Abstract:In this paper, we first study the strong Birkhoff Ergodic Theorem forsubharmonic functions with the Brjuno-Rüssmann shift on the Torus. Then, weapply it to prove the large deviation theorems for the finite scale Dirichletdeterminants of quasi-periodic analytic Jacobi operators with this frequency.It shows that the Brjuno-Rüssmann function, which reflects the irrationalityof the frequency, plays the key role in these theorems via the smallestdeviation. At last, as an application, we obtain a distribution of theeigenvalues of the Jacobi operators with Dirichlet boundary conditions, whichalso depends on the smallest deviation, essentially on the irrationality of thefrequency.

Abstract:Let be a metric measure-preserving dynamical system such that three-fold correlations decay exponentially for Lipschitz continuous observables. Given a sequence that converges to slowly enough, we obtain a strong dynamical Borel–Cantelli result for recurrence, that is, for -almost every , where . In particular, we show that this result holds for Axiom A diffeomorphisms and equilibrium states under certain assumptions.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a quasi-projective variety and $f\colon X\to X$ a finite surjective endomorphism. We consider Zariski Dense Orbit Conjecture (ZDO), and Adelic Zariski Dense Orbit Conjecture (AZO). We consider also Kawaguchi-Silverman Conjecture (KSC) asserting that the (first) dynamical degree $d_1(f)$ of $f$ equals the arithmetic degree $\alpha_f(P)$ at a point $P$ having Zariski dense $f$-forward orbit. Assuming $X$ is a smooth affine surface, such that the log Kodaira dimension $\bar{\kappa}(X)$ is non-negative (resp. the étale fundamental group $\pi_1^{\text{ét}}(X)$ is infinite), we confirm AZO, (hence) ZDO, and KSC (when $\operatorname{deg}(f)\geq 2$) (resp. AZO and hence ZDO). We also prove ZDO (resp. AZO and hence ZDO) for every surjective endomorphism on any projective variety with ''larger'' first dynamical degree (resp. every dominant endomorphism of any semiabelian variety).

Abstract:Let $X$ be a klt projective variety with numerically trivial canonical divisor. A surjective endomorphism $f:X\to X$ is amplified (resp.~quasi-amplified) if $f^*D-D$ is ample (resp.~big) for some Cartier divisor $D$. We show that after iteration and equivariant birational contractions, an quasi-amplified endomorphism will descend to an amplified endomorphism. As an application, when $X$ is Hyperkähler, $f$ is quasi-amplified if and only if it is of positive entropy. In both cases, $f$ has Zariski dense periodic points. When $X$ is an abelian variety, we give and compare several cohomological and geometric criteria of amplified endomorphisms and endomorphisms with countable and Zariski dense periodic points (after an uncountable field extension).

Abstract:In this short note, we prove positivity of the Lyapunov exponent for 1D continuum Anderson models by leveraging some classical tools from inverse spectral theory. The argument is much simpler than the existing proof due to Damanik--Sims--Stolz, and it covers a wider variety of random models. Along the way we note that a Large Deviation Theorem holds uniformly on compacts.

Abstract:The work of Gantert, Kim, and Ramanan [Large deviations for random projections of $\ell^p$ balls, Ann. Probab. 45 (6B), 2017] has initiated and inspired a new direction of research in the asymptotic theory of geometric functional analysis. The moderate deviations perspective, describing the asymptotic behavior between the scale of a central limit theorem and a large deviations principle, was later added by Kabluchko, Prochno, and Thäle in [High-dimensional limit theorems for random vectors in $\ell_p^n$ balls. II, Commun. Contemp. Math. 23(3), 2021]. These two approaches nicely complement the classical study of central limit phenomena or non-asymptotic concentration bounds for high-dimensional random geometric quantities. Beyond studying large and moderate deviations principles for random geometric quantities that appear in geometric functional analysis, other ideas emerged from the theory of large deviations and the closely related field of statistical mechanics, and have provided new insight and become the origin for new developments. Within less than a decade, a variety of results have appeared and formed this direction of research. Recently, a connection to the famous Kannan-Lovász-Simonovits conjecture and the study of moderate and large deviations for isotropic log-concave random vectors was discovered. In this manuscript, we introduce the basic principles, survey the work that has been done, and aim to manifest this direction of research, at the same time making it more accessible to a wider community of researchers.

Ample canonical heights for endomorphisms on projective varieties

Abstract:We define an “ample canonical height” for an endomorphism on a projective variety, which is essentially a generalization of the canonical heights for polarized endomorphisms introduced by Call–Silverman. We formulate a dynamical analogue of the Northcott finiteness theorem for ample canonical heights as a conjecture, and prove it for endomorphisms on varieties of small Picard numbers, abelian varieties, and surfaces. As applications, for the endomorphisms which satisfy the conjecture, we show the non-density of the set of preperiodic points over a fixed number field, and obtain a dynamical Mordell–Lang type result on the intersection of two Zariski dense orbits of two endomorphisms on a common variety.

Abstract:We expand the class of deviation sequences for which the problem on the existence of an element of a Banach space with these deviations from a system of nested subspaces is solved positively regardless of the space and the system of subspaces. This result is used to narrow the gap between the weak asymptotics constants in S. V. Konyagin's theorem on the existence of an element whose deviations are asymptotically close to given ones.

Abstract:Coarse expanding conformal systems were introduced by P. Haïssinsky and K. M. Pilgrim to study the essential dynamical properties of certain rational maps on the Riemann sphere in complex dynamics from the point of view of Sullivan's dictionary. In this paper, we prove that for a metric coarse expanding conformal system $f\colon(\mathfrak{X}_1,X)\rightarrow (\mathfrak{X}_0,X)$ with repellor $X$, the map $f|_X\colon X\rightarrow X$ is asymptotically $h$-expansive. Moreover, we show that $f|_X$ is not $h$-expansive if there exists at least one branch point in the repellor. As a consequence of asymptotic $h$-expansiveness, for $f|_X$ and each real-valued continuous potential on $X$, there exists at least one equilibrium state. For such maps, if some additional assumptions are satisfied, we can furthermore establish a level-$2$ large deviation principle for iterated preimages, followed by an equidistribution result.

Abstract:We present two examples of a large deviations principle where the rate function is not strictly convex. This is motivated by a model used in mathematical finance (the Heston model), and adds a new item to the zoology of non strictly convex large deviations. For one of these examples, we show that the rate function of the Cramer-type of large deviations coincides with that of the Freidlin-Wentzell when contraction principles are applied.

Abstract:Let $\sigma$ denote an endomorphism of a smooth algebraic group $G$ over the algebraic closure of a finite field, and assume all iterates of $\sigma$ have finitely many fixed points. Steinberg gave a formula for the number of fixed points of $\sigma$ (and hence of all of its iterates $\sigma^n$) in the semisimple case, leading to a representation of its Artin-Mazur zeta function as a rational function. We generalise this to an arbitrary (smooth) algebraic group $G$, where the number of fixed points $\sigma_n$ of $\sigma^n$ can depend on $p$-adic properties of $n$. We axiomatise the structure of the sequence $(\sigma_n)$ via the concept of a `finite-adelically distorted' (FAD-)sequence. Such sequences also occur in topological dynamics, and our subsequent results about zeta functions and asymptotic counting of orbits apply equally well in that situation; for example, to $S$-integer dynamical systems, additive cellular automata and other compact abelian groups. We prove dichotomies for the associated Artin-Mazur zeta function, and study the analogue of the Prime Number Theorem for the function counting periodic orbits of length $\leq N$. For an algebraic group $G$ we express the error term via the $\ell$-adic cohomological zeta function of $G$.

Large Deviations Principle for Bures-Wasserstein Barycenters

Abstract:We prove the large deviations principle for empirical Bures-Wasserstein barycenters of independent, identically-distributed samples of covariance matrices and covariance operators. As an application, we explore some consequences of our results for the phenomenon of dimension-free concentration of measure for Bures-Wasserstein barycenters. Our theory reveals a novel notion of exponential tilting in the Bures-Wasserstein space, which, in analogy with Crámer's theorem in the Euclidean case, solves the relative entropy projection problem under a constraint on the barycenter. Notably, this method of proof is easy to adapt to other geometric settings of interest; with the same method, we obtain large deviations principles for empirical barycenters in Riemannian manifolds and the univariate Wasserstein space, and we obtain large deviations upper bounds for empirical barycenters in the general multivariate Wasserstein space. In fact, our results are the first known large deviations principles for Fréchet means in any non-linear metric space.

Abstract:It has often been observed that the Multifractal Formalism and the Large Deviation Principles are intimately related. In fact, Multifractal Formalism was heuristically derived using the Large Deviations ideas. In numerous examples in which the multifractal results have been rigorously established, the corresponding Large Deviation results are valid as well. Moreover, the proofs of multifractal and large deviations are remarkably similar. The natural question then is whether under which conditions multifractal formalism can be deduced from the corresponding large deviations results. More specifically, given a sequence of random variables $\{ {X_n} \}_{n\in\N}$, satisfying a Large Deviation Principle, what can be said about the multifractal nature of the level sets $K_\alpha=\{\omega: \lim_{n} \frac{X_n(\omega)}{n}=\alpha\}$. Under some technical assumptions, we establish the upper and lower bounds for multifractal spectra in terms of the large deviation rate functions, and show that many known results of multifractal formalism are covered by our setup.
