properties is discussed in this paper.

Abstract:Dielectric and electro-optic properties have been studied in order to understand the effect of the fluoro-substitution on hydrogen bonded liquid crystal proprieties. The fluoro-substitution alters the characteristics of pure LC structure and changes its physical parameters. In the present paper, variation in physical parameters like dielectric permittivity, response time, elastic constant, rotational viscosity etc. has been explained based on many factors. In addition, the fluorine substitution has lead to the appearance of the polar nematic phase.

Abstract:Novel rod-shaped sulfonic acid compounds,4-alkoxy-4′-butyloxy-sulfonate-biphenyl(3a and 3b),based on a mesogen were synthesized from biphenyl by ring-opening reaction of butane sultone.The structures were characterized by the 1H NMR and IR.The results from polarized optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimete showed that 3 exhibited thermotropic Smectic A phase beyond 180 ℃.
