Abstract:It is now a consensus that academic norms are of great significance to the development and prosperity of Chinese scholarship, including the discipline of world history. However, in the building up of academic norms, it is important to give considerations to both the systematical nature of academic norms itself and the uniqueness of specific disciplines, and to adjust the experiences absorbed from the learned communities in Europe and America to the academic traditions and scholastic reality in China. As to the study of world history, while the progress of the whole scholarship in China is indispensable to its growth, scholars in the field may play distinctive roles in building up academic norms as well. The field of world history is distinguished by the needs of cross-cultural understanding and the enormous use of materials in sundry foreign languages, therefore there are special requirements in respect to the selection of subjects, the use of materials, the citing of sources, the way of making notes, and the prevention of plagiarism. If only those characteristics of the study of world history are seriously taken into account, the building up of academic norms will be a dynamic factor in promoting the scholarly maturity of the field.
